Beautiful location, a landlord with character, friendly, welcoming and just brilliant. Dog friendly, great beer, nice walks around, good cycling - need I say more???

Had lunch with friends here. Very nice setting but ruined by obnoxious landlord! He thought it was hilarious when delivering the tart to my female friend and me to say 'Who's the tart?' And when we ignored it: 'See what I did there?' We were the only customers. Had to order everything on an app even though he was standing within earshot. No lime and soda (surely every pub in the realm has that??). Sadly, I wouldn't go back simply because of him.

We spent about six weeks in the UK this summer and this stood out as the friendliest pub we visited. Les and Emma were great to talk to and gave us lots of local information and tips. We ate at the pub twice and the food was great, and included some dishes which aren't your usual standard pub fare. The ribs and the Mediterranean tart in particular were very good. We didn't mind using the app to order at all. Also we really enjoyed the very cold Camden ale, which was delicious especially on a hot day. The veranda at the back of the pub overlooking the garden and hillside is a wonderful spot. Thank you so much, Les and Emma.

A great night, excellent food and a very entertaining host. The beer was fantastic too! The App works brilliantly (you'll see when you get there), you can keep chatting, order from the table and food and drinks arrive without every having to queue at the bar. Definitely worth the trip up a very narrow single track road

Have been here a few times over the years and it really is a hidden gem. It’s in a quiet valley surrounded by woods and fields. Everything about it screams proper country pub with character.Everything COVID safe so you can do the check in and order food via an app on their WiFi.

Great pub in a beautiful location, excellent new system for ordering your drinks and food to your table, can be a bit tricky with connectivity but the hosts were happy to provide WiFi details when the signal was poor. Very simple to order and pay once your online. Best ordering system we’ve used since the reopening of pubs! The landlord and his team are very hot on the Covid requirements which isn’t an issue, would much prefer it that way than them cutting corners and potentially being fined. We were made to feel very welcome, enjoyed a few drinks and snacks in the garden whilst appreciating what a beautiful valley it is. We will definitely be returning soon for food as it all looked amazing whilst going past us, just wish we hadn’t planned tea before we popped out for a drink! See you again soon.

We turned up on mountain bikes today as part of our ride, 5 of us all hungry and wanting drinks too, upon arrival we were shouted at to sign in on an nhs app and register where we were for track and trace, which is fair enough. But when a few in our group couldn’t get signal or get onto their wifi, the bloke who I assume runs the place started getting a lot of attitude and making snippy comments towards us. We packed up and left- never been spoken to like that before or since. Avoid if you want decent service

We phoned the New Inn to be sure that we would get food if we arrived before 3pm and that was confirmed. We asked because we planned to walk the 3 miles from Wotton and to arrive in time for a late lunch. This we did, arriving just after 2.30. We were not allowed to sit in the sunshine because all of the tables were reserved (we realised later that they were reserved for the evening service!), so we were seated on the shaded veranda. There was a problem signing in on the NHS app. The landlord is keen to do everything via mobile, but the signal in the valley is weak and there is no guest Wi-Fi. Once we did manage to access the menu, we were told brusquely that we could only order drinks, there was no more food because the kitchen had been busy and needed to prepare for the evening service. We were the only group asking for food, although others were turned away as we waited for attention. Not even a sandwich. So we walked back to Wotton. We won't be gong back to The New Inn until there's a change of management, I'm afraid. Such a shame, as it's in an idyllic spot.

Such a beautiful spot for a bit of lunch, just shame about the rude landlord. On arrival he was quite abrupt with us about how he runs the place with the new Covid restrictions (understandably, but we aren't rule breakers) to then be served by him later without his mask on. - Come on man, as you said, the rules are there for a reason...!!!!!The food was good, but we definitely won't be returning. I'm all for supporting our local businesses at the moment but I guess this guy doesn't need our support so we'll take it elsewhere. FYI - Your sense of humour is not funny, it is just plain rude!!!

