Old Engine House in Torbay

ANPR car park with £100 fine. We particularly liked the half finished joist installation completed with exposed hangars, ruining what would have been an ok 70's period ceiling piece. Certainly not what I expected looking at the high Tripadvisor rating. Is this really a good place to go in Torquay? We had a quick pint and then left. Complete dump. We certainly didn't want to eat there looking at the state of the decor and the half finished roof. Either tear it down or finish it properly! You really need to up your game.

Loved it! The Carvery was lovely. Served by Phil who makes you feel welcome & tries to accommodate everyone's likes & dislikes. His wife Beccy is very helpful & likes to make sure that everything is OK for you so you can enjoy your meal. The place has a great atmosphere & is never empty. So that for me says it all. A great place to eat.

The carvery in here is great, will definitely be coming back a lot.

Didn't like initial table we were given as by toilets and fire escape which kept being opened so very drafty after we were moved much happier and can't fault the carvery the Server was lovely all food especially meats, beef dripping roasties,parsnips& yorkshires all amazing will return next time in area

My wife and I dined at the Old Engine House on Friday 18th October and were served by Owen, we were so impressed by his customer service, that we decided to visit again today. We were served by Owen again and he was so good that we just had to leave a review, Owen is a credit to the business and I am sure that he will be one of the management shortly, if you can hang on to him! Thanks so much for a great time especially on my wife's birthday!

Tuff old Beef, Hard Veg, That covers it other than arrived at 11.30 only to find almost all tables Reserved , Had my food then went out all tables still reserved how ridiculous had to sit out the way for no reason, I only live up the road but things must change before I return,

Great food and great service, the staff really go out of their way to look after you. The carvery is always outstanding and love the new Yorkshire puddings, breakfast is also amazing! Would 100% recommend!!!

Brilliant carvery, very friendly staff, would definitely recommend and come back even when the carvery is back to full price it is still very reasonable for how generous the plate sizes and delicious the food is.

Went last Thursday, had booked a table, stood waiting for 17 minutes to be greeted at the desk inside the door, totally ignored so we left! There were queues on both sides of the bar, one member of staff serving, customers were all looking fed up. This place needs to do better! **Received a comment back to email them directly, which I did straight away, for them to totally ignore it**

Service man didn't even offer us a table ,as he was concentrating the big party that was in there and food was chewy ,no peas and the chef was rude,hard carrots ,will be not attending again ,very disappointed as was looking forward to it all day.coke was 3.75 for a half pint.

Visited yesterday to celebrate my Dad's 80th birthday. The staff went out of their way to make it special for my Dad. The food was yummy, the service was quick, and the staff were all lovely. A big Thank you to the staff and the manager for being so lovely to my Dad yesterday.

My first visit but very impressed. Staff very polite, efficient and helpful. Excellent value for money.

We are here on holiday and this is the best Sunday Cavery we have had. The staff were really helpful as someone on our table struggles with steps so carried there plate for him. And the atmosphere of the place is great everyones chatty and helpful and lovley decor.

Always a poor experience. Only thing this place has going for it is it shows Sky and has a car park. Always always a que and never enough staff to serve them. The ones who are there don’t seem bothered at all. Que for food till and bar today and the manager in a flat cap and dirty trainers is stood by the door on his phone. Awful as always

Pub manager was too busy on her phone to find us a seat after half an hour we drank our drinks and left shocking behaviour. There was plenty of empty seats around, but nobody was interested in seating us

Excellent value carvery. We got one large carvery, one medium, pigs in blankets, a pint and a J20... All for under £25. Large selection of vegetables, etc. Very happy with the food. Will recommend to friends! The only downside was the lady at the till who really seemed like she didn't want to be there. Maybe just a bad day, which I can relate to.

While on holiday we Tried a king green pub for the first time in a while ...... myself and my husbad both had carverys there was a good chiloce of veg and rost, parsnips the veg was fresh and you could tast the flavouring of the vegitables ....very tasty would recomend very good price too lovely exspirance .....

Carvery £7.00. ,on holiday in Torquay , best and cheapest meal we have had this week. Place a bit noisy but that's just the great chef, ha ha. Would recommend you to try it.

Really enjoyed our meal here. A great lad called Owen, was really helpful and explained all the offers to us. Only couple of things were the toilets need an upgrade and the corn on the cob was very "soggy" and soft. The rest of the food was really nice and enjoyed the slight crisp to the fries

Went to pick up a couple from the pub but that changed so I left I was there for 20 mins but received a parking fine from euro car parks saying I had parked without authorisation. All our family have used this pub on a number of occasions, Not any more if this is the way we are treated. So be very aware and careful of this venue

A good choice of food and drinks. It was extremely busy today so we were glad we had booked a table. A nice carvery with plenty of vegetables that were well cooked. A small choice of vegetarian food but unable to comment on that as none of us tried it. All of our food was very good and the service was friendly and reasonably quick considering the amount of people there. Clean toilets. Parking was a bit limited so best to get in early for a space. Desert looked good it not enough room to try any unfortunately. We will definitely be returning to try some of the other items on the reasonably priced menu. Stopped off for coffee and a snack today. Shared 3 items from the starters menu. All very good and a reasonable price with very quick service.

