Perhaps my worst experience with a restaurant. On the transition from 2022 to 2023, I booked a table for dinner on 31/12 and then attended the musical event at the fire station. I was very pleased with the quality of service, food, and the musical event. This year, I invited some friends to do the same program, which was to have dinner at the engine room and then go to the event. We booked the table in advance, the reservation for dinner was accepted, and it was mentioned that the kitchen would close at 17:45, which was strange as it was the last dinner of the year. However, we accepted and reserved a table for 4. We arrived at the engine room around 17:15, went to the reserved table, and a staff member appeared apologizing, saying that there was almost nothing available from the menu; they were out of stock. What a terrible way to treat customers. We got up, left, and searched for another restaurant, which was challenging to find as they were fully booked. In conclusion, this is not how you gain customers and build a good reputation for a place.

Nice spot, food good. Ordered a standard burger and house fries with pepper sauce and a coke. Mine cost £19. Everyone else seemed happy with food, would recommend sharing fries as burgers quite filling. Check bill as offers not always applied on items, seemed run of their feet at times but managed to cope. Book in advance

Very underwhelming. £17 for burger and fries. The burger was overcooked and the distinct lack of sauce made the whole meal very dry. Also the 'churcy special sauce' appears to be a simple french mustard. Lots of better places to visit in Sunderland. Considering this is allegedly a specialist burger restaurant you would be better going to some of the places just over the road for a burger. In fact you would actually be better off going to McDonald's in the high street.

My husband and I booked a table here before the theatre. I’d read the reviews and was hopeful for a good meal as we come to the theatre often and are yet to find a nice restaurant. When we arrived, there’d obviously been a mix up with our table so they finally managed to find us a table. The first thing that wasn’t great is that chips are not included in burgers, which given the burgers are around £11-£15 makes the meal very expensive. Our food took 45 mins to arrive, which was disappointing as we had hoped for a relatively quick meal as it was pre-theatre When our food did arrive, the chips were cold but overcooked and greasy, and the burgers were extremely small, especially given the price! It cost us £58 for 2 burgers, 2 portions of chips and 3 drinks which is extortionate given how mediocre it was All in all a very disappointing experience and we will not be returning

Very small portions. The pulled pork was fatty and came in lumps rather then shreds. I was also charged £1.50 for 4 Jalapeños on top of my loaded fries. Paid £20 for loaded fries and a cocktail. Burgers don't come with any sides either so makes things more expensive. Will not be returning anytime soon.

Returned to one of our faves and were disappointed by the change of menu. Veggie burgers used to be banging, now limited to a few boring choices. You just get a burger on a side plate, no fries/slaw, these now have to be ordered separately making it really expensive. The main being served on a tiny plate and sides in bowls made it cumbersome to eat. The food was ok but not to the old standards. No music, no atmosphere on the night we visited. Place was freezing. Staff talking loudly about customers not tipping! Hate to leave a negative review for a local business but hoping feedback will be taken on board, would love to be a loyal customer again!

We arrived without booking a table and we're fortunate to get the last table. Staff were friendly and the atmosphere was nice and relaxed. Wait time for food and drinks was reasonable The food was fresh and tasty. Between us we ordered a Brisket Burger, a Church's burger and a kids cheeseburger. We also ordered the hash browns and a portion of fries. Everyone enjoyed what they had and were very full by the end!

Went back to get best dirty fries in North east but couldn't be more disappointed. Changed menu very small portions no more dirty fries only small bowl of cheesy chips with a little bit of whatever meat you wanted on top could have getting better in most take aways in sunderland burgers were ok but not the best.could not believe the difference in food none of us will be visiting again

A really enjoyable visit with friendly service. The burgers were great. I had ‘Tyrannosaurus Rex’ and fries. Really tasty, couldn’t fault it. If anything, a bit too big !

A great experience with friendly staff, isn’t the cheapest spot in Sunderland but worth every penny! I’ll be back very soon.

