Called in for a quick drink. Heard it's closing soon, perhaps the locals think it's already closed and that's why there was hardly anyone in there at 7 in the evening . Staff were pleasant enough but the place could do with updating.

Visited this place for a meal and a couple of drinks with my wife and 3 young kids. The food was nice and well presented. My kids are very fussy and I had to put requests on each meal, with the kitchen staff ( the tall chap was on again) very accommodating as usual. Finished my meal off with a night cap as my missus was driving (surprised there was any spirit's left the way the land Lord was knocking them back lol) and a pudding for the kids. Very good value for money.

We went to the OC for an anniversary meal with family, and everybody wanted to compliment the chef, and he duly came out, and was very pleased with the comments. I must also point out that it was a very busy night, also due to Forest on the TV but the staff continued to serve with no complaints from anybody. Would also like to say, regards previous comments that have always found the staff and management to be friendly and helpful since Mike took over

Three of us thought we'd try the Old Colonial as we hadn't been in for a long time. The young barmaid was extremely helpful and friendly. The beer was good; and the designated driver had tonic water which was served ice cold with lemon and ice.Sadly there was no atmosphere..the pub seems to have lost it's way. Sunday evening and there was a only a handful of customers in.

This pub has been a local of ours over a few years, but unfortunately last year it deteriorated to a sorry state. However since Ewok took over, both pub and restaurant are turning around. Every meal I've had has been perfect and brilliant value for money, and customers are returning. Well done Ewok. Whatever you're doing is working.

Hopefully putting the record straight after reading what I consider to be a few dodgy reviews. The OC was a complete dead duck a few months a go after a succession of poor managers. My family and I are are regulars there to eat, drink and enjoy an evening with friends and quality staff. New chefs in town and a spotless kitchen to boot, the food for me is bang on value for money. I will continue to support the the Ewok in his quest in taking this place back to glory days. GOOD LUCK to the EWOK.

I visited this pub on a sunday night, seeing as it was under a new manager I thought why not give it a go, first impressions wasn't the best with a man smoking in the entrance which I was to soon find out was the manager. I then get inside and there are about 3 to 4 people waiting at the bar and 2 bar staff I waited a good 10 minutes to be served, I had a pleasant chat with the bar maid which she aplogised about the wait. Just before I was leaving I noticed the man from the entrance was incredibly drunk and was falling asleep at the bar, when I asked one of the bar maids about him they told me it was the manager, I was also talking to a regular that also told me that he gets drunk every night the pub. After not being here for about 4 years I will certainly not be coming back anytime soon.

Use to eat here all the time a few years ago so was surprised to find the venue quite empty for a Saturday night, only two other tables were occupied by diners. We ordered a burger and vegetarian lasagne food came out very quickly. A man who looked like the chef brought our food to the table, he placed the burger onto the table and as he did so his beard sat on half of the plate of my vegetarian lasagne that he was still holding. I am not the sort of person that likes to complain, so I ate the side of the meal that was beard free. This gentleman's beard is rather long for someone that is working in a kitchen... Won't be returning ever!!

Went here Monday to watch the football and have a bite at the same time. Even though it was a big match, I was aware there were only myself and two other tables occupied, none of which were eating....hmmmm.I looked at the menu and found a steak night offer on Mondays with add a drink for £1 offer so took the plunge. It was obvious before ordering this is NO LONGER A SIZZLER PUB re: review below. The branding has been taken away and the staff were not in sizzler uniform t-shirts. Apparently this and another local pub have been sold-off and are looking for investor tenants, this is only what's been said locally but it seems to add up.The steaks came out and to be fair to the place you get what you pay for. £9 including a pint of lager isn't at all expensive. It didn't look that great, everything the menu said would be there was there but the jacket potato looked rubbery-microwaved and both steaks were cooked well-done when one should have been medium rare.I think what's happening at the moment is the quite lovely couple who are running it on relief basis are doing their best between the bar and kitchen by themselves. Seemingly no chef? When the food's cheap and the place is empty you can't really complain about the quality. If that steak came out of a professional kitchen with staff you'd complain. All in all you can see what's happening here and if a serious investor comes in for the place with a refurb budget and a proper kitchen, bar & waitress set up I'm sure it could be busy and a nice atmosphere. Until then I think I'll either go up the road to the Apple Tree or down to the Wilford Green.

Tuesday evening I visited The Old Colonial with two friends when we arrived I was perturbed to see only two other tables occupied by dinners this was immediately off putting, but we sat down and studied the menu it didn't seem to be the usual Flaming Grill menu there was no Breaded Mushrooms starter so we all skipped starter and ordered three mixed grills. After about 15 minutes one of the bar staff came over to tell us that they only had two pieces of steak (Very strange for a supposedly Flaming Grill steak house) We were asked if one of us would accept some other meat from the menu as an substitute so a burger was chosen.10 minutes later our meals arrived the first thing we noted was they were not on the Flaming Grill sizzler plates also there was no mushrooms, no fried onions, and no cooked half of tomato ( By now we were thinking this could not be a Flaming Grill pub) On tasting our food the first thing we noticed was the chips were only just warm the chicken was really over cocked and the substitute burger my friend got was tasteless it was like one brought from a cheap freezer shop the whole meal was a disaster to top off our visit I ordered the crumble and ice cream of course this did not arrive instead I got custard all over my crumble I wanted to complain but my friends told me not to bother as we were already running late.I was expecting Basil Faulty to turn up as he was the only thing missing from us being at Fawlty Towers. This is the first time i've ever put any negative feedback i'm not some kind of keyboard warrior out to cause trouble nothing I have put in this review is false to be honest i've toned down my opinions of The Old Colonial so as not to offend anyoneObviously we would advise others to give Fawlty Towers a miss

We called in for a lunch and things didn't go to plan from the start. The till didn't work properly, there was only one ale on (though that proved to be the best part of the visit for me), food was slow and when it arrived two of the three meals were poor and not much was eaten from those. A fish finger wrap contained battered fish fingers rather than the breaded type - so beware - and were not good. A separate side salad could hardly be described as a salad. It was tiny. The bar was busy but the restaurant was empty and it wasn't a surprise why unfortunately. Our fears were confirmed. Staff were apologetic but it was disappointing.

