Me encantó y definitivamente volveremos!

Sorry to give the New York Steam Packet a poor rating, but as a group we were disappointed with the depleted menu and the quality of the food. OK it's cheap and cheerful but we struggled to find enough space, despite being pre-booked, and the service was slow. Perhaps the most disturbing aspect was that our bill was about double what it should of been. Obviously a mistake ....

Went to the NYS lastnight with my boyfriend. This my family have been visiting this restaurant for over 40years. We where running a bit behind on our table but Euan was great and accommodated us perfectly. The food as per was great and it was lovely to see a couple of new items featured on the old faithful menu. Myself and my boyfriend will definitely return both together and with friends. If your looking for value for money and a good meal in an intimate environment I would suggest you give it a go. NYS never fails to give a great service.

On Tuesday I returned with my son and I founs little if anything had changed it was still the 1970's steak house with bring your own booze it was greatwe both had the three course fixed price menu and here in York I couldn't get two steaks for that price let alone 3 courses. Yesterday I went back by myself and tried some new dishes that will appear on their new menu at the end of the month they were fantastic and I look forwrd to going back again. This is a small place with only about 30 covers so not good for bigger parties, it is also up a spiral staircase so not disabled friendly or suitable for people with young families great for couples and friends

Not that impressed It had been 15 years since I had went here, had been going a few times then but a dodgy mussel put me off. Waava works do, only people in the place which is small, one waitress and one bloke cooking . Redio on in the background with adverts? Get a CD on guys. Anyway 3 courses nothing special went for burger and chips, like Mickey D chips don't retain heat and wasn't that impressed with the burger. Good thing is bring your own bottle so had wine and beer with us. O e toilet down the spiral staircase was weird, only one?? Bit of a state outside with sand, needs to look a little more inviting and chances of going back are slim.

When i arrived the area out the front was strewn with rubbish and litter, I opened the door and a mouse ran across the floor in front of me. We still decided to stay (that was a mistake!) Starters were just ok, 2 of our steaks had to be sent back and chips with mains were fozen chips you'd buy in supermarket.Only 2 of 3 desserts on menu were available so I took coffee which was lukewarm. My friends didnt eat their desserts as they were awful. I don't take leaving a negative review lightly but feel on this occasion its necesary. We didnt complain on the night as had alrady told staff about the mouse and felt it would spoil our night out.

Well! Our first night in edinburgh. It took me three attempts to find the place. It was up an alley with a blackboard hidden away. The outside had odd pieces of plastic grass. Awful. We were the only 2 there and it was opened up as we had pre-booked. The chef/hostess was lovely. We had beautiful sweet potato and coconut soup. I had salmon. Looked like what I would buy frozen and cook. Chips hot and salad lovely. My husband had a nice enough steak. Apple pie was delicious. We brought wine with us but we left as soon as we had eaten as I felt we were keeping the girl there for no reason d there was no atmosphere as we were the only guests. My advice is clean up outside and don't open for 2 people to sit akwardly on theur own it was a nice gesture but not the right decision. 10 out of 10 to the girl who tried to make us feel at home. Not happy to get dressed up and sit on our own in a not too warm restaurant

I am Coeliac and along with folk from my work I had a lovely 3 Course Meal. I e-mailed ahead and they replied within 24 hours. We agreed on my meal options. On the evening before The Chef telephoned me and we discussed my gluten free options in more detail. They don't normally offer boiled potatoes but he offered to get some in since the fries are cooked in same fryer as gluten containing products. I decided on tomato salad for a Starter, Salmon, salad and boiled potatoes for main and then gluten free chocolate cake for Dessert. The staff wore gloves during serving to avoid any cross contamination. They were all very helpful. Although they stipulate that they cannot guarantee any cross contamination I was fine with no I'll effects. Would definitely recommend.

