Went with my parents (in their 80s) and my partner. No frontage, a tiny door, you have to ring the bell to get in, which I thought was lovely, A very lovely lady (maybe called Maria?) took our coats and lead us to the table, she called me by my first name, which I thought was lovely (not keen on being called madam), we had our own room within the restaurant, decked out like 'Abigail's Party' (70s decor), it was delightful. Cocktails and food were first class, the staff are very informative and can't do enough for you. Will be going back.

A doorway on Wardour Street opens up to a subterranean collection to small tables. little rooms and alcoves. We found this via a promotion (for three courses and a glass of fizz) and from ringing the doorbell to get in to strolling out into the not-quite-dark summer evening we had a great time. The food is very good and the wine list has some gems, but the best fun is the room. There is a bit of a sixties retro feel to the main room and it was a good spot for people watching, and no doubt being watched in return. It was very cosy for a catch up with a friend (though she thought it wouldn't be quite right for a first date). The staff were efficient, friendly and unobtrusive.

A perfect venue for catching up with old friends. Gin cocktails were a hit, and we had a lovely private booth for our meal. Staff were very friendly, food was delicious. We had no trouble with ordering our dessert after we'd eaten our main, so perhaps staff are taking note of past reviews... If anything, we waited a while sometimes for service, but would rather that than be hurried. Good value for the fixed price menu, given the location.

From the moment the private door opens you are in an eclectic private world in the basement with tunnels and caverns. The service and food is excellent, and for London the prices reasonable. This is a quiet exclusive environment, not suitable for youngsters or groups looking for a lively night out. Any negative comments reflect this mistake. Highly recommended to the right clientele.

We didn't read any reviews of the venue before booking this restaurant and were pleasantly surprised. I would think its not for everyone as the setting is quite intimate, you sit in your own dimly lit individual rooms or booths, so I would say you need to be pretty comfortable with your fellow diners as there's not much in the way of atmosphere. However we were having a catch up with old friends and loved the fact that we could have a good laugh with not much in the way of distractions....we found it a pretty cool venue - a little different. The service was faultless, really great staff. I would say the food was good but my husband said very good!

I've visited this restaurant twice, once with a large group and once with a colleague. The first time we ate off a special menu as part of a deal with a glass of a bubbles included. The food was designed as small plates to share. The food was ok, the desserts were the highlight for us. However on my second visit the chef had changed and it was a short menu with a handful of choices. The food was better, however the selection isn't great. As I'm gluten free and pescetarian I was very limited so I had two starters (they did increase the size of the second starter to a main). Thankfully the food was tasty and not too expensive. It's not the best food available in the area but the cocktails are nice and it's something slightly different. The service was incredibly slow though, it took at least half an hour for our food order to be taken as they didn't realise we wanted to eat?? If you're relaxed just enjoy it, but avoid if you want quick service and a large variety of menu options.

We booked this last minute for last night, it really was a toss up between here and another place in Covent Garden...(regrettably I wished we went to the latter) Yes it's quirky in respect that it's just a door with a plaque on the front and you ring the bell to gain entry. Sadly the quirky for me stops here. On entering, it felt like a clumsy free for all with some one taking our coats in a small over cramped lobby, the table wasn't ready so was encouraged to have a drink in the bar area which was a peculiar set up in itself. It felt like we were took down to an old sixties brothel, with musty seating and barely any ambience. I appreciate they are trying to "theme" it this way, but it lacked charm. Something that should of felt warm and nostalgic....actually made me feel slightly uncomfortable instead. The young girl who took our coats tried to assist us with our drinks whilst we waited for the table....she was approached by another lady who point blank took the tray of wines off her and said "that's not your job, you aren't supposed to do that!" The young girl scurried off upstairs and it all felt a bit Faulty Towers, and then I felt sorry for the young girl who was scorned! Again, doesn't make for a relaxing environment?! I booked through Bookatable and looking at there sample menu online, I couldn't wait to see what the full menu was like. Sadly.... The sample menu was offering something far better and more than the mere selection of there A La Carte. 4 starters to choose from? And not one grabbed me. I never struggle to choose at least something but the choice was so poor. I opted for some cold salad starter with bacon and egg..... This did come with black pudding too but I opted not to have this....basically, this dish was last chance saloon as there wasn't much else. We waited ages for everything. Our bottle of wine, our order to be taken, the food between each course, in fact there was couples in after us that was tucking into starters and our order wasn't even taken at this point! I asked for a romantic table, a booth maybe as many reviewers on here have said that they've accommodated this and it's been fantastic. In fact our table was stuck in at the very end, no booth, in the middle of a rather depressing overcrowded decorated room. I was sat way lower than my partner because he was on a chair and I was on a sofa, it lacked all intimacy and romance when I clearly requested a booth online for that reason?! The starter was painful to eat, and was no sensory pleasure to my tastebuds whatsoever. It was basically a salad you could of prepared at home, there was nothing award winning about it. It was all very dry, barely a dressing, bacon was so hard....it was a real disappointment and I left a vast majority of mine. My main was the Beef Fillet and my partner had the pork belly, both again were pretty mediocre, they didn't make you think "wow, I can't get enough of this" just merely "ok". It's such a shame because I expected so much more from this place, my expectations were rather high and was left feeling like a damp squib over this place. I always have a dessert however full because I like to try every course but I really didn't want to here and opted to drink up, pay and go as I was disappointed enough and couldn't wait to leave. I'm unsure what they are really trying to do here, if it's an interpretation of the classy swanky sixties, why did I feel cramped up in a musty small room that is befitting to my grandmas lounge?! The service was very slow, barely any attention or detail was paid to us, the food was was poor considering the selection is very small, you would of thought the dishes would be outstanding to warrant a meagre choice......but it simply was something you'd cook at home, lacking flavour, lacking a wow factor even. Very much like its surroundings, the food was drab, depressing and uninteresting. We went back to our hotel still hungry and thoroughly disappointed from this offering in soho. Could it be just a bad one off first time experience? Who knows? I'm not prepared to spend my hard earned cash to come here another time to find out!

