George's Tradition - Allestree in Derby

Good food and a lovely team. The only thing letting it down is the state of the building. The facilities are run down, the seating area is tired and unwelcoming. There has been a sign up for months apologising for broken equipment in the kitchen. How long does it take to replace a broken fryer?

Quality chippy. Been coming here for decades. Very rarely got anything to complain about but did today and it was sorted and compensated immediately, duty manager and staff superb, thanks.

A great traditional chip shop love going here when in the area and the flavours of the fish are very good.

Tried calling to complain, cold chips and the fish wasn't edible. And too be honest I feel ill. Went there because the other chip shops were so full. It was empty..wonder why!

Came here for a post birthday treat with a friend, really disappointed. Upon arrival we were told there was no bacon or mushrooms, once we had decided what we wanted to eat, we were then told if our food would be okay served on a crumpets rather than the English muffin which was specified on the menu. We agreed to this. Finally I went to open a packet of salad cream and found it was 6 weeks out of date. I went to the tills and let the assistant know, she said she’ll go into the back and see if they had any more. The older lady with glasses and short hair, did not apologise and went into the back, came back and said they would ‘sort’ the out of date salad cream and said they didn’t have anymore with no apology. Won’t be coming back again, I don’t usually write reviews but having run a cafe myself, I was really disappointed with the service and lack of empathy. Hope this improves in the future.

Chips soggy, fish dry, peas cold, lumpy and raw. Is there nowhere in Derby that does a decent chippy anymore? Frustrating.

Placed order on line and given a collection time . Arrived on time to collect and shop wasn’t too busy . I had to wait 15 minutes after time slot to receive my order, they hadn’t even started to cook one of the orders till 10 minutes after my collection time . I was given an apology , but I won’t be going back

The george branches have gone really down hill. It's very hard to find a decent chippy.

Came in today with my brother who has autism and the staff were so lovely and accommodating - specifically when he asked them to play his favourite radio station. Such friendly staff and the food was lovely, hot, and came out quickly! Thank you!!

Very bare as the refurbishment is due to start soon, we were told. If your food is cold be aware they do not reheat meals.

Slow service, food is OK but had better for cheaper.

Last 3 times ordered from georges they've got the order wrong. Twice had chips forgotten & this time the gravy. Food tastes good but honestly can't be bothered with that anymore

Quite easily the best cod in Derbyshire. Freshly fried and as deliciously crisp as you could wish for. Superb.

Quality not as it used to be . Last time it was chewy fish, as it had been reheated few times Yesterday evening chips were not edible. They were like burnt sticks

The place is on its backside by the looks of it. As you walk in the once lovely restaurant part is now half full of tired and out of place seating. Food is decent.. sad to see the decline

Had my chippy tea here, post covid they no longer have loads of tables and chairs in the restaurant, just a few now. Food was good and served quickly by nice staff

Second time this year and on both occasions the service was almost instant, because nobody was waiting and that explains everything. I visited at what should have been their peak time and nobody was there, the service was rapid because the fish and chips had been cooked a considerable time before I arrived and were sitting there going cold. This tepid meal was served with quite possibly the thinnest and most watery curry sauce I have ever had the misfortune to eat. To be honest it went straight into the bin as it had no consistency. All this overpriced, low quality fare was served by quite possibly the most uninterested staff known to mankind. From a takeaway that once had a great reputation this is truly saddening. Never again shall I go there and I suggest everyone else does the same.

Normally decent portions but over the last few visits chip butties were lacking the chips! Would assume it was a one off but no we experience it twice.

Had fish chips and mushy peas today, really disappointed the peas were stone cold, some of the chips were burnt on one side and the fish was dry and horrid.

My whole family used to love this place but the last few times we’ve been we left feeling very disappointed. Rude staff and extremely overpriced. The last time we visited, they forgot our order and when we questioned (after waiting 20 mins) the staff weren’t apologetic and just rolled their eyes. We will be going elsewhere from now on unfortunately

My son fetched me some fish and chips yesterday October 13th and they were really poor, he came at around 2.15.. the fish was so dried out it was like chewing cardboard, the peas were also dried out. Normally the fish is cooked on order so whether this one had been kept warm for a long time I don’t know but I was extremely disappointed.

