We have been coming here for over a year now for Sunday lunch - The beef is cooked just right, juicy and falls apart. Roast potatoes are fluffy and crisp. The veggies are cooked perfectly too. Service is always fantastic. Great village for walking through the fields too. Lovely little pub!

Brilliant service but disappointing meal. What pub does not have Pepsi max or Coke Zero? As far as the Sunday lunch was concerned, our observation was -very small portions for adult men. Carrots cut so small you couldn’t see or taste them. The only other vegetable was a mass of cabbage - who eats cabbage? Too few vegetables. Yorkshire pudding was cold and resembles a cheap Iceland offering NO HORSERADISH? Very poor. Overall, not impressed. Desert was equally poor, apple crumble was terrible - hardly any apple and the topping was wet, soggy and tasteless. We will not return and recommend the Queens Head,Bilsdon where you get a dish of vegetables, 6 roast potatoes, horseradish three slices of beef, all £6 less than here. Shame

We’ve just had a lovely Sunday lunch. We often go to this pub in the Summer or for their themed events but haven’t eaten here for a while but after such a lovely Sunday lunch- that will change! We had sweet chilli chicken to start followed by a Sunday roast. There was plenty of food, everything was tasty and a good choice of desserts. Extra bonus that’s there is a little area with kids toys and books too. We will definitely return for a lunch soon and recommend the pub to our family and friends too!

From the moment we stepped in for our Sunday lunch, we were greeted with smiles and great hospitality! Our meals were served promptly and were really hot, the presentation of the food was excellent, and portion sizes were plenty! We had just the right amount of time between courses - which, given the size of our desserts, was most welcomed! Our table was checked on several times, just to ensure we were happy and enjoying our lunch and the atmosphere, I can honestly say that we were treated so well, we felt special, as though we were the only ones dining in there. If you are after a family friendly pub with a warm presence, this is the place to be.

We popped in for lunch and had sandwiches, which were all that were available at that time (not a problem). When the order came, the crusty cobs looked lovely. Unfortunately they were totally stale and dry the whole way through, almost inedible. Whoever made them certainly would have realised when they cut and buttered them. They were so disappointing and we all left most of them. The chips were really nice, luckily. The wilted lettuce with no dressing, not great. Would not go back, sadly, it is inexcusable to serve food like that.

Unfortunately not a good experience, booked in for Sunday lunch with friends. Friendly waitress took our food and drink order, plates arrived swimming in gravy, I prefer to put my own gravy on, not every one wants it served this way and we were not asked. Yorkshire pudding over cooked, roast potatoes brown but not crispy, under cooked. . We ordered a side of cauliflower cheese which didn't arrive until meal almost finished, very sloppy, possibly frozen cauliflower with sauce, not appetizing. We didn't stay for dessert. It's a shame, as looking forward to enjoying a pub lunch within walking distance of home.

Me &my family and another family we was with visited here. We were told the lunch time food was available still when we got there at 4.50pm even though it was just about to cross over to the main meal menu at 5pm we could still order. We made the order at 5.05pm and paid. We took our seats to then have a very rude lady come out to us and say that they aren't prepared to give us food from the lunch menu as it was ordered 5 minutes over the switch over! We explained we was told it would be ok and she said no. We needed to either order from the main menu or get a refund. Our kids looked at the main menu but there was nothing they fancied so we requested a refund. The guy behind the bar "issued the refund" back onto our cards. After calling twice since our visit and it now being 2 weeks since, we still haven't received our money back totalling £55 and i just get "we will look into it and call you back" Disgusting service.

Do you expect to pay for a meal that is inedible? Well watch out because you may have to if you eat here! A steak that was not of reasonable quality (tough as old boots) spoiled a pleasant evening in a comfortable village pub. 50% was taken off on the price of that one meal dispite not having eaten it! Consumer rights do apply in restaurants as well. Nobody likes a complaint or to have to complain but how one deals with it and resolves it shows good management. Goodwill gestures do not break the bank but upsetting the customer can lead to bad reviews.

