It appears that Trip Advisor are out of date. Most of the previous reviews are for No.8 Brasserie which unsurprisingly failed. It is now completely transformed in an eclective pub named The Shambles. View the photos, you can see the difference. We visited early on a Wednesday afternoon and for a time were the sole customers. This suited us as the decor is so eclective, facinating and unusual, it gave us a chance to look around. The owner has travelled a lot, maybe a little eccentric but great to chat with. Drinks were good and reasonably priced. We'll definately return next Dartmouth visit.

Went for a drink with friends and the owner invited himself to our table. After he started spouting rubbish about Putin not being the aggressor and that the Ukrainians had bought war upon themselves, I asked him to leave us alone which he would not do. So we left after a heated exchange. Depending on your point of view, you may or may not wish to frequent this establishment.

we decided on pizza night and noticed this place, which seems to be a good eatery, did takeaway pizzas. we ordered three 10 inch pizzas. they were on time for collection within 30 mins of ordering. 5 mins up the road we opened the boxes up and started to devour them. the meat and the vegetarian pizzas seemed fine. thin'ish bases and generous toppings if not a little dry. the margarita was very cheesy and our fussy child was unable to finish it. overall good but some more attention to detail would have made a very reasonably priced meal much better.

Without doubt the worse meal of our week in Dartmouth. Wish we had read the other reviews as they were spot on. Food tasted and looked like it was a frozen microwaved, supermarket ready meal. Atmosphere was dull to say the least. Really awful experience.

How we wished we’d read these reviews before we made the poor decision to eat here! It was the pleasant look of the restaurant which drew us in and gave us false hope of a lovely evening. There were four of us eating, we all chose different main courses but not one was up to the standard you’d expect from a restaurant. Cheap substandard ingredients were definitely being used along with a microwave for some of the cooking and of course reheating. We did get £3 off the bill for the over cooked Scampi but that still left us paying almost twice than we’d paid the night before for a far better meal at the Cherub pub.

Visiting family and wandering through the lovely Dartmouth streets. We noticed the menu which sounded lovely and catered well for one vegetarian member so headed in. It had just turned 6pm so restaurant was quiet. We ordered drinks and had issues straight away. They took a fair while to arrive and my cider came warm from a can! Also tasted weird... almost off. Anyway we ordered different burgers and what arrived looked like cheap freezer burgers. The food was bland and blatantly just heated up from frozen. Very disappointed. Felt bad for the waitress as she had just been left completely on her own and a table walked out after waiting 20 minutes for drinks. Not sure where the management was!

The member of staff and tables were nice enough but my wife and I were served the worst pizzas we have ever eaten in a restaurant. Supposedly hand made but quite frankly were economy catering/supermarket style ones - dried out, bready bases and tasteless toppings. I have tasted far better from Tesco. Even the French bread with the starter was dried out! We would never go there again.

Okay so don't want to be overlay harsh but really struggling to think of anything good except the willingness of the waitress to knock off items from the bill in a way which struck us practised. Not welcomed on entry and made to feel of being fitted in but there was only 3 other tables being used. Menu looks good but ends there. We ordered two mains and a child's with sides. The sides never arrived and the Risotto was bland, watery and clearly frozen veg given a nuking in the mic. The king prawn linguine was missing the king prawns (couple of frozen tiddlers in there). While there we saw one other table be told they were out of white wine at 19:00hrs on a Saturday night, who also didn't get her main course and when told it wouldn't take long she was adamant and flatly refused. She was right, should have taken her lead. The second waitress we had was nice but blamed everything on the first 'new' member who disappeared few minutes into our meal. Everything tasted as if fresh from the mic or the tin. Even the grated cheddar for the packet spag bol was that dry rubbery bagged stuff you get pre-grated and used in kabab shops when, even while drunk your trying to decide if it's fit for human consumption and how they've managed to remove all forms of taste or flavour. Another couple (of our 4 tables) having a quiet meal were without cutlery for a significant period while the "hot" but actually tepid plates cooled and no-one was around to help. In short give it a miss, if you trust nothing else I write take this one as my legacy, seriously you can do better or at least not worse.

