We arrived 45mins early but we were made welcome and soon had a refreshing drink in front of us. The menu covered everything I like and more besides they were totally flexible with what you had with any dish chips -mash fresh vegetables or salad and the volume of food was more than you could eat. I did say to the lady that she should have been a taxidermist not a waitress and she asked why and I said that they stuff animals and I was well and truly stuffed LOL.

Enjoyed a lovely home cooked evening meal here tonight whilst staying in Wick on our NC500 trip. It felt like going round for dinner at your friends house, intimate and charming. Garlic mushrooms to start followed by haddock and chips. Open fire warms both the bar and the lounge and to eat to the sound of wood cracking on a cold night was simply wonderful.

We were staying down the road, so walked up here for a pub meal. Such a cosy place - we stayed in the bar (not the lounge), with a real fire. It’s an old blacksmith’s turned into a pub, so very atmospheric. The food (we had the roast pork) was very good (not outstanding, but really tasty and good value too). Chatting to the barmaid was great - tips from a local to Aussie tourists. Well done!

On holiday for the week and was my wife's birthday, after reading the reviews decided to come to the old smiddy and so glad we did, received a lovely warm welcome. We ordered our food and again not disappointed, all home cooked and fresh. During our meal a coach party was in the other lounge and we could here the stories listen to the singing and even live bagpipes being beautifully played by a young boy. Could not rate the old smiddy inn highly enough, a must for anyone visiting the area.

We stopped here with our Insight group and all in our group had a great time. It is in an old blacksmith shop with some of the original tools hanging on the walls. The gentleman who plays and sings the piano was full of history and even sang a song in the old Gaelic language which was beautiful. He had a young female bagpiper play us several songs which is very rare to find as there are not many females that play the bagpipes. He got everyone involved with the singing which made for a very fun afternoon. We did not eat, but the beer was good and cold. If you are looking for something different and more intimate then be sure to stop at this cozy place.

We wanted to pop in for a quick drink on our way home when staying in the area on holiday. The lady behind the bar started to pour our drinks as a man came in and, without introducing himself, suddenly told us we weren’t allowed in here with our dog. When I asked if this was the policy of the pub he simply said we’d be ‘thrown out’. I was so shocked that I turned around to leave, only to be told I’d have to pay for the drinks we weren’t able to stay and have! The lady behind the bar looked almost as uncomfortable as we felt, but did or said nothing to help or even apologise. I’ll obviously never be back but wanted to offer a heads up to anyone else visiting, don’t bother if you have a dog with you! The place was also rather run down and smelt odd, so not somewhere I’d recommend anyway. Disappointing considering all the good reviews I’d read here beforehand.

Our Globus tour guide and driver were SO EXCITED to take us to Thrumster and this inn, located in a century-old "smiddy," or blacksmith's shop. The object was not the food - nor even the drink - but the person of Ray Bremner who hosted the ceilidh. This gifted gentleman sang, told stories, introduced us to local (an eight-year-old newbie on the chanter/bagpipes and her ten-year-old brother with similar talent and two more years of experience!) talent, and kept us mesmerized for two hours. But most of all, he touched our hearts, minds and our very souls with his plea and remedy for the resurgence of the Scottish culture in and through our children.

The premises are a very traditional pub with a public bar and a separate lounge/eating room. Both rooms have open fires which make the premises feel cosy, and luckily warm, as it was wet and cold the night that we visited. The pub certainly has character but is slightly run down and could do with a bit of modernisation in certain areas. The eating area is fairly small, it can probably only cater for about 20 people so best to book in advance. The menu choice is fairly limited - about 4 starters, 6 main courses and 3 desserts. We had the roast dinner, which was beef and also the steak pie. Both were served with a few boiled potatoes, swede, cauliflower & carrots. We were both impressed with the meat side of the meal but we were both disappointed with the quality and small quantity of the vegetables. For dessert, we both had the strawberry trifle, which again we were slightly disappointed with. After all the good reviews that we’d read we were left feeling a bit disappointed with the food. However, the pub was clean and the staff were friendly and helpful.
