We always come to Southwold In January and Cafe 51 for breakfast is a must, however it has changed hands and not for the better, the comment about eggs is so true, yes only fried eggs but not even nice eggs, very overdone, you are not allowed to deviate from the menu, before nothing was too much breakfast average and not very hot!!! So disappointed

We deliberately went to this cafe for its amazing breakfast reviews and the fact it was dog friendly. When ordering breakfast my wife and I were specifically told “we only do Fried egg “ by the waitress. We were rather stunned by this as we had seen amazing pictures on TripAdvisor of poached eggs. I made do with fried egg and my wife had a rather disappointing beans on toast. Perhaps next time you advertise all day breakfast perhaps inform your potential customers “fried egg only” as was our experience when we visited. I really don’t like to leave negative reviews for local businesses but this was a disappointing experience that a cafe will only offer one type of egg for an all day breakfast.

We visited for breakfast as it had varying options to choose from. The cooked breakfast was excellent with great ingredients, cooked well. The pancakes were home made, light and fluffy served with berries. Double shot flat white coffee was also excellent. We enjoyed this in their small courtyard, but the interior of the restaurant also looked lovely.

Popped in for lunch February half term. Quiet when we arrived but soon filled up. Dogs allowed. We ordered sausage roll /toasties and salad and soup with Gluten free bread. Amazing! Lots of fresh salad, and the toasty was super crispy and yummy! The bowl of soup could not have been fuller either.

It’s a favourite haunt of a friend of mine who visits Southwold several times a year - we always go there so have done the gamut of Lunch tea, supper! Can’t fault it - delicious food cooked on premises, mostly cooked to order, good coffee and great service from lovely people. They also have a curry night and other specials.

Very poor service. I hadn’t visited this cafe before and wanted to try it. Ordered our food (sausage and egg breakfast bap) and waited patiently for 30 mins. We were a handful of the people in the cafe so I asked at the counter if it was on its way. The response I got was “it got lost”. 10 mins later the food arrived. After waiting 40 mins for this I was disappointed when the waitress came over for payment and overcharged for food we didn’t have. No apology or customer service. Wouldn’t recommend here - try some of the other cafes in Southwold (better value and better service)

We had several really nice meals here and we enjoyed the food, the place, the ambiance and the great service so much that we didn't go anywhere else for our 4 days in Southwold! There is something for everyone on the menu and they even do wine etc. Find a wee nook inside or outside and just enjoy yourself....

During our stay at Southwold, it was a little tricky to find gluten free food at times but then we discovered Café 51, where gluten free isn’t an afterthought. It fast became a firm favourite. I had the crab salad. It was absolutely delicious. Hands down the best gluten free bread I’ve had in my years as a coeliac. It's thickly sliced and it's super soft with a crunchy crust. Perfect! Naturally, we went back for more. The French toast was to die for. So much so that I’ve been recreating it at home every weekend since out visit. I saw a neighbouring table order avocado toast. It looked fantastic. There’s plenty of gluten free food on the menu. I can’t wait to go back to Café 51 to try their shakshuka and hopefully we’ll be lucky enough to be there for one of their themed nights.

How refreshing it is to discover an independent cafe, so very different from all the others. The greeting by the staff was warm, and the menu offered a big selection of choices. My potted salmon was excellent and my gluten free friend also had a lot of choice. It was also warming to see all the staff making a fuss of one of their regulars, an elderly lady who obviously enjoys her time spent in this clean, and rather quirky, cafe.