Came for post-work drinks. The entrance is fun with a peep hole and a doorbell to enter however the host wasn't the most greeting and had a pretentious attitude for a place that has no exclusivity. It is an overhyped small bar/restaurant in a basement with very contemporary furnishings and private booths. I felt like I was in some kind of designer lighting showroom with the interiors being overdone by too many lights over tables. I don't understand why you would need so many lights - it looked cluttered and positioned just for designer lightings sake. Drinks were amazing and the waiting staff were great. Cocktails if anything are a little too strong but I suppose that is a positive. Plenty of other more contemporary cocktail bars in the area - go somewhere else.

A friend booked us in on a £30 4 course deal with a glass of champagne. The discreet entrance and welcome is a nice touch and our table for 4 was in an intimate cave. Staff were very attentive, but sadly the food let this place down. The mackerel was tough and dry, the chicken was ordinary, served on a plate of lumpy mash. The lamb was just ok. The desserts, whilst delicious were miniscule. Would I return? I had a pleasant enough time, but with so many terrific restaurants in London, I'd try somewhere else. I'm not sure really what this restaurant wants to be. I didn't get the 'Mad Men' vibe, and the bar area seemed like a soulless waiting room. Our table, due to its location meant that there was no ambience from the rest of the venue. Staff are great - perhaps more of a drinking venue though?

We went here to celebrate my friend's birthday. Never been here before but from first impressions it was a pretty cool venue. Good food and the service was really quick. But when my friends were at the bar, spilt a drink and went to clean it up, a guy who claimed to be the owner (who the waiting staff confirmed was not ACTUALLY the official owner) had a go at them. He accused them of disrespecting the place and ruining the atmosphere. After my friends questioned exactly what it was they did wrong, the guy told them to leave, so we all did. We all paid and left, bar my two friends who had been yelled at in front of the entire bar. The manager/owner subsequently called the police. Following our own discussions with the police, the manager/owner withdrew his "complaint". I doubt the police had ever been called over a spilt drink before. Either way. We will never be returning to this place again! A birthday party ruined for us and a 15 seater table empty on a saturday night for them!

After having been here numerous times before and only having impeccable experiences, I decided to have my birthday here. The food was beautiful and the service was attentive as always. A few of us were in the main bar area when one of us spilt their drink - so we got a napkin from a nearby side table to clear it up. The manager then came up to us calling us rude, disruptive and "disrespecting the place". When we challenged him he told us to leave. He seemed somewhat more amicable when he realised that we would also be departing with our full party of 15 and leaving the largest table in the place empty on a Saturday night - though the damage had been done and the evening had been ruined.Awful awful management. Will never return here. Such a shame as this genuinely used to be my favourite hide out in London!

This place is so good at getting everything almost right... The wait staff greet you back, "Nice to see you again Sir". Lovely, but maybe not ideal when you're with a new date. The cocktails are great, apart from the espresso cocktail which is disappointingly sweet and tiny. The bar is fabulous, until there are more people than seats, whereby the barmen can't keep up and the nose becomes unwelcome. The service is great, apart from the guy that doesn't understand English and can;t take a drinks order. The food is epic, but let down by one of the starters being tainted in the fridge and leaving me wishing it was freshly cut and plated. The cheeseboard is from Neil's Yard and to die for, but the portion way too small. The secret entrance is ALWAYS ruined by their being a queue outside, more often than not in the rain. The secret is a complete give-away with the menu and plants outside. The manager serves rather than actually managing. Kudos but please see to the staff, seeing to the guests chap.

