Food is average. The service on the other hand was dispicable. Asking a family to leave purely because there 2 year old son may make too much noise is not acceptable in my opinion. If this place doesn't welcome children they should state it when you book and not embarrass people in front of there family on the day. Extremely rude

Staying overnight in Chesterfield, we weren't sure where to go for an evening meal. Our usual eatery was fully booked and we didn't fancy a Thai/Indian etc.Tripadvisor to the rescue. At 7.00 we rang The Old Post House to see if they could fit us in, without too much hope as it was Saturday night. But, if we didn't mind waiting a bit, they could fit us in.Invited to sit near a glowing stove on a cold night, we had a welcoming trio with a surprise plate if warm canapés. Lovely. We ordered, and after 15 minutes or so we were shown to our table. The food was everything the previous reviewers have said. Superb. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for, and for a Mother's Day test, this hit the spot.Food - excellent.Service - excellent.Well done to Martin and his co-chef - just the two of them, working very hard to produce top class food. The front of house girls were excellent as well.We will return.

It was our first visit to Chesterfield and we found ourselves in a town we did not know on a Friday evening. We searched the town centre for somewhere nice to eat but no one could help us. Once again a warm welcome with attentive service even though the restaurant was full. I find that one of the most encouraging things even in a small place like this. Smiling faces and a kind tone to the voice make the start of the evening special.A good selection of aperitifs helps a well and in this case there is absolutely no problem. And the canapé were delicious as well...So to the meal itself. No complaints at all, not even minor ones. Well cooked and presented, piping hot and tasty all combined to make an excellent meal. All plates were clean and nothing left. The steak was, thank goodness for staff who listen, cooked to perfection and since this was a rare steak order it is not very often you get that. In most cases you get a medium rare...not so here, rare was ordered and rare we got. Scrumptious is the word. The wine was Ok but I do hate the modern fashion for screw tops...bring back cork!! Probably not the restaurants problem but it does give the impression of being a cheap wine which I know is not the case mostly. So all in all A1 +++++++. We look forward to our next visit. It was so nice to be in a place that although it was full that still gives first class service and the ambience is not destroyed by excessive noise. Excellent happy smiling service.

Hi I found this place on the word off a woman I meant near the market when asking for somewhere good to eat. I have stayed in Chesterfield many times recently and very sadly only discovered the Old Post last night. The woman even very kindly rang and let them know I was on my way. As a single female on business I like to get out of the hotels I stay in but can sometimes feel a bit awkward, not this place the lady who served me was just lovely and the food some of the best I have had in ages. Its a tiny place so booking would be essential I would guess at the weekends. I will certainly be back, evening also topped off with the chief singing High Fidelity from the Kids from Fame took me back years

Having patronised The Old Post for many years we always look forward to a meal there and have had for the most part, fine food and service. However, in the last year or so, the owners, including the Chef, have purchased another pub and de-camped to the new location. This means that The Old Post now has a new Chef, but has retained it's two main waitresses, Robyn and Jo.My partner, her sister and myself ate at the restaurant last Christmas Day and it was excellent, so we were expecting great things this year.We did eat here in the Spring of 2014, and we were slightly disappointed, but as there had been major changes we were willing to give it another chance.Subsequently, we have eaten at The Old Post a couple of times during the year and can confirm, it is back to it's best. So, to Christmas Day. We had to pre-order, which was not a problem and all three of us plumped for the Crab and Salmon. This was a lovely light starter after the complimentary Hors d'oeuvres, which are always an extra treat. My partner opted for the Beef and my partner's sister and myself both chose the Turkey. They were both really well cooked, and accompanied by nicely prepared seasonal vegetables. For dessert my partner had Christmas Pudding and her sister and myself had Lemon Tart. Both were excellent. All this was topped off with the Cheeseboard, Coffee and Mince Pies, all superb.it could be argued that there isn't much of an atmosphere at the restaurant as there is no music playing, but I think this is a good thing as you can sit and converse in a very civilised manner. All in all, we had a wonderful day, a lovely meal which was served by the two waitresses as previously mentioned, Robyn and Jo. These two deserve another mention as they are endlessly cheerful, pleasant, polite and are also up for a laugh, they deserve much credit. As does the new Chef, who has now stepped up to the mark and is delivering top quality food.I would recommend The Old Post to anyone as I believe it to be the best restaurant in Chesterfield, and I hope it goes from strength to strength, Congratulations, Ian.