My friend and I have just spent a pleasurable few days in Southwold. At the start of the holiday we had a lovely lunch at No 51 Cafe. Very tasty potted crab open sandwiches and friendly service. Therefore when we needed somewhere to breakfast before we headed off home, we immediately thought of No. 51 Cafe . I emailed them directly to check what time they opened mid week and they responded promptly saying 8.00am.So on Thursday when we arrived at 9.00am, we where very surprised, and a bit perturbed to be ushered back out of the cafe by the front of house person who told us ,,,"they didn't open until 9.00am". My efforts to explain it was 9.00am were to no avail and myself and my friend found ourselves sent back out onto the street wondering whether to go elsewhere. Another couple of would be diners turned up and as they were allowed inside, we followed on, to make our re -entry. This time we were greated and offered a choice of table. The tables and chairs were dirty, crumbs and stains clearly evident. You have to wonder how that could be given they had only just opened that day and we were their first customers. The question has to be asked about what their cleaning practices and Covid safe protocols may be.We ordered our breakfasts and I chose the avocado on toast with additional sides of bacon and poached egg. Our orders arrived, mine minus the bacon. This was hastily brought out on a separate plate. My poached egg was cold. Overall the dish had potential to be tasty, using great produce and ingredients. In reality, it turned out to be just such a disappointing experience. As we settled the bill we requested a receipt. We were told this was no problem .... but it never arrived. To be honest we lost the will to live and were just happy to leave and get on with our long journey home. Shame really as we are regular visitors to Southwold and had circumstances been better we would have been happy to rely on No. 51 Cafe as a staple stop off for lunches. But I'm now not so confident about this now given today's palarva.

Had a full English and my wife a breakfast bap, both well cooked and nicely served. Lovely decor and great music to listen to whilst eating, very relaxed start to the day. Only reason I did not give 5 stars is that they were out of Earl Greg tea, the next customer after us also asked for Earl Grey and was told they were waiting for a delivery. TBH, if it was my place I would’ve just nipped down the road to Tesco’s or the CoOp and picked some up.

As a tourist, I wasn’t sure if this place was open for dinner. I was with my family which included 4 little hungry children. I tried to check on my phone the closing time but my phone reception was poor so I thought to just walk in to ask. At 5:30pm the restaurant was clearly open. The door was not locked, the closed sign wasn’t up and there were two employees inside. I popped my head round the door and asked cheerily “Hi I don’t suppose you might be open for dinner?” The blonde lady who was working there, be it as the owner, manager or waitress, turned to me and said flatly “Not a chance.” There was no other clarification as to why, such as that they were not open for dinner or, fully booked, no “sorry” (not that one needs to apologise for having a successful business but in England, this is the standard form of polite communication) … nothing. Faced with such blatant hostility for the second time in one day (in the same manner at another Southwold eatery, might I add) I replied “Sorry for asking,” and bowed out. I grew up in central London and like to think of myself as less sensitive to the stressed responses of the busy heroes that work in the food and beverage trade; however, I have only ever been treated with such dismissal as I had today in Southwold, when I was in Australia in 2001. The reductive tone of voice and hostile facial expression of this particular employee shadowed my experience of Southwold. If an eatery is successful, I for one would more than champion that especially during such trying times. But no level of success nor business warrants the arrogance of treating an innocent potential customer with such disregard. Her response left a negative impression on my family and I. I should add that we are of an ethnic minority and given that this was the second time in one day in Southwold we were treated like lepers it did make me wonder if certain locals just have a funny way of communicating or if it was a response to our otherness. I don’t know the deep and complex answer to this apart from the knowledge that other friends who are caucasian have not had the same experience. Based on such disappointing behaviour and my own principles, I could never return to a joint like this. I would urge people who have been tested in a similarly dismissive manner to say iso by leaving a review of cafe 51.

It has been some considerable time since I have had an opportunity to revisit this restaurant and had returned after recalling the positive experience we had the last time we were here.Today however we sat in the courtyard, which felt decidedly cramped and grotty, the tables were left unwiped and not cleared of the last customers plates for some considerable time but worse was to come when the waitress was quizzed on the menu items. We are collectively vegetarian and vegan and when we asked if the vegetarian grilled options were cooked on the same grill as the meat, the waitress confirmed this was the case and seemed confused at first at our concerns and then irritated that we thought this was an issue, despite us trying to explain that you cannot advertise something as vegetarian or vegan if it is cooked on the same grill as meat. This then made it impossible for us to order anything on the menu as we could not now be sure that the items hadn't been contaminated by animal flesh and so we left and we won't return.

Visited here today for a breakfast and ordered the full English with a coffee. The staff were prompt and polite and I didn’t have to wait long at all. I did however have to change my fork as it was dirty and I left one of the tomatoes as it was clearly on the turn. I wouldn’t normally leave a review but I certainly wouldn’t serve a tomato in this state and after reading some of their previous reviews it is clear that this is not the first time there has been an issue with the tomatoes!I also agree with some previous reviews in that the portion sizes are a little on the small size for the price.