The reviews of the New Inn make the landlord sound like Basil Fawlty. They made me want to visit the pub even more just to see if he fitted the description. Yes, he is a little officious when you arrive enforcing Covid rules, but deep down he is a lovely guy who cares about his pub and chats happily to all the customers. The New Inn is right off the beaten track - it is so hard to find that you will probably need to ask directions from locals to find it. Tip to the landlord: signpost it clearly from North Nibley. It is so worth the journey: if there is a prettier pub garden in the whole of England, I have not been there . It is a tucked away in a delightful little valley and overlooked by its own vineyard where they are due to start making wine. The food is fantastic: unpretentious pub grub with chips which are even crispier than Heston's triple cooked variety. I cannot recommend the New Inn enough: it is a classic country pub and well worth a visit. The landlord's eccentricities just make it even more fun. Ignore the Tripadvisor pedants and check it out.

During a short break in the Cotswold we visited The New Inn was a short walk from where we were staying, Despite the impact the pandemic has had on pubs we received a warm welcome and enjoyed a beer in the garden. Social distancing was taken seriously. We did not dine, as we had eaten earlier in the day, but such was the friendly atmosphere and a wonderful beer garden and a safe environment, we made a return visit. Hopefully, The New Inn survives the pandemic as there are not many traditional pubs left were you can relax in such wonderful surroundings.

Hilarious reading the other reviews of this place. Most sum it up perfectly so don't need to add much. Owner is laughably rude, so honestly don't even attempt to find this place if you want to feel welcome somewhere. Despite what is advertised on the website, this is not kid friendly in any way and does not have swings. Such a shame as location is lovely. I assume he really doesn't need or want the business as otherwise this place would have gone under years ago. Hopefully at some point he will realise that if he hates people, this really isn't job for him. So sad as it could be lovely.

We havent been here for a few years. So we noticed on facebook a Curry and Karaoke night between 6 and 7 curry served until it gone .We arrive at 6. Got our drinks. Staff okay but very matter of fact and no smiles or conversation. Sat outside to who I guess was the landlord and a handful of I guess locals . They set up karaoke machine and kids having fun. Landlord wandering around with a apron on. But no signs of curry. We drank our ciders. Which were very nice. But sadly that was all that was. No welcome from landlord. Infact he didnt even look our way. No curry as advertised between 6 and 7. And not even a Thanks call again from staff as we took glasses back and left.I can remember this pub many years ago. Full of people. Bikers used to travel to get to it as its quite isolated. A beer garden full most of the day. Sadly a Saturday summers evening it had 10 people at a push. No suprise if the welcome is so chilly. No hurry to go back for another few years..Maybe landlord will be different then. Along with atmosphere.

The food used to be great here, good enough for us to forgive the grumpy chef-owner his rudeness, but today I had the worst roast I've ever experienced; rock- hard roast potatoes, some burnt, a piece of beef that was almost more fat than meat and gravy which quickly congealed almost solid - the kids immediate response was ' this is just like school dinners' We all felt a bit sick afterwards. The barman was sweet and apologetic, but the pub was almost empty on Sunday lunchtime when everywhere else locally was booked. Something seems to have gone wrong, which is sad, and I hope it can be sorted out soon as this is a wonderful much-loved spot.

Had been stopping in for the odd pint while out riding the green lanes on my bike. Usually very quiet in the lounge which suited me. Never get a welcome or recognition from the owner when you are there. Decided to pop in on Friday evening on the way home after work. 7.30pm and I was the only person in the lounge. Owner knew I was waiting as had seen me when I came in. After waiting to be served for 10 minutes I picked up a catering catalogue off one of the tables to read. Another customer then came in. Eventually he came in to serve. First thing he said was put that book down that's my personal property. Well this certainly raised my hackles.I was already at the point of walking out. I said if its personal property why are you leaving it out on a pub table. Secondly it was just a catalogue not a book. I have never been spoken to so rudely by a publican before. I told him to take his book and shove it where the sun dosen't shine. Will never set foot on the premesis again while he is the landlord. Normally I don't leave negative reviews as I am in the trade myself, and no this pub is not my competition. I give the place 2 because of its location and quirkiness.

