Avoid! Rude - NOT dog friendly despite being advertised as “Dogs very welcome” We booked a table for around 18 of us, so this visit would have been very profitable for the owners however I have never had so much a terrible experience eating out. We had a family get together to lay to rest family members so as you can imagine this was a day to remember and it was lovely to get together family from up and down the country. We agreed on the pub weeks before and pre ordered as requested being such a large table. On the pub website they advertise that “Dogs are very welcome” with their doggy dining area, so naturally a few family members brought dogs. Initially we sat outside which we were informed that they do not serve food outside and we were not aloud to collect the food and take it out ourselves which we said was fine. They then said that we could split the party up for some to sit in the dining area for dogs, again totally fine. When we actually came to sit one of the owners was clearly very frustrated and the other owner commented “Don’t know why we don’t just ban F***ing dogs” whist stomping around the pub. He then proceeded to glare at us the entire time we were there. Regards to the food - very average pub food.

We tend to pop into this place on our way to pick up a takeaway and it's always really good. Located nicely on the edge of the moors it can make a good stopping off point for a walk in the countryside as well. They have a great range of drinks which are really well kept especially the bitters. it can get busy but you can usually find a table and enjoy a cracking atmosphere and a real fire in winter. In the summer there is a nice beer garden to the rear and lots of free parking either on the road or on their carpark. The service is fast and friendly as well.

Today was our wedding aniversary... 26 years.....and of being together 29. On the 19th of March 1995 I had my first date with my Ann at this pub and spent a captivating few hours together on the start of our big adventures..... So fast forward to today, we thought today we will have our nostalgic lunch on the day, hence how I come to write the review. It is an amazing clean, smart and professional establishment giving you the feeling of being welcome as soon as you walk in. The staff were more than friendly, lots of smiles, courteous and professional.... (Nobody knew it was a sneaky special time for us) so that the welcome was genuine! The menu was a great mix of traditional classics, grills etc. This time we both chose the cheese and onion pie, chips and garden peas....Estrella Damm on draught for me and Somersby cider for Mrs B......I do a damn fine cheese and onion pie when I do, but this was the best we ever had.....(and we have had some believe me!) ...simply amazing, so can happily recommend without hesitation. The Inn is ideal for walkers to stop off visiting the wide moors, Rivington Pike, Winterhill and so on and so forth. Happily we live quite local in Barrow Bridge so a nice walk to the place. My opinion, for what it's worth, one of the best inn, food offerings for many, many miles, perfectly priced ensuring we will be back working our way through the excellent menu one dish at a time.....

We made a recent return visit to Bob's Smithy, meeting up with friends. It's a very pleasant dining experience, more like a restaurant than a pub. All the staff were very attentive, friendly and helpful. There is a good choice of beers and plenty of options on the menu. Our meals were served at the same time, freshly cooked and were delicious. Good value for money too.

We visited as a family group to celebrate a birthday. When we booked we planned on there being 8 of us, but unfortunately my son found out he had to work at the last minute. We didn’t think one person missing from the table would cause a problem. But apparently it did! After the seven of us were seated the owner/manager/ (Lorraine?) came over to our table and very curtly and rudely told us that next time, if we have members of the party unable to attend, can we please inform them as they would have sat us at a smaller table and made room for another party in the pub. This was done very loudly to our entire table and it felt like we were small school children being told off by the head mistress! I would add though that the young man who served us was extremely polite, friendly and helpful. The food was good, why the pub has decided to title itself a “gastro pub” is beyond me - pies, chips and roast dinners doesn’t make a gastro pub in my opinion, this is just normal pub grub. Would think twice before visiting again.

We were going to go to the newly refurbished Blundell Arms but decided to call in to The BOb Smithy. So glad we did. I had the plate steak pie with mash and amazing veg selection, very reasonably priced. Hubby had steak pudding with chips and veg. It was lovely, hot and tasty. The roasts on Sundays looks delicious so will be trying that next time. They also do a selection of cask ales if you like that and the interior was lovely and modern.