Tempted by a mid-week deal Hannah and I cut through Covent Garden and headed to the newly opened Old Tom & English. Pictures online depicted a sumptuous Mad Men inspired lounge with low lighting and low slung couches. I was hoping for a luxurious and memorable experience. It's a tricky spot to find from the street, you have to ring the bell on a closed nondescript door. On our arrival it took two rings even though we could see the lady through the gap. Moving inside the friendly hostess took coats and bags and showed us to our table. The decor was indeed quite nice and the photos online are accurate however it is MUCH smaller than you would think. Look closer though and you realise it is a very sneakily laid out room; chairs are small and many tables on the outside share a long sofa type seat with no opportunity to sit opposite your companion, rather you end up sitting shoulder to shoulder. We noticed that there was lots of little semi-private tables around the edge of the room though which I would imagine makes for a great group dinning experience. Our deal included a glass of champagne but Hannah doesn't drink alcohol and had a choice of two mocktails. The mocktail was just fine and my champagne was pretty poor quality and not really even cold. The waiter came to take our order but we weren't really ready. We asked if we could just start by ordering starters which he said we could. But right after that he indicated he wanted to take our order for each of the four courses including dessert. In hindsight we should have said no, but pretty much just quickly made some decisions on the spot and handed back the menus. There was no reason that he needed to take all of the orders from us as there were only two tables other than us. This was not a busy restaurant and we thought he could have made more of an effort to make the experience more tailored to us.There was actually quite a wait for our first course to arrive which was surprising as they were both essentially salads. If you didn't want a salad to start your only other choice was chips. Yes, just chips, as a starter. Hannah's starter really was more a side dish though and was really poorly presented on a boring regular plate. The second course was again quite slow to arrive and was quite a let down again. Really small portions with just a few forkfuls of protein per dish with the same handful of pea shoots accompanying and taking up half the plate. My fish dish was unfortunately greasy too. My third course and final one before dessert was chicken supreme with a huge lump of mash potato... lump being the key word there, how a restaurant charging £30 for a set menu can serve lumpy potato is beyond me. The chicken portion was half a breast and not satisfying.Dessert was probably the strongest, certainly in terms of presentation but the slice of chocolate cake was only about 4 fork full's and the ice-cream was a single scoop with some biscuity sprinkle on the side. The same sprinkle was on both deserts. Two of the main courses seemed to share a redundant sprig of redcurrant and these just felt like a cost cutting measure. Before the food arrived I ordered a cocktail, these are all £10 so my bill was £45. For £45 you can have an extraordinarily more impressive meal than this, even in central London. There is absolutely no reason to come here and I would recommend you try elsewhere.

The interior is reminiscent of an private members lounge and that may well be the feel they are going for, which makes a very nice change from the usual restaurants in Soho. The space seems to be set up as several rooms so you don't feel packed in. Generally the place does not seem to know what it wants to be - a drinking lounge or restaurant (this Tripadvisor currently says it a pub?!?). The menu tries to be different by asking the diner to order a dish from each course (the special offer menu we got was a slimed down version of the usual 4 courses). But the place could not handle us wanting to order our dessert after we had our savouries and said we had to order all courses at the same time. The first course was vegetable and really should not have been served on its own - it is a side dish and my grilled little gem came out limp and sad looking (was actually served on a side dish plate and the presentation made it look even more pathetic). Though it tasted nice the wait was too long for a quite restaurant and a sad bit of lettuce. Before we had finished our vegetables out came the fish. My scallops were nice and well presented. My friend's deep fried battered sea bass had excellent crispy batter and very little fish. Suddenly we got new plates but our cutlery remained the same (odd and the guy really should have cleared away the old plates before putting the new ones down - it was so clear the guy did not know what he was doing). A long wait before our meat dishes were brought out. My dish came out well before my friend's. It was well cooked and possibly the best dish of the evening. My friend's chicken, when it eventually came was just a nice Sunday roast with lots of chunky mash and a very nice sauce. My flourless chocolate cake dessert was a very slim and unmemorable slice and we guessed it was probably brought in. My friend's rice pudding ice cream was one single boule of cream ice cream - don't know where the rice pudding thing came in?The service was more miss than hit (one professional waiter, one with flailing arms who just reaches over you to pick up a glass without asking and the guy who seems to be in charge walks around and is not very effective). The food was a definite miss but it had a nice atmosphere for having a few nice relaxing drinks.

I recently visited Old Tom and English after a colleague recommended it, and I cannot praise it enough! Just off Oxford Street, the lady behind the mysterious grey door was extremely friendly and led us inside past the beautifully glossy bar to our table, which was a secret booth space lit with candles- perfect for an intimate date.We indulged in a delicious meal- their chips are some of the best I've ever had, and went on to have their braised gem lettuce with anchovies alongside the wonderfully rich braised chicken I had which was paired with melt-in-your-mouth potatoes and fresh veg. We asked the the manager what he recommended for a tasty gin cocktail and Mario kindly suggested their classic negroni and it was a great choice! Strong but not overly sweet it was perfect to sip alongside my meal.I indulged further and had the flour less chocolate cake which was almost too beautiful to eat! The cream had a touch of whisky in it and was matched with a little bit of crumble which provided the perfect amount of crunch to the dish.I was so full I couldn't move- but I enjoyed every bite!Definitely going back again for more cocktails. The price wasn't unreasonable either, and the menu has something for everyone.