Después de dos respuestas de los NY Paquete de vapor prometiendo 'hora con los chicos y 'volver a mí' he dado después de 5 días de espera para una respuesta. Hemos reservado en otro sitio. Food and atmosphere was great and the overall experience was enjoyable. Perfect for large groups. The menu had lots of tasty options and the portion size was satisfactory. The one complaint would be that the head waiter (there was only one) was fairly shady in terms of his handling of the £50 deposit. The deposit had been pre-paid and arranged so that it would not be deducted from the final bill and instead returned to the individual who paid it, however, without telling us he deducted the deposit from our final bill and we went on to pay the full price of our meal, overpaying by £50.When confronted with the issue the waiter very shakily looked through the receipts and came out with some mental maths waffle for a while before finally admitting he owed us the deposit back so be sure to look out for that.He also claimed he had not read the email stating the deposit should not be deducted from the final ill which was as blatant a lie as they come.

I spent a lot of my childhood in The Steam Packet and have wonderful memories of it! My mum was friends with the owner and some other friends who had restaurants and bars in the area so we were in there a lot (I think she may have done the original sign for outside). It's a super quirky little (tiny!) place hidden up an alley that looks like the sort of place you should probably avoid! A spiral staircase greets you as you walk in the door (that I enjoyed hiding under as a wee girl) and you go straight upstairs to the restaurant. I'm 41 now and was last there about 5 years ago and was pleased to see it hadn't changed much since my memories of it over 30 years ago! It seems to have stuck to it's ethos of simple but good quality American style food and on a good night I'm sure the atmosphere is electric, helped by being able to see and hear your steak and burgers cooking in the kitchen at the back of the room. It is a little rough around the edges but if you're looking for something yummy in a setting that's got character then this place is the real deal! Book in advance, take friends and wine :)

First time visiting the new York steam packet, was recommended by a friend. It's cheap and cheerful, byob is handy, the portions are a great size and the food is delicious. They were good enough to open early for our group of 14 with prior arrangement, and they really looked after us. There's a 2 hour limit on tables so make sure you're aware of this. We forgot and ir wasn't easy finding another pub to seat that many people on a Saturday afternoon! Also only one little toilet so if it's busy be prepared to queue. No disabled access but again that wasn't an issue for us. All in all it was a great experience and we'll definitely be back

I've been to the NYSP 4 or 5 times now and love what it has to offer. At weekends, £16.50 for a standard 3 course meal or £21.00 for 3 courses with steak main in Edinburgh city centre... no chance will you find this anywhere else! Cheap and cheerful is the aim of the game here. As you approach the restaurant from the outside you'd be forgiven for thinking this place was a bit of a dive but what it has to offer within is fantastic. The dining area is small, nautical themed, and intimate able to fit about 25 comfortably maybe 35 at a squeeze. Set menu has something to offer for everyone. I've had steak each time and each time it's been cooked to perfection. Staff are friendly, efficient and happy to accommodate where possible. If you're expecting gourmet cooking at a cut price don't waste your time or money. Looking for something a little different? An adventure, perhaps? The quirky New York Steam Packet is a great restaurant experience for yourself and friends, for an occasion or when you want to get away from the pretentiousness that lingers around some of Edinburgh's city centre eateries. You first have to find it, which is a fun experience of it's own, but this hidden-gem doesn't disappoint from the moment you step inside. After climbing the spiral staircase, you'll be treated to an intimate dining experience where the three course menu will provide fantastic tastes at excellent value. I began with the muscles, which were cooked beautifully in a garlic and cream sauce, followed by a perfectly cooked sirloin steak and finished with a toffee crunch cake. I honestly couldn't decide which of the courses was the best. Don't forget to BYOB! You'll have a great night out here.

