Food was so salty it was almost inedible. It didn’t look very appealing either as no care was put into presentation. Essentially just noodles, a few prawns in my case and some tofu in my friend,s dish. Service was not great either. It was packed and can’t understand it.

Visited Okan in Brixton and had a mixed experience. The Yaji Onigiri was excellent, really stood out because of its great taste. The Isobe Yaki was just okay, needed more flavour. Ordered the "Special" Okonomiyaki but felt it had too many flavours that didn't work well together. Next time, I'll go for something simpler. The Curry Udon, on the other hand, was very good and enjoyable. The cocktails were great as well. Overall, it was a decent visit, and I'd be willing to go back to try other dishes.

We came to Brixton from Norwich for a gig and needed to eat so obviously headed into Brixton village and the multitude of great places to eat. As we walked past Okan and the smell / atmosphere / happy vibe hit us all at the same time. We had a look at the menu board and there was loads of stuff we like so we stood for a second before being approached by a really friendly fella. He sorted our table and we looked over the menu there were so many options that we knew and liked so settled on our order. The drinks and food arrived within a few minutes and we sat and looked at it.. Everything was so fresh well cooked and looked amazing. We tried each other's choices and it's was absolutely superb. The flavours were amazing and everything about the meal was perfect. The staff were so friendly and a tentative and made the whole experience very enjoyable. I have already recommended this place to two different friends who travel to London for work. Cant find fault with anything and we will definitely be returning next time with our children who are both fans of Japanese cuisine.

I don’t know how this has such high reviews, the service is genuinely awful. You’re just ignored for your entire time there and none of the staff have the awareness to check on customers after showing them to a set. Even waving and shouting didn’t get their attention. Yes the food is nice, but that doesn’t excuse the shocking service. Staff need to do better and keep your heads on a swivel during business hours- BE AWARE OF YOUR CUSTOMERS

A cute and humble looking Spot, I was greeted by a lovely lady (dont know her name) with a warm smile. I was looking for a place to sort out my music on my laptop while I enjoy my meal. However when the food came I was shocked. the food smelt great but the portion size was very small. I bought the special don mix (rice with pork , squid, kimchi), flavours were amazing but the bowl was more vegetable than squid and pork. The pork pieces was little slithers (I mean less than wafer thin) of meat. There was barley any in my bowl, the bowl was literally a kids size meal. "Im spending £13 on this"?? I thought to myself. I might as well of gone to KFC to fill my stomach. I was not happy while I was eating my meal to be honest. The last NO NO, was the service charge. Baring in mind that normally its optional to pay the service charge, but at Okan its not. Its part of the meal. When I asked if they could remove the service charge they looked confused. Not wanting to cause an issue over £3, i paid it. so my meal wasn't £13, its now £16 (not including the drink) which does make a difference especially in these times were in now. I felt it to be dishonest. If I felt like I wanted to pay a tip or anything on top then i would've. but this is bad behaviour. overall I would give them a 2/5 but I cant deny the good flavours and the initial warm greeting which i felt was a real positive. Normally I would take pictures of my meal but I just wanted to get out of there.

Pro: The Okonomiyaki was a decent size, selection of mixes/toppings was large and authentic, service was average Con: The food itself. Being from Osaka, Japan (where this restaurant claims to get its food origins from also), I wasn't really expecting too much as it's UK but the food here still fell short of what I expected. Not only was there a very tiny amount of mayo topping (and I was charged extra money for a few squirts of mayo additionally?? What sort of Okonomiyaki place charges when not enough was put on in the first place?) the batter itself is watered down till it's a mushy, scrabled egg consistency (it's not meant to be like this, probably to save money) and I dunno what happened to the cabbage but there was no bite of the vege either, just a general mush. I also bought the yaki onigiri which was nowhere near grilled enough for the crispy skin it's meant to have, and it was highly doused in soy sauce and not tightly compacted enough so it broke into a mess the moment it was bitten into. I cannot reccomend this place at all for Okonomiyaki, while the portions are bigger than Abeno, and a tad cheaper, I would say Abeno is miles better quality wise (I cannot believe I am saying this as I think that place is very steep) and would rather go there instead. At least you don't get served mush and you don't get charged for a tiny bit extra mayo :')

Really bad service at this restaurant - our food never turned up so we had to leave after an hour of waiting. They kept telling us it would be 3 mins for the food, when I went into the restaurant to check it was clear they had lost our order. When we asked for the bill to pay for our drinks that also took ages to come, they had the nerve to our service on it. Won’t be coming back. Such a shame because the other Okan restaurant in Brixton was great. This one ruined our evening and the staff weren’t particularly apologetic.

Booked a table at 8:45pm. The place is cramped and uncomfortable. No social distancing in there. As we walked in we were asked to sanitise our hands. However, the machine wasn't plugged in. Which means all the people before us hadn't sanitised theirs. We sat there for 15 minutes before we walked out. No one had acknowledged us, hmmmm. Not impressed at all. We ended up at Franco Manca where we got the warmest welcome from all the staff and brilliant service. We even left a £10 tip because we didn't book a table and they accommodated us. Otherwise we would have went hungry.

