The pub was very busy, But friendly staff and lovely food, Definitely will return

First time we have been here,was not disappointed,I had the carvery and my husband had fish and chips, couldn't fault it,it was lovely.Good service, friendly staff good value for money, plus it is dog friendly.We will be returning.

ordered carvery. all veg was over done and potoes were burnt. upon arrival staff were friendly. but when we got meal and we sat down to eat I found it barely edible. manager tried saying it's becuase they were cooked in beef fat amd got a bit narky.. but they were burnt even if cooked in that they were like rocks and had a horrible burnt taste I showed the server food and the veg which was like baby food she apologised and even agreed it was burnt and all over cooked. gammon meat had a funny twang. I did request refund for my meal.. I've never ever had to leave my food uneaten before anywhere. so this was a first! we must of just gone on a bad day. Real shame.the man who served us at the carvery was brilliant a real happy man. drinks where fine.

So good Joe on the carvery was so great what a joker! the vegetarian option was really tasty, service was good and great music too.

Arrived for a lunch, parked in back parking, went through back doors to booked table. Food was good, but no one told us you had to register your Vehicle on system. Large crowd that day, so didn’t see machine when paying for lunch. Have now received a Fine, 3 x the price of our lunch bill. Will not be returning or recommending this Pub.

We visited here whilst on holiday in Torquay. Booking online was straightforward, and we were seated in good time when we arrived. Staff were mostly friendly and efficient. Children had plenty of options to choose from, and their carvery was one of the best we've had. The food was fresh, but the condiments were mostly empty and the place they sat was a mess. It would help to have the food labelled properly just in case people have food allergies or preferences as it was a little confusing. The drinks were a fair price too but the person who took our order behind the bar seemed a little lackluster, and I had to repeat a few things on the order. I'm hard of hearing and they were very quiet which made it difficult to communicate in a busy place. The overall atmosphere was ok, we were in a booth which actually suited us as it dampened the overall noise.

Come here a lot with friends and family. Came today with a friend. Ordered 2 ultimate mix grills everything on the plate was fine but the steaks were very salty too the point I couldn’t even eat it. My friends steak was over cooked and very salty. We didn’t receive a check back on our food. Otherwise would have sent it back. The experience hasn’t put me off as this is the first bad meal we’ve had since coming here.

Wouldn't know if their food, service or atmosphere is good as couldn't even get a call back to book! Ringing All day Friday , Saturday to book a BIG table for Sunday lunch . Get an email today asking how my visit was ? Here's a tip . Answer your phones, reply to emails how are people supposed to book?

Looked at alot of choice of Carvery restaurants in the area and im so please to had found this place, staff were very friendly and the food tasty and great value for money.

Firstly, we were kept waiting at the door for about 10mins without any acknowledgment or apology. Seating location was as requested. Bar service was ok. Food was not the best. The carvery meat was dry and the yorkshire puddings had been sat there for hours along with the pigs n blankets which were shivelled up (paid extra for these too!). Fish and chips was ok but batter was overcooked. Curry was ok. Waited at the bar at the end to pay and was ignored for about 5mins before someone decided to serve me. Wont be returning in a hurry!

First time visiting yesterday. We both decided to try the carvery and we weren't disappointed. The food was excellent well cooked, hot and tasty. OK so we had to wait a little while to order our food as there was only one staff member at the bar to do this but there were two parties occurring and the staff themselves were busy taking food out. Staff were all pleasant and welcoming. We will definitely be returning.

Excellent service at the bar and the carvery is fabulous. We go at least 2 or 3 times a month and thoroughly enjoy the food which is well cooked and there is plenty of variety on the vegetables front.

Good selection of beer etc but everything on top of you.not a great deal of room.

The food was really bad the roast was all burnt and if I wanted a microwave pizza I would of had it at my house the . The bar lady was miserable. The best thing was the glass of coke never going there again

Carver was disrespectful towards us as we asked if they had any fresh roast potatoes- the ones on display were hard, very dry and burnt- basically said that how's they are done and take it or leave it.

Visited two days ago and we were both disappointed. We went for the Carvery and chose beef which was impossible to cut and even more impossible to chew! There was a good variety of hot vegetables. Although the staff were pleasant we were disappointed with the meal and won't be returning

We visited on a weekday lunchtime, there was only one poor chap serving, so the wait to place our order and get drinks was considerable. The carvery was okay but nothing more. I think we’ll stick to table service places in future.

The roast beef on the carvery was as tough as old boots this Sunday was unable to cut it and full of gristle, last time we had a carvery about 4 weeks ago it was ok .

What a fantastic lunch. We have been here several times but never left a review, but I think I should. The service was outstanding, friendly staff, knowledgeable regarding gluten free food and happy.

1st time at this place, tried the carvery. 3 lots of meat, plenty of vegetables and my favourite, mashed potatoes. I think the veg section could do with someone just stirring the pots to stop the food drying out? Other than that will be paying a 2nd visit to this pub. Staff did enquire if everything was satisfactory as we were eating, which is good service. PS. There is another menu besides the carvery, plenty of choices.

We went to celebrate an Anniversary. The servery was strewn with food across the ledge leaving no place to put our- plates whilst serving our vegetables. I would describe it as the presentation of a Deathday party (Harry Potter) The sauces were all empty. Eating our food was a major work out, the knives were not sharp enough to cut through the meet(beef) Chewing the food was nigh on impossible The vegetables were mostly cold and undercooked in parts. The beer (John Smiths) was flat and old as if it was out of date or left in the pipes for too long. All in the meal was not a success and we will not be returning. I would recommend staff retraining.

