Lovely little pub, we sat in the bar area which was cosy enough and had some blankets to throw over yourself (was cold from a walk!)

What an awful reception and rude bar staff. Felt very unwelcome.

This is the best pub in Ripon, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming, the beer is excellent, no flashing gaming machines or loud music, open fire, pleasant decor, convivial conversation and friendly bar staff.

Did not have food but everything was fine.

Been meaning to call into this pub for years but never did due to it being off the main drab/market place. Cracking pub and ales. Very deceiving from the outside. Will make it my first port of call whenever I'm in Ripon now.

2nd visit and starting to really like this local pub as my new local. Great beers (incl Cask beer) and friendly service even to a non-local. Lovely outdoor setting with tones of space for families and large groups.

Brilliant pub - really good range of beers. And nice to be able to have a pork pie to go with a pint. Very dog friendly! What's not to like!

What a wonderful bar although they did not serve food they allowed 8 of us to take in fish n chips from a local chippy and provided knives forks and etc the beers were wonderfully tasty and a place I hope to frequent when in the area

Good old fashioned pub with friendly staff. Didn't do food but recommended a fish and chip shop up the road and suggested we bring the back.

Attended a wedding here...lovely pub with period features and a lovely beer garden behind ...Park in Long stay below Sainsbury's and 5 minute walk gets you here.

This is my idea of the perfect pub, as much outside under cover seating (probably more) great staff and the best kept beer (particularly temp) I have tasted in years oh and genuinely dog friendly, if I'm back in Ripon I will return..thank you...

Good selection of beers and a huge garden at the rear. Staff were ok and polite but I wouldn't say cheery! Nice all round pub though and would go back. May 2023 - Staff were cheery and polite and the good selection of beers is still good and varied. Some work seems to have been done on the garden area which seems more open than before? An enjoyable experience and worth returning.

Proper traditional pub off the tourist trail in Ripon. Recommended to us by a friend. Great staff. Great selection of beers. Open fire. No food served although there were a couple of pork pies available. Really enjoyed our visit, would return on our next visit

First time coming to ripon we got told about coming here by people who love ale. We thought let's have a walk from the center. It was a lovely atmosphere and the staff was friendly and helpful. We had the local drinks and would go again

Lovely find in Ripon. Friendly pub serving a wide range of good quality beers. Himself's eyes lit up at the 7 hand pumps! Worth a visit just for the atmosphere.

1st visit won't be my last the guest keg ale was to die for.

Have just had my third visit to the Rat. I wish I lived nearer as it's easily in the top three real ale pubs I've ever visited. The Real Ale is superb with a great selection. It's even served in a pint glass matching the pint! The pub is old and traditional, with no TVs or loud music to spoil it. No food is served, but that's even better as there are plenty of good food outlets in Ripon if you want to eat. Landlord Scott is very friendly and knowledgeable and made us feel very welcome. There is also a superb beer garden if the weather is OK. A total 'must visit' if you are a fan of great Real Ale and pubs that still have loads of character. Will definitely be back soon.

Best ale house in the town by far. Good selection of ales great service and a fantastic garden. The stout was in fantastic condition when we were in and the ever changing selection is fantastic.

Absolutely fantastic place lots of real ales to choose from and a beer garden that ticks all the boxes, we've been t Ripon for the Easter Weekend and called in around 1pm for one drink, left at 10pm could leave the place, the staff are fantastic very kind and helpful and if you don't drink please go there for one of there Pork Pies, to die for, as Arnie said We'll Be Back.

Great pub great beer, very friendly. Downside we don't live anywhere near it, hope to return to Ripon later in the year.

Had a night in Ripon and was shocked to discover the state of the pubs. We expected black sheep bitter and log fires but it was like going back 20 years, john smiths and carling! The only decent pub we found was the one eyed rat! Decent cask ale, real pork pies and attentive staff. A shining light in the depressing Ripon pub scene. Would definitely return if stuck in the area again.