Went with a friend here for lunch today, called first from around the corner to check they were serving food and we were told yes, went to bar upon arrival and was asked if we could wait a few minutes, waited for over 5 minutes at an empty bar and then we were served asked for lunch menus and we were told we would have to wait for 45 minutes as they had 2 parties in, got the impression she wanted us to say we would leave it but we were hungry and said that would be ok, went back to the bar to order only to be told she couldn't take my order as she had to go and take the groups tables order 1st and then she would come over, I was gobsmacked and said we only wanted baguettes apparently that didn't matter! so after watching both staff talking to locals and hanging around for 10 minutes someone finally came and took the order. We also watched several people get told they were too late to order and turned away and locals turned up and were seated and given waitress service on drinks and food. The food was ok when it came but we did not envisage such a long wait for baguettes and such a poor welcome and service. also would have been an idea to tell customers there was a 45 min wait when they phoned up just 5 minutes before arrival. The pub wasn't that busy so I don't really understand such a delay but the main issue was the way we were made to feel, front of house staff should make all customers feel welcome not just locals/regulars!

Lovely country walk to an excellent country pub, not too far off of the beaten track. This was a repeat visit to what is becoming a regular haunt for Sunday lunch. Has no pretentions, other than to serve high quality, excellently presented, tasty food to valued customers. Staff are quietly professional, being attentive but un-intrusive. Dinning area is light, airy and uncluttered. The chef/chefs produce a quality product that would make your grandmother remember the good old tractional Sunday gatherings around the family dinner table. Having booked in advance and been asked to accept a time 30min after our ideal we were informed that our food might take longer than normal to arrive. When our main course did come some 40 mins later the quality of the 3 different choices made was average. We had finished quite some time before anybody asked if we required a dessert and having chosen we then had a further longish wait for that to be brought by which time we were finding ourselves getting a bit cold due to the lack of heating in the otherwise pleasantly decorated interior. All in all not an experience I will repeat any time soon.

We had Sunday lunch here this week. It's a nice pub we've visited before with a good atmosphere in the bar. We turned up on a very cold day, but instead of a nice cosy dining room with a log fire in the fireplace down the end, it was cold and sitting next to a paned window we were in a draught and no radiator nearby. We moved near a radiator.Service was fine and the staff very nice. Two of us opted for the roast topside beef and the other the vegetarian option which was polenta stack with roast veg. The beef could only be described as thick slices of rare steak. It was not the usual sliced well-cooked item off a home cooked joint but angular thick pieces that did not look home cooked and were probably microwaved. It wasn't particularly hot. One of us sent it back for a substitute. I was just about ok with it but it was rare and difficult to cut. The replacement portion came back ok but still thick. At least it was cooked and hot this time. The polenta main course was a bit small but nicely done. Vegetables nice and apart from the beef all was well. I had a tasty pear and walnut salad starter and the whitebait and minestrone soup were fine. The pub is obviously popular but they aren't making the most of the specific dining space. It felt neglected. We would have been better off eating in the bar. They really need to get the fire going in Winter and do something about the windows. It's a pity because the set up is good, the beer very good and it has everything going for it with location and parking.

They kindly allowed us to order a meal on a night that, for some reason, the place was like the Marie Celeste. We needed a meal and it was not convenient to eat at home. The main criticism was that, although the constituents of our meals were very nice, the food was not evenly and fully heated. In particular nothing was 'sinfully' hot and some shallot and garlic was still raw. The meals were not so bad that we sent them back but we mentioned the problem and we do not expect such things to happen again. I said we hoped to go again and I hope to be able to do a better review next time.We have been there in the past for drinks when it was very busy. Under those circumstances the dining area might be rather noisy.I hope the owners can provide reassuring responses to my comments because the hostelry is in an excellent location with easy parking, has nice staff and access to nice menus.