My husband and I visited this restaurant last night, the food was amazing however I just have a comment to make on the service, we arrived at 7.30 and informed the staff we had a reservation, we were shown to our table, despite the restaurant not being particularly busy we were informed there was not enough menus so we had to wait, we asked about the set menu prices but was informed this was only available if you were seated by 6.30pm. So we ordered our food, as I say the food was lovely and could not find a fault, there was a bit of delay with starter arriving, and as soon as we had finished our starter our main was given, so this was a little rushed. when we asked for the bill, we received it, however written in ink on top was our name and 6.30pm. It then dawned on us that we had actually booked the table for 6.30 and not 7.30. Now this was totally our fault, I guess what I am a little bit confused about is why we were not asked about this on arrival, or clarified when we asked about the set menu, no this was written on the bill at the end. I felt this should have either been raised when we arrived and we could have apologised for the error, or not mentioned at all, I felt the note on bill was trying to make a point. This did somewhat take the shine off the evening.

We were a bit unsure since its been a while and the restaurant has cahnged hands since the last time....but we were pleasantly surprised I'm pleased to say. The snug reception is miles better than the old one and gives you time to settle (and dry out a bit in our case since it was tipping it down when we went). There was no rush and we perused the menu (which although small and compact compared to some gave a a good overall choice of dishes) whilst having an aperitif. We were well looked after from start to finish, the food was good and well cooked with just the right portion sizes and the wine list was Ok. Will we go back? We certainly will !!!

Visited the restaurant for our first wedding anniversary. The restaurant is tiny with only eight tables so was great for a quiet meal. We had 3 courses, all of which were delicious. The duck noodles were particularly good and came with a huge serving of duck meat. The Yorkshire pudding starter was an unusual treat. We were also very pleased with the price which was £22.50 for 3 courses on the summer menu - very good value for the quality you get. There was just 1 waitress but the timing of the meal was perfect, just the right amount of time between each course and didn't feel rushed at all. There were only 3 other couples in the restaurant so the service was very attentive and professional. Would recommend for a couple looking for somewhere quiet to eat a special meal.

Well worth a visit, we didn't know this place existed until we looked on TA. Crab & Smoked Salmon starter was exceptional and the Ham Hock Terrine was superb. My wife had the aged Beef which was like candyfloss in the mouth, I had the Cod Loin which was succulent and yet firm and meaty. The Sticky Toffee pud and the Treacle Tart were just as I expected, gooey, sticky and very mooorish. The service was attentive yet not intrusive and the restaurant seems to revel in its quaintness and I must say it makes a change from the new style of eatery with straight lines and polished edges. I have been eating at The Old Post for a few years now and have always found the good, service and atmosphere beyond excellent. I recently went with friends and was a little dissappointed with a few things, especially as it was the first visit for my friends and I had been telling them how wonderful it was!Firstly I have to say that the food was excellent and the waitress was lovely, friendly and efficient. We were sorry to see that the flowers on all the tables were dead, not just the odd petal but all the flowers on all the tables were limp and brown and the water had clearly been in the vases for sometime. We also found the choice of music rather strange, I love the likes of Kiss and Jason Donovan but not while I'm eating, something more relaxing would be nice! Finally we were looking at the desert menu and heard a male voice in the kitchen say to the waitress 'get them to hurry up and order, I want to go home' not really what you want to hear!I will probably go back again and give it another try as the food is so good, hopefully it was a one off!

We came one Saturday evening, staff very friendly, however when we sat at our tables, there was a haze of cooking smoke in the restaurant, we really wanted a window open for some ventilation, but due to the old building non of the windows would open, it did clear after about 30mins. The main course (beef) was beautiful, really tender, but my dessert was a let down, I chose an assortment of chocolate desserts, which I was told would be, white chocolate creme brûlée, chocolate fondant, chocolate torte. When the very small portions arrived they all had the same consistency, I believe that a chocolate fondant was like a rich sponge with a chocolate sauce melting in the middle, what I received was I can only describe as a slab of cold dark chocolate. I asked the waitress if it was correct to which I was told it was, (we have never heard of a chocolate fondant to be like a cold slab of chocolate) but she would let chef know that I found the dessert dissapointing. We never heard anything back from chef. As the starters and all the main courses and in deed the other 2 desserts were delicious I felt that the chocolate dessert let it down.

