Very hit and miss. I went last week for Fish & Chips and was the worst i have ever had, the fish was under cooked with uncooked batter and the chips was just a lump of grease, so much grease soaked through layers and layers of paper. Ended up in the bin a waste of money.

Great fish and chips at reasonable price. The portions are very generous and flavour is lovely. Staff very friendly and polite. Will return soon.

This place is the real deal. People say harbour lights or stiens are good then they have never tried here. An absolute hidden gem. The food is pipping hot and the chips fall off your plate, the girls behind the counter are lovely and nothing is a problem. You will not leave hungry or wanting more.

Glad to see some establishments are able to offer a tasty fish and chip supper for under a tenner. Roughly 7 quid for large cod chips and curry. Sadly it is 300 miles away from where I live but I'd be chuffed it it was my local chippy

Have tried many cafes and chippies across Cornwall on my search for 10/10 but have never found better than a 7/10. So tried here about a month ago and blown away by it so much that we went again a couple of nights ago. Even though it is a 25 minute drive away it’s more than worth it. The chips are perfect, the fish was perfect and the service and atmosphere was great. Well priced as well as pretty big portions and this is coming from someone with a big appetite. have found my perfect fish and chips so will be visiting here at least once a month now.

Visitamos después de un día en el Eden Project - está a solo 5 minutos en coche de allí, y después de leer las críticas en Tripadvisor. La antigua "fish and chips", llegamos justo después de las 6 pm en un viernes y estaban prácticamente colas fuera de la puerta. Comimos en el hotel y pedimos 2 chips x pescado y patatas fritas blandas arvejas y 1 de pollo y frijoles. No raciones para niños así que pedimos un plato vacío para que mi hijo de 7 años que no tiene un apetito enorme y nosotros lo compartimos con ella. Un montón de comida para 4 de nosotros desde el 3 porciones y 13 años no pude terminar todas sus fichas (nunca sucede). Caliente directamente de la freidora, el bateador en el pescado estaba delicioso y muy crujientes, las patatas fritas nos empapamos de la sal y el vinagre en la manera. Personal muy amable y servicial y 3x más grandes comidas bebidas para menores de 25 libras. Lo recomiendo sin duda.

He estado visitando el antiguo café, como Forge veraneantes, por más de 20 años y nunca he tenido una mala comida. Ya que las niñas han estado funcionando el negocio es aún mejor. Ahora vivo localmente y continúe para conseguir mi pescado y patatas fritas. Sí, los horarios de apertura son menos generosos que donde me trasladé desde, he sido utilizada para pescar y tiendas locales chip está abierto 6 días a la semana hasta las 11 pm, pero la vieja Forge horarios de apertura están mejor que muchas de las otras tiendas chip local y son como se anuncian. Las porciones de asegurar que nunca he ido con hambre, no es algo que se puede decir de otros de la zona, y la alegre bienvenida siempre me hace sonreír. Tan pronto como entras, se pidió por su orden y por el tiempo que te dan para el contador es usualmente preparado. El único aspecto negativo es que el Forge es tan popular que la cola puede, en ocasiones, ser bastante larga. La espera vale la pena. Si visita una sola porción de patatas fritas o el completo de pescado, patatas fritas y guisantes blandos para varios de nosotros, siempre me siento valorado.

Lets start, The food is 10/10 the best in Cornwall. The staff are polite and helpful! The opening hours are a major major draw back and have left us stuck for food numerous times. The chip shop really needs to be open atleast 5 days a week. Most of the time they are on holiday and you would of driven miles to find that they are closed! Otherwise its a great chip shop and restaurant

Heard of the Old forge cafe so me and the wife called for lunch to try for ourselves. Certainly glad we did, both had fish chips and of course mushy peas and a mug of tea, took me back years the taste of times long gone loved every mouthful, didn't eat again that day, Served by two lovey chatty ladies, a must to call again if your in St Austell area search it out you won't be disappointed.

Very accommodating staff. Excellent food and very large portions. We went as a family of seven and only one managed to finish the large portions of excellent food. Thanks to all the staff

My father took me here a couple of times as a kid. Always loved it, and the food is still just as bleddy ansum! I still drop by here for a monthly treat. Friendly, chatty service and is immaculately clean, Proper chippies cooked in dripping - the way it's meant to be, plenty of salt n vinegar, light & crispy battered fish - all wrapped up in newspaper. And a traditional family-run chippy too. The only thing missing is good old bottles of Cydrax skit. :)

Nice clean cafe with wood tables and nice comfortable chairs. We found the cafe thanks to TripAdvisor and what a find. Superb fish with great crispy batter. The chip were really good the portions were far too much but so delicious that I felt cheated that I couldn't eat them all.

