Guardhouse Restaurant in Sheffield

Dissapointed to find a new menu and shocked at the prices, we stayed as it was the easiest option for us, we enjoyed our meal and the staff were good they always are, but we won't return. I have visited many times over the years with friends and family but won't return unless changes are made. Where' s the soup on the starters. I love the venue but at the end of the day your are a pub.

Have always wanted to dine here however I found the menu and food to be dull and very basic. It was ok for a mid-week meal but I have cooked better at home.

Party of 8 just had a great Sunday lunch with 7 of us having the traditional Sunday roast and 1 having fish and chips. The restaurant was not too busy with nice tables laid out in plenty of space , the staff were pleasant and attentive but not being over attentive. The food was very reasonably priced and I must say was the tastiest sunday lunch I have had in years and the gravy was so rich and flavoursome, there was a choice of four meats. The sweet was a very light and tasty lemon meringue with other options available. We will definitely be visiting again.

I was staying in the old barracks hotel below this place and enjoyed a few drinks in here before going to the speedway. It is a lovely quirky pub and the staff were young, pretty and unusual (in a good way)...and it was full of quirky characters...the ideal place for people watching. The selection of beers was really good and obviously spirits and wines too. I returned here after the speedway for a couple more drinks and they were really polite again, even letting me take a couple of drinks to my room in the hotel below. Will definitely stay at the hotel next door again and come here for food.

I booked here for my Christmas Day lunch and will give it full marks. When arriving we were handed a glass of sparkling wine , the tables were very nicely dressed and we were not all ushered in at once, we were booked in in intervals which made it better all round. The food was one hundred percent , I loved the belly pork starter and we all had a liqueur with our cheesecake dessert then we had mince pies and chocolate bon bons. We finished it off with tea and coffee in cups as big as soup bowls. I've had Christmas dinner in some top hotels and paid a fortune but it was never as good as this. Well done to all the staff and chefs , we will be back.

Been here many times and the food is always good, never had a bad meal yet. This Christmas instead of all the hassle of cooking a Christmas dinner we decided to eat out. We chose the Garrison because it is guaranteed good food and value for money. The four of us were made very welcome as usual , the Christmas decorations looked lovely without it being over done and the service was fantastic, well done staff. The tables looked immaculate with the beautiful white tablecloths and centre decoration, all the bookings were spaced out which made it better all round for everyone including the kitchen.. It was very well organised. Now for the food, we all had different starters, I had the smoked salmon pate with salad and toast plus a half of smoke salmon fish, ample portion. My husband had the belly pork and plenty of it, I could have eaten it myself when I saw it. For main I chose the original turkey and all the years I've been eating turkey including cooking my own, this had to be the best, it was soo tender and tasty. The roast potatoes were proper roast potatoes not the froze ones that are rock hard once cooked. Everything on our plates were delicious and good portions including the sea bass and the roast beef and proper gravy mmm I could eat it all again. Our cheesecake desserts were fabulous , we had mince pies and truffles , tea , coffee and orange juice, they didn't skimp on anything. Well done to the chefs too and all who organised the day.

We went to the Garrison for a meal in the bar. The waiting time was 40 mins but at least we were told that when we ordered. The salmon was very good as was the scampi and chips. However, I would warn against choosing the steak and ale pie. The pastry was soggy and the meat was chewy, like trying to eat old shoe leather! I think that it would be an idea for the chef to eat one of the pies and then decide if this should still be on the menu. I had two bites and then just gave up. The chips and peas were fine. All the staff are helpful and friendly and the surroundings are pleasant but quite dark due to the nature of the old building.

Sunday lunch was absolutely vile! Completely tasteless and unseasoned, over boiled,mushy veg,microwaved packet mash and frozen salmon. The Staff are lovely but food is horrendous.

Stopped for a late lunch. This place is more like a hotel bar than a restaurant. Good for drinks, but the food is typical pub grub and the wines we wanted were out of stock. Decent service with a smile, though. Overall ok for s quick bite and drink, just don’t your hopes too high.

