Food was on point as always, had a fish and chips. Hot crispy chips, crispy tasty batter. Staff were friendly and helpful.

This spot was amazing for food and drinks all around. The staff were great and so was the atmosphere i'd definitely recommend!!!👌

Lovely lunch today, pizzas are great and very well priced! Kids meals were well sized and there is even a little outdoor play area.

Came for Sunday lunch and something for the kids to do. Lovely Sunday roast. Staff and friendly and very helpful. The playarea is a nice touch and keeps the kids entertained while friends catch up. Nice selection of draft aswell, always a bonus!

We visited this pub recently and was amazed the staff are brilliant so welcoming and go above and beyond. Kids had a fab time in the garden aswell.

Had the experience of meeting with the family as younger ones birthday. I thought the level of cleanliness was poor. Looks like the toilets have not had a good clean in an age. Ordered food and got order wrong then some of the food came out but some did not the kids chicken arrived but the cops took another 15 mins before they arrived. Staff did not really have a clue and looked as if did not care. Nobody seem to managing the pub just a free for all on service and attention.

I unfortunately had to change our gender reveal location last minute due to the numbers, the manager here was more than happy to accommodate, and they all went above and beyond to ensure the afternoon ran smoothly for us! Me and my friends had a lovely afternoon celebrating my birthday at the shepherd. The food was hot & fresh and didn’t take too long to arrive. We called into this pub after hearing some good reviews, so I decided to take the family out for a meal 4 adults and 2 children, along with my parents who dad can be extremely critical at times , but I have to say the atmosphere was amazing it was clean and tidy from the extremely well designed children’s play area in the garden to the toilets. We ordered our food from a very helpful and knowledgeable lady called Charlotte she made sure we was looked after and even served the food to our table.it was if nothing was to much trouble from this lady, who we all commented on never stopped from serving food to pulling pints to wiping down tables Charlotte does go the extra mile a true asset to the pub and the brewery,The bar staff are friendly and well presented . We will definitely be back cracking little pub, but don’t take my word for it visit yourselves I can only give my honest review. Wayne

So I've spent quite a few summer afternoons at the Shepherd this summer and the food is very good. However last night I tried the pizza. Just a bit of background info, I worked in the cruise industry for almost 10 years and have eaten a LOT of pizza in Italy!!!! I don't particularly care for pizza elsewhere but last night's pizza was probably the best I've eaten outside of Italy. If you want a thin crisp hand stretched base this is for you!

Travelled down from Norfolk to meet family. Rubbish food Was getting stared at because we complained...shouldn't try to make customers feel uncomfortable. Sent burnt cold food back and same burnt cold food came back out. Waste of money! Never again

We were just passing and saw the sign for Sunday Roast. Opted to go "large*which offered extra meat and extra Yorkshire pudding. Also ordered extra veg Our meals arrived,,,,, 3 thin slices of beef, one yorkie served in a soup bowl of gravy. Carrots and peas served separately on a cold plate. No extra veg and no extra meat or yorkie. Raised a concern with waiter and waited several mins before he arrived with extra veg but no extra meat or yorkie. Raised a further concern and this was dealt with by a waitress who was understanding. Beef resembled boil in the bag type and poor quality. We received complimentary drinks and desserts which were gratefully accepted and our concerns were dealt with in a professional manner. The environment was clean and friendly. Shame that the food let's this establishment down.

Old fat used to heat chips . Food was luke warm and presented like a dogs dinner. Could still taste the rancid fat hours later. My wife had already started hers otherwise I would have got our money back.

Unexpected visit to this gem of a pub!! The lady behind the bar was brilliant can't say enough about her( landlady?) she was great with the kids and interactive, it was Halloween so there was alot of screaming ( mostly outside) in the great and we'll managed garden and safe play area! All the staff didn't seem to mind atall in fact they were laughing.I haven't felt this welcomed into a pub since way before covid, The food was good, they had a live band! I have around 4 pubs closer to me than the shepherd but I stopped going ( so did half the community) because the land lords/lady's seemed to have lost all manners and the welcome mat recently!So it was refreshing to actually feel welcomed rather than having attitude and to see our kids playing with other kids just felt fantastic.. Highly recommend this place!!