Do not let the shabby entrance in Rose Street Lane put you off trying this place, nor the steep winding staircase that takes you up into this tiny restaurant. The menu is a three course set price deal £14.50 during the week, slightly more at weekends. The choice is small but you cannot expect anything else for the price or the size of the kitchen. If you are looking for basic non fancy food, in the city centre, good value for money with no frills, then this is worth a try. It is also BYOB at only £1 corkage!! The chef not only cooked our food but served it as well. He was extremely pleasant and attentive but also left us alone to enjoy the evening. Be aware tho that on weekends you can only have the table for two hours...but they state that clearly on the website. All in all, you can have a nice meal and a fun time here as long as you do not have fancy expectations.

Also plenty on the plate. Staff were very helpful and 2 hours sitting time was perfect for us before we moved on. It's an old building and the stairs to get up to it are pretty treacherous so not advised for anyone with mobility issues. I remember coming to this place about 5 years ago and the same as this time it was for a large work night out, which the NYSP excels at. If you are looking for a place to cater for a group of around 30 odd with a no nonsense, basic menu and rapid service then this is the place. Its going to be a marmite venue for some though and for me personally its not my cup of tea, hence the three stars, too cramp, noisy and average food. As I said though, if most of your group are merrily on their way between the pubs/clubs in the area then its perfect.

Less of a restaurant but more of someone's front room you sit in whilst they cook food that just about fills a hole but lacks any kind of professionalism or quality. Potato skins were undercooked and unappetising. The burger was one of the worst I have ever had. Having eaten here numerous times albeit over 5 years ago I was very much looking forward to returning. I was rather disappointed. The restaurant is tiny, incredibly cold and all four wine glasses on our table were filthy and covered in someone else's lipstick. The menu is limited but I cannot fault the food itself. Large portions of good tasting and good value food. The waitress who actually served our table was fantastic very friendly and efficient. However there was another female staff member who should never be allowed to be customer facing. We had the table until 8pm and at 8.01pm she came rushing over to our table shouting at us and ordering us to leave. There were many other ways that would have been polite to have asked us to drink up and move on but clearly this waitress has no manners. She was very very rude and actually her attitude quite upset one of our party. Doubtful if I will return.

Loved the New York steam packet . Small venue but has a really good atmosphere. We visitied as a group of 5 on a Friday early evening . Set menu was three courses for approx £17 , extra 3 pounds sur charge for a main of steak. (Slightly cheaper if you are in Mon-thur) but still the menu seemed v reasonably priced for city centre. For starters our table ordered haggis balls & soup (coconut and sweet potato) clear plates all round with everyone really pleased with their entry course. We all went for steaks for mains with either the garlic butter or peppercorn sauce. Brilliant sirloins cooked to perfection with a side of skinny fries and salad. Probably the best steak I've eaten at a restaurant. Deserts were also superb. Toffee dime cake is a must .. asked my friend next to me for a score out of 10 for his meal at the end of the evening - Came in a solid 10 and I would have to agree. Will definately be back. Also really enjoyed the varied tunes throughout the meal .. Took me back . Would book in advance as was full at 6pm. Sean McDonald.

NYSP Is very small and hidden away, but after walking past a few times and being curious I eventually managed to go in one night and thankfully we managed to get a table. The service was great and very friendly, and the food was good too, reminds me of good old homemade comfort food that I love. Nothing too special but the whole experience was great, and they let us take our deserts away with us as we were in a rush, the caramel cake that I got was excellent.

This place is amazing. I was in Edinburgh for a hen weekend and this restaurant was recommended by a friend. The food was fantastic, we had the three course meal for £16.50. It is hard to find a restaurant with good quality food for a really good and reasonable price. The owners and staff couldn't be more accommodating. They had a challenge on their hands to please 17 of us, but they succeeded without a doubt. To top it off you can bring your own alcohol, only a small corkage fee, just watch the stairs as you leave. Thank you New York Steam Packet.