Had a table book for 5.15pm (me and 10 year old) as going to theatre and show starting at 7.30pm. When I rang to book they actually asked if we were going to the theatre so they were aware. We arrived on time. Drinks order taken and arrived no issues. Food order taken at 5.30 (x2 portion of dirty fries) and was at this point told food would be 45 minutes. I said OK as theatre just over the road. It got to 6.25pm and food still not arrived so I asked and they said it won't be long. Food finally arrived at 6.40pm which is absolutly atrociously slow service for a table booked for 5.15pm... .I'm just glad we didn't order starters!!!! We started eating our food and when half way through mine, I found a long black hair in the food!!! I told a member of staff who offered to have another plate made up. I explained that it wasn't an option as didn't have time to wait nearly another hour and a half for them to come as had a show to go to at the Theatre. They removed the item from the bill which was the least they could have done as couldn't continue to eat. Will never go back here again, service extremely poor and to find a hair in food makes me not want to even give the place another chance. We were sat at a table next to a couple who had arrived at 5.05pm and were still waiting for their food at 6.50pm so very poor service appears to be the norm.....AVOID!!!!

Looking for somewhere to eat!?……look no further!!! Food is absolutely delicious!! A taste for everyone! Service is fantastic and they’re on hand to help whenever……..Also Pornstar Martini sharer is a must for couples….couldn’t recommend 2 Church lane any higher!!

Not a great burger fan but willing to try anything, was out with my friend and her daughters & it was their choice. I went for the Plucking Swine, weird name for a chicken breast ! After a wait of an hour I was served with what could only be described as the charred remains of a bit chicken and some luke warm fries, the bit that could just about be identified as chicken was so dry it was inedible, it must have spent a great deal of the hour just being kept warm. I passed almost a full plate back to the waitress and she said she would get the bill adjusted, I expected to be not be charged but just got 25% off and paid over £10 for a plate of inedible food. Will never go there again nor recommend it to anyone. Have given one star though as our waitress was lovely, very friendly and polite.

Waited an hour for a cold burgers beer was like water honestly how they make a living I never know burnt and cold that's a 1st for me

Service was so slow and bad, the girl that served us was lovely but the lad was miserable and avoided us at all costs, over priced drinks, £3 for a black currant cordial wtf?? The juice for the gin was 80p so why was tap water and black currant 3 quid??? But the food was nice

Booked this place for the BLBCBNO, food was really nice, good quality burgers and the five of us that were out were all impressed. All washed down with bottles of Peroni. Will return.

Food was really delicious good choice. Upgraded to pulled pork loaded fries, amazing. Staff were first class. Very professional and very friendly. Very covid aware. We will return.

My advice would be not to eat for a week before visiting & even then don’t order a starter. Portions were so large, I felt bad about so much waste! Each burger was on a ‘bed’ of chips. Really excessive, really could of been halved.

Just average to be honest - don’t believe the burger hype they’re nice but overpriced, greasy chips, service is a bit off hand from most the staff. Drinks are expensive too. Probably wouldn’t return out of my own choice

Four of us ate here, enjoyed the food, the chilli on the my chips was great, had a good kick, the burger was cooked spot on, the two girls we were served by were friendly and did everything they could, all around a good meal.

Four of us came to this restaurant last night for the ‘eat out to help out scheme’. We’ve all been here in the past so we had high expectations. We had booked a table for 7pm and even ordered our food in advance. We ordered some drinks and waited for our food. We didn’t get our food until 7:40 pm. When it arrived, the chips were over cooked and black looking. We had asked for no sauce on one urgent and no sauce or salad on another burger. Both burgers ignored this request.One burger was so dry there was no juice coming out whatso ever yet it was still pink. Only I enjoyed my burger. No one enjoyed their chips. We waited another 20 minutes after we had finished our food for the plates to be cleared and for us to have a chance to explain the situation (we would have explained earlier but no one came to check on our food and it seemed everyone was run off their feet). They understand and said they would talk to the manager. They explained that they’re short on staff yet I’ve worked in the restaurant business for many years and I have waited on more tables than were in that night without a problem. If a restaurant isn’t ready to adapt to table service then they shouldn’t open. We waited another 10 minutes to pay our bill to be told that ‘as we already had the 50% off scheme that they couldn’t discount anymore but they took our 2 cocktails off the bill’. Over all 2 stars as the staff were nice but the overall experience was very uncomfortable as you could feel the stressed energy of the staff.