Lovely drink in great surroundings served by the most stunningly beautiful barmaid I have ever seen!

I have just finished dinning at the old Shepard. Terrible service. ordered to the table on the app at 6.20 to have our order cancelled then ordered at the bar at 6.30 to have our food arrive at 7.50!! And hour and 20 mins later and it was even busy inside the pub everyone having the same complaint when 45 mins had passed ask the helpful bartender how long to food would be and he said 10 mins.. but was at least another 30. Waiter was rude and slow and didn’t communicate with people waiting for their food or even apologise for our wait. Not even offered a drink for the extremely long wait. Young lad on the bar working hard to serve drinks and picking up the slack for waiter finding out how long our food would be. When I asked waiter where condiments where he just pointed over the pub and grunted ‍♀️ Oh I almost forgot we moved inside as it was getting late and to cold to eat outside informed the bar This was at the 30 mins mark after ordering. The waiter still took the food outside and I chased after him as I realised what was happening and to stop him giving the food to people sat outside not even at the table we were originally on after they admitted it wasn’t theirs but they would have it. Worst part if the food was actually all right, just the wait time and service was terrible

Great food and service today for a big family gathering. Food arrived on time well presented and every single guest enjoyed the food. Pub was clean and tidy and special thanks to the staff for the smooth running and friendly service.

We visited the pub on monday lunch time, we hadn't booked a table, but the server Sean explained the covid regs, track and trace and escorted us to a table of our choice. we ordered drinks which came quickly and then ordered our meals. Sean looked to be the only visable member of staff, serving drinks, taking orders, delivering meals ect.... The food was good, I asked for more drinks which again were delivered very quickly. For a young person "sean's" customer service skills are excellent, polite, friendly, with a nothing is too much trouble attitude.

Food was fine when it arrived but the service was awful. Order 4 meals and a shared starter. Starter arrived with the main meals but they had put the wrong meal through the till (written on paper then entered in till after) for my daughter. They finally cooked the correct meal but was wrong to have a child waiting for food while the adults had meals (she ate the starter on her own while she waited). I expected an apology but they didn't bother. Not impressed with the service so won't be going back again.

Visited today . Tried to order via the app that didn't work.Tried to get the attention of 2 different members of staff, finally got acknowledged and told they would be with us. Sat there for 15 more minutes whilst we were ignored , drinks were taken to other tables, orders were taken from other tables, no acknowledgement of us at all , even just a glance or quickly saying they would be with us as they passed and we tried to get their attention againPerhaps our faces didn't fit, perhaps their regulars were more important but definitely felt like we were ignored.until we gave up and left Luckily there are enough pubs in the area so we don't need to return

Absolute appalling behaviour and service from staff here!! Looking at the reviews I'm not the first who has been met by this, Martons need to review this. Best thing about this place is its close to the Wallace which I'd advise going instead of here

We visited on Monday 24th August . We booked a table for 4 at 6pm . We arrived at 545pm and was told we would have to wait outside as we were early, so we sat at one of the tables in the garden , which obviously had not been cleaned after the last people had left, aa there was salt and food waste on the table. So makes me wonder about the hygiene of the pub. We ordered our food, and two meals came out and two did not. We asked on 3 or 4 occasions about it , but when it finally came out the first 2 meals had been finished , so we were unable to eat as a family. The food was good, but the service and cleanliness was not. We also had to ask for condiments as we were not asked if we wanted any.I have had issues here before with service , but thought would give it another try , but nothing has changed.We were not asked if our meals were ok and we were not thanked for our custom when we left even though the manager walked past us as we we leaving , with no hint if an acknowledgement. Think will give this place a wide bearth in future , plenty of other eateries to go to, and looking at previous reviews it seems as if i am not the only one . This is defo a managenent issue, which he seems unwilling to resolve. A manager should be looking after his customers, but unfortunatly seems very disinterested.

