The place itself is an amazing setting with lovely views, and most of the staff were accommodating, however the food was absolutely rank, firstly they had run out of roast chicken, (which is what most of us wanted) so went for the beef, which was overdone but served cold. We had 3 Cold solid golf ball sized roast potatoes and a Yorkshire that disintegrated into dust when you bite into it. It wasn’t something that I would serve to my dog. We were so hungry by this point but decided this wasn’t worthy of £35 per head and decided to leave. When we felt the need to complain, the manager sent over the waiter and waitress over to take the wrap for it all until we asked for a full refund. They need to have a serious word with that chef as that place should be a lot better for food at that price. Luckily it was my birthday so I feasted on my birthday cake instead! Needless to say I won’t be returning.

Just enjoyed a fabulous Christmas Day lunch for 30 in a private room at Offley Place. Beautiful, festive room and table decorations created wonderful atmosphere. Menu choices catered well for all dietary requirements (including allergies, vegans etc). Quality of food was of highest order - everyone commented on how great their individual choices were, whether traditional turkey and trimmings or else duck, lamb or even nut roast. Service prompt, professional and very friendly. All in all made for a great Christmas lunch - a good time was had by all. And great value for money, too! Our first visit to Offley Place but would thoroughly recommend!

We recently had a lunchtime meal as an early celebration for a family members diamond wedding. We all had a superb meal and were served by a very efficient man called Jack. The whole building is beautiful and dates back to the 16th century. It also offers accommodation although we didn't need to use it. We will hopefully visit again with a view to staying.

First time visit to Offley Place for Sunday Lunch with the family. Lovely setting - warm and welcoming on a particularly cold winters day. Good selection of starter, main and pudding. The Goats Cheese starter was delicious, however eating a Prawn Cocktail out of a wine glass with a knife and fork was a little odd and a challenge! (Would have asked for a spoon but no waitress to be found at this point). The Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding was delicious, my partner had the Roast Lamb and although it could have been a little pinker for his taste, was also good. Service was a little slow at times, but made for a very relaxed Sunday afternoon!

So it was that time of year again to celebrate my mother-in-law's birthday, so the family headed off to Offley Place. It's always a guaranteed hit with us all as the Sunday roast is a good one, the service is spot on and you can sit in the beautiful surroundings of the Orangerie looking out on the grounds and village cricket field. On the whole we were not disappointed, but on this visit they seem to have substituted the luxurious padded chairs and armchairs that you usually sit in to eat dinner, with a rather small and comparatively uncomfortable bamboo-effect standard seat...it didn't really ruin anything, but when I asked the waitress she said they were being used in the marquee for another event. I only hope it is temporary as I do like to lounge when I eat my Sunday roast.

Three of us went one Sunday for a cream tea. Lovely scones, cream and jam. We sat in the conservatory with other guests (it was raining) and had a jolly nice time. The only thing I would say is that we had to get up, leave our seat to find someone to order more cream, jam, tea and scones, so they could do with a member of staff on the door ready to make eye contact. I want to say that Claire is a very good and lovely waitress. Would definitely return for cream tea or afternoon tea. Well done Ofley place.

So disappointed! Took my mother for her birthday and expected this to be a real treat. Started off well with staff offering choice of dining room or drawing room -we chose the drawing room as we thought it would be more relaxed - bad choice. The first thing I had to do was subtley remove a dead bluebottle from my seat - my mum would not have stayed had she realised and I did not want to spoil her day. The arms of the armchairs were worn and very tired looking. Afternoon tea arrived, which was nice. I then noticed another small dead fly on our table which again I managed to get rid of. There were also dead flies on the window sill behind us - so disgusting! Fortunately my mum did not notice. I spent the time we were there watching the delivery man unloading his van through the window. Not the picturesque view I was expecting. The sandwiches were nice although sparse, the scones were nice and warm and we were offered more, but the clotted cream had that darker film that you get when it has set at the top of the tub- I had to spoon around it! The cakes were just okay-nothing special and really not worth the money. The staff, however were lovely - very friendly and welcoming and a tart was brought through for my mum on a plate that had "Happy Birthday" piped on in chocolate - I thought that was a lovely gesture.I decided not to complain as I really did not want to ruin my mum's day but did not stay longer than we had to.All in all some good, some bad. Probably made the wrong decision not to eat in the dining room. You live and learn!