We had heard of Old Tom English, but neither of us had dined there. Great place with an intriguing entrance somewhat like a club. Even more so as the establishment is in the basement. Brilliant bar with amazing cocktails. We went through to the dining room with its open fireplace complete with (artificial) flaming logs. We each had a glass of Cote de Rhone from and excellent wine list. Time to eat! We decided to totally check the menu by sharing dishes. It was superb. The main dish we chose was a beautifully prepared chicken breast together with pear & pecan salad. And... what the hell! Great fat cut fries. Not expensive either. Go try, but be cool. I would suggest it is a romantic location to go with that special person.

My friend and I booked a table for 7.30 on the BookaTable 4 dishes & champagne offer. Finding the place is a challenge: it is just a gold bell in a door. You are let in to a tiny landing and led downstairs to what must have been a basement flat at some point. The bar is small, nicely decorated and lulls you into believing you are going to enjoy your evening. On arrival we were told our table wasn't ready, which was annoying as we had rushed to get there and missed out on some of the Lumiere installations at Kings Cross. 50 mins later our table was finally ready, by which time the bar was packed with people waiting to be seated. At no point did anyone show us a menu, take our order, offer us something to take the edge off, etc. We found the menu and were rather confused to be faced with headings of 'Vegetable', 'Fish', 'Meat', 'Dessert'. The vegetable dishes didn't seem like starters, so we assumed this would be served with the fish and/or the meat dishes. The 'restaurant' is no more than a converted lounge, into which they have tried to cram too many diners. Seats are banked around the walls so that people have to sit next to each other rather than opposite and there are a couple of tables in the centre - sitting there made us feel like goldfish in a bowl. The waiter eventually came to give us a menu and he seemed a bit flustered when we said we knew what we wanted. He promptly left without asking us what we wanted to drink. Drinks arrived 10mins later and then we waited again... after 1hr 30m we complained to the waiter who was totally dismissive and said food was on its way.1hr 40m after we'd arrived, our 'Vegetable' dish appeared. My friend had ordered chips, assuming they'd accompany her 'fish' or 'meat' dish. I had ordered the braised lettuce on the same assumption. We waited a few minutes for something else to turn up or someone to proffer an explanation, but in the absence of either, we decided to start eating before the food got cold. My friend's chips were covered in fake smoke and my lettuce was so salty that 2 mouthfuls were enough.A further 10m passed with nobody coming to ask if everything was OK. We finally decided that we'd had enough, having wasted nearly 2hrs when we really wanted to see the rest of Lumiere. We flagged down the lady who had greeted us initially - the only person who really seemed to care - who admitted they'd had problems in the kitchen and that there would be no charge. This restaurant has the potential to be a cozy, boutique, fine dining venue but it needs to reduce its seating, change the menu, train the waiting staff and improve its food.

This is a quirky little place, starting with the unusual entrance, a door with a porthole which makes it look as though you are entering a private club. We didn't have a booking but were greeted at the door by a warm and friendly lady who showed us downstairs as we were after a cocktail. There's an intimate lounge area with some rather odd seating arrangements where you can eat or drink, bar stools to just drink, small booths for a more intimate atmosphere and larger rooms for groups . The low level lighting and music give it a supper club atmosphere and about £11 for a cocktail including service is about average for central London. Food is imaginative although portions are small so this is a place I'd go back to for a light supper with a few drinks rather than a full meal. Staff are lovely.

I did not know what to expect when I found this place online. Marked at street level only by a single doorbell, we rang it and the small hatch opened. We were greeted by a stoney faced woman who enquired what we wanted. We said we had a reservation and her face lit up. She opened door, asked us if we had been before and took our coats. We were shown downstairs into what can only be described as a high end 60's living room. It was fantastically retro and immacutely finished. We were seated on the sofa in front of the fire place where we had a few plates each and cocktails. It is a tad on the pricey side and the food portions are small. But such is the quality here that the price is to be expected. The service was second to none and the atmosphere, whilst relaxed, was electric.Being largely unmarked from the street and "reservation only", it was quiet though not uncomfortably so. My sister had been there before and advised we ate an hour or so before going. Which I found a little strange. However when we were served our food I understood why. The standard of the food is good, very delicious in fact, cooked to perfection. But don't go expecting a feast. And certainly don't go if you're starving as you'll be disappointed. The food wasn't all served at once either. Which is odd. You'll be given a two hour slot. We roughly had 7 dishes, main only and our last dish was served almost two hours after we arrived. The atmosphere was great and the cocktails kept us merry. We really enjoyed it and would like to return one day.

My friend landed quite late and I wanted to treat him to a nice meal for his first night in London. Well I've rarely been so embarrassed! First of all we were sat on a row of chairs, which would have made conversation quite difficult so my friend sat in front of us on a sofa. Instead of offering to give her a chair, the waiters constantly walked through, between her and her plate. She literally had to sit back while about to have a bite of her food because an unapologetic waitress wanted to walk to the kitchen. As soon as we sat down, we got asked to order as soon as possible because the kitchen was already closed. We arrived on time though. Why offer late bookings if the kitchen closes before the starters order? Anyway. The food was average. Very small portions. Should I say baby portions. We got charged for food we did not order. The waitress seemed quite eager to go home and kept taking plates away when we were still eating. We were not offered any dessert. Then they started to make us feel like then wanted to close. Started to turn off the music. Then the heating. Then brought the bill on the table and asked us to leave while turning off the lights and leaving us in pitch dark. Unbelievable and insulting behavior. I would never recommend this restaurant. Everything from the booking to the service including the food was a complete joke. And a pricey one! One word : avoid.