Emersion tank next to our room that was very audible filling and emptying. Free tea and coffee quantities on stand outside not enough for the rooms. No tv just iPad which you couldn’t see when wall mounted so had to hold it when sat in bed as there was only one chair. Owners say there is a stand on iPad so no need to hold. Had they tried to use it sat up in bed they would know try using it keeps folding flat. Divan and mattress both saggy and creaky when turning in sleep. Stench of food from deli downstairs in room. Having eaten out over many years I felt compelled to write my first review. Wandering the streets of Dartmouth this place looked so inviting from the outside. However, having studied the menu at the table I found it hard to choose from tagine, beef brisket with sweet potato mash, or a rack of ribs with wedges to name just three of the main course options. But the range of food on offer also rang alarm bells as everything seemed so varied, but also food that could be ‘boil in the bag’ or reheated.

We had a few hours to spare having come down on the steam train and not being due to return for a few hours. A roasting hot day, we luckily found a table outside in the shade that someone was just leaving. I went in and ordered tea for hubby and a milkshake for myself. Both were good. The person serving behind the counter didn't have much to say and wasn't terribly informative. I would have been tempted to have a salad or a sandwich but there didn't seem to be any available and the cake looked a bit sweet for the time of day so we didn't buy anything to eat so can't comment on the food. We did notice, however, that the tables were not cleared in the whole time we were there which I could have understood if the inside was busy but it was literally empty. We might have stayed for further refreshment if we felt it was more available and that someone cared but leaving littered tables makes one wonder if people can be bothered with clearing up in the kitchen.

This restaurant is in a great location and looks inviting. We visited about a week ago in the afternoon around 2pm. We entered and one table was occupied.... there wasn't any sign of the staff. We sat down and waited no staff arrived. Eventually a young man did bring food out to the other couple and then a young woman appeared shortly after him. We ordered a meal but it seemed like both staff were bored out of their brains and completely disinterested. The food eventually arrived and the ploughman's my wide ordered was sparse and pathetic. The wholemeal bread roll was rock hard having been in the micro wave. We had to wait for a while until one of the staff reappeared. I pointed out that the roll was rock hard and asked for another roll that was fresh. She returned with a piece of sliced white bread and advised that this was all that was left. An other couple had entered and left due to there being no staff in the restaurant. Thats what we should have done TBH! not a place I will revisit next time we are in Dartmouth.

The tables looked attractive, a few flower stems in a vase, a tea light glowing. Our order was taken by a barely interested young man; a young lady disappeared into a back room. My husband jokingly said 'there goes the chef'. NO! There went the re-heater of dishes!! What a disappointment- dried reheated moussaka and the creamy sauce had dried away. This place looked lovely from the outside although we should have really been suspicious about the empty tables. It's quite a small place with about 9/10 tables and only 3 were occupied while we were there. When we went in the tables were sticky and it had quite a cheap feel to the restaurant. We thought we would give it a chance. We ordered 2 Tempura Prawn starters and a Chorizo starter. The Tempura Prawns were actually shrimps that were overcooked and the chorizo came with 4 chunks of stale bread, a lot of this was left. For mains we ordered 2 kids Spaghetti Bolognese and 1 fish fingers and chips and chicken in mushroom and white wine sauce with Parmesan potatoes and a Sirloin steak. The kids fish fingers were overcooked and dried up bits of fish with a hair in the chips, the "homemade" Spaghetti Bolognese was actually out of a tin (Spaghetti with some added ketchup) and the Sirloin Steak that was requested as medium rare was about a centimetre thick and cooked well done; it was more like minute steak. The chicken that was supposed to be served with Parmesan potatoes was actually some soggy sautéed potatoes (microwaved) with grated cheese on! The whole meal was a massive disappointment. Over half of all meals were left apart from the steak which my partner couldn't eat at all and sent back to the kitchen. We're not ones to complain but we did refuse to pay for the steak which would have cost £18.95!! And also the Spaghetti Bolognese out of a tin. When the bill came it came to £65.15. We were a little taken aback considering the quality of the food and the fact we were all still hungry so decided to discuss with the waiter. My partner explained that we were unhappy paying for the food seeing as we were now going to have to go and buy fish and chips. After discussing with the waiter and the chefs poking their heads out the kitchen... we eventually had the chefs who I assume were also the owners of the establishment come out and tell us how insulted they were!! The man was very aggressive and the woman had to ask him to stay calm several times and tell him not to speak anymore! She absolutely refused to take any more from the bill. We offered to pay for the drinks as we had drank the £5.75 bottle of Cava from Sainsbury's that they were selling for around £19 and also the three soft drinks. The 'lady' then said that it's not a, "come and eat for free night"! Absolutely disgusting customer service! Take a hint when you see the empty tables and don't make the same mistake we did! We ended up having to pay over £65 for food that was hardly eaten, threatened with them calling the police on us and left with the kids in floods of tears!!!! Absolutely awful experience!!