We are lucky to have Bob Smithy not far from where we live and often use it as our first stop on a walk for real ale and sometimes food. We’ve dined twice in the last 4 weeks and the food is delicious, menu choice is really good, hearty pub classics and a lovely specials menu. Last night we had fish and chips and a pork chop off the specials menu. The food was served piping hot and extremely tasty. The real ale is kept really well and service is good. We enjoy going, it always feels warm and cosy.

The positives - this inn/restaurant is modern and aesthetically pleasing. The staff are attentive. The prices are moderate. The negatives - we chose Sunday Roast lunch (beef) which was disappointing. This meal lacked vegetables and had limited gravy. Also the Yorkshire Pudding was ‘dreadful’. We usually visit our local carveries for Sunday Lunch, including the Toby Restaurants which are very good value for money offering a variety of vegetables and choices of 3 cuts of meat. No so at this establishment. If you want a really good Sunday roast - don’t go here. In fairness, perhaps had we chosen a different meal this could have been better. We MAY visit again some time in the future but it definitely won’t be for a Sunday Roast.

Listed on the Bolton evening news as ‘dog friendly’ This evening, I decided to suggest this location for dinner and fetch my partners family. As we have heard nothing but positive things about it. Also, as a little girl I attended here multiple times and it was classed as our local. No problems with the food/drinks. But certainly a problem with the way the staff dealt with a particular ‘issue’. We had decided to bring our family dog (who for a pup- is very well behaved). We made sure to be seated in the very far corner, away from the rest of the customers. Our pup was on a lead that didn’t allow him to reach out to even 2 meters. We later had bar staff come over to tell us that we need to keep him on a shorter lead as it could be a trip hazard to others. Understandably, we shortened his lead and kept him even closer. Where we know he would definitely cause no obstruction. Mid way through our meal. They had decided to come over to us again. Repeating what they had previously said. Though this time believed it was fine to grab our dog by the lead and drag him back without any permission. We asked staff “please don’t do that”. They proceeded to state how much of an inconvenience him being there was and not leave us to continue our meal. And if anyone could have seen how much we kept our pup under control, they would understand. He would not have caused anyone to trip as he was literally by our sides. And even if he was to slightly wonder off. Or anyone was to come near. We would have made sure he was not in the way what so ever. We even had other customers come over to say how dramatic the staff were being. How unnecessary it was for them to come over multiple times. Not happy with the way things were handled. Don’t think we will be coming back any time soon.

A beautiful, delicious meal was spoilt today by the ambience of the place. Where we were sitting was more like a working men's club than a restaurant. 6 men, (two of whom were very, very loud) and a women, occupying two tables, were shouting over to each other the whole time. They appeared to be drinking only although they could have eaten before we arrived. It was so bad I couldn't concentrate on the menu and my husband and I could hardly hear each other speak throughout the meal. I would have asked to move but we were a late booking and it appeared to be the only table for two available. They were obviously regulars and were well known in the place as both the landlady & landlord kept sitting with them and various other guests acknowledged them. It was such a shame as the meal was fabulous but spoilt by the selfishness of these people. Was thinking of going to the Quiz night but think I'll give it a miss.

Between 1300-1400 we rang and asked if we could make a reservation for three adults and a 6month old. We were told 1500 but they would need the table back at 1745 we turned up around 10 minutes early. From the get go the place was, “off” standing at the bar with a pram, the staff seemed purposefully ignorant to us. Not so much as a “have you booked a table, I’ll be with you in a minute” - it was like we were in the way although there was no one at the bar. I had to ask the barmaid “is this where you go if you’ve booked a table?” As it wasn’t obvious and noone wanted to help. We were then seated. On the table was a chalkboard with 1500-1745 on it. In the far corner of the restaurant I spotted a stack of high chairs. I positioned the pram there and then proceeded in taking a high chair (note I had no issue doing this). For some reason though the owner thought it would be best to start on her not so merry way of jibe like comments “if you had told us you needed a high chair we would have had one out already”. I hadn’t said a thing so why this was necessary I don’t know. Starters were really nice, delivered promptly and all near enough at the same time and as were the mains. The wait staff and food was great and attentive and that is the only reason why this is two star. The time is 1722 and whilst we were finishing up our drinks the owner came over and I couldn’t believe it “can you just move that menu so I can see that chalkboard…. (Mumbles as walking away) nearly 1745” then over the next 3 or so minutes she keeps returning to the table collecting one item at a time whilst checking her watch. Even as we were leaving comments were being made and it was before 1740. We will not be returning the owner/management has a disgusting attitude. Politeness costs nothing. I’d have rather have had an awful meal but hospitable service then what we had on Saturday.