We’ve been going to the garrison for a few years the food is always great and the service was always faultless the last two visits one on a Sunday afternoon and one on a Friday night everything set off ok then I think who is the new manager thinks you can’t hear him through the masks made the young waitresses working with him feel like everything they were doing was wrong and when they did as he had barked at them the service went down hill. He made us feel that uncomfortable his behaviour to young girls trying to learn a job that we left as soon as possible. He needs to concentrate on his own skills before trying to teach others. I’m sure you will have a revolving door for staff soon with his poor management skills. We have been tonight Tuesday 6/7/21 two females on greeted wonderfully very prompt service great food as always and we felt welcome and relaxed they were fantastic with our two year old granddaughter nothing was too much trouble. I fear if this man doesn’t go on some management and customer service training course you may not have customers to enjoy your great food and relaxing environment . I’m sure I’m not alone in this though and hope you take it on board in these challenging times. I dread to think what his behaviour would be at a busy function I hope I never have to witness it

I liked that the menu was small. More chance of things being fresh. I had the burger which was great. Mark, who I'm assuming is the manager was absolutely lovely - a real credit to the place. The decor needs stripped back. Get rid of all the drapes and the gahstly carpet. And the endless images of red coats shooting people is a out dated and bordering on offensive. I know the history of the place - dont care - no one needs to see loads of illustrations of people being shot at by soldiers of the empire - this is 2020!

Food was excellent, lots of it, served hot covering all tastes. Breakfast of a very high standard too cooked to order.

Small menu, but with simple quality food. I went for the home made meat and potato pie a real taste of home all served by friendly staff.

So,before writing a review on here, I did email the Garrison 7 days ago. But since nobody has bothered to reply or apologise, I have decided to go ahead with my review. I was in charge of organising our work xmas party. As I have attended weddings, christenings and funerals here and always had a great meal, I recommended The Garrison to my colleagues. Unfortunately I spent most of the evening apologising to the other 43 guests as the food was definately below its usual standard. Those who had the prawn cocktail said it was swimming in sauce and tasteless. The tuna steaks were overcooked, grey and dry. The turkey dinners looked like they'd scraped together some left overs from Sunday lunch. And the vegetables were practically raw. Then there were 3 desserts missing, despite the waiter telling us they had all been handed out. At £33pp, it wasn't cheap, and we were a party of 44. So quite a large sum of money spent and that's without how much we spent at the bar. It was such a shame, considering I was so confident in choosing here. And I am very disappointed that nobody could be bothered to reply to my email. Not good customer relations at all!

The best attribute is the staff so kind and friendly, made our meal experience , lovely breakfast, even delivered to the room.

I so enjoyed my gluten free fish and chips (using gluten free batter). However, on a Sunday they close early and I didn't get there in time..BUT...they were very good about me bringing a McDonald's in/

Receptionist very accommodating and friendly considering the circumstances she was presented with no internet for bookings and everyone in Sheffield being flooded and unable to return home so many used this as a base. She was very busy and helpful, hotel room average could do with abit of a upgrade looks tired and bored. Very very 90s and not in a good way.

i and a friend stayed here when we went to watch a foot ball match we have stayed here many times the staff are all ways very polite and nothing is to much trouble the rooms are nice and compy

Mi esposo y yo somos patrocinadores frecuentes de la guarnición. Ha habido problemas con su máquina de tarjetas en funcionamiento desde agosto. Siendo un establecimiento tan grande y ocupado, uno hubiera pensado que cualquier problema habría sido rectificado. Hemos visitado la guarnición en varias ocasiones cuando los técnicos supuestamente han rectificado el problema. Ahora estamos en noviembre, 3 meses y todavía hay problemas con la máquina de pago con tarjeta. Esta noche a nosotros / mi esposo se nos ordenó ir al cajero automático más cercano para obtener efectivo para pagar nuestra factura. A pesar de que nos pusieron en una pestaña por un tiempo antes de que nos dieran cuenta de cualquier problema. No nos pidieron pero nos dijeron que fuéramos a un cajero automático para sacar dinero en efectivo para pagar nuestra factura. Afortunadamente, podemos hacer esto, pero desafortunadamente algunas personas menos capaces pueden no serlo.

my wife and i booked a table for our wedding anniversary,when we got there we was told there was a funeral party in the resteraunt, would we sit in the bar area we was told, no place settings just a nife and fork wraped in a serviet,we both ordered steak, waited 50 minutes for it,when it came it was cold,we asked for some gravy and when it came we both had eaten the meal, just a complete disaster,i dont think the chef could cope with volume of custormers,wast of good money.

staff were polite/helpful rooms were clean,needs air conditioning as room was stuffy,A small fridge would make a difference.would i stay here again yes

We decided to “eat in” as it was quite late when we checked in. Choice and prices were ok and we chose a sandwich each, with a side order of fries. Confusion reigned on ordering, as the menu had just changed and staff seemed unaware. When food came we had to ask twice for cutlery and then we were surprised with a large(extra) plate of fries! It transpires our food choice came with fries included - something that wasn’t pointed out by staff when ordering. Food itself was tasty and filling, so the “hiccups” didn’t lessen our enjoyment!