I have eaten here often and it has everything a pub should have - bar area where locals can (and do) gather to drink, dog friendly, nice garden, very pretty village location. I really wish the new management well BUT they need to up their game with the food and general ambience in the eating area which is what will really pull people in.Went for Sunday lunch, the staple of the pub food trade. 2 people had roast beef, 1 roast pork, 1 vegetarian. The beef was 2 thick, geometrically exact slices, inedibly tough and of highly dubious provenance. We think it had been cut then microwaved in gravy. The pork was better but not great, the veggies to go with it were OK. My vegetarian meal had been prepared by someone who hadn't a clue about food. It was aubergines and courgettes, out of season (obviously) and not salted and drained to get rid of the bitterness. I shouldn't really have eaten it but what do you do in that situation? It cost more than the roast but lacked any main ingredient save for about 5 arbitrary pine nuts and a tiny wafer of baked parmesan cheese the size of a little biscuit. No carbohydrate, no protein but with a big side salad which would actually have been good with a different sort of meal. The waitress was lovely and brought me a Yorkshire pud to settle it all down a bit. I have some sympathy with establishments feeling obliged to provide veggie options but unfortunately it is a fact of catering today. 3 people had desserts which were nice but again microwaved ready in the custard.Given that it's a pub where was the landlord? Needs a lady or chap in evidence to provide some atmosphere and care - bit mean to just abandon the lovely young waitress to deal with everything. There is hot competition from other pubs in this very pretty part of the world so they need to sort these things out if they want to establish a loyal customer base.

We may have visited the old black horse on an off day but I'm afraid it was quite poor. The barman was offhand and unable to offer any eye contact. Fish and chips greasy and a bit under cooked. Chanced upon this place while we were in the area and called in to see if they had a table available for Sunday lunch. The waitress was friendly and welcoming and explained that most of the tables were booked, but as long as we were out by 2:00 they would make one available. The whole place was bright, clean and welcoming, My one negative comment would probably be that a little boy was hanging around the bar area for the whole time we were there, getting in the way of busy waitresses and really not creating a very efficient impression. However the food arrived promptly and was very good and not overpriced. We shall definitely return again when we are in the area.

As a family we sometimes meet here as it is half way between our houses, in recent years it has gone downhill but yesterday we were met by such rudeness and rubbish customer service we will not be back . Ordered 2 soups and a meatball starter . Starter came quite quickly , but no soup ... Long story short starter finished and still not soup. Went and politely checked with man behind the bar, half heartedly went to check but didn't come and tell us the outcome. Five mins later still no soup , checked again still non committal approach . Eventually a different lady came to put down spoons , have to say we were quite annoyed - no apology , very defensive , tried to say we hadn't ordered it !!!! Her manner was awful to be honest ! Soup came and was tasteless . Shame really !

Eaten here many times over last 3 years and never been disappointed. We have dined in the restaurant and informally in the bar area our outside in the large garden with views of the rolling countryside, (in the bar area they happily allow our Labrador Dylan to sit under the table). Wherever you eat there is a choice of bar snacks and tapas or full menu meals, with specials on the board. They also have a Fish night and Home Made Pie night on Wednesday and Thursday where you can enjoy a meal and free drink for around £9. This is an Everards pub, but there is always guest real ales on, occasionally a full blown beer festival, and a reasonable choice of wines. All the food appears to be home-cooked, always to a good standard and served by friendly and helpful staff (often by the owners themselves). Particular favourites are the home made pie (with hand cut chips to die for), the vegetarian lasagne and the Sunday roast lunch. This is simple unpretentious food, always well prepared and tasty. In summary, we keep coming back here time and again and always leave with a smile on our faces. We have eaten in just about every other pub in this area, but not one comes close for quality, value and consistency, they just keep doing it right.

We popped in here with a 1 hour window to eat dinner. Chose the lamb and red currant jus with dauphinoise potatoes. We were delighted with our meal, much better than expected, especially for a pub. The service was quick too. They also made a fantastic Pimms!

I often eat here, especially on Thursday when it's pie night! Lovely home cooking and would recommended it to anyone. There are a great variety of ales too.

Have visited this pub so many times and it keeps getting better every visit. Visited yesterday and had a seriously gorgeous 3 course Xmas dinner. All cooked to perfection and served by fantastic staff. This is easily the friendliest pub I have visited in Leicester and the amount of people who revisit is a testament to how the pub is run. Alas the curry night is no more but there are still a lot of great choices for everybody's taste. The new decor inside and out also gives this place the edge over other pubs. Lots of seating, inside and out. Well done all
