Old Coppers Malt House in Shropshire

Opening night for what is now called 'The Lounge' that is in the lower portion of the Old Copper Malt House pub. We had great expectations for this place that has sat empty for sometime. We were therefore a little disappointed that apart from some paintwork, little has changed since the last iteration of this venue. The bar side was the same as I remember it from a few years ago; the advertising in the local social media promised a 'Sports bar & Grill'. This is far from what currently exists, but perhaps there are plans for furter works to be carried out. The dining room was not in any way inspiring. HOWEVER, the food was nothing short of delicious and made up for the fairly drap interior. We were a party of six, all of whom felt, as I did, that the food was excellent. Beautifully cooked starters and main courses that were very tasty with the right amount of spice that will please the local clientel. Without a doubt the best Indian meal that I have had in Shropshire; we will return soon and wish the new owners the very best in this new venture.

Not sure if changed owners but pub was renowned for selling great beer. Came in on a Saturday night and not a single beer in the pub. All hand pulls were empty which I have never experienced at a pub. A shame as this was a cracking pub that we would always pop into when passing through Church Stretton

Nice place, clean tidy, good service.

Very nice Sunday roast. Couldn't fault the food or the service. Dogs allowed in the bar and the top part of the restaurant but limited seating in these areas.

My friend and I passed this pub after taking a trek up the Shropshire Hills. We thought we would pop on for a quick drink before making our journey home. When we entered the pub you could feel the other customers staring at us. There was only one person at the bar being served, as we waited at the bar the old bar lady serving didn’t even acknowledge we were there. There was younger lady who was doing nothing but again didn’t acknowledge we were there or served us. An older man then appeared and again the same treatment. We then left without being served. This is the most unwelcoming and unfriendly pub we have ever been to. They clearly like a ‘certain’ clientele and clearly do not welcome people of colour. Very disappointing and upsetting to be treated this way. Avoid this pub at all costs

Nice Sunday roast with a friendly atmosphere

We had a fantastic Sunday lunch today. Husband had lamb shank and I had Turkey, both delicious. Veg done perfectly, roasties and Yorkshire pud just right to. Very welcoming staff and our little dog loved the attention. Definitely recommend.

Ended up in the pub today as train cancelled so had a hour to kill. Welcoming staff who went above and beyond to help retrieve my train tickets when my phone died. Thank you so much. Well worth a visit, lovely atmosphere, great set up and the best bar man. Thanks again.

Absolutely fantastic Sunday lunch. Decided to eat here last minute. No booking required. Host only recently taken over pub but has already set the scene for the best Sunday lunch in Church Stretton and excellent value for money. Even my dog was given some roast beef as a treat. The food was cooked to perfection and included all the trimmings you would expect even 2 extra jugs of gravy! This has to be the number 1 spot in town for Sunday lunch.

Really good place to eat and have a beer. The man behind the bar served us and the was very nice and gave us a really good beer. The food was lovely and the plates were quite big. Very recommended if you go by this place.

Very 'local'. Popped in for drink after walking up the mill. A nice pint, even better if you like going to the toilet afterwards and hearing the locals say to the barman 'has he bought a drink?' Yes I did, in fact two drinks and a packet of crisps if it's any of your business?!

Very accommodating. Good real ale selection and quality. Enjoyed the sandwiches and chips.

Just out walking and decided time for dinner. Very welcoming. Great food. Mandy is a great chef and really looks after you.

We are locals and have been into the pub a number of times with the new management in place. A very friendly team offering a large range of changing real ales with 2 local from Ludlow Brewery on a couple of our visits. Currently have a chalkboard for clients to vote so that they can judge which ales people enjoy. There are many places to sit - 2 bars and the restaurant area with some cosy 4 seater nooks tucked away from the crowds! Wonderful to have the pub back and serving great ale.

Food was lovely and fairly priced. Young waitress needs to think about what she is saying, we only asked for some red sauce to which she responded sorry I'm too busy.

Just dropped in and had a very delicious meal and pudding. One very extremely enjoyable menu polite staff on what must have been a very busy day

The beer was top notch. Staying locally on holiday and have visited a couple of times already and would happily do so again. Clean glasses, clean lines and great selection on tap too. Pool table is reasonable, little tight on the windows but nothing a short cue won't solve. Thank you very much!

Recently reopened still a good range of real ales and similar menu.

Visited yesterday for Sunday Lunch, we hadnt booked but was able to be seated. Food was lovely, there were 2 beef dishes 1 pork and 1 turkey roast, plenty of fresh vegetables and a great yorkie and the gravy was lovely and thick, we would have had the 3 courses but were tight on time due to a hospital appointment. We will definately return and enjoy their hospitality and the three courses. I am somewhat amused by other peoples demands. (Bigger plates) you can always keep topping up as there was plenty of food. Thoroughly enjoyed our Sunday lunch on the first weekend of the dining room re-opening. Beautifully cooked meat and vegetables, and plentiful. With the availability of GF rolls and GF desserts we couldn’t resist making it into a 3 course meal. Lovely friendly and helpful service from Hazel too. Welcome back!

