Nice looking pub, ok food but no customer service from the guy at the bar who served our drinks and brought out our food - rude in his manner, no explaination as to which drinks we had order - they looked the same, sat waiting for cutley because we wasnt aware we had to collect our own or where to collect it from - its just the finer points in customer service that make the experience different and should be taught as standard.

We have just had an excellent family meal at the Old Red Lion in Grenoside. David the owner was attentive, friendly and polite. All the meals served were well cooked and good value for money. Would highly recommend the salt and pepper cod. We will definitely be revisiting in the next couple of weeks.

Ordered 2 steak meals to be cooked medium rare came medium well done ! Chips were under cooked ! This is where the problems started David stated he was the owner ! Changed meals still not right steaks were blue , and David was not happy to take criticism got very aggressive told would take the meals off our bill as he wasn’t trowing any more steaks at us !!! His words which I said were very rude , then proceeded to give us our bill , still drinking our drinks , asked if he wanted us to leave he said no ! Then why bring the bill , my opinion which I wasn’t entitled to have after all I’m just a customer wasn’t welcome and was perceived as we were looking for a free meal ! Which we didn’t eat , I’m sure I’d have chosen somewhere better than a pub , Iv never had this problem there before but then Iv never encountered David the owner tip to David leave front of house to your staff , and if as you you’ve been there 11 year and never encountered this before I’m going to say your not telling the truth , as a business owner I understand you can’t please everybody. ITS how you deal with it and David was aggressive and wouldn’t let me speak and was extremely confrontational Very disappointed

Went in a group for a celebration meal it was the quiz night as well so pub very busy . Only one lad on the bar so large queue for drinks . Should have had at least 2 on the bar . Menu says home made chips with all meals but they didn’t seem like home made tasteless not nice . How can a medium lenonade cost more than a pint of lager ? £3.50 for a medium lemonade is ridiculous. Food prices far too expensive for the standard they serve up . Would never go back .

Birthday Party of 12, Pub fairly busy on arrival but several free tables, that cleared soon after arriving, but only 3 waiting staff on, a middle aged lady and 2 younger females, it became obvious they were overwhelmed. We were booked in for 1.30 did a pre order, and had no starter - it took until past 14.00 to get our food and that was because we chased it up. It’s pub food, but non was great some said it wasn’t too bad, but one of the cod’s was too peppery, all the chips were very over cooked, mine was the worst meal, grilled salmon with greens and orange and tarragon sauce + a side order of veg, I didn’t get any greens, I didn’t get any Orange and Tarragon Sauce, the salmon was so dry and over cooked it wasn’t nice, and when I tried to cut into the end pieces it cracked and crumbled like a cracker, they provided peas and green beans, which I believe were frozen, and I can eat neither due to illness, the side of veg I ordered was another dish of green beans/carrots, the complete meal was disgusting. I requested a salad instead of the veg, and it came with no dressing or mayo/salad cream - I was told they do not do salad dressing by the older lady. Apparently someone had asked if meals were OK but shouted it from nearby so only the end 2 people on the table heard and their meals wasn’t too bad, no one else heard it. I called the older Lady over to tell her it was disgusting, who said if you had told me sooner I would have got you something else - no apology, no offer to take it off the bill - I was disgusted! After waiting for more service that didn’t come, we fetched our own desert menus, then had to go and find someone to take the order, deserts were limited to sponge and custard or ice cream, everything else sold out. When I did my pre order I asked if we should pre-order deserts too and was told no. 1 person had treacle Sponge and custard, 1 child had a dry treacle sponge, and one child had a bowl of custard, there was 1 cup of tea and 4 coffees as no one wanted what was on offer. The deserts took a while to come so we had to chase them up as people had to leave for other things. We were all sat for a pre-order of 13.30 and left at 16.40, in that time we had just one course and drinks with 3 deserts, all this time was spent waiting to be served and chasing things up. The bill was for £210.00, there was no offer to knock anything off the bill, normally I would have left a £20 tip but the service and attitude of the older lady was very bad. My plate was nothing like it said on the menu, false advertising, but once put down you were lucky to see staff again unless you chased them. We were in an area away from everyone else, and it made us easy to forget about. It was a shocking experience. It really isn’t difficult to cook a piece of salmon, I did eat it as it was the first I’d had to eat that day but I couldn’t eat anything else, that £2.50 (in Asda) piece of dried up salmon ended up costing me £22. I will not be returning in a hurry if at all.

Visited for lunch after seeing the new fish menu. Unfortunately the overall experience was very disappointing. And an expensive disappointment at that. Firstly, while my friend and I ordered separately we were told that the kitchen would be told to make sure the meals came at the same time. My fish arrived 10 minutes before my friend omelette. I’m sure most chefs should know that the when having pan fried seabass the skin should be crispy. This wasn’t. However the fish did taste nice. The potato’s that came with it were absolutely awful. I do not know what fat these potatoes were cooked in but they tasted and smelt awful. I could not eat them. The menu said ‘greens’ as to what the veg would be. It was frozen peas and boiled carrots. My friend said her omelette was nice. Will be reluctant to return.

