Really tasty food but cold restaurant, by cold I mean temperature and not temperament. The staff are courteous and patient, the food is delicious. Been a few times over the years, the scallops with their bacon accompaniment is a favourite of ours. The lamb is tasty but the sauce is a little overpowering, this dish would suit winter too. The pickled herring is definitely an acquired taste so don't order if you are unsure. However, it is an essential for the menu and is appreciated. The Cullen Skink was delightful as usual and the crockery was quaint. Definitely has charm and a homely feel to it but the chairs and tables aren't cosy, more stylish and classy. A great place for a date. I do feel for the style of tables and stone walls the heating needs to be more appropriate. There is a mini-bar but this place is a restaurant, definitely wouldn't sit for drinks, one would need a warm meal. I understand that during the season, keeping the heating can cost too much but this would make a more enjoyable experience. I don't want to have to wear my jacket or be shivering when I eat, and I enjoy cold water / winter swimming so I don't get cold easily. When you are sitting down you get colder more easily. Even a small artificial heater would be amazing. I really love the decor of the place too, the dark furniture is brilliant and would look amazing at Christmas time. Thank you!

We were attracted to this restaurant by the great reviews. Our experience was mixed. Service was great: friendly and efficient. The building itself is really atmospheric. However, we were disappointed with the food. I was really looking forward to the Skye Lamb rack and made sure to confirm with the waitress that it would be served ‘pink’. It was tasty but overcooked and fatty. I did mention this to the waitress, who was obviously not happy with the feedback.

Unfortunately we did not get to taste your food. After reading the great reviews we decided to try. As we have a dog and indoors is not dog friendly, I asked if we could eat outside to be told “sorry we’ve decided not to serve outside today as it might rain!” We are in Scotland, the weather is always unpredictable!!! I explained we only wanted to have the Cullen skink to be told , still- no sorry!!! We would’ve had a drink also so approx £30 lost on us sitting outside for half an hour!!! Just doesn’t make sense!! I’m happy you can afford to lose customers in these quiet times! The lady was very nice who had to tell me this but think it’s embarrassing for Scottish hospitality!!

This is the second time we have stayed at The Old Library Lodge & Restaurant. David and Penny Buick were again very welcoming and the food was excellent. Nothing seems to be too much trouble for them. The room we had was very comfortable and the restaurant excellent. Breakfasts were excellent. The fish and chips superb. The Rack of Lamb was ideal and just as I like land. The Scallops were freshly caught and ideally cooked. The views from the front of the hotel were beautiful at all times of the day. An ideal location for a holiday. It was a shame that we had to move onto to Skye. We hope we can return in the near future.

Four of us had lunch at the Old Library twice while on holiday in the area. Both meals were excellent and really tasty. The highlight was the lamb which was succulent, juicy and tender with a delicious jus and served with a lovely side of potatoes and vegetables. Starters and puddings were also very good. We ate here on a Tuesday evening and luckily had booked well in advance. It was very busy but with only 9 tables and 6 of those reserved for people staying overnight we were lucky to get a table. The atmosphere is cosy and the staff lovely. We both had battered haddock and chips with a small salad garnish and tartare sauce. I had white chocolate cheesecake which was also very good. 10/10 for the excellent food, service and ambiance.

On arrival it was obvious there was no table ready for us even though I had received our booking confirmation from David Buick on 2 July. Just looks of puzzlement. Given a table then all downhill after that. Staff just not interested at all. This was noticable given all who came in after us were greeted as you would expect in a restaurant. Couldn’t wait to leave. Strange experience indeed!!!

No complaints about food - delicious. I booked this meal on 2 July for 6pm. David Buick responded with confirmation of this time and date quite quickly after sending it but, when we walked in it was obvious there was no table booked for us. Went downhill after that. Given a table, but service poor. Couldn’t wait to complete the meal and get out. Given that everyone who came in after us were given a cheery welcome, it seemed strange we were treated differently. It was quite a strange experience for us.

As advised on their site I rang after 5.30 pm and placed an order with a very helpful gentleman for two haddock fish suppers. We agreed I would collect just after they opened at 6.00pm. The fish was beautifully fresh and the batter light and crispy, the chips were soft and fluffy inside and crispy on the out. Bothe were hot and sauces in packets were provided for us to take too, some sort of veg or salad would have been a bonus but all in all a great meal, good value and a fantastic experience.

So it’s billed as number one in Arisaig and has a blackboard outside advertising local langoustine. Inside - very ordinary restaurant, due to nature of old building only a few tables will be able to see the lovely sea view. No langoustine available despite board outside with them chalked on. All food was fine, scallops starter was not generous, steamed/boiled veg, nothing green. Any competent home cook could have rustled you the food. The chocolate mousse was heavy and pretty inedible, the sticky toffee pudding came as soon as the microwave had dinged. All in all three courses, with beer and a glass of wine and little change from £100 for two and in and out in an hour. Not good value.