A recent dinner event I organized at old Tom and English was slightly disappointing . I was immediately impressed with the the venue though when I arrived at my 830pm booking for 12 people our table was not ready. For 60 minutes we waited at the bar with not even the slightest apology from any of the staff. When we were finally taken to our area it was not even the area I had selected for my guests. Then throughout the evening the waitress' were inattentive and relatively unhelpful. Then upon leaving not only did they ask us to leave before our drinks were finished but the lights were turned off whilst some of my guests were still at the table. That I thought was the icing on the cake.Has lots of potential though.

Came here for a friends birthday meal. The food was very tasty, the place itself is rather interesting and quirky down in a basement. We had our own private booth which was nice. However the waitress who originally served us seemed in a bit of an irritable mood and it showed in her customer service sadly, either that or she is just downright rubbish but I'll give her the benefit of the doubt. Later on, another waitress served us who was much friendlier.Bit of a wait between meals but hey ho, nice not to be rushed. Overall a nice dinner :)

We went as 2 couples on a bookatable offer, £35 for 4 dishes and a glass of champagne. For this reason it was value for money.I liked the quirkiness of the restaurant, outside its just a blue door with a brass door bell. We were seated in a little separate room which was a lovely touch and offered our champagne straight away. We had booked the 4 taster dishes but was never offered a look at the ala carte menu.Once ordered, we must of waited around 30 minutes for the food, which wasn't a problem but then the food started to come out all at once, which I found odd and we was not notified of this when seated.3 of us got our fish dish, then 1 main came up and then we waited for the other fish dish, then the sides came up and one of our party must of waited a further 20 minutes for there main, even after asking the waitress twice, at which point the rest of us had eaten our food.I ordered roasted veg as a side which came out cold, which I found odd, seizing as roasted would imply it would be hot.Deserts were fine but to be honest I've had better. The overall experience was good, the price, location, restaurant and staff, and would defo do another bookatable deal again. Just not sure I'd hurry back or recommend it.

Old Tom is a very unusual restaurant, more akin to a private members dining room. We had our doubts but we're very pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere is intimate and the food outstanding. The service was also excellent-if anything it was too efficient as we were whisked through the 4 courses rather too quickly although to be fair we were on a Star deal so I suppose they wanted to free up our table as there aren't that many!Fully recommend this restaurant for a special occasion- we shall certainly return.

We nearly missed the enterance - that is we passed it and had to go back. There is just a door and you need to ring the bell to be let in. The restaurant is downstairs - modern and quite relaxed. We were placed in a sofa with a very low table.probably not a place to go if you have a bad back - but we enjoyed it. The service was very good. We got a glass of champagne imediately while studying the menu. We started off with chips and a warm baby leaf salad - both tasty. For fish we had scallops and deep fried cod which were wonderful. The pigs cheek was so tender it nearly fell apart, where as the sweetbread of lamb was not at all to our liking (try something else) We loved the desserts - chocolate cake and lemon posset. I would definitely recommend this place - four courses and a glass of champagne for £30 is a great deal - especially as the waitors were attentive and polite.

I have visited Old Tom and English five times before as I love their cocktails and decor. The hideaway location on Wardour Street makes it a big hot when I've taken friends there but after last night's experience I won't be going back.I booked a table 3 days in advance for a Friday evening at 9pm without issue. However, I arrived at 9pm with my date with no one answering the door for around three minutes. Not a great start. Once we were greeted at the door we had to stand around awkwardly at the top of the stairs for a further 2 minutes as someone was currently sitting at our table. Then, after eventually getting our coats taken we were told to wait for a further 5 minutes at the bar twiddling our thumbs while our table was prepared. When we were finally seated we were told that we would need to move unless we ordered food. This has never happened on my previous visits and I got the impression they were just making the rules up as they went along. I didn't fancy spending a night perched at the bar but the two £7 deserts were ordered along with our bottle of wine were slightly laughable....A tiny scoop of ice cream with cinnamon sprinkled on top.For the price I expect seamless service and while their drinks are good, they are not head a shoulders above other upscale Soho bars. I was really unimpressed and slightly embarrassed after talking the place up to my dining partner so I won't be returning.

The waitress was quite rubbish really. We had to ask for our champagne and then was told that 3 of the options they had on the menus was not available... quite frustrating as well was after our starters we was then told that another of the mains which 2 of us had ordered was also no longer available and to be fair she was quite flippant about it all as well.... seems to me she had had a night of complaints and any time we asked about something (or not so much complained but voiced our unhappiness that so much was off the menu) she just literally shrugged her shoulders as if it was just one of those things. Quirky decor but won't be back. We reflected this by asking for the tip to be removed from the bill and did not leave one.

