Best chippy in Derby this place there meal deals are real value for money and the sausage in batter is just devine. Only thing with this place being the best in Derby you tend to get queues. It's been known to see queues down the precinct to as far as the post office. During covid it was that popular that they had to mark the floor and make sure people were keeping there distance. Quality at a price you can afford!

Has this place been sold because all new staff quality of mini fish very poor not cod or haddock batter had a weird taste chips warm. Not been for about 4 months although cleanliness was good I missed my buddy the previous owner

Chips hard and undercooked… couldn’t even call them to let them know… must have new staff… the chips were disgusting and for that price no thanks :(

Been going Oakwood chippy since I was a kid today will be the last time I unfortunately go and will find another one in Derby I do a basic order and just get chips, easy and no problem. Today after ordering chips and getting them home they were wrapped that tight when unwrapped them they had all mushed together, the taste of them was also funny and they didn't taste nice at all. I asked for salt and vinegar but couldn't taste any of the chips. Don't know if it's new staff but not as I remember which is really upsetting as I've been coming since I can remember.

Got that haddock and chips yesterday evening I mean it was nice at the moment but I been waking up to having awful diarrhoea n sick this morning and feel like death since??

Had been told they were great. The chips we had were bad potatoes in most of the serving. Poor quality. Need to improve standards be we go again.

An excellent and consistent fish & chip shop and an asset to the local community. The staff are always pleasant despite being under pressure. From a personal point of view the portion of chips are too large.

This has been my number one chippy for years but since the main owner hasn't been there, it's going downhill. Chips bad, sausages old. Homemade fishcake which I always had before is mainly potato, no fish like it was before. I've been twice since the owners not been there and will be going elsewhere now. Queues have gone down too. Used to be queues outside with how it was before.

Just had the worst chips ever got home they were stone cold definitely not freshly fried hard very disappointed I suspect from lunchtime not the normal fayre from them they are usually excellent would be grateful if you contact me

This Chip Shop has got to be one of the best in the East Midlands I have been coming here since I have lived in Oakwood some 20 years and it has never failed to PLEASE the food is superb, thank you Richard & Sandra Heath.

However, this should be a 5 Star Review, but their service is terrible. And I don't think it's the service itself that is slow, but rather their way of ordering food. Everyone converges outside ( in the cold ) and waits to go in the Left Hand Side door to order food, then you stand there while they make the food one by one by one by one. Guys its easy. People walk in and order at one end, Order gets placed and processed, then the move to the other end of the counter to pay and give their name, then they move aside and let the line keep moving. Once the food is ready the person behind the counter shouts the order name and the person waiting to the back AWAY from the counter and line picks up their food. Now you have half of the queue inside the shop instead of outside and you have more order being taken per minute. Just a suggestion. Improve this aspect and you have a 5 star chippy

The fish and chips here are the tastiest. There kebabs are delicious too. We don't like to go anywhere else. Only gripe is service is slow.

Just cooked, huge portion of fish and chips with mushy peas at a very good price what is not to like about that for a spot of tea.

Food is decent but they need to review their processes. Either their methods are slow or they need to parallelise with more fryers as there are frequent bottle necks in service. Frequent long queues outside are not from volume of customers but slow service. Sometimes you're stood there in the shop for ages and the staff are just chatting and making more boxes up while one staff member is taking orders and making them? It makes no sense. Also they're often waiting for more chips to cook at peak times where the need should be anticipated. They should also communicate this as usually you're just stood with no idea whilst they talk amongst themselves. Never known a chippy like it. Also last time I went a team member was wiping her nose on her sleeve and hand the whole time. Not exactly comforting in food service!

Great chippy but the kebab was way too spicy. Without sauce. Had to throw in the bin. Go here regular as the food is excellent. Love the home made fish cakes

The food is absolutely spot on, best chippy around. Only marked as a 3 due to a rude member of staff, spotted her rubbing her nose on her hand and sleeve. The other staff said she had a nose bleed. As we got to the counter I saw what looked like blood on a plate and just said politely to another member of staff. She was fine about it and took the plate into the back, she came out and said it was chilli sauce. Then the girl who was rubbing her nose came back out saying quite loudly 'who said I got blood on a plate, some woman said it.'. I don't know the girls name but she's an embarrassment to the chippy! Even the girl who served us said she's so rude to customers. Won't stop us going in, but she needs some basic hygiene training and needs some customer service training. Feel sorry for the staff who have to work with her.

