Decided to have a change of morning coffee venue so drive the distance to Knaresboroughs St James Retail Park. Stanleys Kitchen is situated on the top floor of the Barker and Stonehouse store A privately owned and managed coffee shop and kitchen aka ' eatery ' , serving the perfectly cooked breakfast foods and exquisitely cooked range of light meals . I'm a very fussy poached egg eater and on taking my orders my clear preferences were noted and hey presto my lazy Sunday breakfast was perfect , garnish and all. Staff and service second to non. Price reflects ambiance, quality and service. We wont be leaving it long before we return

Thought I had booked at this restaurant but I had made an error and booked at Newcastle!Pleasant and helpful staff sorted this out for me. Nothing was too much trouble myself and 3 friends were provided with a fresh tasty home baked afternoon tea. Family run, interesting decor will return again.

We had a Groupon voucher for afternoon tea at this cafe, which is located in the Barker & Stonehouse store at St James's retail park Knaresborough. We had read reviews on here which were less than complimentary, we found it to be very good and had no complaints at all. A very cheerful lady took our order and we asked for cheese scones in place of the fruit scones - this was no problem. The sandwiches tasted fresh, the cheese scones were delicious and the quiche was very tasty. The selection of cakes was impressive. All in all a very nice afternoon tea - we would go back again.

I have visited the cafe several times and have found the staff to be amongst the most friendly and helpful there is.Its always been service with a smile.Nothing is ever too much trouble. All you have to do is ask!...The food has always been good with enough choice and the coffee has always been excellent..If you like your coffee weaker then just ask! From prev reviews I think they must be talking about a different place....I'm not sure the comment from prev reviewer stating staff should be aware of type of people who visit Barker and Stonehouse ....are we talking about class!........I think some people could take exception to this comment.....all I can say is visit the cafe and make your own mind up....Nice surroundings comfy chairs and nice to browse around the store...go on try it !

Afternoon tea, Groupon deal. I'm not going to spend a lot of time on this. The sandwiches were on stale white sliced bread . The ham was tough as...... the cakes were small pieces of lemon drizzle and the same stale red velvet as described by other reviewers, and a profiterole - all bought in. The tiny scones was served with butter and jam - no cream. The tea was ok and we didn't get any chipped crockery! For £19.95 it was very poor quality - thank the lord we didn't pay full price (Whatever that is...)

Where to start.... We travelled to Knaresborough to visit the café as it states on the Barker and Stonehouse website that they do afternoon tea, they don't, you have to pre-book and use Groupon, so they can presumably get food in for it? Then on the table there is a laminated card that states any issues or complaints to be made to the café and not the store manager which makes you think why would you need to do that, why are people complaining (I knew it was independently run)??? When we first came in the woman behind the counter was eating chocolate cake, then when I went over to order, she stood with her back to me eating cake again (rude and unprofessional). After ordering, our coffees came quite quickly, she didn't fill the cups up like most coffee houses do (or the pics on Groupon show) and the Latte's were really strong, I asked for some more milk and got a small jug of cold (useful). The pics on Groupon show nice brimming coffee with a drink serviette under cup for spills and 2 heart shaped shortbread biscuits, this is not what we got, we had none of these extras (false advertising). Whilst waiting for our Panini's we had to listen to the cook singing loudly to 80's music on the radio which we could hear from the kitchen (great!). Panini's and cutlery came with no serviettes so was given a drink serviette (small cocktail napkin). It states on the menu Panini's come with a salad garnish and coleslaw, poor cheap garnish = round lettuce leaves, red onion ring, couple of bits of cubed pepper and couple of bits of sweetcorn and no coleslaw, (again false advertising). Panini's were nice YAY. Why were the Panini's drizzled with balsamic dressing??? I know a lot of people that don't like balsamic, just unnecessary (especially on a brie and bacon). Half way through our food the staff decided to sit on a table near us and have a break, eat, have a chat and laughing loudly so everyone there was looking at them. I felt embarrassed for your company that this is the image you want to portray. Do your staff not understand the type of people that come to Barker and Stonehouse? To top this event off when I went to pay both members of staff still sat at the table, both not moving (how rude), when the cook finally got up and I asked to pay by card, I was told they would have to ring Newcastle, so they could put it through (WHAT), I was then called `Love' about five times, (I don't know you, I am not your love, ok if you work in a transport cafe). The overall image that is portrayed to me is of a business that is not working. Poorly trained staff that do not care what the customer thinks, no serviettes, drinks not served properly, no biscuits, no coleslaw, no card machine, staff running the show = business not doing well, It's not surprising. Why don't you cut the menu down during the week if it isn't that busy, why do you need open sandwiches, Panini's and wraps? Why advertise afternoon tea when you have to book it through Groupon? I actually wanted to e-mail you this review rather than put it up here but could find no contact details for Dawn. If you are experienced restaurateurs surely you realise this isn't acceptable ,there is more to a successful business than a web page. We are regulars at Fodder you could learn something from them when it comes to customer service. There is a Costa at this retail park and an M and S opening, wonder if they will have a café?

Excellent scone (grandma’s recipe) and tea out of china cups. Unlike many other cafe/teashops in Knaresborough, it’s open after 4pm and dog friendly.

Everything you’d expect in a Tim Taylors pub even though this is very much food led. Excellent cask ales and a drinking area where you can converse and enjoy a great pint.

Apparently the chef went off sick. Fair enough, I know that things happen but to be told by a member of staff that they couldn’t contact anyone as they didn’t have any details was not true. I was asked for, and gave, my phone number when I booked so why make stuff up?
