Lovely room, very clean.think there should be a set price for room only and a set price for bed and breakfast as breakfast is served at 830 am only so if you have come for a rest and you don't want to get up you still would end up paying for it.had a issue with the cost prior to our stay because of recent price increase so our breakfast wasn't included anyway. Because of this found the owner not very welcome towards us. Still had a nice break away.

We have been coming to knaresborough for a number of years now and always pop in a couple of times during our stay to The Old Royal Oak. What we love most is the friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere, the owners are both wonderful friendly people who clearly work very hard. The ladies toilets are spotless, as is the rest of the place and it’s always lovely and warm inside, much appreciated when you’ve been out in the cold! You also get a friendly welcome Woof 🐶 from the family pet, he’s just a sweetheart! Prices very competitive and all round a fantastic place to come for a pint or two. We have yet to eat here but the food looks and smells amazing, so we will definitely be eating here next time we visit! This is a traditional old fashioned pub, just the way it should be!

Great local pub smack in the middle of Knaresborough! Fun regulars with daft karaoke, entertaining bands and a great team behind the bar. We love the range of pubs in Knaresborough, with modern bars, super traditional pubs, trendy places, sports bars and lively locals, and whenever we visit we always go to the Old Royal Oak as it usually has something going on, and if not the beer garden is a nice place to have a relaxing pint in! The manager in particular is a legend, I've been returning ever since she gave me a Kit Kat chunky on a birthday night out, an act I'll never forget!

We've been staying at the Old Royal Oak for a Saturday night every January now for I think five years now, sometimes in the summer. We keep coming back as hardworking Rob and Sharon are very welcoming. The pub and our rooms are excellent as always. They usually provide a nice breakfast. Last Saturday though Rob said unfortunately the kitchen is out of use and been refurbished which is good for hygiene and reliability of the service. They've been living on takeaways while the work has been going on. Rob told us about the situation when arrived and we were totally fine about it, and paid a bit less because of that. We were happy to book with them again.

Stayed here for two nights for work. When booking the room on their website, it clearly stated "with breakfast". When I got to the hotel/pub I was informed there was no breakfast due to kitchen cleaning. When I stated that I had paid for breakfast, I was met with a blank, unapologetic expression just re-iterating that it was closed in a manner that I had made a mistake.. The following day, this patern of there mistake being my problem continued, with the statement that I had paid a reduced rate for the room and that's how it is. Once again I iterated that this was their mistake, and due to having to be at a customers early, I only pick hotels with breakfast. As such, it was not the cost that bothered me but the inconvenience although technically acording to there website i had paid for breakfast which they just seemed to ignore. That being said, they are still on the expensive side for a below average basic room with a tiny tv weak electric shower (with leaking surround) and terrible parking. The only slightly redeeming feature was how loyal the staff was to the owner, but unfortunately, this had the side effect of them being unprofessional towards me with only the second member of staff accepting my perspective after producing my receipt. I base my review on staying in hotels everywhere up and down the country, sometimes three different ones in a week, and all in all, I found this to be a poor experience.

The bar staff are genuinely thoughtful and considerate. The chap who served me was amused when I noticed that two of the beer pump clips had been crossed over with one another, which was quickly and easily sorted out. Having stayed in the Lake District we hadn’t really seen anyone as we just went for walks and peace during this difficult time that said we wasn’t given the warmest of welcomes by the landlord he did make comments about travelling during this time. That said the room was lovely and with loads of room. It was very clean. We felt very safe as there was cctv on the car park which my husband was well impressed with as we could see our car on the tv. We had a nice stay. I thought I would support a small business rather than a named hotel. There was no breakfast at this time which we completely understood we found a lovely cafe which was a short walk called Scott’s cafe would recommend.

The landlord announced I'm not serving f ing tourists, I'm serving the locals, he left a young girl struggling, when he was questioned about his language and awful attitude, refusal to serve or speak to us he said we hate tourists we wish they would f off, he actually used the full profanity, but it wont allow me to type that please be aware, well we did, we left for Leeds and spent our cash there instead and will never return to knaresborough. If that's how he thanks paying customers who are enhancing the trade for them, I've contacted the tourist board, the brewery and a local rag too. He is damaging the opinion folk will have on the town and doing all his other trades people a massive disservice, he needs removing from his position, we were horrified, grandparents, mums, colleagues a CID officer and family all who would've normally gone back and promoted the place unfortunatley he soureded our day and visit, knaresborough is beautiful it does not need him doing this to its reputation and dies, like all towns rely on tourists cash and foot fall. Swearing at adults for no reason at all, we honestly could not believe him. Where , who does he think he is. Please read and do not go in his establishment. Let him struggle with no visitors