Just ordered from here as I usually like the food when sitting in the restaurant but I wasn’t impressed at all with the takeaway food today. The burger had no taste at all, it was meant to come with cheese but had no cheese with it and the fries were dripping with grease.. unfortunately won’t be going back

Amazing food and the best chips I've eaten in a long time. Delivery was promised between 4-5pm and turned up at 4.20pm. Food was hot. 100% recommend. Only problem was it took a while for the order to be confirmed.

Been to No. 2 Church Lane several times with family & friends over the years and ever been disappointed.However, in the Lockdown, we're treating ourselves as a family to 1 takeaway per week as a treat.A week gone Saturday we elected for a lovely juicy Churchys burger meal apiece and it was delivered safely and on time.Can't really complain about the flavours (spot on as always), but the food arrived clay cauld and tbh, knocking on £40 for 3 burgers and chips to be delivered was a bit steep.I'm a big fella, but I could've deffo eaten more, so not good vfm imo.Other takeaways we're using in these challenging times seem to offer much better vfm so we'll not be getting a delivery from here again, sorry.

wFirst time ever coming to this place and can say it will be the last! Burgers were horrendously dry and over cooked and the bacon was nothing but pure fat. Literally had to pull the burger apart to remove all of the bacon as there was not one single bit that wasn’t fat! Paid £34 for two burgers with two fries portions are not massive and definitely not worth that amount of money for what you get! Would really not recommend this place.

First time visiting here after hearing good things and will be the last. Waiting 1 hour 20 mins for our food. We were told 45 min wait for food which we didn’t mind however no one came to say they were running behind or anything. It then come out and wasn’t anything special either. Every table had waited a long time as we heard everyone ask how long there food was going to be etc. The waitresses were more than polite and apologetic when the food eventually arrived but was too late by then, if we hadn’t of paid we’d of walked out

Me and my partner had came here last April and we had a lovely meal. I wish I could say the same for today. The place was freezing cold to the point we could actively hear other customers complaining about the temperature. The food not surprisingly was also cold. The chips were greasy and the burger was very underwhelming. We waited around 45 minutes to an hour for the food to come and is wasnt really worth the wait. It was a world away from what we recieved on our last visit. Admittedly I did eat the burger because I'm not one to waste food but the chips weren't something I could subject myself to. I'm really disappointed and freezing!

I was really looking forward to visiting here after reading the menu however was left very disappointed. The burgers were poor, they were tasteless and cremated and seemed like frozen £1 burgers from a cheap supermarket, not what I would expect from a place that only sells burgers!! I expected them to be homemade or at least good quality. The sides were not great either especially when it wasn’t the cheapest meal.We were the only people in the restaurant yet we waited around 45 mins for our meal and then felt like we were rushed out even though it wasn’t meant to close for 2 more hours. The staff were friendly enough and they did a nice pint of San Miguel but besides that it was a let down and I would not recommend here at all.

I cannot begin to tell you how disappointed I was with this place after seeing other peoples reviews.I paid £15 for a burger (with upgraded fries) which took 45 minutes to arrive and tasted like an Iceland burger which had spent 9 hours being cremated on a BBQ. Dry, tasteless and awful. Absolutely disgraceful and a complete disappointment. Definitely wouldn't return :(

Me and my partner visited this place for lunch for the first time and we enjoyed it however it is a bit expensive for the quality. It is the best place to go for burgers in sunderland in my opinion and service was great as the food came really quick.

We have been several times in many occasions, the food is great , as well as the cocktails. The staff is really polite and helpful, the only issue is that in many visits the place is kind of cold and since its small it smells really food like. Definitely the best burger in town.

