We have visited this restaurant many times over the past 20 years and have always had impeccable service and exceptional food in a beautiful setting. It was always a special treat for us and highly regarded by friends and family. I am aware of the recent change of ownership. Things have certainly changed here and not for the better. No table cloths, paper napkins, slate mats, mediocre to poor service, orders taken on iPad. Food was ok but not what it once was. Lots of chips in buckets. I won’t go into the minutia of the meal but overall disappointed. Very sad.

We were placed upstairs apparently we should have been told this when we booked but we're not. This was a problem as we had two people with us who have mobility issues. Offered water for the table, but was charged for it. Good had obviously been cooked prior to service and the meat was dry and tough. The Yorkshire puddings so tough as to be inedible and the gravy for meat was the same, between us we had lamb, beef and turkey, when we asked for more it was in a large jug and told it was for all. I like crispy toast potatoes, but I feared for my teeth trying to eat one. I gave up after that. Such a shame as previously it was a beautiful restaurant. On this visit the new ownership, in my opinion, is nowhere near good as previous owners.

Gorgeous meal, good options to chose from on the menu, it is a small intimate room but that didn’t matter to us, we mentioned it was our anniversary upon booking and nothing was done for this, sometimes the little touches make the experience. Would return as the food was delicious

The atmosphere is relaxing and intimate. A very inviting dining area and a charming bar area if you wanted to have a drink before being seated. The service was extremely polite, professional and welcoming. The gentleman was very knowledgeable and represented the establishment impeccably. Once we had ordered the food arrived beautifully presented and generous portions. The house pate was delicious as well as the soup! The venison was out of this world! Cooked to perfection and again a generous portion. The sticky toffee pudding was very nice too! Will definitely be returning as we live close by. Would 100% recommend! Check out their website also as they also have private rooms available for parties etc which we will be definitely looking at! Thank you Beatson House for an amazing evening ❤️

Had the pleasure of dining here tonight to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary (actually back in July - but due to circumstances beyond everyone’s control it happened tonight). From the moment we arrived James was the perfect host - we were made to feel more than welcome, we were made to feel at home. The atmosphere was so relaxed and James and Ava (hope I have spelt that right) were so friendly, so welcoming and so professional. Had a relaxing drink in the bar area before going to our table which is always nice. James fully explained the various options available and was very attentive without being overbearing. Our food was stunning, simply stunning. Scallops and Pate to start Cod wrapped in pancetta with butterbean, chorizo and red onion cassoulet and Fillet Steak with twice cooked chips - cooked to perfection for mains Dark chocolate Delice for Dessert. Service was stunning - professional without bowing and scraping (which I personally hate) and just plain friendly. We were not rushed at all, just made very welcome. No hesitation in recommending this restaurant and we WILL DEFINITELY return. Thank you for a superb evening.

Everyone tried hard but the two girls were not well trained and couldn’t make a decision or explain the menu. Everything run by one guy who was pleasant but what the point of having other staff standing round if their not be utilised. Ordered fillet steak but it was 180/200g so very small for both its size and cost. Nothing bad about the place and it has the monopoly in the area but couldn’t honestly recommend.. sorry

I would rate this better than average but not quite “very good”. Service was excellent and the lady who served us was very welcoming. The food was ok. I had lamb. It wasn’t cooked enough and it did t have much taste. I should have sent it back so my fault, but with a room full (10) I didn’t want to cause a fuss. Starter was nice (mackerel) and dessert of sticky toffee pudding also good. We ordered a bottle of wine cheaper than the house wine which was included in the set price, yet we were charged £5 extra which I thought was a bit steep. All in all it was a nice experience and we would go back. The deal of £80 for 3 courses and house wine was good.

Another fantastic Sunday lunch at Beatson House. We visit regularly, both in the evening and for Sunday lunch, because finding somewhere that provides high quality food and great service consistently is rare. Add beautiful surroundings plus a friendly welcome and it’s easy to understand why we visit so often. Today’s choices were scallops with cauliflower purée, cauliflower pakora and curry oil plus ham hock terrine with quail’s egg, minted pea purée and crispy pancetta to start followed by roast turkey and lamb plus all the trimmings. Dessert for me was warm cherry bakewell tart with cherry ice cream and cherry compote while my husband had the cheese selection. Everything was beautifully presented as always but even more important tasted superb. Thanks to all the team at Beatson House for making it such a lovely place to eat, with special thanks to James and Lee who between them make sure both front and back of house run smoothly. We’ve both eaten out extensively in this country and overseas and rarely find anything to come close so we feel lucky to have this place on our doorstep. We’ll be back in a couple of weeks!