You cannot normally fault Georges, but today, cold, undercooked chips and at nearly a fiver for a portion i was very disappointed. They were greasy and the fryer should have noticed this and not served them up.If i had lived nearer they would have gone back. poor quality

Lovely fish and chips to eat in for 8 of us, cost £93. Then got charged over £2.50 for ketchup!

Visited for takeaway small fish and chips meal deal. Not sure how it's a deal at £8.40 but anyway that's only one grumble. The main issue was the very tiny piece of fish in very soggy batter and the chips were barely warm and had obviously been cooked well in advance of our visit. So disappointing in the decline of quality at George's in recent times. The fish and chips always used to be so delicious, hot and freshly cooked. Nowadays, sadly they are mediocre at best and not even good value. Wouldn't recommend any more.

Excellent fish and chips. I used click and collect and was a little disappointed that I had to wait so long for the next available slot (hence only 4 stars). Maybe next time I'll just turn up so that I don't have to wait as long.

Walked in, no greet at the counter. Had to wait why staff made up other customer orders which is acceptable but not without an acknowledgement. Price bit on the heavy side. Customer service very poor. Potato Fritter, oh that will be a long wait,how long is a long wait? About 15, mins haha it's a slice of Tata.

Took a friend there for lunch. She was very pleased with the meal. The batter on the fish was nice and crispy and the fish was nice and soft . The chips were also crisp with soft centres. The staff were helpful with my friends allergies which she found reassuring.

Ordered online for collection but still had to wait 15 minutes. Ordered one large haddock, medium chips, two sausages, one battered sausage, one gravy, one peas and one bread roll. The price was £24 which we thought was very expensive but maybe we haven't been out much lately. Very disappointed, the chips were anaemic and had a strange smell, they had no large haddock so substituted with two small ones. The fish were dry and covered in a very small amount of soggy batter again anaemic looking. The two sausages went down well with our dogs, and the battered sausage was good. The gravy was overly salty but the peas were good. Most of it went in the bin apart from the two sausages and peas. This place used to be very good and the fish always came with a small pot of tartar sauce but that's no longer also. Will not return, feel like we were ripped off! We don't mind paying more if the quality is there but unfortunately it was nowhere to be seen.

Couldn't fault the place. I really enjoyed the fish and chips. They offer a click and collect service too.

Waited 50 minutes for food yesterday .poor lad was doing his best .Not enough staff and they ran out of sides. Definitely won't be back

We waited 40 mins and we’re not the only people others had been waiting an hour then told they didn’t have some of the things we ordered felt sorry for the young lad on the till I asked to speak to a senior member of staff and was told there was non asked for a number to call told there was not one cost £25 pound and told pretty much there was nothing they could do never going again also was told it was a busy day that’s the reason was about 6 people in there and what do you expect on a Sunday evening on a nice day it’s going to be busy

Hike in prices but way above average price increases nationally. Terrible service. Scampi box meal (9 pieces) has risen massively and no longer include a pot of tartar, instead they wanted £0.85p for a very small portion which takes the cost of the meal to £10.15P The meal on this occasion was quite nice with only one rotten chip, a far cry from the last visit. The place looks and feels grubby with probably one of the miserable cooks ever, a total dim wit. Get the place cleaned, it's a greasy dive and very unappealing. I've heard Blenhiem Drive is very good by all accounts. I shall not be back and I'm sure from what I'm reading on hear and social media, the dive will be gone soon.

Wasn’t too bad actually, wasn’t expecting much from people I know who have been here and the reviews but it was ok. Bit on the expensive side but not many chippies open on Sundays round here so not much choice. Fish was decent and the chips were ok, would defo go again

We are regular visitors to George's and have always been happy with 5*review. On this occasion though we were slightly disappointed. The shop door doesn't close so we experienced an icy draft whilst waiting for the food and our plan to sit in was reconsidered. I ordered 1 small meal deal and a large. When we opened the cartons in the car we were unable to decide which one was small or large. The good news is that the food was as good as ever. Not sure if we should be pleased with the size of the small meal or disappointed with the large!