Recently visited on way home, absolutely brilliant experience. Fish freshly cooked, and. Chips really fantastic. Able to eat in or take away, and the served portions looked huge! Not the cheapest but very well worth the little extra, if you want the best in the area, you have to pay for it, but you will not be disappointed.

3 years on from my first review, I can still say that there is no better fish and chips in the area. I stopped after the RC show last night almost at closing time and walked away with 4 exceptional portions of hot fresh cooked fish and chips. I have eaten from almost ever F&C shop in the area and nothing comes close for portion size, value for money and taste.... Oh, and you still get real newspaper as well, not some plastic box.

Nice place nice staff but food and Value could be better. Not an amazing experience but the food was tasty and that is what matters .....

Great food, Great people, Great prices. Been going here for years they will cook everything just as you like it just ask. To clear up a few of the other comments. They have their opening times on their website and in their window. They do have a high chair. I have taken a photo not the best but who could waste time taking better. When you have this to eat. Hoping this helps clear things up a bit. Highly recommend.

Haven't been bugle chip shop for ages but it is as good as ever, everything cooked fresh the cafe is clean as a whistle staff courteous and friendly good prices for sit in and takeaway won't leave it so long to go again

Wow what a find due to the reviews on here, stunning fish & chips and not expensive and to top it off what lovely genuine people.Will certainly be top of my list next time we are in Cornwall.

We have had the same opening ours and days for the past 35year ony day we shut is a tues and a Sunday and evening we are open Monday fri and sat other that the only time we are shut and u will find us open tend everyday that is on the notice board unless we have a holiday and a notice is placed in the window many thanks bev

Yes the Old Forge cafe serves the best fish and chips for miles around but there is one substantial drawback and that is the opening hours. Variable opening hours! How disappointing if you drive in from out of Bugle only to find that they didn't feel like opening today! The owners don't live on the premises and some days they just don't bother to open, therefore it's a bit hit and miss. My advice is, if you are passing and it's open and you are hungry, fill your boots. If you have got to make a special trip to get there then be aware you may have a wasted journey and leave time to get to another chippy if it's shut!

Good service, food cooked fresh, REALLY great fish and chips - the batter is amazing. Definitely worth a visit.

Saw the fantastic reviews and thought we'd give It a go for a lunchtime treat on our holidays. Did not disappoint. Delicious fish & chips in enormous portions. Served by friendly staff and inexpensive. We had 2 Cod, 1 chips (as portions are so big), curry sauce and 2 soft drinks for £11.40 to eat in. The cod was on a par with Rick Stein's. Would defo go again. No high chairs would be my only criticism.

Not disappointed, it was wonderful.Fish and chips with mushy peas and a mug of tea - £6.80So much on the plate, could not eat it all.Best cod I have had in a long time, the batter was perfect, light, and so tasty.Chips plentiful and well cooked, not oily or dry, just right.Place busy with locals, noisy, but great fun.Sat in, chatted to the lady who runs the cafe with her daughter.Definitely be back again when in the area.

You can't beat this Place for local fish n chips the portions are great the girls are always friendly and welcoming sometimes there is a que out the door but they always take yr order the cheapest chippy around St Austell and surrounding areas

The portions sizes are great. One size fits all and is bigger than portions in other chip shops and is also tastier and cheaper. It is £1.70 for a large portion of chips and is £3.20 for Jumbo Sausage in batter and chips. Batter bits are free and home made curry sauce is 80p. Eating in is a great experiance as the family who run the Old Forge are very chatty and friendly. I would definetley say that the chips are the best in the area!

I was back in Cornwall visiting family having lived in Australia for some years and tried the "Old Forge" because a family member recommended it and said it was where the locals got their fish and chips.Like the other reviews, the friendliness and service were a pleasent surprise, but could not match the look of surprise I must have had on my face when the meal arrived.The meal was huge!!!! And not just because they'd filled the plate with chips either.I'm pleased to report that the taste was not sacrificed for volume which resulted in the best value and tasting fish and chips I have had in years.This is a small premisis and parking might not be easy in peak times but my advice is find somewhere else to park and walk there if you need to because it will be worth it.

Always will be. Biggest portions, best taste,lowest prices. Quick easy swervice cooked right in front of you. Even better as a sit down.