Went to Offley Place with a group of 22 girlfriends for afternoon tea and were seated in the conservatory which is bright and airy. The food was delicious, perfect portions and plenty of tea refills. The cakes were to die for and all made on the premises. The champagne was lovely and the staff were excellent. The waiter we had was very attentive to our every need - even producing cushions for the few who were not totally comfortable in their seats. I was very disappointed when I came for afternoon tea this month for mothers day as I have been before and enjoyed it very much. Although the lady that served us was very pleasant and accommodating it was the fact that we had to wait 50 minutes for the food which when it turned up it was very stale and also if it was edible you would be very hungry when you left as the portions was very, very small! So we of course spoke to the manager and told him our complaint but he was not at all interested and didn't want to help and in fact just chucked us out! So unfortunately that was the last time I will be going and will not recommended Offley Place to anyone!

What a total let down. Used to come here for afternoon tea and was great, however went today and was absolutely let down but food and managers response. Arrived and ordered afternoon tea! Waited over an hour for it to come and the table that arrived after us with same number of people received their food first! This although slightly annoying was the least of our worries as when the food came in tier plate I said, please tell me there are three more trays of that!! Another member of our party pointed out that this was not £64 worth of food! There were one round of sandwiches each ( one sandwich cut into four) and 3 small cakes and a small scone with1 small scoop of clotted cream and small dollop of jam to split between 4 (I would have used this up for myself) we were annoyed but then when we picked up the sandwiches the generic supermarket bread was stale! So we complained. The lovely waitress girl was sorry but said she would try and get the manager! (I think his name was Ahmet) he came we said this is not £64 pound worth of food here, his response was ' it's only afternoon tea and not a meal' I explained that hitchin priory ( cheaper and nicer than here) was at least twice the amount at which he wouldn't comment! We said the bread is stale and handed a dry sandwich to him- he said he doesn't see a problem and would eat himself! He was so rude and arrogant, and as we were using a voucher that I brought my mother for her birthday explained we would not be coming back and would like our money back, he said 'let me have a look and you card' I gave my card and voucher- he went off for a while with card, came back minutes later and said he would not be refunding and would send me the bill for the tea! I said that we had not eaten any as stale he shoved us out the door and kept saying ' I will send you the bill' now worried he has taken my card details.I asked who his boss was and he said will be in later. When we googled him he is the hotel owner! Total lies all round and cannot be trusted. 1.be careful if you book as this guy is dodgy- pay with cash2. Only book if you have an appetite of a sparrow and enjoy stale cheap food.Total let down, cheap and unsophisticated food!

Treated by my wife for my 50th birthday to a champagne afternoon tea .Venue was lovely in rural Hertfordshire with Il Divo playing in the background adding to a relaxing atmosphere. Service was prompt (to start with) and staff very polite and welcoming. Was not given champagne to start with, but this was rectified with the correct drink a while later. The sandwiches were well filled and the variety of cakes was good, although not freshly baked, but the scones were like biscuits, dry and crumbled in your hands making it hard to apply the jam and cream. Il Divo then got stuck, which was not corrected and became annoying. Eventually it was turned off but not replaced. We were the only persons in the lounge and service did become slow (especially waiting for a clean plate). Overall impression - lovely location and house, friendly staff but average food.

We recently had Father's Day tea at the hotel in the front lounge (not technically the restaurant which was in the back). It was a really delicious tea, freshly made sandwiches, scones with cream and freshly baked cakes and pastries. It was all very good value as well. What made it all extra special was Dominic, who served us. He really could not have done more to make us feel welcome and at home - bringing extra sandwiches, looking after the kids' needs and really going the extra mile. His level of friendliness, service and attentiveness is a true credit to the hotel and really lifted what was already a lovely afternoon into an extra special one. I very much hope that this review is read by the management and credit passed on.