Having been to this place on numerous occasions, I have always had a positive experience and service could not have been faulted. However, I visited the establishment on Boxing Day with 2 of my friends, we had reserved a table. When 2 of us went to order we were asked if there was anyone else left to order in which we replied no yet the duty manager still found it appropriate to make us wait till a table of 12 had placed their orders, obviously because she was friends with them. When I asked the simple question of if we had to wait until after the group she responded with “well yes obviously, what do you want me to do about it you’re the one that booked” to which I did not respond. When the food arrived I was disgusted further as there were chips that were still FROZEN! (See attached photo). I believe that this food and this particular staff member are a discredit to the restaurant, I will be returning in hope that it was just a one off occurrence, but i would suggest to pick your times when she is not in.

We visited on a quiet Thursday afternoon.

Table booked for 6 adults 3 children. We arrived on time (4.30) to a empty restaurant which is fine, but every table reserved. We ordered food at the bar and i asked the young lady would they bring the kids food first to which i was told they'll all come out together which to me made no sense at all. So moving on and 55 minutes later the food starts to crawl out the kitchen with literally 5 minutes between each meal. Then the starters came trickling through after the mains, and u guest it we had to ask for the kids meals which they'd totally forgotten about. Our mains were over cooked,dry and of poor quality. The kids meals once arrived were absolutely on fire as they'd been rushed.

Location in the middle of town. Good burgers and chicken sandwiches. Slow service. Will try elsewhere next time.

Visited here a few weeks ago, was very disappointed. Ordered the farm house burger with pizza fries and didn’t feel full or satisfied after. Portion of fries was tiny and burger didn’t fill me. Staff helpful and friendly but overall felt it was overpriced for what we got. We visited Porkys at low fell yesterday and it blew this place out of the water. Will not be back.

Tables were sticky which made us think not clean, relaxed place granted, burgers were very overpriced for what we got. My partner got the steak burger and it was slices of steak that did not even cover the bun. Over priced and over rated. Spent a lot and got not very much. Very disappointed.

i booked a table here and when we arrived it took around 10 minutes for us to be given a menu, we were then told that they had no steak, pulled pork or fish. we ordered the food and it arrived at around 7:40 and we were told they needed the table by 8:15 so we automatically felt rushed. as we were eating we both also found hair in our food however felt there was no point complaining, as there was now not enough time to be given new food. therefore we left without finishing our meal.

I was disappointed to give such a low rating but considering the lack of care the staff had for the state of the tables and floor I had to change my mind from my original 4 stars.(The burgers are fairly decent)

Been here today while shopping in town had burger and fries was absolutely beautiful and big portions staff lovely and friendly would definitely go back again

Greeted by very friendly staff. Ordered T-Rex and plucking swine burgers both £9.95 each. Whilst a little greasy very tasty and the skin on fries were really nice. My wife is gluten intolerant (not coeliac) so had to forgo the bun but cleared her plate. Not an ideal place for any coeliacs but otherwise really good. With drinks around £40 so not mega cheap but good value overall. I would go back again.

We have visited this bar many times and enjoyed it , however tonight the tv came on at a deafening level with an episode of friends , stopping all conversations at our table , I was told people had asked for it on and come especially to see it ,it couldn’t be turned down , no one was looking at it, no respect for us , won’t be going back , I suggest you think of all your customers in future

Me and my mam visited for the rocky horror picture show and burger evening on 5/7/19. Well we wish we had stayed in. One plus point is the lady who greeted us was friendly and explained then menu and evening very well. We scanned the menus for food my mam picked the farmyard burger and I am a vegetarian so was happy with the choices and went for the vegan roots which was a spiced chickpea patty with pineapple and lime mayo. We got drinks and food arrived promptly and the bar filled up. We chose a table close to the TV and speakers. We were both dissatisfied with the burgers mine was falling apart probably because it wasn't fried or baked long enough it was also so bland like no spice or seasoning in sight I added a lot of extra mayo and mustard to make it more palatable. My mam said her farmyard burger was overcooked and dry. The rest of the evening wasn't much better. Most of the people were talking very loud or were very drunk the TV was very quiet I only heard about 10% of the movie tbh. I know it's a fun night but I think most people used it for the unlimited booze. The staff weren't helpful at all when we complained about this so we left early. Waste of money and time would not return or recommend.