Having lived in Japan for six years (near Osaka too), I can tell you this okonomiyaki is excellent and authentic. The food here is fabulous. The service is a little strange -- we did not pay the "optional service charge" on our bill. There was nothing wrong with the service, but hey, it's not the US, and if the service charge is optional and we don't have the correct change, we're not forced to pay it, right? The waitress came back with our bill after we'd paid and told us we didn't pay the service charge. We replied indeed we hadn't, as it's an optional charge. "Was there something wrong with the service?" she asked."No, the service was fine, but your charge is not discretionary, it's optional..." we replied. In the end, we were forced to pay the service charge.OKAN, if you change your "optional" service charge to "discretionary", that would make customers feel a lot better. We left feeling a bit awkward and it kinda ruined our meal.

They have two different shops in Brixton, one for noodle, the other mainly for Okonomiyaki. I went to the one for noodle on Coldharbour lane with my parents in October. Absolutely disappointed,Service: the waitress was impatience when my mother asked about the special menu of the day (because they don't list it out). As she is not excellent with English, she was finding it hard to understand, thus as her to repeat. She rolled her eyes when my mother wasn't looking...Food: I mean...if you think that diluted soya sauce is soup, you're probably at the right place. The soup that comes with the noodle is exactly what it said on the menu, soya sauce base (other ingredients have no effect on the soup flavour whatsoever) and the noodle was overcooked to a point that it's paste-ty. We've also tried the soba in ginger soup, which tasted a plain as water, with the slightest hint of ginger you can ever get.The second shop in Brixton village, I was out late, and it was the only restaurant that is open (other than KFC).Service: I was greeted by some friendly staff, which shredded some light on the forthcoming food.Food: I've ordered a beef Okonomiyaki - Beef and Noodle. All I can tasted was the topping sauce, they have put a generous amount. As for the beef and noodle, the texture of the beef was so bad that I hate to find it in the pancake, every piece felt like mould sand, fall into small particles as soon as I bite it; the noodle, on the other hand, was blended in perfectly, you can't really distinguish the noodle from the pancake, because it was so mushy!! (I did finish it because I was hungry, but will definitely never come back)Price: ~£10 per person per meal

I went with low expectations about how good noodles can really be, but I was pleasantly surprised. The food was excellent, decent sized portions and good value. The service was great. The establishment is basic, but that is deemed 'cool and hip' now. I do not now if it was authentic as I have never been to Japan, however it was certainly enjoyable.

Fantastic simple home cooked Japanese cuisine (Osaka Street food) is served in this tiny and basic restaurant in the heart of Brixton Village. We paid only £18.30 for a great lunch for two. The 3-course set menu is a steal at only £7.50 and it's delicious.

Simple yet delicious dishes. Always happy to go back and would highly recommend. Always go for the miso soup as a starter and one of the mains will go down well.

Visited the ramen restaurant on Coldharbour lane by recommendation and it was the most delicious food either of us have had for a very long time. We had the veggie miso ramen. Real care had been put into it. It was full of flavour, great ingredients used, really filling. The owner is absolutely lovely too. Will be going back ASAP for round two! Thank you

I came here back in the winter of 2015, as my friend and I were visiting Brixton Market. It's quite a small shop at one corner of the market but it pacts big flavour! The okonomiyaki tasted very authentic, much like one you would get in Osaka, Japan. I opted for their basic/original one with pork and pork belly slices. I believe that's one of the more authentic and original flavours along with the seafood version? In any case, it was absolutely delicious, from the pancake to the sauce and the bonito flakes on top! The staff were also quite friendly and the service was quick, which is great if you're looking to grab a quick snack/meal while wondering through Brixton Market!

My favourite 'Okonomiyaki' place in Brixton Village. They serve real Okonomiyaki as we have it in Japan, and place has got such a character, take me back into 'Showa' Retro time. love this place as they serve good homey meals, even tea pots and noodle pots, knitted cushions, old signs on the walls, and excellent staffs . 'Okan' means 'mum' in Osaka dialect. The place is very symbolic Okan's home cooking meals taste and feels. So I go 'Okan' when I miss Japan.

Authentic Japanese restaurant specialised in Okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake). You can only find the same quality in Osaka. Friendly staff.

The atmosphere of Brixton market is always great. We've tried many of the little restaurants and have never been disappointed (mostly very pleasantly surprised at quality and price) until our visit to OKAN last Saturday night. The pancake swimming in sauce was sickening and the beef it was stuffed with was dry and obviously not fresh. The noodles were covered in revolting mayonnaise and again wasn't fresh. The miso soup and aubergine starter were good though.

When I think of Japanese food, generally I think of fish and sushi type dishes. Going here let me try something totally different. The menu has three choices of dish and then 6 choices of filling. Also there are some really cool drinks including Japanese craft beer. I had Okonomiyaki with squid and kimchi, while my dining partner had noodles with beef. It was really delicious and it will be great to go back again.

I used to visit their stall in SUNDAYUPMARKET, but had never been to the restaurant. It's every bit as good- better. So many protein options, and this okonomiyaki is the one I measure all others against. I always leave stuffed, and still wanting more.

We recently hired a sushi chef, and the experience exceeded all expectations. From the first course to the last, every dish was a work of art—both in presentation and flavor. The chef's skills and attention to detail were immediately evident, as was his dedication to using only the freshest, highest-quality ingredients. His ability to engage with guests and make them feel part of the culinary experience added a unique, personal touch. Hiring this sushi chef was one of the best decisions we made, and we highly recommend his services for anyone looking to elevate their dining event. Truly exceptional!