Really well-kept pint of TT Landlord after an afternoon walk on the nearby hills-could have been in Bronte country! Good VFM and well presented interior. 7 min. walk up from the station.

Had a Sunday Roast here last year and it was amazing. Came back here last Sunday, for another, and it was also amazing. Friday 1st October we visited for lunch and I had the most amazing sirloin steak with blue cheese sauce. It was cooked to perfection, very succulent and incredibly tender. My Wife had the Dirty cheesy chips with bacon and bbq sauce which She loved. Heather and her staff are very friendly and we will be back in the near future. Thanks for having us. Great Landlord & staff Cracking selection of ales, especially White Rat. Great jukebox.

The staff were extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the real ale and food. The beer was well kept. The steak and ale pie, as recommended by the waitress, was brilliant. Scampi and chips was also very good wIth really crispy proper chips.

Very friendly welcome, nice environment, enjoyed a tasty and good sized meal consisting of 2 x Roast Beef dinners and 2 puds. Total came to £40 including 3 drinks. Service excellent, waitress Heather attentive without being a nuisance. Don’t be put off by website stating Sports bar as the Restaurant area is separate and not noisy on the occasion we visited. Will visit again next time we’re in the area.

A nice pub, food ​is good, and there is lots of space.

Just returned from a week's holiday in Church Stretton and tried here on the first night. The choice of meals and the quality were excellent, the service from the staff could not be faulted with them all being both cheerful and helpful. In fact we enjoyed it so much that we visited 3 times.

Good food, excellent beer & friendly service. Highly recommended.

Visited today 26/08/2021 English law says you don't have to wear a face covering inside pubs but gentleman at the bar who wasn't wearing a mask wished to divide people who wore masks and didn't wear masks even though I'm exempt even though it's not mandatory anymore just because they closed for 3 days apparently because someone tested positive for coronavirus well you cant just go about discriminating people like this if I want to sit in the bar or the lounge then I could if there is space available and the table is not reserved or the room is open unbelievable ! Felt unwelcome and I felt like I done something wrong to deserve this mistreatment ? First time here, first time coming to church stretton surely the other pubs and bars around here don't do this discrimination anymore. Black people don't have to sit at the back of buses anymore

Very good real ale served by a landlord who knows his beers.

From the second we stepped foot inside to when we left, we were made to feel so welcome by the really lovely staff. They helped bring our pushchair inside, found two high chairs for the other children straight away, drinks were bought to the table immediately and our food order came pretty quickly too! They definitely went above and beyond to make us feel at home, and they certainly made the children feel welcome too. The menu had good variety, and the children’s options were great (the portion sizes for the little ones were perfect). Our meals were all delicious and we left uttering the words “well we’ll go there again!” Thanks for a fab lunch.

We popped in after a walk with our doggie and they were very accommodating of him, we had a good seat in the bar area and the team even made us pork baguettes especially as we weren't aware that it was a Sunday lunch menu only that was running, and we were only looking for a light bite. My wife and I had lunch here and it was delicious. We both had a baguette which included chips and salad and I must say not only was it well presented and very tasty it was excellent value. In addition I had Three Tuns ale which I thoroughly recommend. We shall be returning very soon to sample other beers. Phil and his wife were very welcoming and provide a friendly and professional service.

Great landlord and a wonderful pint of Exmoor Gold hope it's still on when we next visit in a couple of months.

We were given an extensive and varied vegan menu and served extremely promptly by a friendly member of staff. The food was delicious and healthy. We loved it so much that we ate there twice in a row!

Simply from the point of view of the beer, this is a great place to visit, 5 cask ales on offer and served in tip-top condition, and the staff always happy to have a chat and offer advice on their offering

Nipped in for a meal after a long drive from south Wales And the service was excellent Food lovely and prices good too for what we got. Steak was perfect. Homemade onion rings. 😋 yum. Would come back here again when visiting church Stretton

Charming old-fashioned country/town pub. A sign in the window said it won a local CAMRA award a few years ago and I'm not surprised, as the ales we had were in top condition. Food was tasty and good value for money. Friendly, helpful service as well.

Really liked it here, guest ales on tap (and samples) and the landlord and landlady were top and chatted about the beers etc. Food was really good and I'm a heat addict so they were happy to customise my dish with extra chillies and hot sauce. Very friendly and welcoming and will definitely visit again.

