Old Grindstone in Sheffield

I’ve frequenting the Grindstone for 8 years. Since true north took over it’s made a massive improvement, hence why i go quite a lot. The staff are friendly, polite and professional. The new menu is brilliant especially the hotdogs. Connor and Joel and their team are fantastic. Great for pool and sport.

Good local pub, with sports theme and large projection TV towards back. Serves food, burgers, wraps, chips etc. Food menu has recently changed, think there is a new caterer. The menu seems to have less variety than previously, with less vegan and vegetarian options. Quiet place for lunch, believe it is a favourite evening place of locals and student population of Crookes.

Booked a karaoke room - incredible value, great service and the best activity for my friends and I. Loved it thank you so much!!

Great pub - good food, friendly staff, a nice mix of liveliness on the weekends and get some quiet evenings mid week. By far the best pub in Crookes currently.

Great bar staff and good selection of drinks however food was awful. We were a table of 9 and were asked to preorder our meals as we were a large table and to ensure the kitchen had everything for our meal. However of the 9 people not 1 person got what they ordered as the kitchen had ran out so we all had something substituted or replaced and everything that did come was burnt dry and oily. They gave one member of our group a real chicken burger when they are vegan and pre-ordered the vegan burger (thankfully this person realised before eating). We all found the whole experience quite funny but still would not recommend anyone wasting their money on the food which everyone else in the pub seemed to know as we were the only table eating. After the meal we ended to walking to The York and all of us were complaining about stomach pains and several members of the group are still feeling off today from it. So learn from us go for the drinks not for the food.

If you're coming to the Grindstone for drinks, I'm sure you'll have a great time. ...but the food was beyond awful. I trusted it would be good thanks to it being a True North bar/kitchen and associated with the Broadfield. Wish I'd read the reviews before! I booked for a table of 9. Got asked to send across our pre-orders ahead of time, as they wanted to ensure the kitchen would have everything in stock - perfect. When we arrived, it was already the wrong number of people booked in for the festive platter - a sign of things to come... **Every single order had a missing element or something wrong.** Literally every single one. Despite pre-ordering so the kitchen could be ready? One person ordered a vegan chicken burger and got a real chicken burger and luckily they themselves realised - staff had no idea. Everything was unbelievably oily and deep fried - I can't express how greasy every single aspect of the meal was. One person ordered a box meal; everything was completely burnt and the donner meat in the meal resembled a deep-fried shoe sole. To top it all off, of the 9 people, several of us have had upset stomachs today (the following day). tl;dr Only eat at the Grindstone if you're looking to have a full-body clear out

Old fashioned but modern pub loved it

No creas que el personal sabe limpiar después de los clientes, los vidrios dejados afuera en los bancos todo el tiempo y en las aceras , también hay 2 montones de enfermos justo afuera de la parte delantera que ha estado allí desde hace un par de días , lo difícil que es sólo conseguir un poco de agua y cepillarla . Creo que deben caminar con los ojos cerrados la mayor parte del tiempo o simplemente ser perezosos , y el ruido de la noche es ridículo ya que los clientes deberían estar dentro después de las 11 de la noche , y sí vivo cerca de la muela, no soy un idiota de bar, pero estos problemas necesitan ser resueltos, ya que podría ser peligroso con el vidrio se queda fuera durante la noche.

The menu seems to change here a fair bit but usually been pretty ok with a few occasions of very good. Now it's changed to fried chicken and burgers. Waited 45 mins for a chicken wrap, doner wrap and chips. The wraps were basically 1 bite each of extremely poor doner and freezer chicken with a shred of luttuce. Poor even before you add the cost which was outrageous. £7 for a wrap that was not even a starter size. Imagine weatherspoons but worse quality, half the size and 3 times the price.

This review is just for the food. 18 months ago the food was amazing. Fresh and tasty. Now it is slop glammed up as American food which devalues the great pub the grindstone is. If you want a great pub for a drink, yes the grindstone is great but if you want the great food they used to have 18+ months ago think again and go ANYWHERE else

Good pub, great choice of beers and lagers . It used to be my local before I moved out of the area.