The tastiest pub food I have ever had! Good value for money, beautiful location in the historic Hillsborough Garrison, and impeccable, friendly service.

Food generally good but would like a chicken curry & pasta dish - Mac & cheese would do - adding to the menu to provide a little more variety as don’t want chips, as good as they are, night after night.

Nice friendly bar/resto and good meeting spot for a pre match drink. Bit of a walk to Hillsborough stadium though, so not a packed bar..

My daughter and myself stopped for 1 night whilst attending the Sheff Wed v Luton game. I have to say the Garrison was an ideal choice. Location close to ground room spacious and comfortable. Evening meal well priced and plentiful in bar and the breakfast was superb one of the best I have had for variety and I stay away quite a lot for business. If Luton return to Sheffield again in the future I would definitely stop at the Garrison. Even suggest to the wife that it would be an option for a pre Christmas visit.

The Garrison is like a 2nd home to us. We are regular visitors, love the staff, rooms, bar, ambience of the place. Good selection of food, reasonably priced and the breakfasts are excellent. The surrounding area has superb facilities too including a tram route to the City centre, bus station, pubs, cafes, Morrison and petrol station.

The food has been excellent, very generous portions and extremely well cooked and presented. The food always arrived hot.

Only ate here the once whilst staying, food was good value and all in all was fine, outside areas etc easily accessible, as we were complete strangers it might have been helpful if staff had been more informative of the drinks availability, we thought we had no choice of wines, then saw a bottle delivered to a table! Otherwise it was ok

No need to travel for a meal to this bar. Food is maximum average with a limited choice and service satisfactory.

Good food always cater well for our large family group of 40 plus. Only down side is rather expensive not the Sunday set menu prices have gone.

Reservamos mesa para 2 a 3. 00 pm. Llegamos a las 2. 30 informaron al personal que habíamos llegado ordenó una bebida en el bar tomó asiento y esperó. . . . . . .

Tres de nosotros visitamos La Guarnición el sábado 20 de julio, alrededor de las 4. 30 hs para bebidas y comidas para celebrar un cumpleaños. Estaba muy tranquilo en el bar; Sólo un par de personas en cuando llegamos. Pregunté si estaban sirviendo las comidas y me dijeron, "estaban". Pedimos nuestras comidas. Dos de ellos no estaban disponibles, es decir, el pastel de verduras y el champiñón Mushroom Wellington, que dejaron una muy mala elección para los vegetarianos. . Casi nos alejamos en ese punto, pero decidimos no estropear la noche, así que tomamos otras decisiones. No nos dijeron que habría ningún retraso. Más de 35 minutos después seguíamos esperando. No estaban ocupados en el bar. Nadie se disculpó por nuestras comidas retrasadas. Al final preguntamos si nuestras comidas estaban listas y nos dijeron que serían unos 10 minutos más. Decidimos pedir un reembolso y salimos. No fue una experiencia agradable y arruinó lo que debería haber sido una velada agradable. Ahora sabemos por qué el área del bar era tan tranquila y no volveremos en un futuro cercano.

Friendly staff and amazing food service. Service is very quick and staff are always making sure you have your food. Food is good and would recommend!

Siempre disfrutamos de una comida y una bebida en Garrison. En esta última ocasión, nos gustaría decir que hubiéramos apreciado más verduras con la opción de salmón. Las verduras que se servían con el salmón eran escasas y se picaban finamente en la salsa, pero no se servían otras verduras. No habría sido suficiente como una comida sin un entrante.

Nice hotel, set out in a courtyard formation, beautiful building that has been nicely converted into a very good hotel, staff are all really helpful, and nothing is too much trouble, comfortable rooms and beds, would recommend

We stayed an extra night after our wedding. We decided to have an early evening meal. I chose the Sunday Roast offer and I’m so glad I did as it was Roast Lamb. Done perfectly soft with no blood and no fat. Along side the meat was heavenly mash potato and seasonal vegetables. Perfect.

The food was brilliant ....as always ......we have eaten here on a number of occasions we even renewed our wedding vows here in 2014 i would strongly recommend it to everyone the service was outstanding...TOP DRAWER!