Enjoyed a nice mid-week carvery at lunchtime. The meat was delicious, the veg was ready for replenishing, but after a stir it was ok, potatoes tasted better than they looked and all full of flavour. Downside was the service, 1 person on bar, 1 on food, 1 cleaning tables. Had to queue to order food and at one point staff saw the queue and went on break, where the clearer began to chat. That left 1 person who was pleasant and apologetic - didn't see name, but blonde with accent. Dessert was delicious lava cookie, but the 'build your own mania' was already made, so slight false advertising. It was essentially Ice cream with choice of toppings.

We came to the engine house tonight for the first time in over a year, me, my partner and our 2 young children. Food was really good but I have to say our waitress was really lovely. I asked for her name to praise her. She was called Becky, we came in just before 7 and she was just so lovely, helpful and happy . A truly great waitress. We are often here for lunch, never disappointed, the beef is always delicious, staff friendly and helpful, we have tried many Carvery’s round Torbay but for sheer value for money we always come back to the Engine House, very, very highly recommended.

Me and my partner come here often mainly for the carvery. It has always been perfect and we never have any issues with the food or the restaurant. Definitely one of our favourite places to go and we will continue coming back here.

Really good restaurant. Varied menu and carvery smells amazing but I had mixed grill instead. Steak cooked well as was it all. Quick service and doesn't break the bank. Fed 5 of us with drinks and dessert for just over a ton. Came out full! Good value. Better food than hungry horse. Will def go again.

The booking process was an absolute shambles. Arrived to find that the telephone booking hadn't been processed correctly, and although they made space to accommodate us, this was next to the pool table and not in the main restaurant. Won't be returning, and wouldn't recommend!

Had a super Christmas dinner here. We were well looked and I had the paté starter which was gorgeous and my partner had the prawn starter which he really enjoyed. Fabulous choice of moist tender turkey gammon and beef plus loads of vegetables followed up...

Booked with family to have our Christmas Day lunch here and unfortunately we were left very disappointed and regretting our choice. Starters were OK but took a while to come out and, because the service was slow, some people finished their starters before others even got their plates. The main (carvery) is where the major issues started - the man at the meat deck refused to give us pigs in blankets despite these being part of the menu which we had paid for. I tried to show him their Christmas Day menu on my phone to show that everyone should get 2x pigs in blankets but instead he just shouted and argued saying that we could only get them if we had paid extra. In the end another staff member had to come over and remind him of their own menu which is what I tried to explain. Was also only given 1 yorkshire pudding (despite the menu offering 2) but after the pigs in blankets saga I didn't fancy another argument. The gammon was tasty, but the beef was really overdone and tough and the sides were pretty much all stale from how long they had been sat there. The beef dripping roast potatoes were particularly bad as they had been cooked to hell and tasted like burnt oil. Not sure the sprouts were "maple and bacon sprouts" like the menu said as they were a watery mush. Desserts were fine but again took a while to be served. The fourth course (mince pies/coffee) was lacklustre - we were offered some mince pies from a tray that had been sat at the bar for hours right after our dessert but were not offered any drinks and ended up going home shortly after this point. There were long waits at the bar to get drinks and on multiple occasions we were not even acknowledged for 5-10 minutes with no apology for the wait when we did finally get served. The atmosphere was fine but there wasn't any Christmas music (just music blaring out from the sports bar) and the toilets were filthy. The service overall was pretty poor and not really what you'd expect on Christmas Day given that you pay triple for what is essentially their day to day food and drink you'd normally get for less than 20 quid. We seemed to be quite lucky we were a later booking as we overhead staff members saying to other customers who were waiting to be seated that people there already were taking ages (probably down to the slow service) and that they were going to rush them to finish. We didn't expect a lot, but at the least we did expect a decent quality meal/experience and not to have to argue with members of staff on the day to get the food we had paid triple the standard price for. The shambles we experienced put a massive downer on our day and doesn't inspire any of us to come back, especially not for any special occasion or future Christmas meals.

My partner & I booked our Christmas day lunch here, on reflection a bit disappointed, table booked for 12pm, place looks nicely decorated but no Christmas music, starters came out & was lovely couldn't fault it, went down hill from there on, we barely finished the starters & the waitress was almost pushing us up to get our carvery, my partner had turkey & i had turkey & a slice of beef, the turkey was gorgeous, melted in your mouth but couldn't eat the beef was so tuff, so called roast potatoes looked & tasted like aunt Bessie's & cooked in the deep fat fryer, mashed potatoes had a skin on it, new potatoes i think was out of a tin & cabbage looked like it had been there all morning, only just finished that & i nipped to the loo, came back to the table & the dessert had already been served only for my partner to tell me that the waitress said that they had to rush us as it was booked for a 2nd sitting, was meant to have mince pie & coffee for the 4th course but they gave us the mince pies for later & no coffee then, very disappointed with the food, the fact we were rushed & not much atmosphere, we had to go to the public bar area to finish our drinks, not at all what i was expecting, very very disappointed

Without doubt best carvery in Torbay. Fantastic price, exceptional amount of veg, 3 beautiful cooked meats. 2visit and definitely won't be the last. Service great all staff, always busy bit never feel rushed. Wonderful!😋

A delightful pub, the carvery is unbeatable in quality and especially price!! The staff accommodated our group of 12 with no booking for a random Christmas get together.