When it came to pay the bill, they charged us half price for my grandson 2 sausage £3 not moaning about £3 it was just they completely forgot the order in the first place and we had to wait, my daughter questioned it and the response from the waitress was don’t forget he had tomatoes!!!! Disappointed. Waited 45 minutes for a simple lunch dish in cafe which was only half full. 4 different waiters dropped items on the floor such as salt pot and cutlery making loud disturbances. During our long wait, waiters also thought it ok to loudly discuss their plans for their social life.To top it all off the payment was not straight forward either as the iPad used for this then ran out of battery! A distinct lack of care for detail and comfort for the customer here. I would not recommend this place.

But they took so long between courses considering only about 4 tables in and we were there well before anyone else, and considering the food would have been already cooked. The beer only 2 types were bought to us with the tins in the top of the glasses very hygienic. Wine in a tumbler and when I asked for a vodka and Coke was told they do not keep vodka ? So water for me. On the whole we were very disappointed with the whole experience. Hubby , daughter, granddaughter, (four schnauzers) and I enjoyed a lovely breakfast before setting off home after our week in the town. We ate in a pretty courtyard and really felt we had finished our hols on a high! It opens early 8am, and stays open late most nights. All the safety regs are observed and we felt very safe. Would heartily recommend for an early breakfast to send you off home or a tea for your first night in the Town. A real treasure especially as it’s dog friendly.

We have visited this cafe three times during our week in Southwold and have found the food, service and safety arrangements to be excellent. We have had a variety of coffees, breakfasts and late-afternoon snacks, all of which were beautifully cooked and reasonably priced. This morning we sat at the table that was criticised in an earlier review for being cold because it was between the entrance and the door to the patio area. All I can say is that we took to heart the advice to be kind and flexible during this crisis while restaurateurs are struggling get going again. We put jackets on! No problem. We were just happy to be able to get a seat in a great cafe on a late summer’s sunny day. But it is the coast and sometimes it can be breezy. When we are next in Southwold we will be back. We paid via the tablet on all three occasions without any problem. Thoroughly recommended- my wife and daughter will not stop raving about the French toast; but we all enjoyed everything we had.

We arrived in Southwold and of course needing a drink and something to eat , first cafe came across was cafe 51 , we adhered to Covid 19 recommendations , waited outside until table available , temperatures checked , sanitised mask on entered , a lady with blond short hair directed us to a table just inside the door , we sat for 10 mins enduring a very cold through wind ( as back open as well) we were freezing so asked to move . Which we were allowed . Our order arrived 1cappuccino £2.60 , 1 Latte £2.60 , 1 boiled egg and soldiers (1 slice of bread ) £5.00, and 1 sausage butty £5.00 total £15.20 , must admit price of coffees acceptable , but the food price was not , how do you break down the price £5.00 of 2 boiled eggs with soldiers (1 slice of bread ) , extortionate!! . Then I observed two mistakes by the short blond haired waitress, a customer went up to pay an elderly gentleman, the waitress pulls out an I pad “ Just follow the instructions on here “ she leaves it with him to figure out and goes back to making coffee , elderly man manages it , but then exclaims “was that right ? And mentioned I was sitting at this table and explained what he had ordered , waitress with short blond hair “ oh you was sitting at that table ? And grabs another bill and payment put through again , I hope that elderly gentleman gets his money refunded or he will of paid for his own bill and someone else’s , Not good enough I was not impressed. Then later a cpl enter the restaurant and although plenty of other tables available, waitress with short blond hair announces I have only got this one (it’s the table we had previously sat at the one with the through wind ) I notice after 5 mins as like us they found it cold they asked the waitress with short blond hair if they could move ? She announces she only has this one table that seats 5 and it’s booked , so the cpl still sit in the original windy cold table , then the gentleman asks the other waitress with long hair if he could sit at another table and she pleasantly directs the cpl to the table the other waitress had previously said was booked . The gentleman is not pleased and remarked the waitress with short blond hair told us this table was booked ??? Waitress with short blond hair turns round raises her eyebrows and knows she has been caught out and stays busy at coffee machine . Not a good experience have seen and noticed whilst on my visit how they treat customers I will not recommend this cafe , all they want is your money !