I used to consider this place as a special place to go with my husband for a special meal. The food was always good and the chef fun and friendly. I regarded the place so highly, that I was looking looking forward to bringing my dear Uncle and Aunt, who were on a rare visit from Ireland, to the place. The chef was extremely arrogant and rude to my Aunt, who was trying to find a dairy free sauce to go on her chicken. I felt very embarrassed by his rude attitude towards her. The food was okay, nothing startling. The barman kept piling wood on the fire and we were far too warm. We did mention it but he persisted in adding more wood. We asked him what time they closed and he said 11.30pm or there abouts and that suited us as the taxi was booked for 11.30pm and it would need to do two trips. We relaxed as much as we could and tried to make the most of the evening. It needed several drinks! It was dull, as there were no other diners there! *alarm bells* About 11pm the barman, who kept popping outside for cigarettes, informed us that the bar would close at 11.15pm! We called the taxi to rearrange the time but due to road closures, as there had been a road traffic accident in the area, he arrived at 11.30pm. The barman assured us we would be welcome to wait inside. After a discussion it was decided that myself and my husband along with our two boys would go first. Feeling confident, we left my Uncle and Aunt, who are not getting any younger, to wait for the taxi to return. We found out later that Les, the owner and chef declared the situation 'ridiculous ' and ordered 'everybody' out. Well that was my Uncle, Aunt and the barman! They went outside into the COLD and once the barman reached his car at the end of the car park, he insultingly plunged them into total darkness! So rude! They could not even see the path and the barman was so ashamed of his boss's behaviour, he offered my uncle, who only had a short sleeved shirt on, a jumper and apologised profusely! I'm disgusted! Much money went over that bar. Take my advice and stay away! Absolutely disgraceful! Led! You ought to be ashamed of yourself. We won't be back!

Then we sat at the bar and had drinks until our table was ready, the pub was freezing there was no heating on. When we wanted dessert, we politely asked for the dessert menu as we couldn't see any around, to then only be told the list of puddings and Expected to remember them all which we did not so asked for them again, we still couldn't remember the last couple so someone different went up and asked for them. To which the landlord replied "I am not saying them again" we were then spoken to like children and also treated like them. The location is beautiful, there's no doubt about it, so it's such a shame that the pub itself offers so little. I have been here a couple of times and neither experiences have been good. The first was when it was the North Nibley festival, and my friend and I went to the bar to order food but were told by the manager that because he wanted to head off early to the festival, they'd only do something simple and that we had the same meal to help enable him to do this. He made it quite obvious that we were causing a great inconvenience. Great customer service skills! That was a year or two ago, but more recently when arriving he was put out when ordering food because we hadn't reserved. This is a country pub after all, not a high end restaurant so the assumption that you can just turn up and order is not something that would be out of the ordinary I would say. So, in light of this I, and others I have known to have gone here and had similar experiences, will head to other decent pubs where you get to order food and feel welcomed as well!!

There was a nice hub bub in the gardens which look on to a wooded valley; there was a vintage tractor club meet underway and still plenty of space to park. the classic vehicles were a nice distraction. It's set in a picturesque end of a country lane. We hadn't pre booked but decided on the spur of the moment to eat out on the verandah and chef did cater for us even though they had a group arriving soon - it isn't a huge pub and so it probably is courteous to book ahead where possible, also so that they can plan for waiting staff. Our waitress was very busy but pleasant. We found the outside much more inviting than inside and the toilets are long overdue an upgrade with quite a damp problem on exterior walls and ceiling in parts and in need of some ventilation. The sink was spotlessly clean though. That said the pub has a lot of potential due to its tranquil location, the food was fine and the chef checked on us which was nice. I tried the home made sausage roll with a secret ingredient with lovely home made onion gravy and a good selection of fresh vegetables. The sausage roll was like a generous slice of meat loaf nicely browned on top. The ham egg and chips was a decent sized portion and the treacle walnut and date desert with custard absolutely fine. We would probably call by again if out on a bike ride near Wotton under edge for a lunch in the garden.