Bob's was recommended by a friend and when we finally found ourselves without the kids for a night, we thought we'd give it a go. This is a great place, the atmosphere is lively and social with a mix of age ranges, families and couples. Despite being busy with those having a drink in the beer garden (warm and sunny night) as well as a near full restaurant, the staff were efficient and polite. We'd been given a 2hr slot for dinner, which was more than enough as the food was served after about 20 mins. In summary, the food was excellent - we are happy to recommend the Cumberland Sausage and steak pie. I always have a local beer if available, so it was good to see Flat Cap from Bank Top Brewery on tap. The food was tasty and well seasoned. Unusually, the veg was not overcooked. We had a short walk after dinner to take in the stunning views towards the Welsh Hills. Well done Bob's, we'll be returning.

This pub advertises as dog friendly and couldn’t be further from the truth … dog just about tolerated so many rules can’t sit there … move to a small area where most tables were set for dining with few seats for non diners … but fortunately I did get one or I would have had to stand for an hour ….and dog me st lie on floor and not have feet on my knee ( not the furniture I would agree with that ) .,, it would be much better if they just said no dogs. Even the neighbouring tables shared raised eyebrows when I was told off ..,, we were neither dirty or wet .,,,, as a person on her own I was unable to order further drinks shards of the meal as it would have meant taking my dog on the delux carpet that surrounds the bar area …. I really didn’t enjoy the experience. Tried to set up a tab to pay for a drink before meal but as was one hour ten minutes early was forced to pay for the drink up front what a way to treat customers .. it was embarrassing in the bar and implied a lack of trust in their customers and left me feeling very uncomfortable as a customer … I wonder if a bloke would have been treated so abruptly ? The woman even apologised to other customers on the next table for sitting them in this area … speaks volumes …. Should the dining experience not be the same no matter where you sit ! At this stage had I not got family travelling to meet me I would have left Beer served (poretti) was flat and had a perfumed taste … not at all like peroni taste a like as I was sold when I ordered Smokers area right outside the window in the tiny area we were forced to dine in due to dog — so had the unpleasant wafting of cigarette smoke during our meal … The young staff serving the meals were a lot more polite and pleasant than their older counterparts The meal selection was quite good and value good. Starter were an ok portion size - the main a bit skinny but to be fair the food was delicious There are many pubs and indeed restaurants that are dog friendly sly and trust me I won’t be back here not even for a drink … Sent from my iPhone

The standards of the food and service at the Smithy are consistently high. In addition, there is an excellent choice of ‘proper’ ale, which is extremely well kept. My personal favourite is Timothy Taylors’ ‘Boltmaker’.

Had a bit of time to kill so popped in for a brew and a cake. Not a bad selection but the chocolate cake was a little dry and needed some cream. However they only do clotted cream not pouring cream. The brew was nice, once I'd exchanged the cup with lipstick on. Mistakes happen and its how they deal with them that's important. Not a bad place to relax.

Booked table, and when we had arrived they asked if we wanted child's area as we had 3 children...this was great as it keep them entertain until their food came.. Service was great by all staff we interacted with, especially Sarah and Mia.. we wasn't rushed to leave and it was very relaxing. Was a little let down by the food, wouldn't necessary have a carvery again within the week..but the kids meals where great.

