We always used to go to Sprokwobbles when passing through Usk. However, sadly it appears to have closed. We had walked past No.49 from the carpark and thought it looked lovely. So on this trip we tried it for lunch. The staff who served us were friendly and professional. The food was good, but nothing hugely memorable. Interesting setting - and a lovely sun trap garden.

I was very disappointed with the food. The mushrooms on toast was plain unseasoned mushrooms on one single slice of store bought bread (e.g. Hovs) for £8! I would've sent it back (something I have never done before in my life) had we not been in a rush and if the server came back over to ask how everything was.

A lovely spot for lunch. The decor inside and the gardens outside are a gorgeous place to enjoy lunch with friends. The atmosphere is great and the food high quality. A few signs would help first timers on arrival to advise where to seat and where to order food.

Lovely little spot for breakfast. First time visiting and ordered the salmon and scrambled eggs on toast with avocado. One of the best breakfasts we’ve had in a while, absolutely delicious. Wonderful little sun trap garden to enjoy it in, surrounded by beautiful flowers! Staff are all extremely welcoming and helpful. 10/10 service.

Called in for lunch break last Saturday - they cannot produce a hot cup of tea. The sandwich was fine but warm tea is no excuse. When we mentioned it, we were given more warm water, which was no use. The staff member said that it’s how the machine does it. No resolution offered. Poor, won’t return and would not recommend.

This afternoon my partner and I called for a spot of lunch. I placed the order at the count ordering a tuna and sweetcorn sandwich on brown with extra cucumber, a ham and cheese toastie, a pot of tea for one and some ginger beer. The drinks arrived and the pot of tea was barely hot. My partner took the pot and cup of tea back asking for boiling water only to be asked if she had left the tea go cold whilst we were eating. As this point not food had arrived at our table. The bad attitude of the owner left my partner dumbfounded!! How can people get a pot of tea so wrong. It’s a crying shame because the garden is a perfect setting. Shame about the boiling water. Sadly we won’t be returning.

We had a lovely afternoon tea to celebrate our friend’s surprise baby shower. We arrived to the whole room reserved and a lovely waiter to take some drinks orders while we waited for the big surprise. We were then served a plethora of sandwiches, scones and sweet treats and tea. It was so yummy! The venue was a beautiful setting for a special occasion and I’ll definitely be returning for some lunch and mooch around the many rooms. I could’ve stayed there for hours! In addition, they pulled this together for us at short notice for 15 people! Thank you Number 49 🌟

I rarely write reviews but having spent a restless night, upset at our treatment by No 49 yesterday, I want to share our experience to help others avoid the pitfalls. We booked the front downstairs room for my daughter's baby shower by phone and visited the following week to pay a deposit and look at the room. I phoned again several days before the event to confirm final numbers of 17. The person I spoke to mentioned 'the room upstairs' but I replied that we had booked the room downstairs and assumed they had confused our booking with another one. On arrival yesterday we were shown upstairs to a small, dark space more suited to a group of 10-12 people maximimum. Many of our group were unable to move once seated and to socialise. The food was nice but accessing it in such a restricted space was difficult. My niece queried the change of room as we settled the final bill and I was refunded £30 (half the £60 paid on booking). Whilst this gesture was appreciated at the time, I am left with a feeling of huge disappointment that we were made to feel the fault was ours and not the venues. We had paid £60, on booking, for a room we did not get. It was obvious a decision had been made to use the downstairs room for 'walk ins' and other guests and we were shunted upstairs to maximise profit. My niece witnessed staff being told to remove the reserved signs from the room downstairs, when she arrived, later than the main party. This is a lovely venue, with beautiful rooms, stocked with quirky home furnishings and one that I have visited several times before, so it makes our experience yesterday even more upsetting and unexpected. As a customer you want to feel valued and that your experience matters, sadly, the exact opposite of our experience yesterday.