We were supposed to be taking the dogs to the seaside today, but the weather was not as anticipated, so decided to stay at home and chill with a film on Apple TV and a chippy lunch. The food at Oakwood Fish Bar was simply superb! Just wanted to say a BIG well done to all the staff there. Fantastic food, as usual!

We have lived in Oakwood for over 30 years . Never been disappointed in all that time. The owner is a most kind & generous person. Recently my wife broke her hip & is recovering at home . He never fails to ask how she is . Even giving me a free fish & sausage . There are not many like him , he's one in a million. No wonder he has kept going so long with reasonable prices excellent service . Best of all quality at its best

TONIGHT was the WORST chips ive ever had from there with the other food I got. In my eyes .£11 + down the drain, Well over cooked . And Rubber..and most so hard with being over done couldn't eat them ..threw 80% of them away.. standards go up and down there. I've had rubbish food from there about 7 times now . I've even took food back before there to show them how rubbish it was..why carnt there Standards be the same as Sussex circus chipshop who owns both..sometime I drive to Sussex circus just to make sure I get proper prepared nice food . The owner need to have a word with then at ockwood ......to keep there Standards Up, and serve nice food All the time..

Great chip's but their is aways a massive cute and the last two times I've used this establishment. I was changed for fish but upon getting home to find the missing. This ruined our family meal's, either someone goes without or two people end up with delayed or cold food

Very popular shop were there always seems to be a queue waiting to be served which to my mind is a good sign and it does move along quickly. Lots of various options on the menu boards, huge portions, tasty and it does not break the bank.

We always go to this chippy as it’s our local. They have the best chicken kebabs in Derby. They’re massive and there’s so much tender chicken inside… and may I add it only costs £6.30 with a naan upgrade. Our boys love their chips and we really can’t complain. Please never change 🙏

Used to love this place, was my favourite chippy. Got some fish and chips on 15/07/22 and it gave me food poisoning!!

Don't understand why there are such long queues. Slow service is the reason. Had "Fish" and chips meal ine the box. The chips were dried up with lots of bits, the fish was dry with an odd taste and actually rock hard. Lobbed it in the bin and bought a chinese instead. Awful...avoid like the plague.

I have been using this chip shop for over 5 years. I have always sung their praises and recommended them to anyone who asked about a good chippy. I've always really enjoyed the food. I've also always found the staff polite and friendly. Owner has been really helpful and pleasant, often putting fresh fish in for me etc. I had a bad experience a few weeks ago and unfortunately again today - this was for the last time, I'm sorry to say. So here it is: The fish smelt odd when I got it back. Got my nose in, smelt it some more and it reeked (not just a hint, it reeked) of ammonia. I attempted to return it (I'd like to state that it was a busy night, so when I arrived to return it, I attempted to call the shop twice, so as not to cause a fuss, no answer, the line was dead). So I waited a while for some of the customers to go, thinking it was a simple mistake and I didn't want to make a scene. When I went in, I was quite rudely told the fish was fresh and it couldn't possibly smell of ammonia. Wouldn't check it though, and actually made quite a fuss about it, despite my attempts at discretion. They replaced it and off I went, thinking all would be well. It was not. Had to return it again. My partner went this time, as I was pretty upset about the way it was handled and the way I was spoken to. Apparently they were pretty reasonable with him, replaced the cod with a haddock, which was actually really good. Left it for some time before visiting again, as I wasn't sure about going back in, but I bit the bullet and went in again this evening. Ordered cod..... It stunk of ammonia. This was not just mine and not just me. Both of our meals were the same. Not only that, the fish was mushy and sloppy. So by now, I'm done with it. It was returned to an eye roll reception and comments that nobody else had complained, it was just me. I'm frankly not remotely interested in discussing it further anyway (good job as it seems they're not interested in entertaining any conversation or acknowledging the problem). We agreed I'd just take a refund and that's the end of it. They clearly do not want to smell it, as it quite obviously would be impossible to deny it smells of ammonia. So we are at an impasse and I genuinely won't use this chip shop ever again. It's a real shame, because I've always had good experiences until recently. I don't take putting a negative review on lightly (as you can see from my profile) but I feel that this needs mentioning, as I wouldn't be surprised if this made somebody ill. I don't believe the owner is intending to sell off fish, but off fish it is, I'm afraid. Having been informed that nobody else has complained about it, I can only assume that people don't smell the food, or notice if it smells really fishy, or more fishy than normal. I'd recommend you check it. I hope they rectify this, either by addressing the storage of the fish or changing the supplier, its a real shame, as I was a regular visitor to this shop. And believe it or not, I've got better things to do than go back and forth with my dinner that's cost me over £15, making up stories about fish smelling of ammonia, when the evidence is right there (but being ignored) to corroborate my complaint.