We live locally and were meeting friends in Dartmouth. While walking round we spotted what looked like a very attractive bistro so thought we'd try it. Wrong decision!! We ordered two bowls of soup - crab bisque and pea and ham - and two sparkling waters. The soups duly arrived and were very thin (pea and ham should be thick and hearty. It was not). They were not large portions and were accompanied by three thin slices of clearly shop bought French stick and a very small bowl of croutons which were very greasy. Decorating the plate (I can only assume this was a pretentious 'nod' to 'gastro' eating) was one small pea shoot and 2 or 3 tiny herb shoots!! There was no butter initially and we had to ask for it. The soups were not very tasty and repeated on us for the next hour or so.However the best was yet to come! We were presented with a bill for - wait for it - £18.00+!! I think that both of us were so shocked that we didn't speak then and there to management. We should have. There are several very well-known restaurants in Dartmouth so there is a lot of competition. We can only think that this restaurant will survive because so many of the potential customers will not know any better. Definitely not to be recommended and we will not be going back.

If you want to go for a really relaxed dinner with a quiet atmosphere and average food then this is the place. Food portion size good, my partner really enjoyed his crab linguine. Female waitress very attentive and nice. Chocolate fondant wasn't gooey in the middle and was freezing at the bottom and warm at the top, the pork ribs were ok and triple cooked chips nice. There was a 20% discount as ordered between 6 and 6.45 but still seemed steep when the bill arrived for that quality of food

No atmosphere, no front of house very unprofessional.

We visited on a Saturday for a late lunch. We chose to sit outside as the sun was shining. They don't have menus so you have to go inside to decide what you want. Some great options, some standard some imaginative. Our order was taken quickly and the food arrived before we knew it! It was yummy. I would say the portions are on the small side. Not a problem for us but if you have a larger appetite it might be.

We went here yesterday as I have heard that they catered for children. We were the only ones in the cafe and there were 2 front of house staff serving us. It took the 10 mins to come over and make contact. They were chatting behind the counter not paying attention to us. Again... we were the only customer in there. (1pm) We ordered our lunch, then told that they didn't have the salad bar on that they had on their menu so the salad would be on the plate..seemed reasonable. The children ordered from the kids menu. It took 7 mins for the 2 squash to arrive and a further 3 mins for the diet coke and dr pepper (£2.75 each drink) to arrive. there was a fun bag advertised with the meal.. that we asked for but didn't materialise. The chillness food arrives but the chips were cold. My wife meal arrived and again was cold. ( coronation chicken Jkt) They started and I waiting for my deep fired brie and salad (not from the salad bar) After 5 mins my food arrived with a small salad of leaves and a chopped tomato, not quite the salad bar that was advertised. I asked for the side of chips that arrived 10 mins after the main meal. At this point I was starting to get annoyed as we were still the only ones in the cafe. How hard could it be to serve us on time, together and hot food??? Once the children had finished it tool abutter 5 mins to get the staffs attention and get their ice lollies that were advertised. The arrived as screwball bubble gum ice cream...with no spoon. The staff the disappeared into thin air and the children started to try and eat them with no spoon. In the end I vaulted the counter and tried to find some back of house. Another couple had now come in and tried to order food. I had to go to the counter when the time came to leave...when I was given the fun bags for the children... could have done with those whilst waiting as colouring in whilst in the car is never a good thing. I raised my concerns with the staff who dismissed them. I paid, and now am reviewing our family experience that cost us £46 for the pleasure. Would I go back, no. Will I post this on Facebook, Yes I will...

Used to visit no8 for lunch on a regular basis it was always lovely. Was absolutely thrilled to find out they now cater for children. The children's meal deal was the only good bit! Although the prices are reasonable for this town the portions are small the food wasn't horrendous but it certainly wasn't amazing the salad bar wasn't available even tho it was advertised. Service is none existent what happened to the staff greeting you with smiles and menus?? We weren't even told that it was now all on the walls. The waiter had his coat on the entire time we were there and was also on his phone at every opertunity. The place is very run down it doesn't look like it's been decorated since I last came about 2 years ago most of the light bulbs didn't work. It really does seem as if the owners have lost interest in their business. what an absolute shame will not be returning unless some major improvement happens