We've lived in Edinburgh for years and had never heard of this place, only coming across it recently on Tripadvisor. It sounded interesting, so we gave it a go.The first impression from the outside is that of a backstreet speakeasy in NYC, but don't let that put you off. On opening the door, you're confronted by a steep spiral staircase to get upstairs to the restaurant itself, which turns out to be pretty small, with maybe only 20 seats or so.There's a menu with three courses for £16.50, with each course having a choice of 4 or 5 items. Being a steak and burger man, I was well catered to, but there's other choices too. We both upgraded to the steak, which was fine, no issues at all. We didn't have a starter, so got a free can of coke instead. We had the signature Dime bar pudding to finish and enjoyed that very much.Being BYOB, we saved a bit too, which was nice. One thing to note is that this is the only American-type place I can think of with BYOB, the rest being Indian and the like, so for me it's ideal, meaning good solid American nosh with cheap beer thrown in. Paradise.Service was friendly too, so all in all, we're impressed and will definitely be back.

Hey this you get up staircase which wind round steep. Have many burger here and the steaks, Americans lick the beef I think. The chips is not chips but fries, quite skinny. All cooked there and then and just one pound each for "bringing the bottle that is your own" not much price at all and service is excellent I like!

Set menu which will have something to please everyone, and Kevin also ensured one of our party on a special diet was catered for. Byob which no one can complain about and friendly, comfortable service. We always enjoy a night in the NYSP!

I took the team here for our works night out and had a excellent time. The food and service was excellent. There was 13 if us and all the food came out at the same time and we all had three course including steaks which were cooked perfectly. It is a BYOB which means you can have a top class meal and get drunk and not spend a fortune. The staff and chef were very accommodating as you can imagine 13 guys out on a Christmas doo could be a challenge. Would highly recommend this place and we have already booked for next years Xmas meal.

I booked the restaurant for a party of 25 on Saturday night, the manager Kevin was absolute fantastic, communication about the booking via email was very prompt. I have never been to Edinburgh before so had no idea what to expect, the restaurant offered exactly what we wanted, a varied menu to suit everyone in our group including vegetarians and fussy eaters and Bring Your Own Booze was another selling point. They did not disappoint. Getting 25 girls ready and there on time was hard, we were 15-20 minutes late but the services was quick, it was no time at all between courses and all in all everyone was very happy. Kevin even gave me an umbrella on the way out as it had started to rain, the whole experience was fantastic, thank you :)

The sweet potato soup was lovely but the steak was as tough as old boots. My friend ordered a burger, the top half of the bun was smothered in something- mayo perhaps? Anyway it was so saturated it flopped about when she picked it up, she couldn't eat it. Have been here before and it was nice but don't think we'll be back.

Be prepared to hunt for the place because google maps is wrong; although a quick phone call to the restaurant and we had clear directions. Sorted. Myself and 5 friends were booked in for the 6pm:2hr sitting and although 3 of them were 15mins late, they chose quickly and we were able to order quite sharply (considering 15mins is the average time that people take to decise what to order it certainly didnt delay the waiting staff/chef). The starters came out and all was good, but there was a 25minute lag between starters and main and considering you only get a 2hr sitting we felt quite rushed by the time the main course arrived. The food was average-nothing to write home about but it lined the belly. Then we ordered dessert, some had the dime pie (i've had better elsewhere in the city) and 1 had the pecan pie. Firstly, those of us that had the dime pie were finished before the pecan pie was even served to my friend. Secondly, the pecan pie was vile. It didnt remotely resemble a pie and my friend described it as pecans with a bit of syrup poured over. When we complained to the waitress she said "sorry, i know". WHY WOULD YOU SERVE SOMETHING THAT YOU KNOW WILL ATTRACT COMPLAINTS?! The extras were removed from the bill to compensate for this so that's good service but i don't like to have to complain after a meal! The staff also only have a 15minute turn around between sittings which results in a rushed end to the night and customers being hastled out the door. The best thing about this place was the cheap price of the 3 course meal and the BYOB. I don't think i'd go back here, there are nicer places in Edinburgh.