I visited the watergate Toby carvery on wednesday 7th as a family, 4 adults and 2 children. We were visiting as a treat for my granddaughters birthday and the whole process was terrible. Myself being coeliac was left unable to eat as there wasn’t food available at the carvery, eg there were few carrots, what was there was dry and crispy and going brown. The leek and cabbage mix was the same, very little in the dish and it was dry and going brown. The staff did do me some cauliflower however that was brought out to the table before any food haad been brought to the children and we didn’t want to get food and start to eat before the children had their food. That cauliflower wasn’t drained well but regardless it was cold soon. my granddaughter and grandson both wanted garlic bread starter, apparently you didn’t have any. They had to then settle for tomato soup which they didn’t really want but don’t like prawns so had no other option. their soup was brought out and the brown my grandaughter had was filled, my grand sons was half ful, of course being 10 years old he wasn’t understanding why the difference, the cost was the same. 5 of us got a hot chocolate and 1 of us had a Pepsi however due to the next issues 2 of us ended up with our hot chocolate drinks being cold 3 of us adults went for the carvery but this is when I could not even get food for my plate However I spoke to the manager on the day and was much less than satisfied The manager was very rude and tried to blame me for there being no fresh veg available, he declared that we shou,d have warned them that we would want fresh vegetables, in 40 years of going to such places I’ve never been told I need to pre book there being vegetables available. Anyone going to a carvery would expect there to be basic vegetables. Carrots, peas and so on The 2 staff members serving behind the carvery counter were also pretty rude. The chef complained that he only has one pair of hands. The turkey had run out but there was a small amount on my plate, I had beef too but they needed more turkey out and while I was stood there with food on my plate as in the bit of turkey and the beef, I was then told the fresh turkey would be out in 10 minutes. No apology, no offer to keep my food warm. Instead I was left stood there having to partly eat while waiting as it was going cold. I had requested fresh roasts with dripping as there were none out at all. I then asked where the fresh veg was and it’s clear I was an inconvenience. In the end I went to sit down, gave them the plate back and saw my family had all started to eat but not one of them had eaten more than half their food. They were not happy with the food. When I complained to the manager that I then no longer even wanted to eat as I would have had the 5 of them sitting waiting for me to finish which wasn’t acceptable for a family meal and we had pre booked tickets to take the children to a local place where they have inflatables so we couldn’t keep hanging around. The manager as mentioned above tried to put this back on me saying we should have pre booked fresh veg to be available. One look at your reviews on trip advisor and Google shows this is certainly not an isolated complaint I certainly gave the manager my thoughts on the treatment we received and I shouldn’t have paid. Totally disgusted with the treatment and service however the young lady who took our drink order and answered our questions did her best. I complained further via X and was contacted by the General Manager Sophie on 12th August. I was unable to respond straight away due to health problems however this should not be an issue and I replied on 26th August asking for more details about the so called investigation into the issues I raised, I want accountability not just offered a voucher for a unknown amount, could have been a £10 voucher for all knew which would leave me with further outgoings. The day was ruined for 6 members of my family, this was the first time I’d been able to take 5 family members and myself for a meal and was left so disappointed, as were every one of us. I have had no response to this email “ Hi Sophie Sorry fir the delay responding, I have thought about your offer however perhaps you could give more detail? You mention other restaurants we could attend however as a party of 6 and only one car in the family this causes difficulties as we are limited to where we can travel as my daughter & son in law had to ferry us about making 4 different journeys to get us all to the carvery in the first place and also my son may have to bring my 2 year old granddaughter if his partner is working so not sure where that would leave us however if we were to travel this would incur further costs for myself to make sure we can all get to any destination as my family are on low incomes. It was the first time we had all gone to somewhere together so was a rare treat. Also I’d like to add that we had pre booked a session at air bounce as part of the treat fir my granddaughters birthday so not only did I not get to eat in the carvery but I could not then eat until I returned home. The mood of the family by this point had been affected to the point no one really enjoyed the rest of the day. You say you would be investigating the issues raised, have you done that yet and if so may I ask the outcome?”