This was a birthday meal with the family, which was marred by the poor standard of food. Some of us had starters, after the starters had finished, we had a wait of around 20 minutes for everyone to get their main meal, the meals arrived only to send back both of the liver and onion meals as the liver on both meals was undercooked and raw. Yes it was busy, but that's no excuse. The staff were understanding and apologised. However due to the long wait one of us decided not to wait a further 20 minutes for their meal so they didn't actually have anything to eat at all. Since the last visit the standard of food is not as before. Due to the amount of time waiting for our meals we all decided not to have desserts and left.

Not sure where to start by here goes.. After our friend booked a table earlier in the week, 7 of us arrived to be told they couldn't find our booking. After waiting around a while, they cobbled together a table for us in a corner. It took ages for someone to come and take our order, only to be told that they'd run out of chips! We were left waiting well over an hour for our food to come, with no staff checking in to see if we were ok. Finally food arrived, but they were so slow, some of us had nearly finished our meals when the rest came out, and at best it was mediocre. The salmon was priced at £20, which is the most expensive I've seen anywhere. It came with some fried new potatoes and a few boiled veg. Our burger came with no onion rings, and the prawn cocktail was shrimps. I will also tell you that if you are vegetarian and allergic to gluten, all that will be on offer to you is a plate of mash potato and boiled veg. Not only this, but if you ask the staff if you can have some more mash, you will basically have it thrown at you by a rude child, who has been screamed at by some other customer during the day who is nothing to do with you, but she thinks its alright to take it out on you. Not only that, the incompetent manager will then try to charge you for 2 extra meals that you didn't have, and then get annoyed with you for pointing it out. He will then add up the bill again and make the same mistake, and then get more annoyed with you because all he wants to do is get you out of there so they can shut the pub early and go home and watch the England match. I felt sorry for the rest of the staff as they were trying to do their best on a busy day, but if you are going to employ children, they need to be trained to be polite to customers in any situation. Although, if you have a 'manager' like the one on the day we came, then it's no surprise that the whole thing was a complete shambles.

We called in for Sunday Lunch because we knew it was dog friendly. The menu has a good choice. We had creamy mushrooms with garlic bread and deep fried halloumi. Both were delicious. Large chunks of halloumi with a nice side salad and chilli dip and the mushrooms were creamy and tasty. I had the beef Sunday Lunch which I couldn’t fault at all. Tender beef and lots of it. Roast and mash potatoes, peas, carrots and cabbage, stuffing and Yorkshire pudding. A good sized portion that I couldn’t finish. My partner had the veggie chilli and this was the only slight let down. The chilli portion was fairly small and if we hadn’t ordered starters would have left them a big hungry. However it’s a nice venue, very homely and the staff were excellent and so friendly.

Went in to look at booking a wake for a funeral that was in a few weeks, spoke to a lovely man called Dave, who sat us down, got cups of teas to talk through dates and price ranges of the different packages. Looking round the pub, it was very light and bright atmosphere, there was a baby shower going off in the bottom near the door of the pub, at the top people were having afternoon dinner. I was looking round and all the food looked really good, and spotted a few doggies. After discussing prices and date with Dave for the wake, we booked and left a deposit. Then we decided to stop and have dinner, we both ordered the roast beef with Yorkshire pudding(see pictures), it was lovely. The staff were brilliant and friendly and food came quick and hot. At the wake, staff were excellent and so accommodating, the buffet was already for us on our arrival, with quick service at the bar for the amount of people that came to celebrate at the wake which was about 50 people. Also with our package we got table chips which were amazing! Just would like to pass on my thanks to the staff for making an emotional day, very memorable! Thanks you!

I went with some friends for our Christmas lunch get together so we had the Christmas lunch at £18 a head, we arrived for our 12.30 booking took our seat I looked at the menu that was offered & I didn't like either of the 2 sandwich fillings offer turkey with cranberry & cheese with chutney so I spoke to the waiter that was serving us drinks told him this & asked if they could do me 2 alternative fillings, he went away & a minute later a man arrived at our table introducing himself as the duty manager & was there a problem I told him about my sandwich issue asking if I could have an alternative & I was rather took aback by his response of no so I asked if they didn't have anything else available to offer me & he said that wasn't the case he just couldn't change the sandwiches for me as they plates were already made up & if I had a special dietary requirement then I should have let them no to which I responded it wasn't a dietary request just what I thought wsx a simple change but apparently not so this definitely didn't leave our party with a very good opinion of this person's customer service skills so i just told him to leave it. Then to add to our dissatisfaction I realised after we had left that we also did not get the pigs in blankets that were part of the menu. All in all not the best experience I've had from this establishment.