Lovely hideaway and food was superb. The service was questionable. At 10.30pm our bill was brought to us as they were cashing up which is slightly rude as basically they were telling us to move on out. However, at 10.40 the lights started to be dimmed and brightened to try and get us to move (we had full glasses of wine) and 10.50 the music was turned off and we were asked to leave numerous times. We were told that their licence only allowed them to serve alcohol until 11pm and we had to be out by 11pm (never heard that one before). We were made to feel that we were not welcome and the service was very pushy. When waiting for our coats we were stood by their licence details which contradicts all actions. Their licence to serve alcohol is until 11.30pm on a Thursday, funny we were chucked out by 11pm - what started out as a lovely evening was ruined by the terrible service and unnecessary pushiness.

Described as a "Secret underground Soho restaurant", let me advise visitors that finding Old Tom & English is not easy UNLESS you know exactly what to look for: there's a little grey door, that looks like it's part of a façade, a little way down from Oxford Street, in Wardour Street. You're looking for 187b. Press the brass buzzer dead centre of the doorway and it will be opened for you. A steep staircase reveals that the restaurant occupies an old 18th-century Soho basement. Since this was booked through Bookatable (a lovely idea, and most convenient, as you only have to pay on the night- no vouchers involved!) we were entitled to the Star Deal Sample Menu: being any four sample dishes and a glass of champagne at a reasonable £30 per person. I defaulted to the pan friend scallops, while my companion opted for the Dover sole, which was filleted for him (as it's still a beast of a fish to de-bone). We both then indulged in faultless succulent roll neck of lamb and what must be some of the best home-made chips in London. And although I was tempted to sample the flourless chocolate cake, we both decided upon the almond crumble with cinnamon & salted caramel, which was absolutely heavenly and not too heavy, and none of the flavours overpowered any of the others. Old Tom & English serves modern British food and vintage cocktails, but if there's one thing I'm not sure of here it's the seating arrangement. It's not to my taste and I'm glad we were early as we were afforded one of the better tables, rather than couples sharing intimate seats on one of two long (but what appeared to be plushly upholstered) benches. It almost seemed to be a micro-version of a burlesque venue. Although I must say the choice of background music enhanced the setting perfectly. My companion was perched a little uncomfortably throughout though, so I'm glad he didn't have to share a bench. I'd recommend asking specifically for a table with chairs, unless you're into cosying up over the hors d'oeuvres. The service was faultless. I initially thought the manager a tad on the frosty side, but this was soon forgotten in the warmth and charm shown by our server (whose name I was remiss in not getting for this review). But overall, not a bad night. Not a bad night out at all. And certainly a novel experience for anyone visiting from out of town.

Very intriguing. We were sat in a booth for four, although it was fun for a first visit, it was quite camped, warm and removed from the atmosphere of the main restaurant area. Our waiter was fab and very helpful, he had a great sense of humour and was very accommodating. Our food was really very good and interesting. There where no problems adapting the choices for a vegetarian. We finished with excellent irish coffees! My husband and I came here for our 10th wedding anniversary and were so disappointed on every level! I had emailed the restaurant after making the booking online (bookatable) to ask for a quiet table as it was our anniversary. They had taken no notice of this and put us slap bang in the middle of the room with everyone facing us from the sofas. The place was dark, noisy and squashed. The waitress was literally running from table to bar and there was still a 30 min wait between courses (if that's what you can call them). They were tapas size dishes which meant we started with a tiny bowl of chips and then waited half an hour for two scallops, then another half an hour for a mouthful of lamb stew. Very overpriced and then they had the nerve to bring the bill with the service charge already added on - I refused to pay it - and the guy (I assumed the manager as he was the only one wearing a suit) didn't even ask why I refused to pay the service, he just shrugged and printed us off another bill. Dreadful service.

My wife and I ate here for my birthday whilst in town. The whole experience was fantastic. From the moment you find the "secret" door, ring the bell and are shown down to your table to the funky 60's decor you know it's a very different kind of place. My only criticism would be that some of the tables along the side are high in relation to your sitting position. But apart from that everything else was excellent. Most importantly the food was really very very good - I would just say I dropped the rating from Excellent to Very Good as I felt the choice of vegetarian food was rather limited - if there had been a 4.5 button I would have hit that. However had I been a meat eater having seen the food others I was dining with had I would have rated it a 5. Service was excellent - a 5 on that. Great choice of cocktails, and for London not outrageous prices. Will return to this place I am sure