Lovely food, staff really helpful and on the ball. Food was fresh and tasty. Veg not over cooked. Highly recommend.

Stayed the evening in Torquay so popped in for some dinner. Firstly staff were very welcoming,from ordering food to it coming out was only about 15 mins. Food was all lovely and hot. We enjoyed it so much that we popped back for breakfast this morning, again very good food. Will definitely be back the next time we stay in the area. The pub is very clean, and a very welcoming atmosphere.

Went for the carvery as an offer is on at the moment £7 regular carvery and £2 pint lager . Very pleased with the whole meal . Decent amount of tender meat Gammon , beef or turkey on offer . Lots choice of all fresh veg including cauliflower cheese , red cabbage and carrots . Choice of mash , roast or boiled new potatoes. Yorkshire pudding and choice of onion or plain gravy . Staff were pleasant and asked if we enjoyed our meal . It was all delicious and served hot . Lots posters to remind about the parking system And you put your reg into a pad at the bar

Absolutely awful They advertise they are dog friendly .Staff were rude about our dog and the lady waitress was very rude We asked where they would like us to seat but made it obvious we were not welcome with our furry friend Dont go

Unfortunately the glass above the carvery was dirty and dusty the potatoes for the mash and roast potatoes are clearly frozen The chap carving was friendly and joyful but unfortunately the food let's this establishment down

Excellent... great food, not afraid to cut the meat, like some places I know. One thing to look out for is if parking in the rear car park, mind the parking ticket vultures if you forget to register your number plate. I was parked in a disabled spot with my badge, just received £100 ticket.. which will be appealed.

Great carvery and on a week day.

As of 30th August, the Old Engine House refused my Christmas Day dinner booking for 11 people, spread over 2 tables, at a time convenient to them. Christmas Day bookings had only gone live 3 days prior, and the pub themselves confirmed that they were not fully booked. I would like to know why was my booking, totally nearly £600, declined? Their customer service is awful (especially from the manager), and their staff refuse to answer the telephone. Furthermore, my personal telephone number had been attached to a strangers booking. A worrying use of their customer’s data! The Old Engine House has tried to silence me by blocking me from their Facebook page. I advise people to take their hard earned money elsewhere. Bah humbug springs to mind!

We met up for a family get together. The carvery was great so too was the fish and chips. The staff were friendly and chatty. Thoroughly enjoyed our evening there

I went for my sons birthday it was a great place gooood food and very friendly service and the staff were delightful

We booked for lunch and had two carveries. Decided to have beef as it looked nice. The meat was soooo tough that we had great difficulty even cutting it with a normal dining knife. So chewy ....we couldn't get it down. My table companion totally left theirs in fear of chocking !!! In the end our meal consisted of veg only !! Decided to try a dessert but the selection very poor if you don't eat chocolate (which I don't) Settled with a coffee and they both came....Luke warm !! Can't even get a coffee right !! VERY POOR ALL ROUND. PLACE ALSO SHABBY AND REQUIRES UPDATING.....TOILETS INCLUDED.

Food always tastes good here, but be wary if ordering from the app (or table) rather than going to the bar. Last 3 times we have been, the drinks orders never arrived - I've had to go up to the counter they then apologise and there's a stream of tickets from the printer showing drinks ordered via the app that haven't been noticed or looked at. Apart from that, all good!

Fantastic food but would think twice about drinking very expensive

Update have raised this to 5 stars...last 2 weekends we have gone for breakfast here....fabulous breakfast, well worth the money and as I am not overly keen on a normal breakfast due to hating beans/tomatoes etc they do a sausage and egg muffin and a bacon and egg muffin which are very cheap to buy but so tasty. This week we ordered one of each to take away for our dogs to enjoy a breakfast too...this is our new favourite breakfast place....thoroughly.recommended (Original Post 1 star :Arrived on a Tuesday at 10am.for breakfast only to find they don't open until 11am. Arrived on Friday at 11.02 am for breakfast only to find that they open at 9 Fri/sat/sun)/

Absolutely amazing Becky and Carly was fantastic the chef even made my 1yr old son's food early so it was perfect temp they are fantastic definitely worth a visit we will be back

Food is average, carvery food has 3 different meats and each meat has its own carving knife and the chef used the same knife to cut all three meats. The was not that hot, seems like it's been out all day. Don't recommend going.

Best place to get a cheap, good quality roast dinner, cheaper than Toby Carvery!! All the meats were cooked exceptionally well and were tender. The veg was also really good with a lot of taste to it. There is a good vibe from the staff and I would advise taking their recommendations on the deserts. They do a desert for 2 that is a massive ice cream with loads on top at also a good price. The venue has free parking and is close to Torbay Hospital and also has a Lidl opposite for shopping trips. Clean and tidy establishment that is part of a chain of restaurants. Will definitely be returning.