Really lovely little cafe, coeliac friendly & dog friendly. Staff were very knowledgeable with catering to coeliacs - husband & Mother in Law are both coeliac and they felt very safe and well looked after. Also, very COVID safe, which is another plus! Temperature check going in, hand sanitiser on tables & staff in masks / face shields. Would highly recommend & will call again.

There for lunch with the usual suspects and we had a really excellent snacky lunch. I had the French toast with bacon and berries and this was as good as I have had anywhere. The toast was delicious, crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside! Fab! Mushrooms on toast, sausage roll and avocado with bacon on toast were all also very well received. Particularly good flat white and mint tea too. Bravo!

Went here for breakfast on our last day in Southwold, greeted by a friendly young girl who showed us to our table. I had smashed avocado on toast with a poached egg, egg was cooked to perfection and whole breakfast was really yummy! 2 of my friends had the cooked breakfast, was lovely but quite a small portion. Would definitely recommend as overall experience was good!

Really delicious curry on Tuesday - fresh ingredients imaginatively cooked. And last had Sam’s Saturday menu a couple of weeks ago, which was excellent as ever . Consistently top notch food in friendly relaxed surroundings.

I booked in as we were in Southwold for my husbands birthday for the day. There was a table for two empty which we thought would be ours, but we were turned away as our booking wasn’t written in their diary. Very disappointing. Due to Covid it was impossible for us to find anywhere else at such short notice, luckily there was a Tesco down the road.

We felt as though we were a bit forgotten as the other tables that had arrived after us, received their service before us. The food was delicious and they certainly take the COVID restrictions seriously, which was very reassuring.

We both ordered the smashed avo and the avocado was just half an avocado slightly crushed with no seasoning or additions it was also quite brown. There was little chilli sauce which had little flavour anyway. We looked up good places for brunch in Southwold before visiting and relied on reviews to choose. I felt I should write an accurate review as given it was my only trip to to Southwold I wouldn’t want anyone else to make the same mistake and be disappointed. However the people who served us were attentive and pleasant.

Lovely little place. Popped in for lunch with our 3 month old cocker spaniel (the whole place is dog friendly). It’s the epitome of shabby chic - a cafe cum restaurant. The menu was good, I had Cromer crab with beetroot tabouleh, mint peas - delicious! My missis had chicken salad with (admittedly not the best) potato wedges. It came with a huge piece of chicken. We washed all this down with some tasty local beer. Service was friendly and efficient, although it took a while to get the bill sorted. Happily go back again. Really nice and summed up Southwold to a tea.

I’ve been here for a few afternoon teas and lunches. The food is always lovely and cooked well, the themed afternoon teas are always really fun and a great treat for the local area. However the staff are not very attentive, they give you your food/drinks and leave you! It states unlimited drinks but they don’t ask if you need more, they don’t even check if your food is okay or if you need anything. At one point my friend said ‘excuse me’ and tried getting the attention of staff at the table next to us and the staff member just walked away, when we finally managed to ask for more tea they huffed like we were an inconvenience. There were also loads of hairs on our food, I think they were blowing around because they just kept appearing, maybe because they allow dogs. It’s a shame because I love the afternoon teas but it has put me off.

Great meal had here on Saturday 😁 food was delicious 😋 We felt a little rushed though 🫤 our main course came when we were still eating our first course and was asked about dessert very quickly after finishing our mains🥴

What an excellent choice of meals, starters and main courses and a specific lunch menu too!! 5 of us all had different meals and a pudding each as well. Everything was perfect. Good value for money too. The pub has been decorated and furnished well - tables not too close together. And the staff were amazingly friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Probably one of the best pub lunches we've had for years.

We were staying in wrentham for the weekend and called in for a pint on the Friday and saw that Saturday was a tapas evening. So we booked a table for Saturday. Both the food and service were excellent. We would definitely visit again when next visiting the area.