We ate here back in March 2014 and had what can only be described as one of the best meals I have had in years. The food was superb, faultless in fact, the service was excellent, attentive but not overpowering and the general ambiance was relaxed and friendly. However we returned on the 7th June for my mum's birthday and felt the entire evening was a let down. From the minute we arrived at 8.10 we for a 8.15 booking we were rushed. The waitress wanted our order immediately, the canopies arrived before we had sat down. The drinks arrived in the snug but without being able to enjoy them we were asked to move to the table. The starters arrived, no sooner had we finished the plates were wiped away and the main course appeared.I had ordered the Derbyshire lamb and was informed it would be served medium to rare ie pink, great I said just how I like it. When it arrived it was medium well done, not an once of pink meat to be seen and it looked and tasted dry as if it had been sat on the plate for the last 10 minutes. We asked if we could have a few minute before choosing our dessert, the younger of the two waitress and by far the least friendly one agreed reluctantly but then proceeded to hover in the kitchen door looking over at us.Under duress we ordered again and again the food appeared almost instantly. Now I appreciate that for many people this is an ideal meal, order and the food arrives immediately, however when you are paying in excess of £150 for a night out I do not want the evening to be over by 9.45pm which is exactly when it was finished. So we ordered coffee and remained for another hour much to the clear annoyance of the youngest waitress. The slightly older waitress I have to say was very friendly and professional at all times and this complaint is in no way directed at her.If I wanted fast food I would go to a Weatherspoons or Mc Donalds, if I want an enjoyable evening out in relaxed atmosphere I thought the Old Post would be ideal, sadly in this instance it was not.I will add that the rest of our party loved their food and although they agreed the evening had felt rushed the quality of the food and the choice on the menu outweighed the poor service which can easily be rectified with some training or supervision of the waitress.

We hadn't booked, but chanced our arm and were pleasantly surprised to find there had been a couple of cancellations. Really well looked after. Menu just right - too many dishes is normally a good sign that a restaurant hasn't quite perfected anything, but there was still a good choice of dishes. Both the lamb and the beef fillet were cooked to perfection. If I had one criticism, and it's minor really, the dishes arrived a little too quickly. Starters arrived within a couple of minutes of sitting down and had barely been cleared when the mains showed up. I guess with only a handful of tables, you're never going to be waiting too long, but you do need a breather between courses and time to savour the experience. Again, though, this didn't really spoil the evening. Terrific restaurant, nice people, sublime food.

I was looking for a fine dining restaurant for our wedding anniversary and was recommended this by several people I know. We were not disappointed! The standard of food and service is excellent. My wife had the scallops and I the Chicken Liver Parfait, both delicious. My wife is one of those who always tends to get the fatty piece of steak however, this she devoured with relish leaving nothing on the plate and my pork dish similarly well received. We finished off with desserts, coffee and port. Place is tiny and easily missed, but well worth keeping your eyes open for.The staff were friendly and relaxed, which is always a good thing for me.Food was tasty, flavours were well defined and combined together without crowding each other.I was given a lovely amuse bouche comprising duck served in the 3 ways. Always like a surprise course!Starter was scallops and chorizo with a butternut squash puree. Cooked perfectly Mains beef with bacon wrapped green beans, mushroom pepper corn and red wine sauce. Beef was cooked so perfectly I didn't actually need a steak knife to cut it.Pudding was white chocolate and blueberry cheesecake with a blueberry sorbet. The cheesecake was ok but the blueberry sorbet was out of this world.Rounded off meal with a coffee 3 courses, coffee and a pint of lager was £37. Which I feel was exceptionally good value. This restaurant is not fine dining, you aren't paying fine dining prices, the service isn't fine dining 'stuffy' and detached. The atmosphere here is very much more intimate and like going to the home of a serious food nut. I loved that and really hope that doesn't change. Too many places try to be suave and pretentious. The Old Post is neither of these things and is all the better for it. Make no mistake, the venue may be quirky and informal, but the food is absolutely first rate and well worth savouring. Old Post, please don't change a thing.

Just back from fantastic Sunday lunch here. Strange little old place in the midddle of a big junction, huge car park right ovr the road. All the staff are very attentive and helpful .We were given a nice little plate of tasters , then a home made bread roll. 4 of us had Sunday roast, one had liver, all the meals were very good. Lots of nicely cooked fresh veg. Puddings were all gorgeous .A brilliant little restaurant . Hope we can get there again.

Went here for Sunday lunch after reading the reviews on Trip Advisor. We needed somewhere central to meet other family members, chesterfield was just right. The Old Post came out a clear winner on ratings so we booked it.What a treat, the food and service was fantastic, most of our party had roast beef or pork, I went for the liver. Everyone thought it was superb. Desserts were a special treat, the treacle tart was amazing. Prices were good, and the staff very polite, friendly and happy.