This was our second visit here and we were really looking forward to matching up a trip to the theatre with some more loaded fries. Due to some work commitments we ended up on our way up later than planned. I phoned ahead to ask What time they could turn around the fries for us as we needed to be out by 7.30. They could not have been more helpful. Will definitely return here again, the fries are so good but the customer service topped off our visit. We got to enjoy our fries and see the show.

Recently attended a Quiz night at No 2 Church lane. Had a fantastic night. Food was great as normal and very good value for what you receive. What made the evening was Leah, great customer service all night long and great cocktails. Really down to earth girl and an asset to the business. Give that girl a raise

Staying in Sunderland for one night, restaurant was really near to the Premier Inn and the Travelodge, gave it a go because saw the menu had lots of veggie and vegan options. The guy who seemed like the manager was really friendly, good chat. Music and vibe was great. Food was a little slow to come but the guy did admit the kitchen was at full load. Had the panko breaded goats cheese (nice and thick!) and pepper burger with just the sea salt fries and coleslaw that come standard. Burger great, fries could have been a tiny bit crunchier but I nearly took the coating off the plate I was that hungry. Quiz was about to start 8pm Thursday I think but didn't stay. Definitely would go again if I'm in Sunderland! Couldn't drink this time but would have a beer because the selection was excellent.

Heard rave reviews about this place so chose to give it a go. After looking at the amazing pictures on their facebook page and hearing people praise it, we were actually pretty disappointed. The food was fine, it was nice enough but absolutely nothing to write home about and we probably wouldn't return. We actually prefer the food at Port of Call and it works out a bit cheaper too. On a positive note, if you're after a drink they have an absolute tonne of different beers/ales both on draught and in bottles/cans.

This was our second try at trying this restaurant as we didn't realise how busy it gets. So glad we booked a table as at least 15 people were turned away as we were having our meal. Had 2 lovely cocktails and staff were really helpful. Picky partner sent his steak fries back as he hates cheese and didn't realise they would automatically come with cheese. They were totally fine and brought them back within 5 minutes. Thoroughly enjoyed our meals even though i never really go for burgers. Would definitely go back. Also really want to try the movie nights also. Would recommend

Staff were lovely, food was average and overpriced, not sure why everyone raves about this place, although there was a good atmosphere there was a bad drainage smell as soon as we walked through the door!! Won't be returning.

Me and my partner visited here today after seeing a lot of posts about the food on social media . My partner ordered the cool runnings burger and I had the steak and fries. The fries came with melted cheese and onion and bbq sauce I requested no sauce. The steak was nice xmd a decent portion there was a massive amount of fries only managed half. I enjoyed what I had but I found the fries were soggy of the cheese I like mine crispy. Partner really enjoyed his burger I would definitely go back and try something else on the menu. Just thought I would pop in and get a bite to eat. On entering I was greeted by friendly staff. I ordered a Tyrannosaurus Mex burger with Sweet potato fries. The food came quickly and was very well made and presented. I would thoroughly recommend.

Food absolutely beautiful huge portions really good Donald Trump burger love the Palma chips with the chicken strips only fault and I almost left when I walked in it smells like a dirty mop luckily by the time my food came I got used to it but if they could sort that out this place would be 100% x

Second time here food is really nice. Got the pizza burger and regular fries which comes with coleslaw, and they added jalapeños on for me no problems. The burgers are amazing and the fries are unreal will definitely be back.

We visited pre-theatre and it definitely delivered on what we had asked. The burger we had was nice and the food was fairly quick to be served. Staff all lovely and friendly. They need to sort the drain smell out and make sure that they have bottle of white white kept in the fridge but overall we got a canny burger and it was a nice start to the evening.

Great value for money, We had the burgers which were very nice. Not too expensive considering its bang in the city centre. Try it out, All these customers cant be wrong.!

We went last night before going to see War Horse.Already booked (recommend you do that) the table,the staff were really welcoming and friendly.

