Number Forty Two Restaurant & Kitchen in Argyll & Bute

Having been driving all day, I happened to pass by 42 whilst walking the town. Menu looked good so booked a table. Seriously one of the nicest meals I've had in ages. The staff were extremely friendly and pleasant and music was perfect for the evening. Food was 10's on every dish. Throughly enjoyed my time there. Thanks guys

We had breakfast at number forty two and enjoyed it immensely. The lovely little touches (tablet with the receipt) were incredibly well received. We will be rushing back the second we are back in Campbeltown.

A nice seafood restaurant. A small selection of really nice looking dishes, it was a tough decision because I wanted to try them all. It was pretty busy, but the waitress fit us in, service was prompt and friendly. The food was good, the chef letting the ingredients shine through. The smoked platter was very good. Never tried smoked mussels before, but will do again. The gravlax was very good too. I wasn't a big of the whisky & onion chutney though, didn't really bring anything to the party (for my palate). All in all a really good meal.

Had a really great time here. Friendly staff and the food was excellent. Also accommodated our dog which was good.

Outstanding food and amazing service from John. Nowhere else in Campbelltown would allow our dogs in and also had a decent gluten feee menu. John welcomed us and the dogs. Gave outstanding service and the food was lovely. Not cheap but worth every penny. Lovely clean modern restaurant. Will come back every time I visit Campbelltown now.

I am a vegetarian which is tricky in a seafood place - they offered 2 options when we booked . On seating the very helpful waiter suggested the chef could do a arancini off the cuff - the most delicious I have ever tasted ( miles better than Jamie Oliver ) great find

Best fish I’ve ever had. Not quite enough mushy peas but I asked for a few more but arrived a tad too later than expected. I would definitely eat here again. The tartare sauce was really good too and this beetroot salad sides was delicious but I couldn’t eat it again because my teeth are not the greatest but that’s a whole other story

A very poor and embarrassing experience at no42. Two friends visiting Campbeltown and I out for dinner on a Friday evening. Two of us ordered Duck which was served so rare it was inedible. Certainly could not cut through it. Vegetables etc were fine. Fish and chips were lovely. The sweet option on the night was “When life throws you lemons”, which was a selection of four mini sweets which included a sorbet which was the only item that had lemon in it. The rest looked lovely but we’re bland. Did receive an apology from waitress who was lovely if stressed. Appeared to be under staffed for restaurant guests.

A gem of Cambeltown and highly recommend. Staff are absolutely lovely, welcoming and friendly. Everyone gets bread & butter to start with, which, is.phenomonal! They make it themselves and I wish I could buy it. Plenty of gluten free options. Fish curry was the star of the show for me. Surf&Turf was apparently fantastic (not gluten free) Drinks were great! Only let down was the cullen skink, due to one small bit of haddock it tasted like a creamy potato soup. Which was nice but for a fish restaurant I expected more. Restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and there is plenty of parking. Really glad the lovely woman in the RNLI shop recommended it!

Fantastic menu and great selection especially sea food and generous portions. Plenty of Gluten Free options too. The Crayfish cocktail was a big hit and even inspired some Salt Bae impersonation. Service was great and the chef was personable too, only downside was the need for one of the waitresses to sit on the floor & deconstruct several tables while we where eating. Not her fault, she was obviously directed to do so but did take the edge of the atmosphere. Overall well worth a visit.

Odd experience… Maybe it was Monday when the experienced staff was off. Seated waited … for ever….. drinks… then to order. Others around us same situation. Not recommended for anyone hoping for good service. Dishes very nice .. more $$$ then Glasgow

Food was nice, however survice was slow and the staff member serving us seemed really upset which was quite off-putting in the end. Was difficult to get her attention and we weren't asked if we wanted any drinks after the first one. So we bought less than we would have done

Can't say enough good things about Number 42 -- the food here rivals the top restaurants in Edinburgh and Glasgow, and offers local specialties such as oysters and halibut from Gigha and mussels from Mull. Seafood platter was first rate, and the seafood curry was superb, reminiscent of a Thai curry generously flavoured with kaffir lime leaves. Only regret is that we didn't return for brunch but will be sure to do so on our next visit. PS - bookings essential for both dinner and brunch.