Have just returned from a most fabulous Sunday lunch at Old Post in chesterfield. At £16.50 for 3 courses you can't go wrong. Beautiful little restaurant with just a few tables. The food was so delicious. Our waitress Lizzie was attentive and lovely. Without a doubt deservedly the best restaurant in Chesterfield. Will definitely visit again. Yum yum :-)))

Fantastic from start to finish. My partner and I went for Valentine's Day 2014. Great reception room with log fire and selection of wines, you're then led through to an intimate and exclusive dining room with views across the centre of Chesterfield. Food was top notch, no tackiness despite it being V's Day, and very reasonable portions for a restaurant of its quality. Price was about £90 for two but you can't put a price on culinary excellence. We opted for desserts even though we didn't really need to eat anymore, the food was just too damn good to say no. A privilege to enjoy and a sure contender for the good food guide.

My wife and I went to the Old Post a few weeks ago for my wife's birthday. All I can say is that why did I not know about this place before? It is superb. Small but well presented with excellent food. A real gastronomic treat. Go, you will not be disappointed.

The meal was okay, however, the service left a bad taste. I needed to ask three times for a jug of water. This was poor, considering there were only two other couples in the restaurant at the time. I asked for a Black Label whisky with my coffee, but as they didn't stock this brand, I was given a list to make another choice.....nobody returned to take my order. I won't be rushing back.

After a little stress with the SatNav and finding the place, we are so glad we came here! Booked this restaurant for my husband and I for my birthday after reading the reviews. The menu was varied and something to suit all tastes. Everything was reasonably priced with it all presented beautifully.

We were a family of 8 adults and 2 children looking for a place to meet up for a Sunday lunch. We found The Old Post on trip advisor, checked out the website and decided to book. We were all really impressed. The atmosphere is really nice and the decor pretty. The service was superb and the food was simply top class. I am always a bit anxious when eating out with a 10 and 7 year old but the restaurant was welcoming and we sat enjoying a pleasant meal for over 3 hours. I would highly recommend this place.

This is our first visit here . A very small and cosy restaurant with only seven tables. A warm welcome by front of house ,and a pre lunch drink by a very nice log burning stove .the building is very old and full of character . The table laid with clean white table clothes ,a couple of small holes in one corner ,but I will say this will be the only poor observation during the visit. A small plate of appetisers were presented on behalf of the chief . The starters were excellent scallops with black pudding, the mains roast beel and pork served with buttered vegetable. Avery good selection of wines at avery reasonable price and quite a full body. The staff were very attentive but never over bearing ,which adds to a very relaxed meal

We dined here yesterday as a special treat with some family members. This is a small, cosy restaurant offering excellent food, coupled with prompt and efficient service. The menu was varied, using some local foods and there were sufficient options available for non-meat eaters. All the food was beautifully cooked and in portion sizes which were well satisfying. The initial attraction of drinks by the wood burning stove, to "warm the cockles", was well appreciated on a cold night, as was the entire dining experience. Although a shade expensive, we all felt that this was a thoroughly delightful restaurant and one which we would certainly visit again.

The Old Post is not located in the most salubrious of locations; sitting as it does on a large roundabout on the edge of Chesterfield. Yet this has its advantages: It was easy to find and there was a large Pay and Display across the road (actually on the roundabout) which was free after 8.00pm. The only issue was getting back across the road with all the traffic. The restaurant itself is set in a beautiful old house and there was a lovely log-burner going in the reception. It is not a particularly large establishment, seating about fifteen, so I would imagine it is essential to book.We were never kept waiting, both before and throughout the meal. Service was excellent, which must be a tricky balance to keep in such a relatively confined space. The food was top-notch. Every course was beautifully presented and of the highest quality; cooked to perfection. I cannot commend the chef any more highly. The Old Post is definitely worth a visit if you are in the Chesterfield area and enjoy decent cuisine. It is well worth the fairly steep prices.

Very, very good quality 3 course Sunday lunch. One of the few fine dining places in Chesterfield and well deserving of it's no. 1 spot on tripadvisor.Everything we had was full of flavour and well presented. The beef was very well cooked, nice and pink and portion sizes were generous. Service was efficient and pleasant and I really can't find fault with the meal we had.If I was to be very picky I felt that the desert selection was a little too heavy and chocolate based. Would have liked a choice of something a little lighter such as a mouse or lemon tart, although saying that, there was a fruit tart special that had sold out. I was unable to finish my lemon and white chocolate posset which was delicious but just a little on the rich and sweet side after the two previous courses. The meal was not too expensive and we will be returning.

Lovely Sunday lunch. Everything very well cooked and very tasty. Good variety of wines. The ambience is that of visiting mum at the weekend and smelling the sunday roast. An appero in front of the wood burning stove just set the scene for a relaxing day with friends. Henry and Maureen agree!