Visited Thursday lunchtime - was staying down the road as part of family visit to Cornwall for the week - in London I've eaten at many chippies - most of them are merely ok or below - Old Forge was excellent quality - for under a fiver I had a seriously tasty meal - chips not dry or tasting like cardboard - moist and hand-cut and beautiful with vinegar in the newspaper-wrap - fish lovely also so fresh and moist, not overdone - didn't have to wait at all just went straight in and ordered - maybe it was the time I visited (before midday) - if I'm ever in the area again I can't wait to return.

Visited here in May 2013 with my husband pleased to see the interior has been refurbished and that the fish and chips are still as good as I remember them from when I lived at Luxylan 9 years ago. Definately worth a visit. Nice to see Rex's daughter carries on his tradition of never being quiet.

Proper fish and chips here, huge portions, fresh fish, hand cut chips, just fantastic. No frills or nonsense, this is a marvelous family run business that is just about great customer service and food. If you want the real thing The Old Forge is worth the drive and you can eat in, so you will not ponk out the car! A great local atmosphere, but does get busy but waiting for a table should not be too long. No posh frocks or napkin rings, prepare yourself for a sensible fish and chip supper with a hot mug of tea and bread and butter! The locals are the people who have the nak of shutting the front door!! Enjoy you will.

This cafe is truly well known by the locals.Like myself some have been coming here for years.You will go far afield to get better value and indeed quality.Rex the grandfather has retired but his daughters and granddaughters have taken up the gauntlet and doing a gteat job. Portions are very generous.If its Fish and Chips like you had when you were a child, This is the Place. Dont expect any fancy trappings,just the best Fish & Chips in the Area.

Make sure you are hungry when you visit 'The old Forge Cafe' because this is the most generous Fish and Chips around. Dont ask for a small portion- you'll offend them! Your food comes to the table so hot, the vinegar evaporates as soon as it touches the chips. It's quirky and friendly ( nothing matches, every mug, plate, table and chair is different!) there's always a conversation being shared, by eating in customers and those queuing for their take away. You've never tasty good honest, decent Fish & Chips till you've tried The Old Forge Cafe.

Superb. A eating experience NOT to be missed. Eccentric seating arrangements But definitely worth it. Clean ,Fresh and friendly .The OLD FORGE CAFE carries on a tradition that you would be simply rude to miss!It's proper chips and proper fish.These days there is no more greater accolade. Served in a warm and friendly atmosphere WITHOUT celebrity prices.My boys absolutely love going there .So it is a must. Be Hungry though or it's a waste.

I can only but echo the top review, forget the rick steins tourist trade rubbish as they charged the earth for a portion of fish and chips out of tourist season and only give a very small portion of chips. It's fried potatoes for god sake and doesnt cost that much money to be charging those prices (£8.95 ish or whatever but very near) for fish and chips, they are just rip off merchants who have no interest in looking after local trade. Anyway rant over about Rick steins.On to the Old forge cafe in bugle, this place ive been going to since i was a kid and i still like to visit occaisonally when im in the area. The fish is a nice big size and a nice big mountain of chips, you may find a few bones in the fish though. The price is very good value for money and you will come away absolutely stuffed, you wont need anything else to eat for a long time.The other thing i like about this place is the customer service, you wont find a happier and friendlier place. Run by a proper cornish family who have a very good reputation with the local people in Roche. On my last visit i saw other people chatting to others across the room, it was almost like the cafe was a social hub of the villiage. Used to be run by Rex (a lovely, jolly bloke, always chatting to his customers) now has been taken over by his daughter, who i might add is just as friendly and nice and chatty as her father (a chip off the old block lol). But Rex does pop in from time to time. I have lived in cornwall for most of my life and i honestly can say i havent had better fish and chips than this one, YET!!. Give it a visit, you'll be glad you did.By the way all food is cooked fresh to order and if its busy you may be waiting a while but it's worth it.

Forget Rick Steins, Harry Ramsdens or any other such celebrity. For the freshest most traditional fish and chips come to the old chippy in Bugle.The Old Forge is a small cafe in the middle of the village. I admit you may find the seating arrangements a little excentric with formica tables and plastic chairs. You may even share a table with complete strangers! If you can get a table. But the plate of fish and chips will be piping hot and so full, the chips will be falling off the plate. I get a takeaway, and find you won't get a bigger portion for less money anywhere. The food is excellent and about the only place left that will wrap them up in newspaper. Be prepared to wait at busy times... Opening times vary. I think they are closed on Tue-Thur evenings.