The menu is very limited. Pretty much burgers and hot dogs. We went for a family meal and everyone's food came at different times. Up to half an hour between people. It kinda ruined the whole experience. The worst thing was it wasn't busy. It was an wednesday evening and there was our us and one other party dining. I don't think there really capable of servings food.

I have only given one star because, the range of beers is good and the service is good, but, I applied for a rewards card and was sent the link and was annoyed to see how much information they wanted from me. Totally unnecessary. All that's needed is a cardboard card and a rubber stamp behind the bar to stamp the card at each purchase. Kane Yeardley take note.

Vegetarian/vegan options are good. Lots of good beer on tap. Great location in Crookes.

Karaoke here was ace 5 starts for the guy who sorted us with the piercings sorry I don't know your name!

Great place for a drink and to watch the football

Ignorant staff. Went for a chilled pint with a mate. We were chatting at the bar and when I asked for another round the young barmaid accused me of being drunk and refused to serve me. She was pretty hostile and rude and I can only imagine she had another motive as I was neither drunk nor leary. We would've left happy after one more as it nearing last orders anyway. This has left a had feeling about one of my local pubs and I won't be going back in a hurry!

Not keen on the food here but the karaoke booths are great, as is the beer.

With a group of friends, we had gone to the Grindstone for a nostalgic visit, having not been there for over 40 years (but it did come recommended by a friend who lives locally). The pub is modernised, and this means loud music (a touch too loud for us old gits, as conversation was challenged) while you find yourself surrounded by a variety of TV screens all showing different programmes. But the beer is good and the BBQ food OK (the pulled pork I had was acceptable but a bit old in taste) I do not think I would return for the above reasons.

This is a great pub. We will continue to frequent! Super nice staff. Good variety of foods, and great drinks.

Normally love the Grindstone but it’s really let itself down tonight. Turned off the stock market early and only 1 crash. A real disrespect to its patrons and those looking to get involved. Will not be back.

Friendly staff and we sang our hearts out in.the private karaoke rooms upstairs. Welcoming, easy and also spacious overall, which felt great. Will be back.

Called in on Thursday evening just for a drink. Beer was excellent. The bar service was friendly and efficient.

Some of the saddest BBQ I have ever had. Got the big variety platter, and none of it was edible. Might want to consider going back to standard pub grub.

We had a great time here at the karaoke for our friends birthday. We were a group of 15 and shown to our own private room upstairs for our 2 hour karaoke slot. We truly had the best time, the room was just the right size for us, wonderfully decorated with fancy lights and an amazing karaoke system which was super easy to use and a wide array of songs meant be didn't stop singing. So much so we even extended our slot and added an extra hour! Drinks prices very reasonable and speedy service too. We had such a lovely time we will definitely be back in the future, thankyou!

Food is okay but staff is not very professional. I went there for a society dinner and all the dishes were pre-ordered. I am vegetarian by religion so before eating I asked the staff if she could inform me which is non-vegetarian and which is vegetarian. She told me and then left off so I ate the dish and tasted something unusual so I asked my friend and she told me it tastes like sausage which made me suspicious. So, when the staff came back I asked her again to confirm which are the vegetarian dishes and only then she realized and told me "oh this one is non-veg my bad" in a very casual tone and left of again. I was very upset but I didn't say much. Just so you know in another country a restaurant could be sued for such behavior. Hope this doesn't happen to anyone again. The staff needs to take notes.

Hired one of the karaoke rooms for my daughter’s 13th birthday with som of her friends. They had a brilliant time. Staff were excellent and really accommodating. Would highly recommend to anyone for something a bit different. And a bargain price!

The foods terrible now literally inedible the pork tacos were so over cooked it was like eating rubbers, don’t know how you get chunks from pulled pork. The beef is supposed to be 21 hours cooked low and slow but I can hold it on a fork without it pulling apart, I’d have an easier time chewing through a table leg, not to mention everything was cold , A year ago it used to be good but it’s fallen off now.

Great pub, full of character. I'll definitely be returning.

My dog thinks the chairs are too tall and feels isolated on the floor below, the bar staff are fantastical, and the food is scrumptious

Came in Sunday 24th September for a meal at night . Had the brisket of beef . I'm sorry it was the worst meal I've eaten in a pub . The meat was tuff and some of us could not even eat the meal . Not your typical Sunday veg either . Expensive for the money on a plus side pub nice, good service good .