Booked a table for two with a friend for a meal and a catch up. This was perhaps mistake number one - this place is for couples, and for couples only. Behind a handsome anonymous door, you have to knock to be let in - like a posh speakeasy . The red light above the door pays a nod to the traditional profession of Soho, and you enter a tiny vestibule and are taken downstairs. It's dark, with grey walls, 1960s style very elegant tables and chairs - and low seats. The tables are really only for two, and they are tiny, and we were seated on a low banquette. Anyone over 5ft 4 inches will struggle eating here. The service was attentive, and the house champagne was ice cold and of fine quality. Most people seemed to be on cocktails, but we had come for dinner, and so dine we would. The dishes are the very fashionable tapas sized - it's possible in London to eat Italian tapas, Greek tapas, Indian tapas,..and now English tapas. We ordered 4 dishes each, so we could share. Beetroot and goat's curd salad was very good, if under seasoned, the small vessel of chips (a dish on its own) were the best I've tasted - ever. Scallops - 1 each - were small and a bit underwhelming, the sea bass came deep fried, which was interesting - but ultimately wrong. Lamb with artichoke puree was delicious, and the pig cheek flavoursome, crunchy, and very moreish. Dill ice cream was certainly interesting, but perhaps not to be repeated, and the flourless chocolate cake was a triumph. We had a bottle of Crozes Hermitage, which was not as good as we'd hoped at £40.A trip to the ladies' loo past the elegant bar hinted at something that struck us when we entered - the place smells very strongly of damp. Some of the elegant paintwork was peeling, bits of plaster were pushing through, and the very low level of lighting could not hide the fact that the damp proofing needs attention. It's clear that a lot of thought and money have gone into creating the sophisticated ambiance of the restaurant, and the staff are very, very good - but I think they need to sort out the damp if they are going to maintain the atmosphere.

Bigger parties may get an alcove, smaller ones seats at a series of sofa's with low tables.Cocktails are interesting and well made and there is a reasonable wine list. The food is very good indeed , sometimes tremendous. Stand out dishes were rump of lamb with cauliflower puree and mint oil, a special of beef onglet, smoked eel salad and desserts of flourless salted chocolate cake and rice pudding ice cream. Best of all are wonderful triple cooked chips with just a hint of smoky bacon - perhaps some bacon fat in their cooking medium?Between 4 we had 13 plates to share and three (smallish) bowls of chips, a cocktail each and two bottles of mid-range wine. I have been to many restaurants around the world but my dining experience at Old Tom & English has to be the worst ever. I have tried very hard to remember if I have ever experienced the series of mishaps me and my other 9 dining companions endured at this restaurant and nothing has ever compared to this incompetent dining experience. From the moment we arrived and were seated in a hot humid alcove where we had to use the menus as fans until the air conditioning eventually pumped out enough cold air to cool the alcove to the point when we received the bill. Only 2 of my dining companions actually got the four courses they ordered, the rest of us only got two or three of the four courses we ordered, I don’t know what was happening in the kitchen but we were there from 7.30 – 10.30pm and apart from one of my fellow diners the rest of us had to give the dessert a miss as we could stay no longer. The restaurant did knock 60% of the bill, however on reflection, as only two of my fellow diners had the full four courses, we were most probably charged for what we actually had. They also give us a discount voucher for 50% off on our next visit, however, I don’t think I would waste my time going to this restaurant again. A big disappointment all round.

I had been meaning to visit for some time and we found ourselves in the Soho area a couple of weeks ago so I took the opportunity and went looking. I really enjoy 'secret' venues and speakeasy type bars. Old Tom & English does the concept well although I'm not convinced it is really that 'hidden'... We were there fairly early (about 7pm) and I do think it is probably a later night type of venue. It was cosy and cool and playing some atmospheric jazz when we arrived but was fairly empty. The cocktails were amazing and the service was very good. My partner had a glass of red which was also excellent. We had only come for drinks so I can't comment on the food. The couples eating looked happy and relaxed however. If you are looking for a late night, intimate, cool venue or are eating then I would recommend a visit. I am not sure it was quite what we were looking for at 7pm on a sunny Saturday but that is no fault of Old Tom & English's!

They did come and hustle us out of our table at the 2 hour mark but we were done dining anyway. Would go back.

Okay, so it didn't start well. It was pouring with rain yesterday and I walked past the door 3 times as I didn't know what I was looking for but the lady on the phone was lovely and directed me to the place. You have to ring the doorbell to get in so immediately has the feel of exclusivity. My friend and I were booked in for dinner (we go to a different restaurant every month) and this was the choice for May. So I waited at the bar for her. The wine by the glass is limited but very well priced (glass for £7 but the house was only £5.50) and thankfully it was pleasant enough to drink.Dinner is very cosy. You have a small round table and you sit next to each other rather than opposite (I prefer to sit next to my companions anyway). The meal is like tapas. We had the roll neck of lamb, guinea fowl, pig cheek, seabass and scallops. We had one side of chips and then we had a flourless chocolate cake and the lemon and thyme mini doughnuts. We both agreed that our favourite was the pig cheek- it was just beautiful, but we couldn't fault any of the dishes that we ordered- every single bit of it was perfect and the waiters were friendly and knowledgeable.Of all the restaurants we go to, this is the first one that we will be returning to. It was just outstanding and we loved the cosy exclusivity that it had to offer. The one downside of all of it, was that it was still raining when we left! This is an absolute must.

