Was property hunting in Sussex and stopped in Eastbourne to have a look around and get some lunch. This was the first place we found and it was excellent. We had cod cakes, crab claws and shared a swordfish sandwich on sourdough style bread. Everything was excellent, including the coffees. I get what people say about it not really bring a restaurant and would class it more as a café which serves light meals. Service was very friendly and polite and the only reason for withholding a star (should be half a star really) is the decor is a bit jaded and could do with some TLC. Same in the toilet; clean, but a bit tatty. Will definitely return and try more of the wonderful food.

Wow…Fantastic food. Fantastic people. Fantastic service. What a gem. It’s great because we have missed visiting Portugal because of COVID. We almost felt as if we were back on the Algarve..apart from the weather. This will become a very regular visit for us.

Awful cafe. Dodgy people hanging outside. Dark, grimy, unwelcome interior. Don't ask for Coke, as you may be misunderstood.

Very friendly environment and excellent portuguese food. There is not a huge variety of mains, but the ingredients are very fresh. We had king prawns as a starter and they were very tasty. As a main we went for the swordfish, a traditional dish from Madeira Island and also very good.

It is a Portuguese restaurant, very cozy and with simple, but nice home-made food! The owner, Maria, is a very nice person! :-)

Horrible in all points of view, bad service, the meals are not even Portuguese, but a mix between vegs and something else that can't be called food. The environment involving the restaurant make it look like a restaurant in the slums.

well, place a bit confused, in front off the bar drunk people, talking to loud, if you having dinner you can hear all, atmosphere cold, well think its because they change all the staff.

I had the most amazing meal here, peri peri prawns and peri peri chicken, so delicious, fresh home baked bread, tasty tuna and sardine pates. It was a food feast for sure. I would have liked to sit outside but it would appear the owners and their friends dominate the use of the tables outside. It was still worth the visit for traditional Portugese food.

I haven't eaten or had a drink here as we the general public are not welcome it is one of two cafes in seaside road where we don't feel welcome.the usual patrons use the outside public pavement area as if they own it you need to pass by with care even cross the road .I cant judge the food as I wasn't able to go inside I find it like a private eating drinking meeting place only for certain patrons

My husband is half Portuguese so we wanted to try this place when in Eastbourne last weekend. Used to be on Tastecard but not listing on Saturday. Tried ringing for over an hour to enquire about reservation but no answer from 6 to 7.30pm. This we just arrived for dinner. The place is a typical cafe really, and if you are expecting a restaurant type ambiance then it won't be for you. Lit by several fluorescent strip lights so no mood lighting for atmosphere! However, the chef and owner is very pleasant and accommodating. Food very reasonably priced, and even better value as she honoured our Taste membership. Authentic cuisine, simply served, and frequented by Portuguese folk all evening which I always feel is a nod to the cook. The waitress was very amenable too. There is a shop two doors down, so if they do not stock a wine or something you like, she will access it from that stock for you. Worth a visit if you like traditional dishes, but not somewhere to spend a romantic evening or special occasion.

Excellent home-cooked, real Portuguese food. Maria, the proprietor and chef, takes a heartwarming pride in her kitchen, food and country. I went there for a light lunch and was spoilt with great suggestions. I look forward to going back for dinner

I have visted this little place a couple of times and each time i was very impressed with the home cooked food. The waiters were very attentive, polite and couldn't do enough for you. Wine fantastic. The sweet menu yummy. Coffee amazing. If your looking for a posh place, forget it! but if you want good honest home cooking with a nice relaxed atmosphere then this is the place for you. You can also purchase cakes like Portuguese Custard Tarts (Pasteis de Nata) Ucal and super Bock beer. I shall visit again very soon.

Dropped in for lunch while on foot in Eastbourne, and discovered this very Portuguese cafe with the television news etc obviously from Portugal. Staff excellent and food too, but just too much for a lunch! Young families there as well, so slightly noisy at times.

What a fabulous little restaurant in the middle of Eastbourne! Typically Portuguese, full of atmosphere and the service was wonderful from both of the waiters who checked in regularly to make sure we were happy. Probably one of the only restaurants around where you can savour the flavours of Portuguese wine which is outstanding. The food was well cooked, flavoursome and excellent portions all topped by a free liqueur at the end of the meal. £48 for couvert, two starters, two main courses, a coffe, and almond liqueur, excellent. We will definitely be back. :)

You would be hard pushed to find a top class restaurant where the chef / owner came to the table and talked you through the dishes, giving recommendations, as at O Farol. The service was excellent. This is more of a cafe than a restaurant, and on the night we were there it was full of Portuguese families with children, which added to the atmosphere and made it feel as if we were truly abroad. The food was good - we tried the octopus, Piri Piri prawns, salted cod, beef stew to name a few. It's not expensive - just a no frills place with good food and a nice atmosphere.

This is typical of a rural or suburban cafe/bar/restuarant you'd find in Portugal. It is frequented by Portuguese speaking inhabitants of Eastbourne and beyond and acts as a meeting place for that community. But don't be put off, irrespective of your nationality you will be made to feel welcome. The cooking is home made and traditional, the price is cheap, the decor is basic and the wine (especially the Aletejano) is inexpensive and of a high quality. A dinner for two with wine and service will set you back £40.A great place for a snack, a very informal dinner or indeed a takeaway.

A gem. Nothing fancy about the cooking or the place, just wonderfully friendly atmosphere and the sort of food that I guess if you were Portuguese you would be nostalgic for.Away from Eastbourne I get nostalgic for it and I am not Portuguese.

Visited this restaurant/cafe today with a friend and my daughter. This was the 2nd visit this month (the 1st visit being with my husband and daughter)As usual, the staff were very friendly and welcoming and the food was very tasty and very good value for money and was brought to our table within a short space of time of our placing an order. Restaurant area was spotlessly clean all round and it was obvious the staff had taken great care in achieving this. The atmosphere was very cosy and as a previous reviewer mentioned, due to there being many Portuguese folk also in the restaurant, it had that warm Mediterranean feel to it (much needed on a bitterly cold day like today!!!!). Although there was Portuguese national television showing, the volume was not set at an unbearable level and we were able to talk amongst ourselves, without shouting. It certainly had a very "family-orientated" atmosphere, as there were Portuguese families there, just enjoying their time together whilst sampling various delicacies on offer and it was not noisy. It certainly felt as if we were on holiday in Portugal in this "little gem" in Eastbourne. We would definitely go there again, as the staff were all very polite and attentive, especially Roberto, who served us with his friendly smile and courteousness.Like they say in Portugal: Muito obrigado pelo servicio excellente e voltaremos outra vez em pouco tempo!!! - translation: Thank you very much for the excellent service and and we will return very soon.

A focal point for local latino people, particularly Portuguese. This gives it a great 'overseas' or 'Med' feel and staff really warm and friendly. Well worth a visit.

We have been to O Farol two or three times now and it is always the same. Each time we had something different from chicken piri piri to the Portuguese version of Paella and fish stew. Every time the boss came to our table to make sure we were happy, the waiter wanted us to be happy and the locals made us welcome. As a Portuguese restaurant it was frequented be mostly Portuguese people who are some of the most hospitable people on earth. I will be going back to O Farol again and thoroughly recommend you give it a try.