The Steak & Ale pie was lovely, the Fish & Chips very good but the batter was a little overdone. The staff were excellent - very friendly & welcoming. The breakfast was also excellent - freshly cooked to order with the usual cereals & croissants if you wanted them.

Every time I visit the garrison restaurant I always have the sirloin steak. If there’s anything you want but don’t see it on the menu then just have a word with a member of the staff.

Really well done Sunday Lunch, generous portions making for excellent value. The service is just right, friendly and attentive but not over bearing. Been here many times and the food and service are always consistent.

Following a recent refurbishment, this is now a very comfortable hotel to stay at.

We use the Garrison every year for our Christmas do. Staff are lovely. Food always comes out hot and you aren't waiting forever.The venue size is just enough, if there are any grumbles it's the fact that sometimes they try to pack in too many people for a sit down meal.

Weve come to the garrision 3 christmases in a row now. This year we had 2 xmas parties here 2 weeks appart. The food is lovely. Service is great and the disco after is fab. Prices are great too. Will deffo be booking our xmas do here again this year

The Garrison guardhouse venue is the perfect place for a party, the food was delicious and the DJ played a great selection of music, just request your favourites and dance the night away. Then some of our friends even stopped the night and enjoyed the hearty breakfast next morning too. A very enjoyable evening was had by all our 17 friends.

Ordered something not on the menu Chef cooked it to my personal liking, attention to detail, full of taste and flavour, excellent meal would recommend trying something for yourself👍👍👍

Booked online. Got email saying they'd let me know later if there was availability. Kept ringing as I didn't get confirmation. After 28 hours I finally got through to someone who told me it was only Christmas menu being served so I was better off with a bar meal. Wasn't given a choice.

Always a great meal with fantastic service. Friendly staff-really clean everywhere. Attended many events here and they’ve always been enjoyable.

So we went here on a work Christmas party. Around 30 of us. Everything from start to finish was great. The food. The drinks. The prices of the drinks. Very reasonable..would highly recommend this to everyone

What a find. We called in for lunch and were not dissapointed. The surroundings an staff were welcoming and the Festive sandwich of Turkey, Brie and Cranberry served with side salad and hand cut chips exceeded expectations. You will see us again.

The food was lovely, and the restaurant catered for gluten free folks. Breakfast the following day was superb. All the staff were really polite and friendly. I would recommend to anyone for a good girly night out.

Great night lovely venue the food was pretty good to say we were all eating at the same time ‘mass’ catering must be organised to perfection which it was. Staff were lovely so all happy!

Lovely historic place fantastic pint of Heineken pricey but worth it

We visit twice a week here as we are local so we have probably spent a lot of cash on barmeals over the last year. Had some great food in the past but recently they have not been so good. Last weeks omelettes were devoid of filling and chips tasted reheated then last nights meals off the specials list gave us both stomach ache and we are still suffering this morning as I do this review. Last nights meals were sweet and sour pork I asked for chips instead of rice and some veg. We were charged £2.75 extra for one portion of veg. When it arrived they both had rice on despite the bar manager personally going to tell the chefs we would like chips. So I decided to stick with the rice and the other went back returning with chips that had clearly been precooked and put back in a fryer as they tasted aweful with old cooking oil taste . The cubes of pork were part fat so had to keep removing fat from them whilst being eaten . Everything was covered in a dark sauce which made it difficult to see the fat until being chewed. As for the little dish of veg £2.75 extra for that was expensive. The veg was the best part of this terrible meal . When the bar manager came for the plates I didn't bother saying anything as my wife didn't wan me to cause a scene. But since we are both still suffering stomach problems the following morning I feel the need to detail our bad experience. Not to mention we spent about £31. Like I say it's not a one off so we will not want to eat there anymore . Main menu is very expensive for these sort of meals . Perhaps the good chefs or shall we say meal preparers have been on day off when we have been dining there lately . I expect a management response will follow looking to lay the blame elsewhere other than the kitchen staff .

Went to TheGarrison with friends for tea go there quite often the food is always lovely the staff are always friendly and very welcoming

Superb night had by all. Food came out very quick, there was ten on our table and we all ate at the same time. Staff were awesome definitely going next year.

Good Food reasonable Priced, there is a good menu and we only eat in the bar area, the food was of a good standard and reasonable priced and the bar seemed to be always full which is a good sign.