This place is in a great position in the centre of Dartmouth, it looks nice from the outside but that is about as good as it gets!We wondered why no one was in the place when the rest of Dartmouth was buzzing but we gave it the benefit of the doubt and went in. On entering we asked the Waitress behind the bar if they were open and she said yes and then disappeared! Five minu.tes later a waiter appeared and asked if we had decided what we wanted. We said we hadn't even seen a menu yet nor been offered drinks. He replied the menu is all on the wall! I requested the scampi whilst my partner went for a panini and the kids chose something of the children's menu. That was when things turned from bad to worse when the food arrived, the scampi consisted of about seven pieces straight out of the freezer via a deep fat fryer, it reminded me of a Berni Inn children's meal from the late 1980s/early 1990s. This was £11 or more. The panini was pathetic over-cooked and vying for the tiniest panini in the world competition all for £8.75, oh sorry I forget you could go to the salad bar as well for you £8 also something out of an 80s Berni Inn but not even a patch on one of those! We asked to speak to the owners but were told they weren't there. It would seem from the staff they are never there!I'm sorry I do try and be fair and look for a redeeming feature but sadly I am struggling really hard with this place. What a shame it wouldn't take too much to turn this place around, for example offering value for money would be a good start. This place was poor value, poor service and overall poor.

It's places like No. 8 that make you feel you ought to check Tripadvisor before eating out; then again, if we'd known to avoid this place we wouldn't have had the comedic experience of eating here. It looked so tempting from outside, and the menu seemed ok. Unfortunately the only decent thing about No. 8 was their tea. The poor quality of the 'oriental platter' had to be tasted to be believed (including the lowest grade microwaved spring rolls which resembled something from a supermarket's bargain bin, accompanied by a few miserably wilting leaves). The stingiest droplet of sweet chilli dip was provided in a disposable paper thimble. We'd also ordered a cream tea, which offered similarly microscopic portions of cream and jam to go with a dry scone. Service was half-hearted (did the staff have something else on their minds?) and the prices - for the quality of what we had - were astronomical. No. 8 looks idyllic from the outside, but please don't be fooled. As many other reviewers here testify the food is very low quality with prices that would lead you to expect something far better. In a pub, for half the cost, maybe they could get away with it...

We came to eat here after having a walk around Dartmouth and what a disappointment it was. Came for a lift bite and it was definitely light! Ordered 2 wraps. Both could only be described as hollow, came with a side salad that consisted of some wrinkly old cherry tomatoes and lettuce leaves that were more brown than green. It's a real shame as it looks lovely inside and is relatively clean it's just the food that lets it down. 1 tea, 1 coffee and 2 wraps that were literally 2 dimensional for £21. Would. What we ended up with was a flat wrap with barely any filling, a dry stale pitta with nothing but one piece of meat, a side salad that was way past it's best days ago, and coleslaw that must have been from a supermarket basics range! The drinks were no better either, the cappuccino was more like warm milk with a hint of something. Don't bother!

We were second couple eating there when we entered (it rose to 4 by the time we left) but we went in. The ambiance felt more cafe than bistro. I ordered the ribs which were quite tasty and fell off the bone. The cheese board I ordered was possibly the most bizarre one I have ever received. As the picture shows it consisted of thinly cut fingers of cheddar and brie accompanied by bread rolls. Not sure why I just didn;t get a chunk.2 courses for 2 with a milkahske and a glass of prosecco came to just over £30 after discount. It just didn't feel that the food quality matched that tag

We noticed this cafe, and, as it had a 5 star rating, decided to go for lunch.I had to ask for the table to be cleaned - although it was not busy. I ordered jacket potato with prawns, and my husband had the oriental platter. My jacket potato was the smallest I've ever seen, and came with 6 prawns that looked as if they'd come from Sainsbury's or M&S. No butter on the potato. My husband's platter consisted of 1 tiny spring roll, about 1/8th of a slice of sesame toast, 4 prawn crackers, and a spicy wonton. It all looked as if it had been bought from somewhere like Iceland. There was a strange salad bar where you could choose items to go into the very small bowl provided. I noticed that they had some chicken wings and a few very small sausage rolls, so chose them for my husband to bulk out his platter. I had some sweetcorn, potato salad, lettuce and a cherry tomato. You couldn't fit anything else into the bowl as it was so small. I had a diet coke and was horrified when we paid the bill. It came to £20.35! What a rip off.We won't be going back.