Lovely little pub, good atmosphere. Definitely will visit again when I'm next in Sheffield. The food was good, I had the smoked chicken and I'm not a fan of smoked food normally (personal preference), but it did grow on me. I also had brownie and ice cream for pud and it was awesome. Definitely recommend. Definitely return again.

My favourite pub in Sheffield! Large selection of drinks including fairly priced cocktails, good food menu with a variety of options available. It also has a pool table, several TVs and even some board games, and is dog friendly. It's definitely worth the trip up to Crookes!

Beer was good quality and place clean and large. Staff were friendly and the place had a nice vibe, even if we did go in a little late and many had left.

The staff are always really helpful, especially when it comes to food intolérances!

Really nice pub. Good beer, good staff, good location. We walked down from the top of crookes on a crawl and ended up here. Then dropped to Broomhill to finish off. Lovely walk. Staff here were lovely and the place is nice and clean.

A great pub at the end of Crookes before you walk down to Broomhill. The atmosphere is friendly, with some great beers on tap and lovely food on the menu to boot. For those wanting a game of pool there is a table towards the back of the pub, with many screens for people wanting to watch the sport.

Nice food. We both had a sandwich: chopped cheese, a kind off Philly cheesesteak affair and a pulled brisket. Both on decent bread. The hand pulled Grindstone pale was in absolutely Tip-top condition.

Large open planned bar with pool table and TV'S. Excellent real ale. I had Bradfield's seasonal Belgian Blue. Friendly staff. Paulicarus came back for Christmas.

Had a brilliant evening in a karaoke room. So much fun! The staff were so friendly and helpful, cheap drinks and a really good atmosphere. Great for a party. Thank you to you all for such a good evening, we will be back!

True North establishment with all you expect from the team. Surprisingly cheaper than their other offering at the Punchbowl, also in Crookes. Definatley worth a visit for sport on numerous tv screens, pool table and always excellent music.

Played in a band there last week. Such a good, friendly vibe about this place. A very diverse crowd and lots of nooks and crannies for relaxing in. Great selection of beers too.

A friendly, comfortable pub with tasty food at good prices. The two burger meals for one deal was great value and we all enjoyed our food.

The Grindstone is located on Crookes main street. It is a large venue with indoor and outdoor seating and a pool table. There is a good choice of quality beers, including Prahava and Madri. They are well staffed for the time of day. The interior decor is gothic themed with clare walls and gothic art work on display. There is a choice of padded bench seats for comfort or harder seats for dining. Unfortunately, one member of staff was shouting homophobic ridicule across the bar to another member of staff, saying about the music they were playing "have you been searching gay anthems?" because a George Michael record was playing and then swiftly changed the music to play The Beatles instead. I am appalled that someone who is at work would have the audacity to make homophobic comment to a colleague and in front of customers too. Shame on them. It seems this bar is not a welcoming environment for homosexuals.

Changed over the years; sure for the younger generation a top pub; Years ago it had character, regular customers, always popular, different pub now. Over priced .

Meh. Food was overpriced for what it was,staff were ok but felt a bit robotic. Feels like a generic chain pub and not like other True North pubs we have visited. Overall just a bit meh. *Edited* So after I went to the bar for the second time I feel I have to edit the part about the staff. No charisma,not unfriendly but just looked like they didn't want to be there. Just fell really flat in customer service,didn't really seem to know what they were doing,quite slow. I think training is required.

Used to live in Sheffield, recently visited and glad we popped in to The Old Grindstone. Staff are lovely and the sign on the wall about the new screen gave us a chuckle. It's clean with big screen for sports (and some smaller ones) and there's still a pool table, which our 7 year old played on. We had some nachos and our son had a kids meal. Good pub!

Great pub, and a very good place to eat too. Decent selection of beers and spirits. The smokehouse food offering is excellent. Simple and honest, but overall tasty. You could really taste the smoke on the ribs. Good portions, good value. Good range of TVs and pool tables, but also some quiet nooks with comfy Chesterfield seats.

Really good food and big screens for football. Only complaint was the chicken wing roulette - couldnt tell which was meant to be the spicy one.