We arrived for lunch and got the overriding impression that Offley Place was a tired country golf club. Service was friendly and efficient to start and after drinks in the Bar, we were shown to the dining area. It was nice enough, but looking out from our table to the gardens and lawn, rather prominent was the debris (ie rubbish) from what was presumably the previous day's wedding; this somewhat spoiled the view. The food was variable. Soup was bland and fatty, the crab didn't really go with the water melon, the salmon main course was good, the risotto had lovely peas and broad beans but was overpowered by cream (and it was not risotto rice) - but the roast beef was tough with not enough gravy. Extra gravy had to be requested twice. Service really got rather slow as the restaurant got busier. Next, at 2pm, guests arrived for afternoon tea while we were still having lunch - rather strange we thought - shouldn't that be served elsewhere? Then we felt like we were in a zoo. Every 10 minutes or so, what was presumably prospective wedding clients, were being showed around, "gawping" at us dining. It felt uncomfortable. Puddings took forever to arrive, and too were variable. Cheese from the local" dairy" was more like from the local supermarket - cold and ordinary. The coffee order was wrong - we couldn't be bothered to get it sorted; we just wanted to leave. Overall, we felt it expensive for what it was, and poor value. We will not be back - sorry.

As with many other customers, we'd obtained a groupon voucher to visit the restaurant and decided to have a nice family night of it. We arrived at 7:30 and a round of drinks in the bar (which is lovely, if a bit impersonal). There was no pressure to move through to the restaurant, and we thoroughly enjoyed our drinks. We ordered our food (and a bottle of wine for the table) whilst we were still sitting in the bar, and around fifteen minutes later moved through to the restaurant. That's when the entertainment started. We were provided with bread as per usual, though there was no sign of the bottle of wine. Some glasses of prosecco turned up as part of the voucher, which we gladly had. The wine eventually showed up after the prosecco was gone, though the glasses were left on the table. We had a nice chat, and waited......until our starters showed up, approximately an hour after we'd ordered. The waitress was very apologetic. Apparently the window had been open and the order had been lost to a stray gust of wind.Duck Rilletes & Duck Liver parfait; "adequate" was the overall impression.Wobbly Bottom Goats Cheese Cake; allegedly served on a base of puff pastry. Apparently the chef took the "cake" part of the name rather too literally, as his interpretation of puff pastry would have been more suited to a cheesecake base.Pigeon Breast Wellington; Arrived cold, the pastry soggy and the bird itself raw. An argument can be made for having pigeon breast rare, but this particular one didn't look like it had even seen the outside of the oven, let alone an open flame.Spiced Scallops; three scallops on a small plate that would ordinarily be £10.50. The chef seemed to have taken the same approach as he had with the pigeon breast; one scallop was cooked (seared nicely on the outside, still mostly raw in the middle). The other two had been warmed at best, presumably left under a hot lamp whilst the chef didn't cook the wellington. The wellington and scallops were sent back (choosing not to replace them); the waitress was very apologetic at the state of the food, and offered us a second round of prosecco. This was to tide us over for the 20 minute wait (after the plates were removed) for the second course.Confit Duck Leg; actually lovely.Woburn Estate Loin of Venison; the venison itself was well cooked, though everything else on the plate was cold. Pearl Barley risotto is best avoided when cold, for future reference.Fillet Steak; The fillet steak itself looked wonderful. Unfortunately it was still ice cold in the middle, as were the chips it was served with. Both the venison and steak were sent back, and happily returned warm. There was a fourth main course option (I believe it was the cod?) but unfortunately it was so average in comparison to the two problem mains that it's completely erased itself from my memory. The waitress apologised again, and offered us another round of drinks. We decided to enjoy these in the bar (rather than waiting another half hour for the possibility of frozen desserts), and called for a taxi.Avoid.