Unexpected visit while in Campbelltown to Number Forty Two. A casual small bistro style with the ‘days’ menu on blackboards. The oysters were better than Loch Fyne (overrated) with Huge crab claws and crayfish cocktails so fresh and plenty to eat. Fish curry and a smoked fish platter was beyond my dreams. Book before arriving as you cannot miss this place.

The Lobster was out of this world! Will definitely be back to eat here again.

Very nice premium experience in small Campbeltown! Food is pricey but worth it as quality is top notch. If there are noisy parties of people it can get loud though.

We had wonderful food for a dinner there. A mix of seafood and game, fishes... Everyone was satisfied with what they got, quality was there. Service started a bit cold but got much better with time. Would definitely come again.

Came here for brunch in February, lovely menu, highly recommend the Benedict and the scone.

It was so cold inside that we left before we even ordered. Unfortunate that energy costs are probably so high that it is cost prohibitive to heat a big space, but on the other hand, we can’t shiver through a meal and enjoy it.

We had a fantastic meal in this restaurant last night! Can not hype enough about how brilliant it was! Cannot wait to come back!! Thanks again to all the staff!

Fantastic find! Great seafood, delicious fish and chips and sea-bass. Came here for a lunch with two toddlers in tow, although not a kiddy restaurant they were really helpful, friendly and made us feel at home. Chef also came out at the end of the meal, which was a nice touch. Hope can come back when we next visit Kintyre to sample more on the menu!

I've been coming to Campbeltown once a year for my whole life and while the food options have always been pretty good it's nice to have a place you can really treat yourself. My girlfriend and I loved our meal here, this is fine dining at a reasonable price and some of the best seafood we have ever had. The service staff were lovely and the food was excellent, a true gem for of a restaurant that I hope is around for all my future visits. We started with the muscles and crab claws, both of which were lovely and fresh and tasted amazing. My girlfriend had the halibut which was perfectly cooked. I had lamb as I had a seafood heavy weekend but it was beautifully tender and the accompanying potatoes were among the best thing I've ever tasted. I look forward to dining here for many years to come.

An excellent venue and a fantastic addition to Campbeltown. I will be putting many a group of golfers in here. Staff lovely, efficient and friendly. Couple that with good food and they have a winning venue.

I find it difficult to fault this little jem. Who would have thought in the far off the track in Scotland I would have found this superb restaurant. The service was excellent attentive but not pushing. The food was first class and well presented. I would recommend a visit if you are in the mull of kintyre. Thank you to you and your staff.

If you want seafood, you will simply not find a better meal or a better restaurant. My wife joined me for what we both agreed were probably the best oysters we've ever had anywhere in the world; they were large, fresh, and the house sauce and cardamom pickles were the perfect complement. I then followed with the tuna 'sashimi', which was accompanied by the best preparation of wasabi I've experienced outside of (sadly now-defunct due to covid) Sake No Hana, formerly of London. The beautiful slice of fish was treated perfectly, and the accompanying flavors peerless. I finished with what had led me there to begin with: the Cullen Skink. I frankly haven't had a bowl anywhere in Scotland that was anything but delicious, but I am now at a disadvantage for all future endeavors with the iconic soup. There is, in my personal opinion, no possibility for better. I aim to prove myself wrong, if by no other means than a return to Campbeltown as soon as I am able to eagerly take a seat at Number 42. I was so impressed by the food that I almost forgot to mention my delightfully helpful server, Chelsea.

Great seafood in fab surroundings, not to be missed.

The owner was fantastic, when I asked if he could do the sea bass without butter it was no problem he did it in olive oil and the fish was wonderful. They made my wife who is vegetarian a resotto, she said it was the best resotto she had ever had. Would highly recommend.

We visit regularly and cannot rate the food highly enough. It's always delicious and beautifully presented. A group of four of us recently tried the Valentine's menu. It was delicious and great value. An awesome job as always.

Fantastic find! On the main street in Campbeltown . As a visitor looking for a light seafood lunch, I popped into a fishmongers and asked for a recommendation. I had two starters: a plate of local Langoustines in garlic butter followed by seared Scallops. The cooking and presentation were excellent. Can't recommend this place highly enough. Big shout out to the lady at the fishmongers!

5star food, great service, menu is best in town and not overly expensive at all for the quality offered. Locally sourced produce is absolutely delicious. Highly recommended.