We contacted No. 49 several weeks ago to book the large ground floor function room for a baby shower for 15-20. Having visited previously, I knew this room would be ideal for our numbers and suitable for those in our party who have very young babies requiring prams. On the initial enquiry call I requested this room specifically and was pleased to be told it was available. On this basis we visited to pay a deposit and once again, were shown the larger room and given an explanation of how it would be laid out for our group. We supplied final numbers of 17 guests. I was shocked upon arrival today, to be shown to a much smaller, darker upstairs room. I questioned this with a woman I presume to be the owner/manager to be very abruptly told there was another booking in the large room and we would be upstairs. The larger room was virtually empty! The upstairs room was completely unsuitable for our group. It was much smaller and darker. Those with babies struggled to navigate stairs and had to return prams to vehicles. There was no space for the afternoon tea or drinks to be actually served on tables. Several of us were seated on small footstools. Both staff and guests were packed in and struggled to move. Service was lacklustre and many requests for drinks or chairs did not materialise. A member of our party arrived slightly later and overheard the owner/manager tell staff members to remove the reserved signage from the larger tables downstairs to accommodate walk-in trade! Stating ‘they can stay up there now’!! Upon departure we complained. The owner/manager then attempted to gaslight us into believing we had never booked nor been shown the larger room!! I am very angered by this response and feel totally mislead. I believed No. 49 would be the perfect choice for such a special occasion, but I would heavily discourage anyone from booking here after our experience today.

We had lunch here today and the food was very good, well presented and served very quickly. The two waitresses were very courteous and pleasant but can not say the same about some of the other members of staff particularly the very surly woman who seemed to be the main person working behind the counter. She was not very accommodating and seemed to regard a polite request as too much trouble. The decor in the café is beautiful and it’s the ideal place for a relaxing lunch but a bit expensive.

I've been here so many times but never have I been so disappointed than today We wanted to purchase homeware goods and coffee, staff attitude was very poor and were told to wait 15 minutes to buy goods as she had a cup of coffee to make Eventually a member of staff went upstairs to serve us but we had to find her. One item didn't have a price tag and we were told to go back downstairs for the price (not ideal for someone to tread the stairs again with a heart complaint) We both felt very agitated, frustrated and very let down It would be nice for staff to have some pleasantries and or apologies, after all, we are the customers. What would they do without us, well they'll find out because, we won't be going there again

The quirkiest cafe in the Beacons, sat in an antiques/interior decorating shop, each room is a treasure trove, and the garden is a little jewel. I tend to judge a cafe by its coffee and if they can make a decent flat white. No49 passes the flat white test and its cakes are also lovely

Utterly spoilt by surly attitude of main person at counter who was not welcoming, neither was she helpful when we politely requested a condiment. They refused my Cash!! I said I might have to leave it then (having placed my order). To which I was begrudgingly told I could pay Cash providing I (The Customer) offered the right money in Cash (when has this been the responsibility of The Customer). I told them I’d have to ask my husband, who had to walk all the way back to the car to search for the exact amount. I wanted to leave but my husband insisted we stay. By this time the joy of the experience was lost. The cake was small and stale. Whilst the setting is delightful and the Waiter that brought our order was super polite and helpful, the same could not be said about the brusque lady on the till. If you are going to refuse Custom, try and soften the blow. There are many groups now who are serious about keeping Cash in the system and will leave establishments that won’t accept it. There are also lots of people using Cash more and more to assist in their budgeting. Ironically these ‘Card Only’ Places are happy to take Cash when ‘the system is down’. Won’t be returning.

The manageress came down the stairs & snapped at us telling us to go inside and asked what table we had been given. We were eventually shown to our table & they took our drinks order which came quite quickly. We gave our food order as another couple were seated at the table opposite. 15 minutes later they brought our order which was, in fact, for the table opposite. We waited over half an hour for 2 toasties which were very basic with a small amount of salad & a meagre portion of crisps. When my friend asked for a glass of water the waitress brought it over with her hand over the top of the glass & she wasn’t wearing gloves - not very hygienic in these COVID times. We will not be returning

