I have been coming to this marvellous tearoom for more than forty years and recommend it unreservedly. As a self-styled 'sconnoisseur,' I know what qualities I look for in a scone and these are perfection. Nevinha is perfect too- always friendly and professional, an asset to a place which fully deserves its reputation!

We hadn’t visited for many years and my memory was of an upmarket, well run establishment, serving quality food. However, we were very disappointed by our most recent visit. We ordered afternoon tea and found the sandwiches to be a very poor quality; they were thin, contained little filling and were pretty tasteless. We also ordered sausage rolls & Cornish pasties, which were served lukewarm and although tasty, were very small and over priced. The scones and cakes we ordered were nice but the whole experience was underwhelming and totally overpriced. Staff were very friendly and helpful but they did seem to be overstretched. Although the place tries to exude old world charm, it’s in drastic need of some TLC, some redecoration wouldn’t go amiss. The plastic flower displays, inside and out really say it all.

I use to love going to the Original Maids of honour for breakfast. The quality of food was always top notch. However I have not been in a while but when I took my partner there for his birthday breakfast, I couldn't be more disappointed. The poached egg was over done, the sausage was low quality, they no longer provide hash browns and the overall taste was just a let down. For 2 breakfast we paid over £40 and expected better. The only bright side was the service was still good.

I've driven past The Maids of Honour endless times for probably 35 plus years , always wanted to go yet never did. Finally visited today. A step back in time , big glass cabinets with old fashioned cakes greeted you , swirly patterned carpets, plain old wooden tables , china figurines , chintz curtains, blue Spode Italian china. Had High Tea ( at lunchtime ). Sandwiches ( cucumber/ham/cheese/salmon/egg mayo ) were super soft, and just plain yummy. Bit like your mum makes you for school lunch. Lovely little scones, also a choice of cake from the cabinet. We chose The Maids, a kind of baked custard tart. As I left mid afternoon spotted a delicious squishy black forest cake, will have that next time. There was a big kitchen in the back , am sure all made in house. Also saw others having a nice looking traditional roast lunch What also made it were the super attentive and charming staff , all characters in their own right. Ladies , you were all a delight, hospitality is a tough industry but you just made the place with your warm customer service skills. I love people spotting , I work with the public myself. Same job, different environment Restaurant was full of an interesting mixture ( to me ) of guests. Can't even put my finger on why I had such a fabulous time, guess it felt so different from all the generic chains everywhere. Shall return, places like this deserve more recognition. Wished I lived closer, I'd be a regular. 5 ⭐️ , wonderful.

It’s been quite a while since we visited but I was pleased that we could book ahead now and even more pleased that nothing has changed… We had the high tea- sandwiches, scones and a maid of honour served with tea. It’s a quintessentially English experience- the carpeted floor, the frilly curtains and the fringed lampshades, together with the service of the goodies on tiered stands. The sandwiches were delicious, the scones the lightest I’ve tasted and the maid of honour…well… that’s something else! A lovely lady served us, brought us some more cream and jam, and took our photographs. We bought our friends a box of maids when we left so that they could sample a little bit of Newens. If we lived nearer we’d be in there every week. As we don’t it’ll have to remain a lovely indulgence, and we’ll look forward to our next visit.

My wife has always fancied a visit, and as she works over at Kew Gardens, and only had time for a lunch break today (on her birthday ... and she loves afternoon tea), it was a genius idea of mine to treat her to The Original Maids Of Honour High Tea. I booked a 12:30 table for 2, and was pleased to be by a window, and appreciated the old swing music as my wife is a fan. The food was delightful, I was promised a freshly made chocolate éclair, which was melt in the mouth (how do they do that?) and the plain scone was also a stand-out for me. My surprise came when Stevie Wonder's Happy Birthday came on, and I whiplashed my head around to my wife to say "What a coincidence, it is your birthday" before a slow realisation dawned on me, like Joey from Friends, and I realised that the lovely team was arriving with a lit candle in her dessert especially for her. We will be back soon.

Visited in December and managed a quick tea and cake before going to Kew Xmas lights, which was ok, so decided to go back for a lunch . Very disappointing, 2 roasts were plates very hot and veg dried out( microwaved??) , limited choice of cakes , surprising for a lunchtime ….. bottomless tea ? You have to ask for a refill, and based on strength of 2nd pot, just put hot water in original pot but no new tea leaves …..seemed one girl serving most of tables, working hard so no criticism of her ….. better places to spend £30 per head

Terrible food - it was stale and heated over. We were a party of 5 and some had travelled from very far - but we were so dissappointed - all the items were very poor quality. Very sorry to see an old pub go ddown like that. The service was poor because there werent enough people - the minimum charge of 20 pounds wasnt justifiable for the poor quality of food and service.