I've already been here 4 times before writing a review ( sorry for the delay) every time I have never been disappointed, staff are really friendly, food is amazing, and I've had quite a lot of different things off the menu, burgers are best in Sunderland that's why we keep going back, the fish finger burgers are amazing and so is the chicken. Can't fault it . Oh and the chips are delicious, the sweet potato ones or the normal ones. Well recommend!

Good varied menu so choosing my burger took some time. The food coming out does look impressive and appetizing. However the toppings on each burger we ordered just seemed to be lost and bland. Might aswell not have had cheese on as couldn't taste it. Slaw was chunky whereas I prefer it fine. Chips were good. Everything needed seasoning though and the mackem sauce didn't stand out. We ate it as were hungry but wasn't very memorable I'm afraid.

Hands down , best burgers in town , been here a fair few times now and can't recommend highly enough , the lad and lass who usually work the bar on Sunday are excellent , nothing is too much trouble for them ..

First time @ this Eatery & enjoyed it very much. Loved the quirky large enamel dishes that the food was served in. Good selection of meals bases on the theme of Burgers! The Falafal was the best I've tasted in a while. Not normally a lover of fries but liked what I was served with. Not overcooked or greasy. My friend demolished a whole dish of Cheesy Chips! We will be back for more with other friends as soon as we can.

My daughter had recommended No2 to me and so we decided to go there for a quick bite before the 6.00pm screening of our film started at the cinema. We studied the menu online and she rang it in to be ready for 5.15pm. We didn't have time for starters so we ordered our burgers. I went for the "Plain & Simple" (6 oz Burger with cheese) my Daughter had "Come Swine With Me" (6 oz Burger with bacon rashers & cheese), Luke (her boyfriend) went for the "The Farm Yard" (6 oz burger plus crispy fried chicken plus bacon) and my Son had "Fish and Chip" which was a large piece of battered cod in a bun) The all included the home made Sea Salt Fries (which I have to say were about the best chips I've tasted!) and house coleslaw.

Best halloumi fries I've had in a while but the burger patties were fairly tasteless and chips were greasy. Ordering food at the bar meant there was a massive queue when we wanted another drink, by the time the queue was down we were finished.

Good variety of burgers to choose from, quick, polite service. Little cool in the bar but food great I had the pulled pork fries which would defiantly recommend. Great location

Went for a meal for my boyfriend’s dads birthday. Booked after a woman in the nail bar I was at recommended it, particularly the steak fries. Overall nice decor, although there was a strong smell of drains at times. The cocktails were nice, and varied. Would definitely consider coming here for pre drinks in future. You have to order everything at the bar, which means you don’t have to wait until the end of for the bill. Quite busy with 2 members of staff visibly seen working. Meant the service was slower but they were very friendly. The food was nice, although my boyfriends dad had the rump steak which was tough. The steak fries were amazing and we all agreed if we came back in future then we would go for a main with steak fries. Overall was very nice, and glad we visited.

As i write this review i have waited for 45 minutes to get my burger, my first beer of choice was off and the second isn’t much better. This is really poor service would not come back here again.

Firstly want to say how lovely the staff were, we were served by two men and a lady and they were so helpful and friendly!

Ate in 2 Church Lane a few times, food is lovely and all the staff are very pleasant and helpful.

Overall it was a good experience,the service was very slow even though the restaurant was pretty quiet.a burger and chips meal with a pint of lager was £15.

My husband took me here for food recently and I was pleasantly surprised at the variety of options for vegetarians and vegans! Great to see! Had an amazing meal and the staff were helpful and attentive. I revied this place last year and to be honest i had a terriblw experience then but i decided to revisit and give it another go and I am glad I did! Thank you!

I went to this restaurant with my daughter as they had a vegan special menu for the bank holiday. The food was excellent and very reasonable £ 11.50 for two courses. We discovered that they regularly have a range of vegan and vegetarian options, 7 on the main menu. The staff are pleasant and a great choice of music. Will definitely be going back.

Excellent burgers at a reasonable price. My only quibble would be that the meals took a little longer to arrive than I expected. Two meals with drinks £23.

Visited for the first time mid week, the burgers are first class and the service was very good. Will certainly be back.