We waited to be served and noticed that several other people who had come in after us had their orders taken before us. Consequently, we asked for our order to be taken and again there was a long wait for our coffee. The service could be vastly improved if the young people were given training in managing the area and the inflow of customers. We stopped in No49 on recommendation for a nice coffee and cake. The ambience of the place seemed perfectly acceptable, however after half an hour our order had still not been served, although 2 other peoples orders had tried to be served to us. When we enquired it took 3 further visits to our table to correctly serve an average brownie, scone, tea(which was now warm) and coffee. In between however we were also asked if we wanted to buy raffle tickets or browse the shop upstairs! In credit to the lady who was clearly running the shop we were offered a complimentary drink, which was declined, by this point our visit had been spoilt and I wanted to go elsewhere. Some advice as there is potential for a really nice business, decide what you are? a gift shop or a coffee shop? separate the two and don't harass customers. Finally look at your produce improve it and do some substantial staff training its clear the reason why the service is so appalling is your the only one who cares and is pulling in the correct direction. Sorry I doubt I'll visit again and definitely will not be recommending it in a hurry.

The decor of the shop /cafe was inviting and on another occasion I world have liked to browse. As we looked at the menu on the wall, we were told firmly that we could have a sandwich, but they were finished doing cooked food, including toasties and paninis. OK, we thought, it is getting late.We ordered sandwiches and hubby had lemon and pistachio cake. The young waitress was like a bored teenager - perfunctory and no hint of a smile.Tea and coffee were brought promptly but sandwiches were slow to appear. When they did they were fresh and tasty, and accompanied by a little salad and crisps. The cake was lovely, most and tangy. One young waitress was cheery, the girl with plaited hair, but the rest seemed to wish they were somewhere else. Went into this restaurant purely by accident. Wandered into the building to look at their furniture etc and we were tempted by the ambiance of the various eating areas dotted around the house.

This is a quirky but really interesting place that we only visited because a restaurant nearby, was unable to serve us. It's a lovely building which sells clothes, artistic interior items, and has an absolutely beautiful rear courtyard garden with tables, which sadly the cool day prevented us from using on this visit. The king prawn sandwiches were excellent, wine was great and there were some lovely looking cakes available too. Extra points for having made their own coleslaw, and the well presented salad that came with the sandwiches. Will definitely return, hopefully to try out the garden.

Number Forty Nine provides a lovely dining experience in its walled garden at the back of the premises. Seating is provided by an eclectic mix of cream iron seating and arbors with flowers in abundance. Meals, which consist mainly of soups and sandwiches, are ordered inside and brought to your table. Tea is provided in fine bone china cups.

I don't like negative reviews. I believe in constructive criticism because it may also be on that day things were happening or something was amiss that our experience was not as one hoped.

I had to review this place because when I visited the staff were warm, friendly and helpful, contrary to other reviews. The place is most quirky and odd but well worth a look. We sat in the lovely garden with a nice glass of wine and a great latte. The waitress was attentive and smiling at her task. I can only say don't miss this experience, just go see for yourself.

Looking for somewhere for a light lunch whilst visiting Usk, we stumbled across this great place. The sun was shining and we wandered through the front entrance to a beautiful garden at the rear. Soft music was playing from the bar, we ordered sandwiches and chatted to the guy serving from the bar. He knew the places in Bristol that we grew up in, and even had a connection to where we live now in Chippenham. The food was freshly made, well presented and very tasty. Will go here again when next in Usk.

This has beautiful cafe/shop has such potential, there a many rooms and a courtyard filled with lovely items that are available to buy ranging from wall art to lamps etc....and it is very well decorated, with top quality food and drink, the coffee was first class as was my chocolate cake.....yet as many have mentioned the staff really spoil this place. We walked in and felt as though we had put them out by being there, I felt as though the middle aged lady who seemed to be owner? really did not want people in her lovely building on a Saturday afternoon. On walking in, off the main street it do feel like you are intruding on someones property, so the staff should be more helpful and explain the layout and possibly put a little note on tables with a menu and explanation of where the main cafe area is to order your food....Such a shame.

Visited this place for the second time today as wanted to give it a second chance following a bad experience last summer when we had visited and experienced staff with bad attitudes and general rudeness . I have to say things haven’t improved . We where not made to feel welcome, manager / owner making her presence felt ... and not in a good way . Staff generally very unhelpful and very rude and abrasive . Would not recommend , food / cakes nothing to write home about . Staff awareness of allergens / dietary requirements as bad as the their attitudes and an awful atmosphere as a result of this . Not an enjoyable experience .