Lovely food and excellent service

All restaurants should aspire to the standards of food served here. Can't recommend this place enough. Dont go once, go twice, three times. At a reasonable price I doubt this food could be bettered. If you're into food then this is the restaurant for you but if you're into pub grub it's not for you.

The food was excellent in every detail from presentation to flavour. The staff were very professional, well turned out and attentive without being intrusive. The ambience was relaxed and welcoming. We had a delightful lunch and unreservedly recommend this restaurant.

What a lovely restaurant, went for lunch yesterday 25th August, had langoustines which were beautiful and the lamb off the special board,the for of us had fabulous service. The mother in law commented that that was the best fish and chips she had ever had. Well done guys we will return.

Absolutely stunning decor, staff and food, loved the homemade butter and bread lovely touch. Didn't mention at the time my other half a chef. He was very impressed. Lovely menu something for everyone. Waitress Nicole I believe but she was called Florence by another member of staff. It was my birthday weekend away, and finished it off perfectly. We will be back I promise. Overall a wonderful experience.

Our first visit to Campbeltown brought us here for Sunday lunch, the meats were nicely cooked with a nice selection - beef, turkey and lamb. The price of the lunch was also good - only £24 for 2 courses, service was great and very friendly, well certainly return next time here.

My wife an I visited tonight had mixed views her starter was ok mine was excellent, her main was fish curry and was a super dish mine was a special pasta and flavour was ok but a bit bland. Everything was excellently cooked but didn’t feel it was the level ‘hearsay’ says it is . Service was ok but also felt a bit “get them in and get them out” to be fair not helped by face masks but it felt like staff don’t want to make a visiting customer “experience “ . Good but not great all in all .

Our first visit and we were very impressed. From the lunch menu I had the vegetable curry and my wife had the lobster macaroni and cheese, both really delicious. Friendly service too. It's great to have a new dining option in Campbeltown, recommended

Absolutely Outstanding, food, service ambiance. We were blown away by the quality of this experience.

Went for dinner while in Campbeltown, what a place. Menu was based on what fish was available that day so it did change slightly- always a winning sign for me. I had the crayfish cocktail to start- the presentation was thoughtful as it let you assemble your own starter (great for me as I got to completely omit raw onions from my version.) My partner had baked queen scallops, beautifully cooked with a whiskey sauce that packed a punch, but made a wonderful accompaniment. Mains of lobster in garlic butter, the meat was sweet and well cooked, the butter was packed with garlic but not overwhelming. The Gigha halibut was also a triumph. For dessert the brownie was slightly cakey as opposed to gooey but tasted great. And the local cheese board was impressive too. Decent selection of cocktails and wine- so something to suit all tastes. Lovely finishing touches like tablet with the bill and friendly staff will ensure a return visit. While the wait between courses was a little long it was worth it.

Had a Sunday lunch and was disappointed . £18 for one course is very steep to start with. Potatoes needed cooking longer . Just dissapointed in general

A finer dining experience in Campbelltown. I had the scallops and local turbot which were both cooked great with good flavours though I did unfortunately get a few bones in my fillet of fish that I didn't notice until swallowing them. Cocktails were also good and the wine list was good. Would have liked to get more time at the table but regulations are regulations.

My husband and I were keen to try this new restaurant and did so on Saturday, 1st May. Good location and very nice decor. Limited and pricey menu. Homemade bread a nice touch but rock hard and we had great difficulty cutting it. The homemade truffle and thyme butter on the other hand was to die for. I had lanquistines to start with but they had been overcooked and the meat was almost mush. Ribeyed steak followed but I could hardly cut or chew it because it was so tough. Not acceptable considering this course alone was £30! My husband had the crab claws and the duck both of which he said were very nice. No alcohol of course but we both had a mocktail. No prices on menu so we were aghast to discover they cost £6 each for what was technically a small soft drink with more crushed ice than liquid. I have to say that the waiting staff were very pleasant and efficient. All in all we will not be rushing back much preferring the other excellent eating establishments in Campbeltown.

What a find! Really good food, lovely setting and super friendly staff. Can not fault them. The homemade butter alone makes a visit worthwhile.

My partner & I stayed at this fantastic hotel I have to stay simply 5 star the room spacious bathroom superb bath & power shower The breakfast choice excellent Both Rob & Jana very engaging I would without doubt recommend this establishment situated right on the Loch with fantastic views 👍 You cannot ask for anything better