0 stars. Rude staff. I know it's a chippy, buttt everything was mad greasy. Went here because my usual one (allestree fish bar) was closed for a well earned Christmas holiday, seriously two Grinches serving. Also, she cleaned the floor...and didn't wash her hands before making the food. Place could do with a deeeeep clean, of surfaces and staff. Unfortunately a better bet for decent chip shop food service and atmosphere is to go to allestree fish bar, decent people, family affair, high quality fish, and it feels healthier.

Probably the worst I've ever had and by no means cheap. Chips looked like they were days old, dry and moldy. Especially liked the green one.

Really disappointed with the visit last week. The lunch meals have increased in price which I guess Is understandable but 85p for a mini pot of ketchup is just ridiculous. They were clearly filled on site not pre bought. The tables have returned but it was cold and I don’t think they want you to use them as there are only 3 chairs to a table. We shall not be visiting for a while and couldn’t even get a hot drink.

Horribly unfriendly atmosphere inside the shop. The young girl with dark hair and glasses (with an utterly miserable expression) behind the counter did not acknowledge me waiting in line, so I gladly left without parting with a penny. Good customer service is clearly required here. Not to mention it was very overpriced, and inconveniently only accepts cash, which is hardly a hygenic option in modern times. Also, almost all the seating has been stripped from inside, taking away all its past hospitality.

Now charging £5.05 for medium chips with a bit of curry sauce . No more for me then.

2nd time I've ordered on line and had to wait, even though they send a message to say it's ready. Then treated to a small portion of cold chips, and a sarcastic thank you for complaining. That's why it's 4 star....

Seems what you get here depends on the staff on the day. Two weeks ago had excellent cod and chips meals served in reasonable time but this week the batter on the cod was 'soft' and the chips were white and greasy. Obviously because they were busy with orders they had not been in the fryer long enough. You would think on a Saturday teatime there would be a constant flow of most things but there were about 7 people waiting for orders when we entered.

The recipe must have changed for the batter (not better) because it was a different colour and texture...and tasteless. Did not eat any of it and the haddock was small and rubbery. Chips were soggy and greasy. Will stop going there.

First time visiting this George's and we will never be going back! Food was okay, but staffs attitude towards customers is not having someone serving who has literally 0 people skills is not the way to go. Customer service is not hard to do be polite to everyone but when you give people attitude because of mistakes you made without apologising is not okay waiting 30 mins fordood which you admitted takes 12 to cook due to thedact that you gave it someone else is ridiculous. Witnessed the same attitude to an elderly lady because you doubled her order, Whoever runs this branch either get the staff customer service training ot completely change them!

Utter rubbish! Had 2 small cod, 2 sausages,large chips 1 peas 1 beans. Just under£25 cod looked like it was fresh out of a youngs cardboard packet, small wafer thin. Chips were soggy virtually impossible to separate into 4 portions we ended up with about 10 mushed up chips each. Certainly won't be going back!

Second time in the last 4 weeks we have used George’s - like to go there because they cook fresh. However, both times now chips have been really soggy! Potato seems cooked but chips pale in colour and greasy - not sure if they’ve been cooked at the right temperature? Very disappointing when you’re spending £25 plus each time!

Absolute rubbish, I was given 2 periods of what can only be described a kids meals. I didn't realise this until I got home though. Drove all the way back for the arrogant individual who originally served me too do his best to ignore me. He was the worst person I've ever been served by. Then they tried to make it hey were doing me a favour by giving me a full portion. They are really getting bad now. They used to be a great takeaway for fish and chips. They are now comfortably one of the worst. Avoid this place and take your hard earned cash elsewhere. My only regret is that I didn't take photos to put up on here!

Having been living away from the Midland for a long while, my wife and I ordered cod and chips from George’s, Toton. When we got home we found one cod was ok, the other was same length, width but very thin, like a piece of plaice. The chips were outrageous, with the vast majority of them being small off-cuts of potato and batter.