Arrived with friends today at 3.45 found a seat and we were raving about how lovely the cafe was, went to order and was told they were shutting!!!! The opening hours state 5pm. Staff all whispering and huddled together behind the counter, guess they all wanted to go home early. Well lost our recommendations for the future.

The food is decent but nothing to rave about. Service can be hit or miss sometimes. A bit frosty on occasions however I never take too much notice.

We came here for tea and cake and what a choice! Both our cakes were excellent and the tea nicely presented. Very quirky interior, lots of differently decorated rooms in which to sit. The garden looked absolutely lovely but sadly was not the weather to sit outside. Lots of 'bijou' buys too. Would definitely go back

Planned a trip here for a while as spotted the lovely garden earlier but bitterly disappointed by the awful (mature) woman who 'greeted' us at the counter.

Well after entering a comp in FB I won afternoon tea here. Chose the day before our 40th wedding anniversary. Never visited before. Pleasantly surprised, several little rooms and a lovely garden area. Plus a few up class retail areas.

What a great place to visit, browse and have a coffee. The interior design of the individual rooms was great as were the wonderful things to buy on the upper floors. The outside garden was also a pleasant place to sit on a sunny day too! The service was very good and we opted for scrambled eggs as a brunch. They were OK but lacked butter and seasoning so were a bit bland on the tastebuds. And ... were the eggs steamed?? Nevertheless we enjoyed the visit, the coffee was good and we bought a couple of things too! Worth the visit!

I had no idea what delights awaited me from outside this restaurant on a hot July afternoon. There was a sign mentioning a garden at rear, but no way did I expect to be transported to this Mediterranean paradise...

We popped in for coffee whilst staying in Usk and found the place very fascinating. Downstairs there are several rooms all with different themes and all very nice, they also have a beautiful garden seating area, where we choose to sit as the weather was so nice.

The courtyard garden is a lovely spot for a coffee and cake. Wish I had stopped there. Sadly my brunch was awful. I ordered scrambled eggs on toast. The eggs were not scrambled at all - I think someone had just waited for the eggs to set in the pan, unseasoned, cut the result in half and dumped it on sliced bread. Ugh. They really need to buy decent bread - and the average 10 year old could scramble an egg properly!

My partner and I came here to check out the Detroit pizza and cocktails. The service was fast and super friendly, plus they catered for my nut allergy really well. Being dog friendly, we took out 12 yo labrador Alffi who had fun, plus and Utterly Mutterly ice-cream! We had the 1/2 and 1/2 Detroit pizza, a mix of Bloody Mary and the porcini mushrooms. It was DELISH, the portion was also massive meaning we took half home for tea, making it 2 meals in 1. My partner had the Detroit IPA which was hoppy and fresh. I had the Shepherd and Welsh Wanderer cocktails. Very strong, delicious and well presented. We have friends that live locally and will absolutely be back to check out the Sunday slices, bring our dogs and have some more pizza and cocktails. Thanks Lee & co for fab hospitality.

Recently refurbished and Rebranded as "Fire & Fork" promising a " a traditional American barbecue experience". No Bread available before Starters. - Pork Burnt Ends - Mixture of under and over cooked chunks of pork in a sickly sweet, slightly spicy smoked sauce. Need something acidic to cut through all the fat came with "Texas "Toast", Stale slice of bloomer spread with an unidentifiable substance. Beef Cigars - Lovely shredded beef in a crispy pancake style roll with a rich, smoked Garlic Mayo. Mains - XL Short Ribs not available so both ordered the 10 Hour Smoked Brisket. Served as described on menu. No discernable smoked crust or flavour to the Brisket. No mustard available at this restaurant. No Napkins provided, asked twice, got some from another table. we dealt with our cutlery shortage similarly. No water provided when requested. Inexperience of the staff evident but more than made up for by their enthusiasm and wish to please. Two Starters, Two Mains, Three pints and a Short / Mixer - £92. Option to add tip to card payment. Cash tip direct to server. This place has lots of potential but needs to overcome teething problems before one will consider a return