I was treated to a special Mother's Day tea by my family. There was a complimentary drink included so we had kir. The portions were large and the tea shop gave us a box to take uneaten food home. We had sandwiches, scones and cake plus sausage roll, quiche and meat or fish pie. All was very high quality and made on the premises. We especially enjoyed the sausage roll and pie. A real treat and thoroughly recommended. I will have to hint to my family that I would like to go again next year.

Do not go! Awful place! We treated very badly & after waiting to be seated at a dirty table, and were told to move our chair in as we were in the way, and then when we finally came to order were told we couldn’t sit where she sat us. In the end we left. It was humiliating and what felt like a purposely bad service. Ruined our family time.

Absolutely loved their pecan tart and my friend had the chocolate cake which she made me try and it was so tasty and moist. Freshly baked! The staff were very friendly even though they'd just had a big hendo party and were understaffed. Loved the British atmosphere/decoration. I bought a few tarts to take home for the next day and they were still crusty and delicious. I will go back and try their savoury pies which were very tempting. Their afternoon teas look awesome. I've read a few bad reviews but my own experience was great and I'll visit again.

We had intended for some while to visit this restaurant; we were intrigued having had a 'Maids of Honour tart', using a recipe that goes back to Tudor times, at the restaurant in Hampton Court.. We have finally made it and were not disappointed. This is a lovely place with a cosy atmosphere, social distancing notwithstanding. On a cold autumn day the log fire was welcome. The fare here is traditional. I started with a good soup, cream of vegetable, then had one of the 'hot pie dinners'. This was about as good as a chicken pie gets. Not a small pot with a few spoonfuls of stew and a puff pastry top thrown on. No, this was a proper pie, a generous slice that was delicious, accompanied by roast potatoes and other vegetables. The chef clearly takes pride in what he does. The waiting staff were charming.I naturally finished with a 'Maids of Honour tart'. A relaxing and enjoyable lunch.

A wonderful institution that has kept customers happy throughout lockdown. Delivering to elderly customers in the area when they can. Putting themselves out to help with online grocery orders as well as takeout food from the shop. It has it's quirks which won't suit some but it is a firm favourite with locals. Maids has certainly done a great job accommodating customer requests during lockdown.

The fabulous good and friendly service are drastically let down by the dismal decor. We've been coming here for years and a lick of paint at the very least is well overdue. And what's with the WC dominating the main dining area? So off-putting when you're eating. At least screen it off.As for the 'function room' at the back... drab grey tablecloths, no heating or cheerful features on the walls or flowers on the tables to liven it up. We usually come here for the ambiance but the dismal decor and chilly atmosphere let down the fine food and service.

We booked in lockdown in June to pick up individual Kew Picnic Hampers to celebrate our daughter's engagement in a socially distanced way - Rachael and her fiance are both doctors and we had to stay 2mts apart but still keen to celebrate. Kimberley was wonderful and arranged a stunning hamper and we are so sorry this review is so late - both my husband and myself thought the other had posted it. From the champagne glasses and cutlery provided to give a touch of class to our outdoor celebration to the simply delicious food provided, we thought the Hampers were excellent and it was not possible to eat it all at one sitting. We will certainly buy them again next time we want a truly special outdoor meal. Many thanks to all at Newens.

I have been past this restaurant many times over the years and all ways wondered what it was like, as I had a day of I decided to take my wife and mother for lunch. The food was absolutely gorgeous we all had different homemade pies followed by the most amazing dessert . The bill was a bit pricey but you dint mind when the food was so good. Also ideal for lunch before going and having a walk around Kew Gardens . Will definitely recommend

Treated to afternoon tea with family last weekend. Current regulations all closely followed and service excellent. We chose the standard afternoon tea but there was lots to choose from. The Maid of honour tarts were very fresh and really good. And so were the scones and mixed fruit tart. All absolutely yummy and matched by the personal friendly service.