Me and my family went to the shepherd today and the food was awful! I mean I’ve never had such a shocking meal in all my life, dry food, stale bread and it tasted awful, I will never be returning, the high chairs had food all over them, the cutlery was dirty & the toilets were dirty.

Friendly staff and two great tasting pizzas on a Tuesday for £10. Will be back to try out the other offers.

We often eat at the Shepherd and always feel we get value for money. However, today, Valentine’s Day, having both been working, we felt a treat on fish Friday would finish off the week nicely. So disappointed, the small piece of fish was overcooked in the batter so that it didn’t really exist. The tiny flakes of fish were chewy and the batter was inedible. The atmosphere was good and service was quick, but the food sadly let this usually great eatery down.

Me and my young children were horrified to overhear a seemingly one sided and heated argument between between members of staff while attempting to enjoy a family meal. I was appalled at some of the language I witnessed being and I hope Marstons are aware of the type of people representing their company!

Excellent Sunday Roast, excellent service and even better value for money! Highly recommend! Lovely atmosphere.

I came her with my aunt for our regular catch up and it was nice to see a decor change gone are the colourful sheep on the walls replaced by images of mandrill apes? Strange choice. The daily specials are still on the menu and the 2 or 3 course cheap deals are back. Pub the same and the lunchtime food was speedy and enjoyable.

Meal was good as allways it seems the management have decided to take strongbow off the menu and replace it with Thatchers which tastes like popWill be looking to find a pub that serves strongbow. Will check back in a month or so to see if they have changed their minds.

Just visited the Old Sheppard to see what is like after refurb. Wont be back food was okay but waitress attitude terrible. Apparently the customer is always wrong if the till receipt says so. Kitchen receipt ticket waived in my face and then walked off. Then had to chase her around to get some mustard as we weren't offered any. She is not likely to get many tips with that attitude.

My girlfriend and I decided to pop in on the off chance for lunch. We wasn’t disappointed. The beef dinner was amazing. The beef melted in your mouth, gravy tasted homemade the whole dinner was great. We will definitely be coming back.

We came to this pub as a family looked nice from outside inside was nice the staff however wow there was 1 barmaid in particular called Charlotte the attitude on that woman is disgusting she got my drinks order wrong when I told her she got so angry and the mouth on her I dont know what the management think of their staff calling a customer thick but this woman had no problem in calling me thick I am appalled and will be going through the brewery we also went outside and there was young lads clearly on drugs as they were passing it around outside I am disgusted

The dirtiest pub I have ever visited, cleaner should be sacked. Over flowing bins at the entrance, the most unhygienic toilets I have visited, manager not interested. What a shame as it use to be such a lovely place to go, but environmental health need to visit

After growing up in the area we knew what this place as like but as we’d heard it had new management thought we’d give it a try ! Well food is poor. Barmaids are cringe common ! And as it was early evening time you had a lot of um ... people going toilet every 10 mins . So still the Same old drug hole it’s always been !

We recently had a curry here. Both of us had separate dishes which looked very similar, even though one was tikka masala and the other a chicken jalfrezi..

Needed a change from hotel food and saw this pub one day and thought we would try it. The choice of food was very good and the cost was very reasonable. We had a little wait for the food no more than anywhere else but it was piping hot when it came and very tasty. Went again the second night because we enjoyed it so much and chose a different meal and yet again it did not disappoint. Drinks were very reasonable and the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Came here today with friends for what we thought would be a nice lunch. Well that didn’t happen, wrong food came out uncooked garlic bread and a very rude blonde girl who I must say doesn’t have any customer service at all and thinks it’s okay to speak to customers like utter crap.

14 of us went for food to celebrate my 58 th birthday and grandads 91st, all nephews nieces, in-laws get together. We were greeted with a smile and welcome, shown to the tables. We ordered together, food came out together within 25 mins. Excellent service. Piping hot food of a high quality and presentation. Staff checked we had all we needed and checked after 10 mins to see if the food was all ok. Very good prices , very good value. We weren’t rushed to move on, we were thanked for our custom.

This has become our standard catch up pub so when I had met my aunt we came here and had the fish deal. Lovely big piece of fish and extremely friendly staff, i hadn’t been happy with the menu last time because of the changes but it isn’t that bad once you get used to it.