Felt compelled to write a review after visiting with a group of friends on Sunday evening. From the moment we stepped in, the attitude from the staff behind the bar was intimidating and aggressive. My friend sweetly tried to pet the dog and one of the staff said ‘ well he dunt like her, he dunt like her at all. We immediately regretted giving them our business but we decided to ignore it and enjoy being amongst friends, not possible. My lovely friend started to playfully drum on one of their padded bar stools was accosted by the landlady who grabbed the still from her, slapped her and shouted ‘ Off!’ She then proceeded to aggressively intimidate her from behind the bar, clearly trying to start a fight and made my friend cry. My friend had been smiling at her and trying to say she wasn’t trying to cause any trouble, something everyone who knows her and was present can vouch for.

The beer garden is a nice area and the pub is in the flatest and busiest part of town and do cater for peole with disabilities The couple that run the pub are really nice and friendly. This pub has recently changed hands so when we visited in July 2016 they were not serving food, apart from breakfast. The bedroom in the converted stable block was fine, clean, comfortable and the breakfast was quite good. The couple running it are trying hard although obviously it was early days. I'd have given them top marks for effort, however......after our three day stay, I got home to find I'd left a couple of important items in the room. I phoned and asked if they would post them on to me if I paid the postage; this was agreed; I confirmed my address and waited several days but no delivery. I phoned again; Oh, they were very busy but would definitely post them. Waited another week, phoned again, got someone else who again promised they would definitely be posted. Waited another week. Decided to send a cheque to cover postage to see if that would help but alas, two weeks later there is still no sign of the missing items. If they'd said right off that they couldn't commit to do it, it wouldn't have been so bad but really this has put me off recommending them. Maybe if they read this review it will help?

As we did a 180 and strolled right back out I noticed one, very old, lady perched on a seat. I admired her loyalty but we couldn't get out quick enough.

Looked forward to staying at the Royal Oak after having seen it on TV and read reviews, particularly on food. However, we were very disappointed as at the time of our visit the kitchen was closed the first night, and the second night the menu was so limited we ended up with burger and chips (which was very good) but not what we really wanted, every meal we chose was unavailable. Accommodation was good and staff very very friendly, loved the lady who cleaned our room and Cathy(!) who cooked a great breakfast. Unfortunately, the pub was undergoing renovation at the time so it was quite noisy of a morning, but thats to be expected. Did not meet with the owner at any time. Nevertheless, intend to return with friends for another weekend but would inquire about the kitchen beforehand.

Stayed at the Old Royal Oak for two nights as part of a motorcycling road trip. Parking safely and securely was high on the list of our needs and we werent disappointed, dedicated parking in a safe area. The hosts were welcoming on arrival and were friendly throughout our entire stay, offering much advice on local places of interest. Very happy with the quality of accommodation. The room was separate from the pub, which meant no pub noise could be heard at night from the pub. Breakfast very good, a good plate of English breakfast.

We stayed here for 1 night and the room itself was very clean and comfortable. The staff were very pleasant and the breakfast was one of the best. This is because for once the sausages and bacon were better quality and everything was cooked just right. The hotel/pub is in a great location for the local shops and Castle. The only small gripe was there were limited parking spaces that were in a very tight space, but there is a car park right near which wasn't expensive.

I visited Knaresborough with some elderly friends, and we decided to have a meal here as it had been recommended. From the time we sat down to the time we left, we were made to feel unwelcome. The staff were unhelpful and surly to the point of rudeness, particularly when I enquired after 1 hour of waiting for our meals. When I tried to point out that one of our party is an insulin dependant diabetic, I was greeted with a shrug of the shoulders. I was then told by the male member of staff that if we wanted fast food, "there's a McDonalds around the corner!" Absolutely appalling, and two of our number were so upset they couldn't finish their meals. I will never go here again.

Stayed here several years while delivering cheese to Yorkshire Show. Past 2 years had music in the beer garden on Sunday afternoon. Great atmosphere. Thanks again Mark and Jean and "Sounds like us". Knaresborough certainly pulled all the stops out for Tour de France.

Old fashioned pub with one of the best Sunday lunches I have tasted. Beef or lamb and home cooked vegetables served in proper dishes. Not a great fan of Yorkshire puddings, but these were lovely a light. Can't fault it.