Very disappointing Sunday Lunch at Beatson House 7/1/24. We have had memorable meals here in the past, but this time it was memorable for the wrong reasons. To make matters worse we had recommended it to the friends we were with to celebrate a birthday so it involved an extended journey when with hindsight better options would have been available more locally providing a better experience and value. The service was inattentive (though there was only one other table with two people in the downstairs restaurant), my wife and I arrived shortly after the other friends and shown straight to the table, after 15 minutes I had to ask a passing member of staff if we could order drinks. After we had finished the first course the dishes remained on our table for quite a long time before someone collected them. Similarly with the main course. The food was mediocre at best. The beef sirloin was no longer available and I accept that’s a risk of attending the second lunch sitting. Two of us opted for the ‘Rack & Black’ special which was described as ‘rack/loin of lamb with black pudding’. It was nothing like any rack or loin of lamb I’ve had previously and looked very unappetising on the plate. It consisted predominantly of a thick fat rind with a small section of not very tender meat, accompanied by a lot of black pudding. Most of the vegetables were ok with the exception of the roast potatoes which were soggy pale imitations of roasters. What I think should never happen in a restaurant of this purported calibre is the meal being served with the gravy already on the plate. One lunch had to be sent back because there was just too much of it. How can the chef know how much gravy each individual prefers? Even the website shows an image of lunch being served with a gravy boat. I expect this of restaurants and pubs charging much less than the £30 Beatson House charge for their 2 course lunch. At the time we didn’t complain because we didn’t want to make a scene as it was a friend’s birthday. However the lunch was poor. It is such a shame because we had come to view Beatson House as a place to go for a fine dining special occasion, but that is no longer the case. That is unless we were unfortunate to catch them on a really bad day. From Sunday’s experience it would seem that they are living on a past reputation.

We visited for Sunday lunch around Christmas as a family. We came on the recommendation of many 5* reviews. Firstly the restaurant was very busy, as was the car park which was double parked. We parked in a nearby street. We were seated in the bar area. The restaurant is nicely decorated and it had a busy vibe. Staff were attentive but we all commented that it was a “false nice”. It felt forced & unnatural, calling our teen son ‘sir’! The waitress had been noticeably trained as she repeated the phase of “excuse me for interrupting” numerous times. (I prefer this to experiences elsewhere to be fair). Food - the reason for the average score is simply the food was very average I am sorry to say. Nothing special that we had expected from the many 5* reviews previously noted. To provide depth of detail, I had a prawn starter. It was literally about 15 small prawns in seafood sauce, 2 lettuce leaves, half a slice of cucumber, half a small plum tomato and half a slice of buttered brown bread presented on a side plate. My son & daughter each had a fondue with baby dipping vegetables. It was very basic & presented as something you’d give a toddler (a few chopped veg & melted cheese). They both laughed when it came! My main was roast beef. It was unremarkable and in no way special. The vegetables were a small bowl to share as a table, the sprouts were cold (had it been left by the window?) The roast potatoes were clearly ‘pre-cooked’ and were rock hard, as were the Yorkshire puddings. The beef was alright but quite tough & chewy. For £30 for the two courses it was disappointing. I did expect something more special and remarkable. My son is vegetarian and the choice was extremely limited. We were that disappointed in the starters & mains that we did not have a pudding. Staff seemed to congregate in the small passageway between the bar & main restaurant area which was a little off putting. I would recommend you request a table away from the bar area as it seemed an ‘overspill’ area with customers going just outside and smoking by the doors you sit by. We enjoy meals out and don’t mind paying that bit more but over £150 for a two course meal for four was not good value for the food and experience we had. We won’t be returning anytime soon. I’m unsure if the lacklustre food was due to the pre Christmas rush and we went on a bad day ?? I suspect customers who have had a less than positive experience are put off reviewing by the zealous responses provided to previous reviewers. We didn’t complain as it was ‘ok’, plus we didn’t want it to totally spoil the start of the holidays for us. It was just nothing like we expected it to be. Disappointing experience.