We ate here courtesy of a deal and enjoyed one of the best meals I have eaten in ages. My friend ate the wobbly bottom goats cheese starter and venison for her main meal, whilst I had the scallops to start and chicken supreme mains. Both dishes tasted as good as they looked. The wine suggested by the waiter was perfectly complimentary to the food. The staff were welcoming and friendly without being overly attentive. The dining area was comfortable and welcoming. Just one slight moan when the wedding organiser (a large young lady) and viewing couple pushed behind me to show them the room used for weddings without an apology or acknowledgement for disturbing us. Our table was directly in front of the door to this room. Whilst this caused some amusement to us and other diners nearby, it was a bit rude and let down what would have been a perfect evening. Otherwise a 5 star evening.

Arranged a surprise 80th birthday celebration lunch for my dad. Lucy was most helpful and informative taking my booking details. I was allowed to go and decorate the table and when I arrived on the morning, the beautiful table was all set up in the conservatory, domenico could not have been more helpful in ensuring I had all I needed and stopped me stressing out! From the moment we arrived we were treated like kings, and again Domenico ensured our every need was catered for, he really could not have done enough for us, and his service, friendliness and courtesy were second to none, I can honestly say I have never experienced such fabulous service! The food was excellent, and again nothing was too much to adapt or change for the children. My risotto though looked on the small side, was sheer perfection and was more than enough. Even my fussy mother and teenage son and his girlfriend loved the belly of pork, and the deserts were scrum my indeed! We booked the afternoon tea some weeks beforehand and despite looking forward to enjoying the experience in beautiful surroundings the whole experience was disappointing from the start. Whilst the staff were very kind and efficient, we were seated in the reception area as we were told the beautiful lounge was being cleared, so missed out on the roaring fire and more sumptuous surroundings. My champagne was delicious and my tee total friend served coca cola. However, the tea was disappointing. The sandwiches were good, but not very many and somewhat plain and uninspiring; the scones were overcooked and dry - thank heavens for the plentiful jam and clotted cream. The cakes appeared to be shop bought and disappointing in look and taste. The balance was all wrong, too much sweet and not enough savoury. It just wasn't special enough to warrant a return visit sadly, especially if you are looking for a luxurious treat.

We held our post Christening celebrations at Offley with an afternoon tea for 27 (including six young children) and had the private use of the lounge. The room looked so pretty and certainly had the wow factor. The tea itself was delicious, a great selection of teas, lovely fresh sandwiches, homemade scones, jam and cream and at least six different cakes and patisseries. The food was plentiful and staff regularly topped up the tea and offered more cakes and sandwiches. They couldn't have been more accommodating and helpful but remained unobtrusive and allowed us to enjoy our celebrations unhurried. I can't recommend this venue for an afternoon tea celebration enough, the guests left feeling spoilt and the whole event was very special indeed.

We visited here on a Groupon deal, and have often found that this means the food is somewhat lacking to what it would be normally - but not in this case. We arrived half an hour early, but this did not ruffle the staff, who could not have been more helpful. We chose a wonderful table outside overlooking the lawns, and enjoyed the chilled glass of champagne so much my husband had to have another one!! The afternoon tea itself was sublime - fresh sandwiches and a really good selection of cakes. There were so many we had to leave some, even after taking a couple home for my daughter. We will definatley visit again (infact, we asked to see what the rooms were like, and they too were impressive and very good value for money) and will certainly come back for another afternoon tea very soon.

We wanted to celebrate our daughter's 40th birthday by indulging in a sumptuous afternoon tea in the grounds of a country house hotel. We were disappointed to find our first choice, Luton Hoo, was booked up for nearly six weeks ahead but were delighted to find Offley Place had availability on a simmering Sunday afternoon. It would have been too easy for them to find an excuse to turn down the booking as our party of six required 2 Vegan teas, 2 Vegetarian teas and 2 traditional Cream Teas. Not a bit of it ... the chef and the waiting staff - an Italian with a well developed sense of humour and a charming Polish lady - did everything possible to accommodate our wishes. They even contacted the Vegans in advance to ask which sandwich fillings they would like; prepared beautiful Vegan scones; provided sweet soy milk for the tea and soy cream for the scones; and plates of fresh fruit in place of the very tempting cream cakes that the rest of us enjoyed, all nicely displayed on the three-tier stands.Altogether, a most enjoyable experience. Nothing was too much trouble and we were left in peace to enjoy our time together including taking photographs in the extensive grounds.