Very nice chip butty. But the lunchtime I went some of the chips where just slightly under cooked. Hence 4 rather than 5 stars. Will try again to see if it was just a one off.

I used to find this a great chippy, but service has become slow recently, and range of food limited, no pies available at all last night. Not for the first time.

I asked for the fish meal with peas but not in a box as it gets squashed in, I had to pay a pound more, the chips weren't nice, the fish greasy the batter soggy. The 2nd bad meal I have had from there this month.. I wont be going in again.

Started coming here when I moved to Oakwood in 2019. I’m not sure what’s changed but the Quality of food has gone downhill. The last two times I’ve been the chips have been so greasy it’s made us all feel sick. I don’t find the staff particularly friendly either not very welcoming! Last Friday we went went somewhere else for our family chip shop tea and food was much better with a smile to their service unlike here!

We are very fussy..... Can't find anyone we really like.My hubby had a donner kebab it was still hot when I've got it home a rarity! I just had a couple of Potato Fritters to try. The kebab was fresh and nice. Batter on the fritters was crisp and golden.Very welcoming staff.

Since a few weeks ago no need for a mask unless you want to, still have to queue outside, which i have no problem about. Great portions and still tasty, very enjoyable mid-week treat.

Asked to stand outside like a dog because I don’t ware a mask then refused to serve me until I did. Third time haven’t problems with this place and masks.

Mid-week meal, stopped at Oakwood Fish bar on way home from work, queue outside waiting your turn to go inside wearing a mask and place order, its a great system and keeps everyone safe (play the game its easy), quick service, easy credit card payment,...

Food was good but it was like it was their salt and vinegar and didn’t want to give it away. Also treated like a dog and asked to stand outside an empty shop about not wearing a mask.

Oakwood Fish Bar is still open for business during the second lockdown, i'm glad they are, quick service for fantastic fish and chips, will be happily visiting again.

Visited again for mid-week Tea, queue outside still in place, but service is quick and food as tasty as ever in large portions, don't forgot your mask.

Visited on a Saturday the social distance restrictions are still in force, which to be honest should soon go if you have to wear face masks inside building, but either way quick service of excellent chips, pie and mushy peas in a good size portion.

Located in the main Oakwood precinct with lots of parking outside, a visit to this well organised and Covid prepared fish bar is a safe pleasure. Food quality is very good, not at all 'greasy', portion sizes are good too. Staff are friendly and helpful,...

The food was dry and cold . Although the rest was lovely apart from the chips, The staff were amazingly helpful and do not rush you . Kind and great prices .

Always freshly cooked and good portion sizes. Good quality and good value meals. Queues in the evening have always been common due to popularity.

After a brief period due to covid restrictions the Oakwood Fishbar is back open, operating in a safe way and ensuring you can get Fish & Chips, large fish meal needs an appetite to consume and it was well worth the wait to open, marvellous.

Just about to jump on a train home, very hungry and fancied something I could eat on the move and quick.Unfortunately I choose sausage and chips. Not good. The food, both the sausage and the chips were dried out. The sausage had that dried thick skin around it and it was like the chips were cut from cardboard. It may sound harsh but it's my cash and throw away the meal.

Ordered 2 large fish and chips meals in a box £6.20 each. Both fish tasted dry and over cooked and the amount of chips in each box was minimal compared to what we normally receive. Very disappointing meal.