I had today enjoyed a delicious meal at Newens The Original Maids of Honour under the Eat in to help out scheme. If you are looking for a place to have excellent food, freshly cooked and a brilliant customer service. Do not hesitate to visit The Maids of Honour in Kew.It’s a very busy place with customers from all over the world who visit Kew Gardens. Booking is recommended. The delicious food is prepared by a dedicated chef who cooks from scratch using the freshest ingredients. The staff are all very welcoming. Special mention should go to Nevinha who is always welcoming and friendly. I have friends who visited the Maids of Honour before and mentioned to me how nice Nevinha was to all of them. She’s the best personI will definitely come back to the Maids of Honour. I would like to thank The Maids of Honour for all the team effort in providing excellent staff and food. This is a place which you always will want to come back. If you are visiting Kew Gardens please do not miss one of the best places in the area. I highly recommend this place. Being served by Nevinha makes the dining experience even more enjoyable.

COVID-19:Maids of Honour was well organised. Excellent queuing system, staff are wearing protective PPE and tables are cleaned as soon as become available. Sufficient spacing for take away orders and sit in. Good social distancing between tables and there is also a lovely outside sitting area too. It accepts contactless as well as cash. Food:Love the pies!! Steak pie is a must and you won't find it better elsewhere. Eclair is lovely and don't forward to order the Cheese Straws to take home (good snack to have on your way home)Location:Easy to find, on the main road near Kew Garden. Just google it!Staff:Very professional, very nice and polite even under the current environment. Excellent services all roundHighly recommended and I will visit again!!!

Absolutely delicious afternoon tea! Try the lemon shortbread and mint tea! The delivery service of essential items to vulnerable local residents during lock down has been so helpful. The staff have gone out of their way to help local residents for no extra charge.

I visited yesterday, and I’m so sad to report that Newens is no longer the wonderful institution it once was. I was a regular here for over twenty five years, but I haven’t visited in maybe the last 7?, certainly not since it was sold outside of the family. I had been so encouraged to hear the new owners were keeping everything the same, but that’s not always a good thing - it’s looking TIRED. The carpet must but the same one that was there when I was a teenager. The walls were literally half painted, everything looked worn out. The cake counters were half empty at 3pm on a Saturday afternoon and I had to ask for each item I wanted (do you have any steak pie? Oh yes, it’s out the back. Do you have any maids of honour? Oh yes, it’s out the back. Do you have any sausage rolls? Oh yes, they’re out the back) Honestly! There were only a few people eating, no one waiting in the shop, get on and fill the cupboards! The tacky printed garish posters for smoothies and milkshakes looked very out of place. I’m sorry to say it’s unlikely I’ll visit again. I’m gutted, it’s such a shame, very sad times indeed.

As a frequent visitor to Newens Maids of Honour it has been missed through these gloomy weeks. It was wonderful to return today to have a delicious lunch in a very safe Covid environment. The staff all with visors. Everything brought to the table on trays so they are not over-handling items. Felt very secure to eat there and of course the meal itself never disappoints. Well done to all the hard working staff.

Just had the most amazing High tea here after a lovely visit to Kew Gardens. The service was second to none. Our waitress looked after us so well, nothing was a problem. We were supplied with copious amounts of tea and maids of Honours. The sandwiches and scones were delicious also. I truly recommend this place and can’t wait for the next time I can go here. Thank you for making a lovely afternoon out extra special.

Possibly the worst cooked breakfast we’ve ever attempted to eat . The service was polite and no problems there but the food was simply awful . Processed ham , a pale fried egg and some frozen chips . Indelible and the little I ate repeated on me all day , my daughter felt quite unwell after attempting to eat the full English - managed 1 sausage toast and a few beans . Go over the bridge and there are some beautiful cafes instead.

We went here as a family on a Sunday for lunch, the 4 of us ate in the bar ordered at the bar and were shocked to find we were charged 10% service charge for eating in the bar, which is separate from the restaurant, apart from bringing our food to our table I don’t know why we were charged this service charge for as we did not receive table service. The roast dinner we ordered at £21 each for myself and my partner was exactly the same size portion as my sons child’s roast that cost £8.50, when we complained to the manager we were told ‘to order a kids portion next time to save some money’, lovely customer relations, we were told that this is a chain. The place is always empty now we see why, the service is shocking, there are flies everywhere. We will not be returning to this profiteering extortionate bar again.

A lovely venue. Friendly and helpful staff. We only went in for a drink but next time will have a meal. Food looked good and judging by the amount of people in the restaurant it is a popular venue.

We have enjoyed eating here in the past but on this occasion it was a definite deux points. When you pay nearly £50 for two small plates of fish and chips and two pints of cider you expect it to be better than the fish and chips at Morrisons. Instead the fish was dry and clearly not restaurant quality while the chips were indifferent at best. If I’d paid £8 in a cafe I would have been disappointed but in a “bistro” pub that pretends to be a Belgian style restaurant it feels like yet another eating establishment that has lost its way.