Nice centrally located bar in Church Stretton with a selection of real ales & friendly bar staff. Sheltered out of the rain and even our soaking wet springer spaniel was welcome (in the bar).

Lovely pub with great service and staff. Everything you'd expect of a semi rural public house in the middle of Shropshire. Great range of drinks and food too. Pop in if you are in the area and grab a pint. We sat in the window watching the other travellers walk past enjoying our drinks and surroundings. Perfect.

Proper Pub with Proper Ales and Proper Pub food. If you like good choice of excellently kept ales with your meal this is the place in Church Stretton. Pork Belly bits are a favourite of ours and the Cheese broads are amazing!

Popped in here for a late lunch after our walk at carding mill valley. Food was lovely and friendly staff . Hand sanitiser around the pub to use, clean pub, and was very good with the table service. Food came out quickly and was tasty...

We have recently visited since lockdown reopening and had a great experience. The landlord and staff very welcoming and really know their ales. Had a good selection too given that so many pubs currently have a very limited selection. Ask for a 2 pint jug drawn straight from the barrel.....you will not be disappointed! Thank you.

Visited the antique shops and fancied a light lunch before heading, this pub was well signed for a beer garden so seen as a sunny day and with easing of lockdown we thought perfect, entered pub, met by a super spotless pub, friendly bar staff...

I went as apart of a large, pre-arranged booking for lunch. Eating in a group can be a bit of a lottery. It often depends on how well the place copes with large numbers in a short timescale. I was impressed. The service was friendly...

The only place in Church Stretton to play pool. This pub has changed significantly for the better over the last few years. Now stocks a wide range of real ale in excellent condition. Friendly and knowledgeable bar staff. Tim Taylor's landlord is always on which is a perfect point purred in a propper jug. A great pub.

We were a party of 16 for the Festive Lunch on Sun 22nd Dec 2019. The restaurant team were very helpful in meeting our changing needs as we approached the date. On the day the service was good and the food was excellent, and lots...

This place has had a few ups and downs over the years but it would appear that it is now back in the game. There were no less than seven hand pumps when we called in last week and some real classic ales to boot....

We bought three different burgers (a range to choose from) and supped on Old Peculier; what better way to spend a Thursday evening! There wasn't much atmosphere as where we sat was very quiet, but the service and food were worth it.

I went here one evening, the waitress was very pleasant. I had sirloin steak, which was a bit tough and grisly, the diane sauce was lovely, and the battered onion rings were the best I have ever had. All in all it was quite a nice meal, shame about the steak.

On the Saturday evening we decided to give the restaurant a try.We were greeted and seated by a very friendly lady and we were treated to table service in the amazing beautiful, if not slightly unusual and quirky restaurant.There were 4 of us in our group and we all ordered something different. A massive beef burger with blue cheese. Great mealChilli with half chips & half rice. Great meal A fish burger. Whole cod on a burger. Amazing! Carved ham, eggs chips. Great meal.The chips in The Old Coppers Malthouse are just fabulous.We had a really lovely evening.Great drinks, great food, great hospitality.Worth a visit if you are in Church Stretton.

Visited twice whilst on holiday in the area with my husband and parents. My husband and I are vegan and were very pleased to find a separate vegan/vegetarian menu. On both occasions we were served by Michelle who was lovely, knowledgeable about the menu options and nothing was too much trouble. The food on both visits for all of us was fantastic, we all enjoyed our meals which were well cooked and tasty. Highly recommended.

During a weeks stay in Church Stretton we ate here on several occasions. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The quality of food was excellent, the Sunday roast being one of the best I have had in a pub.Every thing we had including the childrens meals were of really good value. You really should give them a try!

The Old Coppers Malt House is at the very centre of Church Stretton with plenty of car parking behind. We visited for dinner on a Friday and were surprised that we were almost the only diners. I can't understand why, as the menu offered plenty of choice and the food and service were excellent. My companion is a vegetarian, and she was impressed by the choice of vegan options. They also offer a good choice of draught ales - when I described my preferences, I was advised to try Rev James which was delicious. We started with Cod Goujons and Fish Cakes - both nicely presented, then the Mushroom, Brie & Cranberry Wellington and the Steak and Ale Pie (which came with a jug of gravy)..

Very friendly gentleman behind the bar who I take to be the landlord. We had real ale - Exmoor Gold - we both said to each other that it was from a very well kept cellar. We saw some meals that looked very nice. There was an offer of Bacon, Brie and Cranberry toastie with chips and salad for £6.95 advertised and that seems like a fantastic deal. Well recommend this venue, we will be returning.

We had a very enjoyable Sunday lunch here. The staff were very attentive and pleasant. The food was very good with good sized portions. It is also a lovely building and a nice place to eat. It was fairly quiet and deserved to be a lot busier.