My wife and ate there last Friday after watching a show at the festival. We had booked a table in advance because it's not the largest of restaurants and it was about half full so there was a good atmosphere. I had the haggis balls and my wife had the sweet potato and coconut soup then we both went for steaks and finished off sharing the toffee crunch dime bar cake. Service was very efficient and pleasant. The food was delicious and excellent value for money. It is a BYOB reataurant, so if you want alcohol you'll need to take your own (but no spirits, I think).

I came here with some work colleagues, hoping for a great meal and relaxed atmosphere.I was really apprehensive as the outside is pretty grim. The venue is very small, which is fine if you are a large group as you will basically have the place to yourself. You enter and go up a steep spiral staircase to the resturant. Under the staircase seems to be a storage area which seems to house loads of junk ladders, chairs etc. Its just off putting. The menu is pretty basic which is fine.I had potato skins, what can I say?Second course was steak which was fine. Dessert was dime cheesecake which was the best part of the night very nice. It's a byob restaurant which keeps the cost down.I have to say I was very disappointed, and wouldn't hurry back. I had hoped the staff would have beven engaging, this wasn't the case ,just no atmosphere. You are given a 2hr approx time slot. We were basically told our time was up when we hadn't finished our drinks. The night came to an abrupt end. :-(

Then the homemade burger which i felt frankly that i make better myself. The dime cake was actually fantastic but i do love sweet things. The service was fair, did the job and that was that.Been there once and personally dont think ill go back. Here on a Fri night to begin our night out. We were the first to arrive but tables set out for a couple of groups after us (which is what I think the restaurant is best for, in fact... great for!)The menu is simple but exactly what you want for a pre night out feed. We had our drinks with us (byob) and water out on the table for us too. Music on and really relaxed service - we weren't sure when the rest of our group were going to turn up as they had been delayed - no problems - take your time!Starter - haggis balls - good stuff - wee bit of salad and some mustardy mayo - one other had potato skins - no complaints all good.We had steaks for main and then one of our group turned up so they did starter for them and said they'd hang back and do mains for us all at same time.Steaks cooked exactly how we wanted - medium / rare in my case - peppercorn sauce. Steak was good stuff -again waiting staff and kitchen coped while two large groups turned up and we ordered our chocolate fudge cake - did what it said on the tin!All in all - great service - good food and super value - great for groups esp with byob!

Visited in 13th March 2014 with two friends. I recommended the restaurant, having been here twice before and thoroughly enjoying the experience. Unfortunately, this visit was well below par.The service we received was appalling. I arrived last and was taking my coat of and saying hi to my friends when the waitress asked if I was ready to order. She came back to us three times in two minute intervals until we gave in and picked randomly. The starters were excellent, however the waitress forgot to clear my plate. Thesis were a little greasier than usual which was a shame, but still tasty and we enjoyed them. However the waitress cleared my friends plates while I was still eating which added to the rushed feeling. We were brought the sweet menu and as we were half way through our puddings the waitress placed the bill on our table and advised us they would be closing in 15 minutes. I felt sorry for the couple still eating their mains on the next table! We said that we had hoped to order coffees after dessert, and the waitress looked put out, but did bring them over. The rush was revealed by the waitress as she came over to ask us to pay-her friends were in and she wanted to see them... She said she "felt she was being unprofessional"... She was! We all felt rushed-it was only just past 9pm which was ridiculous! Before this visit, I would have recommended the restaurant... It's a shame.

Went there for a meal with a group of friends and have to say it was amazing. It's tucked away up a side street so would normally have walked past it if I didn't know it was there. Service was prompt and the waitress wasn't constantly breathing down your neck. The food was cooked to perfection. I had the haggis burger and was pleasantly surprised. It is so quaint inside. No frills which was relaxing. Excellent value for money. Definitely go back.