Visited Offley for a family treat and ordered the full tea (a couple of them with the addition of a glass of Champagne). Staff were generally friendly and proficient. Minor distraction was the two larger party's going on which mean't that a few chiidren were running around (not a major issue to us as they were, in the main, well behaved), but others booking may wish to check in on what else is going on.Options on Tea were not explained by the waiter on taking our order and our's arrived as Earl Grey (OK for a change but I'm a bit of a lover of tradition breakfast varieties, so sorted this out for the second pot). The scones and cakes were all really good, but the finger sandwiches lacked imagination and a few were served with bread that had started to go hard. For me the balance was wrong and there needed to be far more sandwiches and a few less cakes for my taste (and I've got a sweet tooth!). All in all - be happy to go again.

Relaxing choice of lounges or the bar in which to read the menu and have a pre dinner drink. Order taking service was 'efficient' and we were told the fish of the day was sea bass. When taken through to the conservatory section of the restaurant for our meal we were seated at a round table for 4. It seems that there are 2 designs of tables for 4 and we were given one of the round trestle type with an irritating bar across 2 diners’ knees. It was also a bit high for the dining chairs - minor irritations I suppose. The bread slice offering was very down market and could be improved. Our starters were all excellent and well presented. When the main course arrived the head waiter apologised that the fish of the day was salmon and not sea bass! This was a bit late in the day to have been informed of this!!!! Fortunately 3 out of 4 were happy with salmon but I was not and complained that had I been told this earlier I would have chosen something else. An alternative Sir? I was certainly not going to sit there watching 3 people eat and then let them watch me eat in 20 minutes time, so it was salmon all round (which was good). As compensation we were not charged for the 4 sweet courses and they were all excellent. Waitress forgot to top up our wine until we asked where it was- the bottle was across the room alongside an unused table. Wine a bit pricey but that is where they are positioning themselves as the hotel’s location and ambiance are good. Why don’t restaurants put a lid over the vegetables to keep them hot? Would I go back? Definitely yes although in winter I might want to ask for a table not in the large conservatory unless it is heated better than most conservatories are.

The best local pub. Fantastic hosts... so welcoming, even for someone who doesn't go there that often. Beautiful old pub with nice garden. Highly recommended for a beer or two.

We visited early Saturday evening, such a wonderful experience. Great food, served in a timely manner and fantastic service from Toni who made us feel very welcome. The addition of a small soft play area was a hit with our children too.

Earlier today I dropped my dog at the Groomer in Vanstone Parks Garden Centre, my car to the car wash guys then went into the cafe after a look around the garden centre. It was just after noon. I ordered an omelette with salad and crisps with a pot of tea. Paid for my order and sat outside with my plant pot which had my order number on. The waitress came out with a pot of tea, going well so far! When the waitress brought my order it was an omelette on a rather large plate! I asked where the salad was and was advised this it the breakfast menu, you don’t get anything with it then walked away. I thought I’d read the menu incorrectly until the lady who also sat outside was served an omelette with enough salad you could say it had its own garden! What a pity the service wasn’t a patch on it as when the previous owners/ managers ran the Orchard Cafe. The Groomer did a lovely job on my dog and the car valets made my car sparkle. Just been let down by the cafe’ won’t be going there again

First visit to The Jester... Friendly welcome. Quick & efficient service. Food: Superb roast, a well presented hearty plate. Chicken stuffed with spinach, roasties, Yorkshire pudding with vegetables on the side. My partner had the Roast Pork which was equally tasty. Honey comb cheesecake didn’t touch the sides! A delight not to have to cook Sunday lunch, thank you all. We will be back 🙂