There is something always fun about going to a bar or restaurant that is hard to find and in Old Tom and English you have that ...after walking past this establishment for months without noticing it I was pleasantly surprised to find that big brass bell and two minutes later I'm sitting in a very funky bar. We were served by a very friendly waiter who ran us through out food and drink options and we dived in. The cocktails are superb ...large, strong and very well priced. The food is also superb ..tapas style.. and we ordered a range of different options all cooked to perfection. This establishment feels like a private members club without any membership fee, its well priced, the food its great the service is superb and you can impress your friends or clients in taking them to this establishment ;0)

Me and my friends/familly were here already so many times and we know that this is not the last time at all!. Where can I start, first time I came in here at December of 2014. Every time I am coming to this secret & cosy place we are looked after from start to finish. The food is fantastic, delicious taste, wonderful presentation.Deserts: I never liked before untill I tried in here! Already know all of them, also I could say that about all cocktails as well. Each of them are unique and everyone can find the best choice for themselves. Entering this place feels like opening doors to secret Narnia - You start to feel special, but the way how waiting staff is communicating with you makes you feel even more special than you have ever imagined. The service very friendly and professional without feeling any robotic.Everything just the way you want it if you plan to treat someone or have amazing and unforgettable evening.I just love this place and would definately recommend for everyone.

Once you ring a bell, you will never forget about this place! This marvelous British place gives you everything! Starting with nice welcoming and seating, continuing with mouthwatering food (specially guinea fowl) and perfectly balanced drinks (smoked old fashioned must to try!!!), not to mention desserts - foodgasm! Could not help but notice professional staff members! Me and my boyfriend were really annoying with all the questions, but staff were so friendly and answered all of them by making us feel like home. We (well ok, I) were/was so curious how that amazing flourless salted chocolate cake can exist in this planet and be so addictively good! Well, I got to talk to the chef Fabian and he explained me how. It just can! And the atmosphere! So romantic and cozy! Hands in the air, can't wait to have my birthday dinner with my family here! (already booked)

As the secret door opened, it made us feel like we were about to be transported into a magical world away from the tiny streets of soho. We sat down at our table and the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. They were attentive and not at all over-bearing. The food was delicious, especially the eggs and mushroom on toast. Had the perfect meal here.

Went here for an early dinner before going to the theatre. From the outside you wouldn't know it was there.Inside is like a 1950s private club - tiny desk with a cloakroom and then you are taken downstairs where there are lots of comfy nooks and crannies with an intimate atmosphere.Interesting and reasonably priced cocktails and wine. The menu is described as tapas style which it is BUT some of the portions are too big for tapas and we really over-ordered (guided by the waiter!).The food itself was very tasty and nicely presented.Definitely worth a try.

My wife and I can't claim to be hipsters, but our son and daughter in law do, so they found this almost painfully hip spot hidden away in Soho. You'd better have a reservation and give the cabbie the exact street number, there is no identification on the outside. Inside a bar and several small eating rooms, don't think booths, think bomb shelters, but all very cool. Wardour St., was hopping in the sixties, clubs and bars mostly. I bantered with the waitress and swore I had been in the building back then. She told our group it had been a brothel for 40 years and I had to back paddle quickly. It's tapas sized portions of English favorites, do you love Marmite?. All very cool, hip and tasty, nothing memorable but most important, at our advanced ages - we were seen there.

This is a nice new place that only opened October 2014. They do British food in tapas style - eg rump of lamb, lamb sweetbread salad, scallops, etc. They recommended 2-3 dishes per person. We had 6 between two of us plus dessert. We left satisfied but not stuffed full! The food itself was very nice - particularly the flourishes accompanying the meat. Cocktails were also nice, although not a huge range and mostly with gin. I tried 2 and they were good, the smoky original was my favourite, with a hint of sweetness. They made a delicious non alcoholic cocktail for my wife with rhubarb and vanilla or something!Very nice surroundings - like being in a cool lounge somewhere. Be aware that this place is easy to miss - it is all downstairs so at street level there is only a rather inconspicuous door so we walked past it twice! Kind of adds to the charm though. Dishes are not cheap but not outrageous for the area and style - with drinks came to about £50 per person. I'd happily recommend. Exceptional service from the staff - super friendly and helpful.

On the site of the late, lamented (at least by me) Coal Vaults, Old Tom & English is a very different vibe: whereas the CV had an edgy, Shoreditch feel, OT&E is more like a lounge. In fact, with the fake fire and sofas, it reminded me nothing more than the Concorde Lounge in Terminal Five, but without the joy of being whisked away somewhere glamorous once drinks had been supped and food taken on, only a cold, wet Wardour Street. Unlike the Concorde Lounge (although much like Concorde)...

It is a very pleasant place to gain strength after a walk through London and continue walking through the park to reach other points of interest. interest. Although we only had coffee, I could see that they also offer food that looked good, the price was not excessive compared to other places in the city, since what we ordered was good and the views were spectacular.

A hidden gem in Fitzrovia. I often come here for work meetings with clients during the week. A great selection of gins, wines and spirits. They also have a great ale rotation.

Henry’s closed about a month ago as the tenants, Stonegate pub co, decided to let it go due to a rent hike by the owners. I’ve submitted this to Google but they haven’t amended this to closed yet - so I’m writing this review to try save people from getting there expecting it to be open as I witnessed recently. There is a planning application on the front door for its next usage - see photo.