I came with friends tonight as always great Carvery one of my friends ordered a cheese burger but was called away shortly after order placed on an emergency so we explained to mangement and they put the burger on hold my friend was back within 15 minutes and his burger was delivered 5 minutes after fresh and succulent the management were superb and great customer service we love the Engine House. Experience was really good staff friendly food was cooked well with plenty of choice.

Please be careful if you eat here as I got fined £100 for parking! Whilst parking in the grounds of this premises to go for a carvery! The food was OK but not great the staff were friendly but they saw me park and never said anything. So just please be careful or it will be an expensive meal for you as it was for me.I honestly didn't know I couldn't park in the grounds.

Good beer, lovely staff, but let down by the steaks, all over cooked (asked for medium rare) Most of it inedible, would have sent it back but were celebrating a friends birthday. Took it home in a serviette, dog enjoyed it. Would go back but definitely not for food.

Had our father's wake there on late Thursday afternoon. Food was spot on hot on time plenty too go round,very professional staff to deal with, helpful nice. Would definitely recommend this venue as very close to torquay crematorium and can cater for a large party.

Yummy, I/we will definitely return. Beef roast was fantastic. Vegetables were cooked well and full of flavour. Word of advice: book in advance or avoid 12.30 to 14.00. Walk-in service is available, if there is a free table....a very popular place!

Booked a table here for Sunday carvery while on holiday food was great and tasty and the atmosphere and staff were really nice 🙂

Was a tiny bit busy to be honest with kids:( But putting that aside I’d defiantly book because it’s busy a lot of the time. Roast is INSANE though!!😍😍😍 They take blue light cards also!

Roast was disappointing. Hard bland cauli cheese and hard spouts. Very dry roast pots and red cabbage. like been re heated. Barman was extremely polite and helped full in finding table. But no one came to clear it or wipe it for us. Parsnips Yorkshire pud delicious. But won't be returning. Ty.

My wife and i quite often seek out a Greene King establishment when we are away from home and this place is certainly one of the best that we have visited,friendly helpful staff and a top notch Carvery all at an affordable price. I would certainly recommend pre-booking as it appears to be a very popular place,i've no idea why the person in a previous review complained about not seeing the car parking rules as there are plenty of signs telling you that you have to simply sign in at the bar on arrival.

Only real ale was Abbott which was a bit heavy for an afternoon wake (for a previous landlord who loved his real ale).

Absolutely fantastic would travel the 4 hours again just to eat here. The chef/server really made our day. We love a carvery. Especially if we go out for one, i can safely say, and by far, this was the best one we have enjoyed ina long time

Had a lovely cheap meal with drinks, to find out that after a week we had a fine for parking on the carpark, so my dad rang the pub and they said its a private carpark and you had to sign in with your registration number and nobody told us this plus you don't expect to go to a pub and expect to sign in, so next time you visit this pub sign in somewhere, we don't even know where to sign in and nobody mentioned signing in staff etc. We were on our holiday. We won't be returning

Best carvery we have ever had. I never eat beef normally, but tried my wife's beef and it was so tender and delicious. All the veg was hot and perfectly cooked. I had the equally perfect Turkey.

We were too late for breakfast and just ordered some small plates to share snd drinks. Quite a wait for drinks which came with ice despite specifically asking for no ice . The food was okay but no sour cream dip available with garlic mushrooms and no alternative offered . Drinks seemed expensive compared to other Greene King pubs we've used recently but could be due to location

Very professional, friendly service. We didn't book but were looked after immediately and given a seat suitable for us and our dog. We both had a carvery which was very nice, unfortunately we had a bit over and that wasn't a problem either because the kind waitress got us a box to put the leftovers in. Great service, superb food and brilliant value for money plus a lovely atmosphere. Highly recommended many thanks.

Visited here a few times while staying in the area, food and service were always great and wait times for food short. Very reasonable prices too. Never too busy or noisy so makes for a nice relaxing meal.

Girl who took our order lack a little in customer service quality. Meal was ok potatoes a little burnt. When it came to using toilets they were disgustingly filthy urine and toilet paper over floor. A member of staff was in the toilets didn’t even smile. Come on at 3 pm the place was not busy why not clean up the loos.

On our recent trip to devon we made a late reservation for a table of 11 and spoke to a lovely gentleman on the phone who said it wouldn't be a problem and managed to accomdate us. On arrival, we were promptly welcomed and shown our table and placed our order on the app. We received our drinks and carvery slips quickly and the rest of the food came out quickly after. The food was lovely and hot, the wait staff was attentive and regularly checked in and nothing was a problem for anyone to help with. Cannot praise or recommend enough.

It has everything you would expect from Greene King chain of pubs. Only had the carvery but fresh and tasty.