We haven’t been to Beatson House for many years and so we noticed lots of changes, including the decor and table spacing, much improved since our last visit. We had heard excellent reports about this restaurant and looking at the numerous 5 star reports I guess we must have come on the wrong day.In fact when we commented that the meals were not particularly hot we were advised that the usual chef was not working ( Sunday 19th November). We had pork loin which my wife found to be quite fatty and with sinew. The Yorkshire puddings were difficult to cut and the knives were not particularly sharp. It begs the question of how long the puddings had been cooked before being served. We were offered complementary sweets to compensate for the problem with the main courses. We have had much better quality Sunday lunches for half the price we paid. The staff and service were friendly and efficient which partly made up for the quality of the food.

Follow The Pecking Order 23 on Facebook for all our reviews. Overall experience 9.4/10 Food 9/10 Service 9.9/10 Cleanliness 10/10 Atmosphere/Setting 9/10 Value 9/10 This House is through the roof!! A nice location. Ample parking at the back. Overall this was a very satisfying experience. The service started brilliantly. We were greeted at the bar by the Head Waiter who instructed his staff to seat us at our prebooked table. Our drinks orders were taken and then the Head Waiter came over to inform of the Specials on the menu and the soup of the day. A short wait for our drinks followed by our usual mix of starters. We had the scallops which were on the specials menu. These were cooked perfectly, sat on a cauliflower puree, a thoroughly enjoyable dish.. The Duck Orange Pate had a good flavour and was seved with a chutney, which slightly overpowered the pate and bread. The wild mushroom arancini, the only real disappointment of the meal, was a little bland, we couldn't really taste the mushrooms and garlic if there was any present though great texture. The marinara sauce they sat on was a good strong clean and fresh flavour. We had the beef sirloin Sunday Roast main course served with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes , mash and vegetables. The beef was cooked to perfection and the gravy was exceptionally delicious. Mash was smooth and creamy and well cooked vegetables. The horseradish served with it had good kick, and seemed to be homemade with real grated horseradish. We had to try the seasonal bonfire parkin cake. Although nice and a bit different from the usual menu desserts it was in need of some more sauce or ice cream. The sticky toffee pudding was light and full of flavour. The blackberry parfait was a little bland lacking the punch of blackberry I was hoping for, but pleasant enough. Although the food was very good overall, it was the service which was outstanding at this place. We were offered drinks at exactly the right moment, we were checked on to see if everything was OK, the staff were all courteous and respectful, taking care to apologise for any interruptions they needed to make to offer drinks etc. The chap running the team was meticulous in his work and orchestrated everything impeccably. This would have been our first 10/10 for service but one of the waitresses brought our last drink holding the glass by the top with her fingers all around the rim. We will definitely be returning to try the midweek menu . The Pecking Orders final verdict. Being just a few minutes off the M1 motorway it's definitely worth a detour if you're passing.

We went for our first visit after a recommendation and we wasn’t disappointed . The service , the choices , perfect summer special cocktails and the quality Sunday lunch all made the visit a delight . The staff was attentive but not intrusive .. The food , we both had the beef , was cooked to perfection, fresh potatoes and veg all served in warm tureens to help yourself were for us a perfect pairing . I had a glass of the house Malbec - this surpassed what I excepted, temperature , quality liquid made me require a second glass , and the second glass didn’t disappoint either . We chose the 2 course option so a desert was now offered , but to our delight we was offered a pause , no rushing , just relaxing . I chose the cheese board , served with for me a treat , quince jelly ! , the second desert was sticky toffee pudding , gone very quickly … Coffee , good quality coffee too rounded off a perfect treat .. The experience was a total bill of £87 which was great value to us .,, We have chosen to rebook for an evening meal as we set of on our holiday in September .. We both can’t thing of a better start to our chosen adventure .. Well done team Beatson House