As it was number one on trip advisor, thought we would try it. We tried to get in before christmas, but it was fully booked, normally a good sign with a restaurant. We went to celebrate my birthday, with another couple. I was not disappointed. It has a lovely warm, cosy, intimate atmosphere. The staff were attentive, without being overbearing. The food was delicious, with a good choice. A lovely night and somewhere we would definitely return to.

Have now eaten at this Restaurant twice and it hasn't failed to provide outstanding quality well cooked food. Would have had several of each course as there were so many things I liked. The bar area is very small but quaint and the log fire a very welcome addition on a cold night. Staff very friendly and helpful without being too obtrusive. Restaurant clean with a lovely atmosphere.

Just reflecting on a fantastic night at the Old Post with my family celebrating my mum's 70th birthday on the 30th December. This was a private booking so having this lovely restaurant to ourselves made it even more special. The owners happily put together an excellent menu and were very accommodating, happily making 'slight' changes to please the whole family. The food was of exceptional quality, presented to a very high standard by very attentive staff. This currently has to be the best restaurant in Chesterfield!Thank you to the owners, chef and staff

Just returned from a Christmas Eve dinner. Although the food was hot and very enjoyable we felt that it could have been improved. No sign of Christmas at all except a few crackers displayed in bar. We did not expect crackers but a candle on the table would have been nice! No one checked back at the table. I had to ask for water even though glasses were out. Duck was nice but no way ws it cooked medium rare! In all enjoyable meal but dissapointing experience and sadly as a local I would probably not go back.

We had our works Christmas party here and it was brilliant. Having the restaurant to ourselves(16 of us) made it even more special. The food and service was superb and professional. Most of us had the rib eye steak and it was cooked to perfection. I had the mushroom and cheese omelette and chocolate tart for pudding which lovely and the little canapés were a nice touch too.I would definitely go back and I'm hoping it will be very soon.

Staying nearby in Derbyshire for the weekend and pre-booked this restaurants after reading previous reviews. Slightly dubious on arrival as not great looking from outside. Small snug area in entrance which is very cosy with open fire ablaze but not a very comfortable place to sit and study the menus, would have preferred comfier chairs. After placing our orders we were given some lovely Hors d'oeuvres. The restaurant its self is very small but intimate and the staff were efficient and friendly. The food was exceptional so compliments to the chef, the presentation, size of portions, taste and attention to detail were first class. 3 course Sunday lunch £16.50 and well worth the money. If extra effort could be made will the snug and bar area, toilets and change of the paintings that didn't fit at all with the style of the restaurant then this would be an outstanding recommendation.

Me and my wife went to the opening night of the garden (at the back) as we'd previously attended the opening night with the new owners. With a free glass of bubbly each! The food is the restaurant's highest strength. I've had the chicken and the beef on different occasions and been blown away how good food can be. We get so used to being disappointed and putting up with sub standard food it's great to be nicely surprised by this hidden gem of a place. The interior is small but cosy and friendly. The staff and service are always excellent. To be honest I can't fault the place. The starters are to die for! Just try the place but I would make sure you book. I think they're open Wed-Sunday. It's not pretentious and they do good real ale too. Ah that's my only section for my wishlist. A few extra real ales would make this place perfect. Better for romantic couples than huge parties I'd say.

We were a party of 6 for Sunday Lunch (two who found difficulty with stairs). Our table was booked for 1 p.m. On arrival at the public car park opposite the restaurant, a smiling face greeted us at the front door which had been opened for us because the normal entry was down the side and a few steps had to be negotiated to get to the dining room. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals and we had ordered differently. The food was excellent, hot and flavoursome and the service was friendly without being pushy and the ambience totally relaxing. Full marks to the Old Post Restaurant. You are recommended to all who visit Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

From the moment we walked in we felt welcome - by the staff, by the warmth of the log fire and by the atmosphere of this small and intimate restaurant. The menu was quite compact and prices were higher than average but we had no problem choosing main courses and desserts and every mouthful was delicious (between us and another couple who were staying at the same B&B we tried a total of four of the main courses and two of the desserts and were in agreement that all of the food was superb). For us the portion sizes were perfect and the flavours divine. If you are looking for a good restaurant in Chesterfield you need look no further in our view.

We dined here and benefited from the £18 for 2 courses offer. Whilst dishes were well presented the portions were small (tomato and basil soup barely covered half the dish; scallops sliced in 2; small slices of lamb in the main course). We didnt stay for dessert. The offer saved us approx £50 (most starters £8, mains £18). Overall, OK but need to work harder to merit the "top restaurant in Chesterfield".