Has a really nice Sunday lunch with family from the States. They were very pleased with the food and the lovely staff. The table cloths make a big difference when you go for Sunday dinner. Not enough places left that do this. Great place and great food.

Food order in evening took 45 minutes and restaurant was very quiet, perhaps 10 people in maximum. Food was beautiful when it did arrive though! It appeared the chef popped out as i seen him walking back in and my food was with me 10 mins after this! Breakfast was very poor, coffee terrible, waitress basically offered me a full english and nothing else which consisted of sloppy tomatoes, 1 withered sausage and 1 withered bacon which was not freshly cooked and inedible! I took 2 bites and had to go elsewhere for breakfast

Visited the Garrison Hotel with my elderly father in law en route to a visit to Hallam Hospital, Sheffield. We have seen the Garrison many times from a far and on this occasion decided to visit before heading back North. I only mention that my father in law is elderly for this reason;the staff were marvellous with him and he thoroughly enjoyed his visit. To me that was very very important. And on the plus side the food was really good....Tom even had a pint...and that was great to see. The Hotel and Guardhouse has real character and makes the dining experience really interesting. As we were there we researched the history of the Garrison...there are many captivating stories...Full marks for making the visit a memorable one.

The food was nice enough however not as good as on our visit last year. We ate here twice during our stay as convenient and a lovely setting. Unfortunately, having returned home after lunch, a few hours later I felt very sick, stomach cramps and then a bad stomach. I’m not saying it was the food but had had nothing else to eat anywhere else in 2 days .... plus on both occasions, our meals were served up without cutlery (same waitress) and had to go on the hunt for some plus I was misinformed about the content of the dish I had chosen. Not biggies but could be improved - perhaps these young staff were new and not very experienced - we’ve all been there!

we are from Germany, my English is not so good. I only can say that it is a wonderful place to be. But we only had a beer.

Nice atmosphere, friendly staff, great range of gins and some pretty decent barfood. Some of the kitchen's 'something different' specials didn't really work out, but well done to them for being willing to experiment.

The actual building is huge, with lots of different seating areas, both inside and out. The food was excellent, as we were working in the area, and only stopping one night, we decided to go all out on the mixed grill. Everything was cooked to a high standard, and there were no issues with the food or choice of drinks. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. I could not fault anything at all.

I have had many visits to the Garison Guardhouse Restauaunt and very time I have been I have enjoyed it, very nice food,friendly and helpful staff and excellent entertsinment. Will cljerp on coming back

Ordered a salad with two additions, I chose warm Cajun chicken with stilton cheese tonight, it was amazing, the taste, quality and presentation were perfect. The waitress staff were also fantastic, taking care of every little detail, so helpful, they were fab.

Excellent restaurant and excellent hotel. Staff are fab and nothing too much trouble. Food was lovely and would definitely recommend.

Stayed at the Garrison hotel whilst doing photography for a wedding there. The room was clean and comfortable. Everything I needed in the room. The drinks in the bar were very reasonably priced and the staff were excellent. Helpful, polite and friendly. The actual hotel has kept the majority of the the original garrison. An all-round very nice place.

Staying at the Garrison Hotel, we decided to stay put and eat at the hotel restaurant.

I stayed here with a colleague for 2 nights. It’s well situated for local amenities ( a Morrison’s around the corner) the rooms are spacious and comfortable, the WiFi is good and free! The bar has a good selection of drinks including a wide array of gin ( my favourite) and there are nice places to sit and socialise either inside or out. For such a reasonably priced hotel we were both really impressed. The staff make this place though, they genuinely can’t do enough for you and it’s done with a smile. I would highly recommend this hotel if you are staying in Sheffield.

Good standard of food for mass catering for the 80s night. Service was good and food was hot. The evening was great fun.

Every time I go it's just fantastic meal and evening even had my son's wedding and that was amazing the staff are fantastic would recommend to everyone

The meal was sweet and sour pork. Virtual no meat, and boil in the bag rice. Tasteless even for what could have been a vegetarian dish.

Other my husband and myself are fussy eaters but we were so impressed but the food, the service, and the price of the food on the menu

Had breakfast which was not that nice, when I asked the order taker if they done a vegan breakfast, she looked at me puzzled and said what’s that, I asked if they had veggie sausages, she begrudgle said I will have to check with the chef.

the hotel was amazing, my brother got married there in June and it was fautless. deffo recommend we will be encouraging the bride and groom to do a year reunion so we can stay again