As per my review of the Riverside Cafe, there are a lack of great eating places in Knaresborough and so this probably accounts for why so many people are dishing out four and five stars for what would be classed as standard venues in any other destination. We headed here for Sunday lunch after going for a huge walk along the River Nidd. The place is a standard pub that was a little shabby on the inside. After asking what the vegetarian choice would be for my partner the barmaid had to go away to ask and see what the chef could rustle up (slightly strange for anyone who visits here who may be a vegetarian also). I chose the beef that was nice and came with a huge dish of vegetables for us both to share. It was a standard meal to be expected from any pub and was not great by any means. It hit the spot and filled a hole, but I would not be rushing back to such a place as it is simply okay. At £7.95 for a meat main and £5.95 for the vegetarian main the value was okay. Would I come back here, probably not.....

Called in for a last minute lunch with my mum & friend both elderly. The lady serving was very busy & a delivery driver was hopping around to be served as well! Poor lady but she never got flustered & seemed to serve my coffees, take our lunch order ,serve 2 men draught pints & sort the delivery out all at the same time. An impressive start. We ordered sandwiches& chips. Wonderful home cooked, the hot beef baguette had more home cooked tasty beef than some Sunday roasts I've been served in some restaurants. The chips are home made & plants of everything. Great service, great simple cooked food & I would recommend. While we were there a couple came in to check into a room & came down shortly afterwards & we heard them say they were delighted with the room. We will return, it was a pleasure to visit.

Called in with my wife, yesterday on spec, we had a fantastic Steak & Kidney Pudding. Absolutely cracking! could not eat all the home made chips because the pudding was so big, not only in size but taste. My wife had mince and onion suet pie, again Fantastic. And all washed down with real ale. Atmosphere as great traditional English pub should be and all for less than £20. Don't miss it it you are hungry or thirsty for good tastes.

Having read the previous reviews we really wondered if we were in the right place. We were very disappointed in the quality of the service and standard of food. There was a catalogue of disappointments. The bar had no bottled water, sparking or still. The coffee machine had broken down. The barman didn't know what soup was on offer and when it arrived it totally lacked flavour and any evidence of salt. Our sandwiches and salad turned out to be a roll with a slice of ham, a discoloured piece of pineapple, a leaf of lettuce and slice of tomato. Overdone chips arrived five minutes before our soup and sandwiches. The toilets too could have been a lot cleaner. Altogether our visit certainly didn't live up to expectation based on previous reviews

My family and I visited the Old Royal Oak for lunch on Saturday. We were made to feel very welcome by the very bubbly and friendly barmaid. Wide choice of meals on the menu and specials board. Our order was quickly served - portions were large, good honest food (real chips!!) and very good value for money. On down side - room was not very well lit and decor a bit gloomy. Disappointed that could not have a bar tab and apparently do not serve children's meals!! Why?!? However, still worth a visit.

We had eaten here last year (Sunday lunch) which was very good. Called again on Saturday afternoon the pub was busy but managed to find a table. The menu is traditional pub grub with half a dozen specials on the blackboard, I went for the giant Yorkshire with roast beef and husband chose the fish pie both came with 3 veg and potatoes. The food was very tasty and hot, tried my best to finish my meal but I was beat (very big portions). We ordered tea for 2 and I have never seen a teapot as big! Think we could have got 7cups each out of it.The staff are very friendly and efficient.

The Royal Oak offers traditional pub food at a reasonable price and a warm friendly welcome from efficient staff who serve you with a genuine smile and in a cheerful manner. Four of us had lunch, two had good quality sirloin steaks, one battered haddock and I had roast beef. The beef was tasty and tender and plenty of it. The chips, mashed potato, roast potatoes, and vegetables were typical pub food and presented nicely. My friend remarked on the condition of the beer saying it was a really nice pint and the house wine from the pump was very drinkable and reasonably priced. If you are looking for a hearty meal and good value then this is the place to go.

This was a good decision we made to try the pub for our first meal out in our week in Knaresborough it was excellent! Roast lamb and Turkey lunches appeared with a dish of vegetables, real ones not frozen, real roast and boiled potatoes and two Yorkshire puds each. We really didn't think we could eat it all but we did and delicious it was too plus piping hot. Well done to you all thanks.

Our party of five found the menu to suit all of our tastes. The chicken Kiev was really tasty and I'm told the beef hot sandwich, mince and onion pie and omelet were also very good. The only not perfect thing was our chips/fries were a bit overdone. The service was exceptional- very friendly and accommodating when the oldest member of our party wanted a two egg omelet rather than the three egg omelet on menu. As a dog lover it was nice to see that they allowed dogs with their humans to come in out of the rain!