Unusually for me this establishment was chosen without consulting Trip Advisor. The greeting by the young female was warm and friendly and we saw a sign saying 20% off if food ordered between 6pm and 6.45pm. Great stuff.Drinks were ordered and arrived very quickly as you would expect as we were the only ones in the restaurant .It was at this point I consulted trip advisor. Ouch !! Some highly critical reviews and some complimentary, but more of the former than the latter.I ordered Crab and Lobster bisque which arrived after about 5 mins, the croutons and roll accompanying was adequate. It was very nice indeed and easy on the pallet. The croutons were more than enough and the bread not really needed but it did itemise as such on the menu. Then to the mains my Fiancé had a smoked salmon and crab and prawn salad. Which she really enjoyed. The only criticism from her was it had far too much lettuce on the plate but otherwise fine.I had mussels with skinny fries and bread and butter, the fries were done to perfection and I devoured them. The Mussels there were about 25 of, they were not the best I've tasted, but they were at least all open. One or two had lost that deep orange colour. Then I had the dessert called Trio of Desserts and my partner had the cheese and bread. My dessert of Chocolate Mousse, an article roll slice and meringue were accompanied by a creation of ice cream it was really delicious. My partner left most but wrapped it to take away Our overall impression was the mussels could have been cooked in a better flavouring and all the bread was not the best. The price was more than reasonable and the 20% very welcome. Service was friendly. There were 4 more tables that were occupied when we left but the place coped well .Thank you

Following a full day out with friends, we needed a place to eat in Dartmouth, which is more difficult than I expected at 18:30. We found this place open, and although it looked quite busy, the waitress said she could accommodate 8 of us within the next 10 minutes. The children's menu was very limited, but there was a selection of different things on the main menu for the adults, and the complementary kids bag was a nice bonus. All our food was nice. Everything hot, and served promptly which was great for a table of 8. I have to agree with other reviews that the portion size is mediocre for the prices. The main courses were served in what I would describe as a flat soup bowl rather than a dinner plate, and I know most of us would have welcomed a little more for our money. However, for us, this was an evening out with friends towards the end of our holiday, and we had a lovely evening. Staff were great, and food was tasty. Job done.

Visited no 8 today. Wondered round and found this place with empty seats outside so decided to get a bite to eat. Service was friendly and the coffee was great. But otherwise the food wasn't great. We ordered two chicken and bacon wraps and a ham and cheese sandwich, you can help yourself to your side salad. The sandwich was fine, nothing special but edible. The chicken and bacon wraps were awful. Lacked any flavour whatsoever. One piece of bacon and a few small pieces of chicken and some ice burg lettuce. Upon paying the waiter asked if everything was ok, I was honest and told him it wasn't great, lacked flavour and he refunded one of the wraps off. As kind as that is, don't really feel it was worth paying for either wrap. I normally check trip advisor when I'm out and this is a reminder as to why. Upon arriving I think one table inside was taken with customers and two inside, so being busy couldn't be an excuse. Cannot fault the gentleman waiter though, extremely helpful.

Strange but quaint place to get to. Be prepared for a staircase, a handrail on both sides, and you'll need it to, to climb upstairs. Once upstairs, we were approached by a smiling member of staff, who said, "Sit where you like." The floor slopes, but once seated, it seems you forget. We all had Devon cream & jam scone with a cup of coffee each. Wow, the scone freshly made earlier, was warm. It just melted in your mouth. Once you got the jam & cream on, or is it cream & jam. My aunt & I had a latte & my husband & uncle had a cappuccino. Stand carefully for the loo, you may fall. There is only one unisex toilet. We paid and left. Back down the staircase again....the restaurant is above a shop, which is situated by the museum. Not for disabled people..though I made it with my walking stick. No car parking.

Awesome. Don’t judge a book by its cover. I arrived late evening for work over a couple of days. The staff couldn’t have been more welcoming and helpful from getting me a taxi late evening at the train station to helping me get to my work venue in the morning. I had arrived past restaurant hours but the staff were more than happy to prepare food if I had wanted. I was also given a local delicacy from a local. I’m normally a poor sleeper but slept so well. Whilst the rooms at first appearance look a little dated the bed is so so comfy. The room also spotlessly clean. The question is - what’s more important to you - a great nights sleep or a sterile environment with mod cons? Sadly the first morning I didn’t have chance to sample the breakfast- I didn’t have time to wait. They have a sign saying ‘We don’t serve fast food. We serve fresh food as fast as we can”. Suffice to say I ordered my breakfast for the following morning before I went to bed so it was ready for me when I needed it. Now for the highlight DINNER. I eat a lot and this is definitely one of the best meals I had in a long time. Not the usual processed pub food. The main(stuffed chicken with root veg and dauphinois potatoes was delicious. I never order dessert but felt I had to - the main was so good. The sticky toffee pudding did not disappoint. Overall a really great stay. Thanks so much