Terrible from the very start. Person taking our order (who I believe was the manager) seemed like everything was a little too much hassle for him, no customer service. Ordered our starters which were the Yorkshire puddings-they were Aunt Bessie’s, frozen and tiny.l (to say they were charging top dollar for it). Mains, which was a roast, meat was dry, mashed potato was lumpy, 1 roast potato (?!!) and hardly any veg to say there was 6 of us. Dessert took 45 minutes to come out, they told us because they had printer problems? Yet all the staff could see we hadn’t been served for 45 minutes… they came back out to tell us 1 of the desserts were no longer available… everyone eventually got their order apart from one, who got served there’s after everyone else had finished and plates got taken away.. only after we complained they told us they give us 4 out of the 5 desserts for free… at that point you’d think they wouldn’t charge us for that… We had come to visit a few months prior and service was shocking but thought we’d give them the benefit of the doubt… won’t be going back!

Great meal and great service! The food was exceptional, best burger I have had in awhile, as good as any burger I have had back home in the States :). Well done Team!

We went to eat here today with my dog. The staff and manager made us feel so welcome. A lot of places will say that they are dog friendly and then only let you sit outside or in a stuffy corner but this place is NOT like that! They even made his food dog friendly. Food was so tasty and affordable. Lovely ambiance and service!

£6 for two halves of draught coke? Just appalling. You'd expect to be stung like this in a city centre if you were unfortunate. Nasty suprise in a village pub.

The “Top Red” is a great pub and our ‘go to’ when we are in Grenoside. It’s just on the edge of the woods so it’s location is great if you are walking, cycling or returning. There’s loads of space inside with cosy nooks which is ideal for a drink with friends or a meal. They cater for couples, groups and special occasions for big gatherings. The menu is varied and the food is great quality. Drinks are reasonably priced too. There’s always a great atmosphere and you’re always made welcome. Above all, the team are really skilled, efficient, attentive and go out of their way to give you great service. Definitely visit the Top Red if you’re going to be in the vicinity.

Second visit: We ordered a starter as a main, along with 2 burgers, and a portion of chips to go with the prawn cocktail. This was for three of three of us, and told the woman behind the bar that we wanted it all together, as one of us didn't want as much food, so wouldn't be having a main. The prawn cocktail arrived on it's own. Minor point, but we were asked if we wanted cutlery. I'd have been interested in seeing how we managed to tackle a prawn cocktail without that. Or the burgers that should have arrived. The prawn cocktail was eaten very slowly, as 2 of our party were missing food, and the chips intended for the prawn cocktail. After some time we had to say, you can bring out the burgers, we asked for them to be brought together. After 5 minutes we were told they would be a further 5 minutes. 10 minutes after that, they arrived. The food was fine, but still no chips for the prawn cocktail. The onion rings were missing from both burgers as well. After a while, the chips arrived, the manager said I have no idea why these are so late. We thought it was ridiculous, and decided to immediately take them back out of principle. The same woman behind the bar grinned from ear to ear in a very child like, patronising way and said that the manager would have to deal with it. He immediately said he was already taking it off the bill. Why not tell us that at the table. At this point we were just holding back the anger at the way we'd been treated, considering the cost and general expectations that people shouldn't be rude. We quickly finished what food arrived, and went to pay. Whilst paying the same woman is looking over smirking, finding pleasure in the way we had been treated, and how rude she was. The manager should have handled the situation much better, and she should not be in a public facing role. We left angry, not wanting to make a scene. We should have done. We previously recommended the pub to our family, who have now been informed not to go here, honestly disgusting. We will not be back. First visit: Food was a little mixed but easily fixed. Unfortunately there was way too much salt in the mash. And when it's one of the main components of a dish, it can slightly ruin a meal. (sausage and mash). We will likely return, just please take this constructively. Will adjust the review on the return, if all is fine.

It was wonderful to see the Ruddy Duck re-opening, albeit temporarily in the library - which was decorated beautifully for the evening. The 5-course tasting menu we enjoyed was exceptional, my particular highlights being the beef cooked two ways which came with a scrummy potato gratin and our dessert, a superb creation of rhubarb and ginger, showing off the best of local produce. The kale even came from the walled gardens at Wortley Hall! Our servers David and Brogan were both warm, friendly and knowledgeable about both the menu and the venue and we'll be delighted to dine here again. A week later and I'm still thinking about the homemade rhubarb cocktail that David created for me!

What a fantastic cafe, we had fantastic take out sandwiches and returned the next day for breakfast and also picked up some sandwiches for our train journey home. The team were amazing, so friendly and accommodating, we loved our visit and next time we are in Sheffield, we will be back t9 see you all. Thank you for being so kind and helpful to us!