This is not a place to come to if you want fancy service and gushing waiters. If on the other hand you want terrific food, served by friendly, down to earth staff, looking out onto what must be one of the most fabulous vistas on earth, never mind just Scotland, this is your place. There’s nothing fancy about the restaurant itself but the food is wonderful. We had gravadlax and scallops as starters, the breaded haddock, lamb cutlets and venison as main courses. The lamb and venison were so soft, you just let the meat melt in your mouth. The chips with the haddock were chunky and well cooked and the haddock well battered and cooked. A plate of impeccable vegetables with the two meat dishes complemented them perfectly. My companions had sticky toffee pudding, and I scooped some of the rich sauce, just the right consistency, while my cranachan ice cream was very good.We don’t drink, so soft drinks are important and the ginger beer was a good brand, which I think is always something that tells you a lot about the chef and the sommelier. It’s very easy just to serve the big brands which aren’t always the best.Booking is absolutely essential as there aren’t many tables (not sure if this is a Covid or just a space problem). I want to come back here. Please ....!

We had a takeaway fish and chips from here on our first night in this area and enjoyed them. So we reserved a table a few nights later to give the table service a go and we were so happy we did. It is clear it is popular as the restaurant always seemed to be full, socially distanced of course. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful, a smile always goes a long way and this lady had them in abundance. The meals were excellent a good choice but as we were by the coast for us it had to be fish and the grilled haddock with parsley butter and vegetables did not disappoint, it was delicious. As we had not had my favourite soup Cullen skink we imbibed in a dessert. Usually cheesecake is disappointing but the salted caramel offering from the Old Library was excellent well presented and very tasty. I wish now I had ordered the Cullen skink too. This time we stayed overnight. The room was a good match to the desiderata for a Restaurant with rooms, with a good sun trap veranda with stunning views of the bay and harbour. Pity it was raining and cold as the first of the heavy Atlantic westerlies had just swept in. As for the food ...The food was prepared with skill and verve. The service was excellent. The wine list well chosen, but the wine we wanted was 'out of stock'. A suitable alternative was proffered sommelier style. The Isle of Mull scallops were more than competently executed and the Cullen Skink was rich and very tasty. Made the memsahib feel guilty. The Venison was enough to make me jealous. Why can't I coax such flavours out of my venison ... might it be because the best bits of the venison my butcher gets are spoiled by the gravelly bits, I don't know but doubt it. I got an appropriate pan and cook with gas ... or perhaps even Waitrose finest are not up to the job. I have frequently said that the mettle of a kitchen is revealed in the vegetables. The ones that accompanied my venison were exceptionally good, beautifully earthy potatoes', perfectly cooked carrots, really good swede and crisp mange tout peas ... and no it wasn't the light butter dressing. The rack of lamb was 'perfecto' and the chips were 'what chips were supposed to be like, fluffy on the inside and crisp on the outside. My friend Eileen, born in a very parochial town, in her independent travel infancy, after 55 years of residency there as a member of the local movers and shakers, was taken into a trattoria in Venice famed for its veal liver was determined to have a Bolton normal ladies lunch of a soup and a slice of cake and perhaps a coffee. The other thing this Restaurant was famous for was its patron ... a very techy granny ... who insisted granny not the customer who was always right and that you came here for a proper lunch otherwise you were a waste of space. When I see bad reviews of this place I am reminded of the explosion of conflicting normalities between Eileen and that granny. If you come here I'd advise you to go with this restaurants flow, the sheer quality of the food and the cooking are well worth a temporary readjustment of your expectations of what a cafe/restaurant can do.Sadly Eileen never fully accepted the first plate and second plate of Italian eating or that the meatballs should flavour the sause that comes with your pasta rather than hide in it.Just go with the flow and enjoy this place. As for the 'Highland' breakfast it is large and brutal as it should be ... a veritably 'dustbin lid' of the delights listed. The smoked salmon with scrambled eggs is an elegant construction, once again perfect for what it is.Go there, go with the flow and accept that this kitchen knows what it is doing and apart from the coffee, made to British tastes, does it exceptionally well.

Visited today for lunch and sat outside as we had a dog with us. Restaurant are only serving hot meals so in the current conditions this is not a place for coffee, sandwiches, & cake. However they do take away meals & whilst they said no need to book for lunch a black board outside said evening reservations required. All COVID set up, you couldn’t go inside without ringing the bell and sanitising, track and trace checked. There is a basic menu and then lots of amazing specials to choose from if you wish like fresh langoustines, haggis whisky meatballs, gravelax etc. We went for fish and chips and scampi and chips. Huge portion for me, clearly fresh fish, chunky chips and salad provided too. Bottled beer only larger so we had two peronis each and in all came to £40. The staff were very helpful and attentive, we were pleased to be able to support them.

