Real ales, quality lager and an open fire, what more could you want. Visited after a long walk and it was perfect.

Bopped in here for a drink after eating dinner in central Ripon. It is a good spot; the bar staff are friendly and there is plenty of seating.

Visited on 3/10 about 4.30pm, popped to Evensong at Cathedral, and then returned about 6.30pm. Great atmosphere. Great beer.

Just had drinks, decent choice of gins and real ales. Staff friendly and goid atmosphere. Clean, tidy and good seating arrangement indoors and outdoors

No food but can order a takeaway to have in the lovely beer garden. We had a morris dancer play bango which was entertaining.

Spent Saturday afternnon/early evening here with family, great range of ales and fantastic service from the staff.

Featured in the Good Pub Guide and Good Beer Guide. Grade II listed building set in a terrace, its narrow frontage leads you into a warm and welcoming pub. Lovely and large rear garden. A doggy friendly wet pub serving 7 well kept changing real ales. We shall return. 🇬🇧🇳🇿

Proper pub! Excellent selection, the beer garden is fantastic, a real suntrap. Suffered sun burn, very much my own fault.

Real nice drinks and not bad prices. Only niggle I had was having to wait ages for a drink the two ladies behind the bar was more interested in serving the locals

Traditional pub in Ripon that serves a good selection of well kept real ale. Open fire and dog friendly. Spacious outdoor seating some of which is sheltered. Good choice if you like your ale. Also sells merchandise 🍻 🔥 👕

Lovely little pub, we sat in the bar area which was cosy enough and had some blankets to throw over yourself (was cold from a walk!)

This is the best pub in Ripon, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming, the beer is excellent, no flashing gaming machines or loud music, open fire, pleasant decor, convivial conversation and friendly bar staff.

2nd visit and starting to really like this local pub as my new local. Great beers (incl Cask beer) and friendly service even to a non-local. Lovely outdoor setting with tones of space for families and large groups.

Brilliant pub - really good range of beers. And nice to be able to have a pork pie to go with a pint. Very dog friendly! What's not to like!

What a wonderful bar although they did not serve food they allowed 8 of us to take in fish n chips from a local chippy and provided knives forks and etc the beers were wonderfully tasty and a place I hope to frequent when in the area

Good old fashioned pub with friendly staff. Didn't do food but recommended a fish and chip shop up the road and suggested we bring the back.

Attended a wedding here...lovely pub with period features and a lovely beer garden behind ...Park in Long stay below Sainsbury's and 5 minute walk gets you here.

This is my idea of the perfect pub, as much outside under cover seating (probably more) great staff and the best kept beer (particularly temp) I have tasted in years oh and genuinely dog friendly, if I'm back in Ripon I will return..thank you...

Good selection of beers and a huge garden at the rear. Staff were ok and polite but I wouldn't say cheery! Nice all round pub though and would go back. May 2023 - Staff were cheery and polite and the good selection of beers is still good and varied. Some work seems to have been done on the garden area which seems more open than before? An enjoyable experience and worth returning.

Proper traditional pub off the tourist trail in Ripon. Recommended to us by a friend. Great staff. Great selection of beers. Open fire. No food served although there were a couple of pork pies available. Really enjoyed our visit, would return on our next visit

First time coming to ripon we got told about coming here by people who love ale. We thought let's have a walk from the center. It was a lovely atmosphere and the staff was friendly and helpful. We had the local drinks and would go again

Lovely find in Ripon. Friendly pub serving a wide range of good quality beers. Himself's eyes lit up at the 7 hand pumps! Worth a visit just for the atmosphere.

Have just had my third visit to the Rat. I wish I lived nearer as it's easily in the top three real ale pubs I've ever visited. The Real Ale is superb with a great selection. It's even served in a pint glass matching the pint! The pub is old and traditional, with no TVs or loud music to spoil it. No food is served, but that's even better as there are plenty of good food outlets in Ripon if you want to eat. Landlord Scott is very friendly and knowledgeable and made us feel very welcome. There is also a superb beer garden if the weather is OK. A total 'must visit' if you are a fan of great Real Ale and pubs that still have loads of character. Will definitely be back soon.