We came to the restaurant as a group of 20 on a Monday night for our Christmas night out and enjoyed every moment. The food, the service and the atmosphere were all perfect. Everyone had a blast and enjoyed the food which is so difficult to do with so many people. We'll definitely be back - if you'll have us back!?!I even got a wee email from the manager (sent the same night) thanking us for coming! Have been here a few times, but the last time I was there, was for my girlfriends leaving do.....It's a relatively small place which I find adds to the atmosphere, the kitchen is small, but you can actually watch and talk to the chef as he's cooking if you so wish (i'd leave him to cook though. The prices are extremely reasonable considering what you actually get. I can eat quite a bit, and I am full after eating here, and the food is cooked perfectly! With this place being a BYOB (Bring your own booze), it keeps the cost right down for a night in Edinburgh, and with it's location, it's a perfect place to start the night.... or even to stop into half way through the night (just make sure you book in advance folks!!).Bear in mind, they only open especially for bookings, and on busy occasions, they will do 2 sittings, but there will be plenty of time for eating, drinking and all round enjoyment! We had a singing competition with another party that was in.... a great laugh! :-) Highly recommended, and I will definitely be coming back! Thanks!

Coming to the end of our exams a large group of people I go to uni with were all keen for a big lunch out to celebrate the holidays and this was the perfect place. It is a tiny wee room up a back alley off rose street but we all fitted in and how they can cater for massive parties in that tiny wee kitchen is truly unbelievable. The restaurant was BYOB (so suits us cheap students perfectly) and the set menu is filled mainly with burgers, chicken, steaks - nothing too fancy but good old fashion comfort food and perfectly cooked and served. The staff were excellent, as was the atmosphere - I really couldn't think of a better place for a bit of a rowdy get together!

We visited this restaurant as a table of 7. We really struggled to find it, it has a small sign right at the back of an alley. It isn't the most welcoming place and is very small up some tiny windy stairs. The decor is all a little old and shabby, but I guess that is the style. It reminded me of a studenty place. The restaurant and kitchen are basically all in one room. The food was very good value and we enjoyed our food. The vegetarian burger was a little tasteless. The desserts were amazing. The only bad point was the mayonnaise which came in a metal tub which had clearly been used before. They must give the same tub to customers so I couldn't be sure if anything else had been dipped into it.

Up a tattly alleyway just off Rose street. The food is more promising. Take you own alcohol. £1 corkage is cheap. Very noisy the night we went and up a circular staircase so not for disabled/wheelchair users and really a party night out. So think of booking for a party of up to 30 people as a rite of passage for stag/hen parties. The theme is the heyday of ocean cruising as memorabilia around the wall. Very limited menu. Steak is best. Anna was sick the next day but I was not.Very intimate and furnishing very delapidated. Staff very accommodating though. Tried reserving by phone but answering machine told us to book over the internet. Never got an acknowledgement although my email asked for one and when we turned up they had no record of our booking. Nevertheless the staff fitted us in. This is an unreliable operation in high season when booking is essential.Took own wine and paid £46 for 2 for a 3 course meal (including a tip). This operation needs to smarten up and the alleyway approaching it is like a tatty refuse tip.Sorry to be so brutal but am being honest. If you tour Edinburgh go elsewhere for your steak.Should have said 2 evening sittings and we went to the later 8.15pm one.Clearly a heavy drinking establishment with a pretext of food.Regards.Chris & Anna.

I am a nanny of two wee ones that live around the corner from Bruno's. We visited often when the children were off school during term breaks. I am an American immigrate to Scotland, and often reminesce about real American style breakfasts. The children wanted to experience the french toasts, sausages, pancakes and milk shakes that I grew up with at their age. We LOVED visiting Bruno's!!! The staff were always super friendly and chatty with us. The lady manager was sweet and made the children feel special. The food was delicious! We enjoyed the 50's style decor very much, with the vintage toys and red vinyl carseat booths. The kids enjoyed watching The Wizard of Oz on the big screen telly! What a shame it has closed down We are all very sad to see you go. Good luck in whatever future business you may aspire to. We hope you come back and open up something equally as cool as Bruno's in our neighbourhood again! ❤❤❤