Overpriced restaurant pretending to be something it’s not. The menu is very limited and extremely old fashioned and the chef is clearly inflexible, even to the point of cooking duck breast medium rather than pink!! They must have a poor butcher as I was told it would be tough if it was cooked any longer!! I had the sea bass which was a tiny fillet with a few new potatoes and mussels and came away hungry. New Year’s Eve meal which we only secured because of a cancellation. We have had lots of meals at Beatson House over the years and have always had lovely meals but after last night I felt that I should leave a review highlighting how amazing the staff and food is at this establishment. With the country battling Covid this restaurant still managed to deliver the high quality that we have come to expect from them. It was a seven course menu, with every course impressing us, but above and beyond that was how friendly, welcoming and warming the staff were. On entering the restaurant we were met by Johnny who made us feel like we were the most important guests in the world and the service continued through out the evening. Grace, our waitress was super caring and attentive, serving amazing food with a smile and a friendly conversation. Each course was so tasty and superbly cooked and presented, which at £75 a head I thought was incredible value on New Years being. Leaving the restaurant we spoke with the manger Nikki, who was such a lovely friendly person that made us want to come back to Beatson House time and time again. We also met the chef of 20 years Lee, who again was a truly smashing guy. We heard some people complaining about the temperature of their beef, which we also had and I thought how ignorant and critical they were. It was exquisite fillet that should be served at room temperature and was delicious. This inspired me to write this review and showcase how wonderful this place is and we will certainly be visiting it soon. Alex

The evening started off poorly I booked a few weeks in advance and specifically asked for a table near a radiator but was told everywhere is warm but we were initially put in the conservatory which is very cold but we were moved into the house which is three coats warmer. My wife ordered salmon and I ordered fillet steak my wife said her salmon was okay but nothing special it comes with vegetables which were okay but her roast potatoes were very poor they were very hard (Bessie's are better). My fillet was okay 5/10 but the main thing was the supposedly twice cooked chips were not even half cooked they were pale, green, or black on the outside. At least they had the decency not to charge us for the meal and were most apologetic.

Another fabulous meal. Attentive, efficient service. Although we were in the back room, near the bar, which is perhaps not so cosy as other rooms we felt very comfortable as there was plenty of space between tables.

For our twentieth anniversary we wanted a special meal and Beatson House certainly rose to the occasion. A genuine warm welcome was followed by a lovely dry Prosecco. The menu was full of great choices; we went for crab arrancini with a home made chilli dipping sauce and an inventive goats cheese fondue. For mains we both had fillet steak which came with great fat chips, proper onion rings and just-right veg. The pepper and blue cheese sauces were excellent. Finally a coconut cheesecake and a sublime sticky toffee pudding filled the remaining gaps. Everything was washed down with a good value Tempranillo from an intelligent and well rounded wine list. Service was friendly, well timed and unobtrusive and the bill wasn’t eye- watering for the quality on offer. Beatson House is a restaurant we will certainly return to.

What a hidden little gem. Outstanding service and food. We went for a Sunday dinner along with a starter and desert. The roast potatoes have a unique crispy skin and stuffing was very tasty. The tomato and red pepper soup was one of the best I've had. The puddings were spectacular, my wife had the posset (first time ever) and thoroughly enjoyed it. I had the coconut cheesecake and it was freshly made and delicious. Truly is a little gem. I will be returning very soon! Only criticism, could do with a few more beers on draft.

I was staying local at the Wortley Cottage Guest House a few miles away, and the owners Tony and Sue, mentioned how good the Travellers Inn was and they were not wrong. I called on the speck and I was lucky to get a table, as loads were reserved and I can see why. They have a good selection of cast beers (a shame I was driving and couldn't have a pint). The menu is good, with the typical pub food, but also plenty of different food as well. I just went for a small gammon, as I heard that the portions were large, and I am glad I did. The gammon was a good large piece of steak and not the circular stuff that some pubs dish out. The chips were hand cut, proper chips not the frozen one, that everyone sells. The staff were helpful and plesent. Would I return and recommend. Definetly. If you like my honest review, please follow me as I review on a regular basis.

In the Tap now. It's like after school club. The noise is horrendous 😫, cannot hear the conversation with friends above the racket from the 4 girls in here. Been in before no issue at all, but based on this afternoon won't be coming back