Having been here a few times before and found it fantastic I've always come back to this place again whenever I wanted a juicy steak and could guarantee the colonial would never fail me until this evening!!! On arrival I discovered that the company had changed hands but decided to give it the benefit of the doubt as a name doesn't apply to quality!! Again I was wrong! To start the sizes of steaks had altered then when I'd made my decision I was informed my choice was unavailable! On eventual arrival of the meal my food was presented on a plate rather than a sizzler the chips & onion rings were clearly out of the freezer and the garlic bread with cheese that cost £2.99 was no more than a stale bottom of a ciabatta cut in to 4 measly squares!! I have suggested this as a top quality steak grill to which I now feel embarrassed and disappointed that I shall never go back again!!!!

Local pub. Been coming here for the last 22 years. Used to dine here a lot, but not anymore. Reason for this is its messy, food and paper on the floor, kids screaming all the time. No seems to collect glasses of the table. This pub ok if you want rough it. We now take a little walk to a proper clean friendly local pub called Apple tree. Which is worth paying extra for your money.

Stopped off here for lunch today as the pub down the road was packed.once inside we found plenty of empty tables and looking at the menu I could see why. The menu is very limited and one of the 2 things I would have been interested in was on a special lunch menu and as such wasn't available on a bank holiday, the other was a burger but they are only available on brioche buns and I'm not really a fan.

Stopped off on way home from London for a quick bite to eat. Staff were very pleasant which was a shock to me as it was another of your generic pub chain establishment. Menu was huge and was difficult to choose but decided on nachos and breaded mushrooms both of which were delicious and huge. Main courses were also huge and well cooked. Overall value for money and server was a credit to the establishment

Having a week off with the family we thought we have a dinner out to finish it off. I suggested Old Colonial because they are good. This was our fifth visit and it could be our last. It is obvious this place cater just for the football fans the diner is just after thought. We went into one booth and there was food on the floor so we went into the next one. The plaster was falling apart the table was wonky we just up with it. We went to the bar and order our food he even made us go thorough it twice. We didn't mind the wait but when our food we wished we never bothered. The steak were fatty and gristle and when we order one steak medium it came charred well done. The waiter was half hearted in his job who looks he wanted to be with the youngsters considering im 27 I never thought this place could get worse but I am afraid it has

we visited the old colonial on sunday 29/06/2014. we have eaten here before and have never had a bad meal... UNTIL Today.I ordered the Sunday chicken roast and my husband ordered the Champion Burger. The food came out and straight away it looked unappealing. the chicken roast had clearly been placed in the fryer. it was a greyish brown colour and rock hard to get in to it. I told the waitress that I was unhappy with the meal. she went to check how it was cooked.. I was told that the roast chicken is precooked by the suppliers and reheated at the pub. (clearly in the fryer)I was offered a replacement meal and I chose the new York chicken (chicken with bbq sauce bacon and cheese) it was served with an over microwaved jacket potato on a sizzling plate of mushy onion and peppers. I left most of the meal!My husbands burger was average. the bread was dry and fell apart. As previously stated we have had good meals at this place but will avoid it from now on. Don't advertise your Sunday roast chicken as a Roast then put it in the fryer! Yuk!!!!A plus side the waitress was polite and friendly

This is our favourite restaurant/pub and after three years of regular visits and superb food every time, I thought it worth a well-earned high-praise review. Apart from the occasional evening event, (they hold special themed nights from time to time), it's generally lunches we go for. The quality of the food is consistently high and the service very friendly and professional. The menu is understandably quite small, given that everything is cooked to order but seems varied enough for most tastes. Despite the high standard of cooking and produce, the prices are very competitive indeed. It does get quite busy some days despite being a bit off the beaten track, so best to book if possible. There is a large secluded back garden with seating, (where they hold their events), and a good children's play area. The building itself is still an old unspoilt country pub and serves at least two different real ale. Can't fault the Plough at all really.

Stopped in for lunch and some shopping. Tried fish n chips in cafe one with beans and other mushy peas. Very large fish, all fish unlike some the have half an inch batter on each end. Had to wait about 10 mins as cooked fresh and excellent value at £6.99 each.

Many villages are losing their pubs, and this one is hanging on in there, and probably will for some time to come. The welcome given to a somewhat 'senior' mini bus full of drinkers riding around the vale, was warm and service and quality of the beers on offer was fine. Gardens are tidy and the flowers are lovely, but everywhere has a slightly 'shabby' appearance, and no doubt this is reflected in the fact that this hostelry is well off the beaten track, and has not found it's niche as a quality calling venue, and therefore it's profits are no doubt near the bone. Good luck to it, a very pleasant pub to visit, but for me not quite one of those at the top !

Visited today (a Saturday) for coffee and cake with a friend. The cafe was almost empty with 2 staff working, yet it took forever for drinks to arrive. We asked for a menu and the waitress practically threw it at us. My friend ordered a fruit tea and asked that the water not be boiling hot, but she was told that the water came as it came (adding a bit of cold water before adding hot water would have sufficed). The server was quite sharp and blunt, we weren’t happy, so we left and spent our money somewhere else.