Appalled - wrong order and awful value for money. We used George’s through lockdown and beyond - it was awesome; there were closer fish and chip shops to Hathern but this was worth the extra effort. We were looking forward to fish and fizz for a friends birthday and it went wrong. The pre-ordered and paid for order was wrong - over £50 spent and large fish and chips were missing AND the portion sizes were shocking. I know there is a cost of crisis living but have potatoes really gone up that much!! My wife had the 2 fish goujon meal and we counted 11 chips (not a typo, 11 chips!). The other meals were not much better. What’s gone wrong. Not sure if it’s changed hands or it was just a bad night but dear oh dear. In truth the quality was fine but where was it all. Back to Charnwood for now until George’s can rediscover what made it such a great place. PS: please ensure the refund for the missing meal is processed as soon as possible and be sure to add some extra on for everyone’ missing chips ☹️

2017 review.....Good food, they are a bit mean on the portions of chips, when you buy a large you expect a large ! July 2022 update.... Revised prices, big increase. portions shrunk lunchtime specials no longer value for money.., under new ownership not much value for money other chippys better, used to visit weekly now only when desperate or at Park Farm.

After building up an appetite at swim squad for the last few weeks our daughters have made to a trip to George’s to get a take away at park farm. The portions are huge and they vary what they have, so can safely say all dishes so far have been beautifully cooked and well received. What they really like is the friendly welcome from Gracie, I feel this has become a weekly visit which they will want to continue forever.

Called in George's Tradition at Park Farm, Allestree after doing a bit of local shopping, the smell of cooking tempted us for a quick lunch without the hassle of cooking at home. We both had a large Homemade Fishcake & Chips and decided to eat them in the car. On opening the box I thought they had forgotten the chips but then a saw a couple poking out from under the fishcake, my wife's was the same. I can't remember the actual cost but I know it was over 4 quid each, definitely not worth what we paid. The chips were a nice golden colour but hard and raw inside, the homemade fishcakes were nice and tasty but well on the greasy side. As to the "Large" I would hate to see the regular sized fishcakes, it was the same size as any other chippy's Homemade fishcake. A word of advice, if you are really hungry then go somewhere else because when you've eaten here you are still going to be hungry. We will not be going back again.

Awful will not use again. Ordered a medium chips yet the box wasn't even 3/4 full only knew this when I got home or I would have complained there and then if I had wanted a small then that is what I would have ordered. The chips were horrible and seemed old like they were from the day before and just been re-heated up. Not good value for money at all.

What a shame. Used to be the best quality and value fish and chips in the area. Now a pale imitation. More greasy, gone are the old specials for lunch and OAPs, poorer quality. Sorry won’t be going back.

Bought lunchtime meal deals today ,, as we do usually when doing our weekly shop, was Discussed with the portion sizes when got home, not only have their prices gone UP 135 percent in 18 months portion sizes have HALVED !! There goes our shopping treat out the door !!!!

Called in for takeaway fish and chips and noticed that tables had appeared again so decided to eat in. Very pleasant young man served us. When asking for tea to accompany meal he told us they had stopped doing hot drinks. Understandable when unable to...

Friendly staff and good chips. Happy to accommodate allergy requirements. Better opening hours on a Sunday compared to most chippies.

Not used this chippy b4 and dont think i will again waited a while for a small and medium chips and a battered sausage sign on the wall saying maybe a wait as they like to cook your food fresh but our chips were under cooked and so many bad chips in them which should be thrown away when cut . Poor

Been going here for years and believe the owner has changed and the portions now are horrific. Large cod meal had barely any chips, dry fish and the box was mostly filled with 4 sheets of greaseproof paper

I’ve ordered 2 large cod combo meal today for collection and unfortunately the fish was over cooked and dry… My wife’s so disappointed by the way they cooked the fish really… I did even asked her if you want me to return it? A lovely chippy offering a range chip shop fare. Reasonable prices and the 'click and collect' function via the app is very useful. Portion sizes are generous; we had a very nice family tea from there.

A traditional chippy, providing fresh quality food. Eat in or take out. Also offers a customer loyalty card, gaining 10p for every £1 spent. Recommend you try the lunch menu, some good meal deals. Amy is a trooper and a very hard worker. Who provides excellent customer service.

Poor quanity of chips, pie mediocre. Nothing to write home about. Had to subside with french stick to get filled up. I am a fat lad and want quality with quanity. Friend had warned me earlier. Next time I will listen. Will go to better outlets

Regret when I opened them at home some of the chips were burned BLACK in my view had been reheated, also a lot of tiny hard crispy chips which we threw away.

Superb fish and chips. Remained so during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Love the cardboard boxes they are served in - eco friendly as it can recycled. Look forward to dining in when restrictions allow!
