Usually a good bet to seek a café or restaurant away from the centre of town and waterfront. Modern interior, excellent coffee and sandwiches. A hearty soup of the day. Friendly crew and doggy friendly. Supported by locals. 🇬🇧🇳🇿

This cafe is ok, and we valued the fast service from staff. The coffee was nice and the cakes. We might go again, although there are so many cafes in Dawlish we were spoilt for choice. Very nice location near the park and there was a giant car park within walking distance.

I am a dog lover but there were 5 in the other day, in a small area that is quite a few. The number of dogs allowed inside should be limited or they should have to sit outside with their owner(s) on the terrace. You should also bear in mind that some people have a fear of dogs which might stop them coming into the cafe.

Visited this cafe two days after it had been refurbished and renamed to Woody's cafe, apparently the owners have been looking to rename the cafe for a while. The new look is very bright and modern but not sterile. We ordered brunch and had an eggs and mushrooms and toast and a sausage and egg bagel. The food arrived promptly and was lovely and the staff friendly. The cafe is at the back of town away from the beach so you will need to go looking for it but it's not far and worth the walk.

Called into No.1 Cafe for a bite to eat with the mutts. On entrance were told it was dog friendly but they must remain on the floor with leads on. My wife picked up our smallest dog and put her on her lap and was told quite sternly that she must remain on the floor which she did. The meal wasn't worth the money and the atmosphere unpleasant. Would avoid this cafe.

We had outstanding sandwiches Coronation and a BLT. They were packed with high quality ingredients. The service was very friendly and it was good value. My wife says it’s the best BLT she has ever had. Dog friendly, nicely laid out but easily missed. It’s opposite the Dawlish library. Cannot recommend more highly!

First visit to the No 1 Cafe based on reading the menu outside and the pleasing look of the interior and small outside terrace. The food (sandwiches, breakfasts etc) were all decent, sausages a bit over-cooked on the breakfasts but good eggs and bacon and plenty of it. The staff need to work out what is gluten free on the menu as they didn’t know and didn’t attempt to find out — clearly are GF options like jacket potatoes, eggs etc. Apart from this, good service and food and I would visit again.

I visited the No1 Cafe in June 2021 on a family trip. The staff are very friendly and welcoming and happy to help with anything. It's not the biggest place and being in a place like Dawlish - popular with tourists - I can imagine it's difficult to get a table at really peak times in summer. The main thing that struck me was the size of the portions! I had scrambled eggs and beans on toast and it could easily have fed 2 people. The other meals I saw being brought out were the same as well, really generous portions and fantastic value for money! It also came out piping hot and fresh, but without too long of a wait. Overall I would very much recommend stopping here if you are in Dawlish.

We came in today for a late lunch, ordering a jacket potato and cheese, children’s 1/2 cheese sandwich, milk shake, coffee and cake. Firstly the milkshake wasn’t brought out as machine broken, but of course fair enough. My jacket potato came out with ham, so sent this back, the Child’s sandwich was stale and dreadful quality, especially for the price. . I had to chase my husbands cake three times. When I pointed out my child’s Sandwich was stale the waitress was so incredibly rude and argued it wasn’t, she eventually brought a fresh one but her rudeness was horrendous. When we chased my husbands cake for the third time after our food and been corrected we were met with rudeness again. We then had to chase the milk shake to be told machine is broken and what we would like instead. Then a second waitress came to say now fixed. The service was dreadful, food quality horrendous, but the rudeness has put us off completely! Shame as the coffee is good!!! I really would avoid this cafe. Other customers were also moaning to us about the slowness and attitudes of staff. I don’t like to leave poor feedback, but due to the staff I feel it had to be done and maybe management can put some training in place for customer service.

Usually I have had good service and coffee etc here , but today customer service was at an all time low. I was with my friend who ordered a panini , there was no mention on the menu that the panini bread was covered in sesame seeds . My friend would never had ordered that as she has an allergy to sesame and some nuts . The answer was that they always use that type of bead for the panini .No apology etc , The manager / Owner said did we want it otherwise she would throw it away . So I said it would be a shame to waste it so another friend in our group said that she would take it for her son. We were not offered the money back at all and when I ordered my friend something else the lady said that I should have told them of any allergies etc and then proceeded to take payment for the new sandwich ordered . The waitress brought the sandwich over and it was given in a rather rude manor . Good customer service would have been not to charge me for the sesame panini and say sorry that it did not mention the sesame seeds on the menu. I won’t be returning and neither will the 3 other people in my party, shame as we are all local. If customer service had been good we would return , but it was rude and does not want to make me return .

I call in here quite often for a quick coffee and a cake. I am gluten-free and they can usually come up with something I can eat. This is not the place for anything more than a snack but it is comfortable and popular with locals as a place to meet. It's dog-friendly too. There are a few tables outside for those who smoke or wish to take the sun in warmer weather.

Stopped at No1 café after walking from Starcross to Dawlish with my friend. Ready for a cuppa and some lunch, we chose this café as it had a simple menu offering just the type of thing we fancied to eat. Jacket potatoes, soup, fish pie, lasagnes, toasties. I have a plant-based diet and the only choice was the soup...that said, it was delicious. The place was almost full which was great to see. Pleasant atmosphere, cheap(ish) eats, enough of it and well presented. Good value for money and would recommend for a coffee or light lunch stop in Dawlish.

This is a nice place to have a drink, the only problems is - in my opinion - that they only have one size of cup and it's small... this means that to get a decent size coffee you need two and have to pay twice for it.Other than that it's a nice venue and the staff are polite.

This cafe at the back of town is a great place for a coffee and sandwiches or toasties. The selection of cakes isn't great but the coffee and savoury food is very good. The coffee here was recommended to us. It was certainly good and served by a friendly young man on his own. A top coffee bar/lounge should ooze a warm, welcoming atmosphere. But, for the self-proclaimed No 1. Coffee Shop, the atmosphere was mournfully dreary and off-putting to us. The leather-type fabric seats we sat on at the available table were splitting and the inner material was visible. Decor was basic and tired-looking and in desperate need of freshening up with a new coat of paint, preferably a warmer colour as befitting a coffee bar/lounge. Little on the walls by way of decoration. The owners (Baileys?) should go round the 7 charity shops here in Dawlish and buy a few colourful prints - we've picked up some delightful ones for peanuts including one of ye olde Dawlish- framed! - for just 50p in Snooky Trust on Queen Street. A few prints would heighten the atmosphere and help a few local charities.

I went in one morning hoping to have a cappuccino. The two staff members insisted on continuing their inane conversation about night clubs and refused to even acknowledge me. I stood there for quite some time and then headed to the door. The cafe was not busy; only one person was sitting in the corner having a coffee. As I went outside I looked back inside to see what the two staff members were doing; they saw me do so but did not bother to apologize or ask me to come back in. I would never return there as clearly the staff have no idea about customer service or common courtesy. I have no idea why the owner condones this. It's a shame, because it's in a good location and looks nice from the outside.

The place wasn’t as clean as one would hope to find it, and the food on both visits was utterly awful: tasteless, overpriced, very clearly microwaved, haphazard, thoughtless etc etc. A bacon bap or sausage roll from Spar is significantly more tasty, filling and worthwhile.

Previously impressed with this take away & decided to return whilst in the area. Had sent them a message about opening hours and the food which was not responded to. We were disappointed by the homity pie which was tasteless & the Thai pie was ok. The star of the show was the steak and Stilton pie. So the morale of the story is some things are excellent others are mediocre.