Bar staff are great and professional, but the wait on food is too long. Food was really nice and the layout of pub is amazing.

Where do I start? We arrived at 12pm and ordered promptly, probably by about 12:15 at the latest, starters were pretty quick to arrive, food was not of great quality but edible. Our empty plates sat in front if us for some time, we had already ordered our main courses. Once plates were collected we waited approximately 45 mins and still no main courses, several tables who had arrived after us were all being served but nobody came near our table. Eventually I asked the manager who went in to the kitchen, still a good wait time passed before our meals actually arrived. When they did arrive food again was not great quality. But we are it. Once again empty plates sat in front of us for some time. We had ordered desserts and then had another 45 minute wait whilst customers who again ordered after us were served before us and yet again we had to ask at the bar, one of our party actually had to leave for work due to the totally unreasonable delay. We had no apologies or explanation for the wait times, staff seemed completely dazed, wandering about looking for table numbers like they didn't know where they were going, even the management seemed confused. This is the second bad experience I have had now, I gave them the benefit of the doubt after the first one but needless to say I will not be doing that again, this is a great place for drinks but definitely will not be eating here again.

Another good meal at the Shepherd last saturday lunchtime. Pub wasn't too busy so food came out pretty quickly. Served hot by a friendly member of staff. Served by Claire, also very friendly, infact, all the staff there are good.

The food was reasonably priced and not bad. As a family with teens we had a good meal for the price we paid. Staff was friendly.

Haven't been to this pub for a few years but really enjoyed our time there. Went for a meal about 5pm time & found the place clean & welcoming. Had the Chicken & Bacon Salad which was excellent. Staff were very helpful & service was quick & good. Shall visit again quicker.

Came here for my usual meet up with my aunt, but was not Impressed with the new lunchtime menu. The previous one had more interesting items along with a starter, but has gone to toasties, sandwiches and jackets. Unimpressive. Have no issues with the staff or pub in general just change the menu back.

Over an hours wait for food.When the prawn cocktail come the lettuce was all brown and off,there was 6 prawns in it,definitely not worth the £3+

Went the shepherd for a drink on Thursday as the weather was nice, did not stay long as I did not enjoy the atmosphere outside and rude people sadly not the pubs fault just rude people about won’t be going back

Popped in for saturday lunch. Chose Tomato & Basil soup, very nice, Cauli cheese Tart with chips & peas, tasty, & a glass of rose wine. Good staff, hard working, cheerful.

I meet up with my auntie for lunch every now and again for a catch up and she lives equidistant from The Shepard and The Wallace but we decided to see how the refurb and changed this place. Colours are a bit *UKIP" but that's the problem with choosing purple. Inside has been done out nicely with booths along the wall for a bit of privacy.

Visited here with 10 members of my family. Stayed for several hours drinking and never were the empty glasses collected or tables cleaned, we had to take glasses back ourselves. Toilets were filthy. Very understaffed at bar, waiting to be served. Beer was good but still won’t be drinking there again.

Bien, el lugar es un pub formost. Huele como uno. Habiendo dicho que la comida os a un precio razonable, nada del otro mundo, pero está bien si no quieres cocinar en casa.

Ordered 2 meals and was told 5/10 minutes. We waited 30. When the meals arrived they had fries. We ordered chips.They didn't have any chips. What food we had was ok but not fantastic. We will stick to the Holyhead. Much better

Stopped for a few beers in the sunshine. First beer ok. Second was off and there were no alternative pump ales available at the time. Resorted to Newcastle Brown ale in the bottle. Teenage kids joined us later for dinner. Place was not busy but all starters were overcooked as were some of the meats on 2 mains. Lets be honest the sort of food on offer is not gourmet and should be relatively easy for trained cooks. Asked how many were working in the kitchen. 1 was the answer. Beer is usually good here but it is more and more difficult to find large chain pubs that keep a good cellar and this place is usually better than some others in the area. Hence the 3 rating. Won't bother eating here again but will still drop in in the evening for a beer.