We had a perfect lunch here after a long bike ride. Delicious haggis balls in whisky sauce followed by scampi and chips. Whole thing was delicious and staff were very friendly. What a lovely place - we will definitely return next time we’re in the area.

Fantastic place to stay , the food is absolutely amazing. We stayed here for the night with family , there were eight of us and the level of service was excellent. The attention to detail in the room was outstanding, they have thought of everything. Thank you for making our family trip a very special one . Looking forward to coming back again .

We have been visiting the area for many years now and in the last 2 or 3 The Old Library has become the number 1 choice to stay and dine (exclusively now to be honest). The staff are friendly, the rooms are spacious and the "Chalet" type to the rear have wee verandas looking onto the garden- right sun traps on an afternoon/evening. The food is lovely with a good choice and ever changing specials menu, service and quantities can not be faulted either. Scottish bottled beers, good wine selection and of course a good choice of whiskey.

Excellent lunch at the Old Library the other day. Friendly, helpful staff, beautifully cooked simple lunch at a very reasonable price. Enjoyed sitting outside with a wonderful view over to Eigg despite the showery weather. "If it starts raining don't worry, we'll squeeze you in somewhere!" But it didn't.

Stayed at the Lodge and ate in the restaurant . The room was at the back of the Lodge in a small chalet like room. In fact to say it was small would be unfair. It was ideal for my wife and myself. The restaurant was brilliant. A great choice of locally sourced food with plenty of fishy dishes on the special menu. We both started with scallops....then rack of lamb for me and Halibut for my wife.....sensational. Now, being a so-called expert on STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING I thought that the STP at the Abbotsford Hotel in Ayr would never be beaten. I have to admit I was wrong. The STP they served here was more than words can describe. Wonderful, brilliant, superb....just the bees knees! The best I have ever tasted.

Another fantastic dining experience at The Old Library. Delicious food and excellent service in comfortable surroundings. Penny & David have certainly made a positive impact in Arisaig and are steadily renovating the property and facilities. We look forward to visiting again in this - their second year as proprietors.

We stayed at the old library lodge for 3 nights for our anniversary. Nice friendly welcome from The owner. The location and views are amazing. We ate here 2 nights and can really recommend the restaurant. Home made soup was tasty, salmon lovely and my husband says the scallops and mussels were delicious. The room was fine. Bedding was lovely and big fluffy towels. There is also a pub just along the road with a nice atmosphere and a fire. We left 2 shirts in the wardrobe. Thanks so much for posting them back. Got them the next day.

Really lovely atmosphere and a wonderful welcome. Food is very good, fish and chips excellent and rack of lamb delicious. Might be nice to have a kids menu with slightly smaller/cheaper portions, it’s a little pricey as it stands when eating with kids. Overall though, would definitely recommend this place!

Listed on Trip Advisor as being vegetarian friendly but there was only soup on the lunchtime menu which I didn't fancy. When I enquired if it would be possible to have something from the evening menu a rather unfriendly waitress said she would ask the chef. I did get my alternative and it was delicious but my experience was spoiled by the service.

This is a restaurant which makes me wish that there were bonus stars to give. We spent two nights in Arisaig and ate here both evenings. The fish dishes are stunning. We shared a whole brill tonight, with saffron sauce and mussels. Fresh and perfectly cooked. The hosts are friendly and kindly. Two perfect dinners. If only we were here tomorrow evening too!

A great stay with a group of friends.Friendly host who knew how to cook fish! Most impressive and the gravalax was by some way the best I've ever tasted. This was followed by delicious sole.My French pal Corinne had a giant plaice with which she was extremely impressed. The rooms were good and the breakfast then almost matched the previous evening's delight with the best Kippers I've ever had.Nice people and I felt they definitely deserved a great review.Ten out of ten for me.

Won't be back the owner is so rude . If you pay for drinks in a pub hotel . You expect a thank you. Total anti children our three year old was chatting and we Heard the owners rude comment about him . Also we took her seat . The poor lass who runs hand and foot for this person is so friendly it's the only reason we stayed so long . Won't be back and won't recommend to any of our family and friends that visit the port . Maybe someone will take over the Caledonian and make it a hotel and pub again . We have been visiting the port for 40 years and haven't experienced the unfriendly signal we got from the castle hotel .

What a fantastic find on our recent visit to Inverness. Brilliant wee cafe with extremely friendly staff. Great menu and selection of fresh cakes. Lovely relaxed atmosphere and to top it all they are doggy friendly which meant we didn’t need to leave our 14yr old pooch in the car. Would definitely recommend a visit.