We went here on a recommendation and we weren't disappointed. Although we were limited to ordering from the lunch menu as they were expecting a pre booked group of 15, we were quickly served a piping hot, freshly cooked meal. Home cooked proper ham, yum yum, a definite improvement on a pub I have previously reviewed. Local free range eggs ( ooh those golden yolks...) and piles of chips. Hubby went for scampi and was very impressed that the salad was similar to the one he concocts at home. And as for desserts... Definitely their strength! Served in a mini kilner type jar, the rhubarb and ginger panacotta was delish, and the summer fruit cheese cake delectable. And home made! Can I just say that again HOME MADE! None of this packaged frozen, mass produced stuff, this was the real deal! Heavenly! Accompanied by a pint of their local brew and a friendly service, this is a pub we will be returning to often. It may be at the end of a narrow country lane and not that easy to find, but it's probably worth investing in a sat at just so as you can.

Many months ago I had a conversation with the landlord about how I've given up ordering tuna in restaurants as it's always overcooked. He doesn't have tuna on his menu as he said it must be cooked from fresh & there's not enough demand but he promised that one day he would get one in especially for me & cook it exactly how I wanted it. Last night he did just that & it was perfect. I didn't specify any accompaniments but he served it with the zingiest, freshest tomato salad & the tastiest rice ever. It was simply amazing. We both had his homemade cheesecake (because no one makes cheesecake like he does) and then he went off-menu for us again and despite having finished in the kitchen for the night made us each a fantastic liqueur coffee. I've never been disappointed with food I've eaten here and highly recommend it. He cooks a perfect steak too. And pulled pork. And bread and butter pudding (although this is not always on the menu). And everything really!

The local Mummers group were performing at 2100, so 4 of us booked a table at 1930 and ate before the entertainment. We had starters, mains and puds from across the menu, all cooked by mien host and owner, Les Smitherman. Excellent food all round, in an unrushed atmosphere, just what we wanted. Where else can you choose from two different black puddings?? Good range of wines at prices to suit all.

A large group of us who went to school in Dursley tend to meet up here for our reunions as it is based at an easy location for most of us to get to. It is a good, old fashioned pub, with a roaring fire, and the pub dog roaming around. Drinks are pretty well priced and there is a good selection of them on tap.Beware however - they do not accept card!

Went with friends - who had booked for Sunday Lunch. Some previous reviews made me a little anxious. However, we needn't have worried, The rib of beef was really good. Proper roast beef - not a hint of carvery style cooking. Cooked to perfection served with excellent meat juice gravy and yummy Yorkshire puddings. The veg and potatoes were in bowls on the table - ample but delicious so more were requested and quickly supplied. The fact that it was way better than the average carvery quality (which is what I was expecting) was reflected in the price but our party felt it was well worth it (and no charge for the extra veg and potatoes!!) Great meal, good service and a surprising location made for a lovely meal out with friends.

We have been to this pub on and off over many years, from the days when Ruby owned it, and then the French Chef and his English wife ( cant for the life of me remember their names, I'm sure Jackie was one of the names though ), which in our opinion was when the pub was at its best. When it was taken over we called in as we normally did for a mid week evening meal, to be told we had to book. Although the place was empty. However after the chastising for not pre booking we were accommodated and provided with food. Fortunately, I knew the lady behind the bar and she said it was how the new owners operated. Next time we went, we phoned and booked and was then told that there was no need to?? We had been there on and off several times and the food and service was hit and miss but the location also appealed and it was always a local busy pub so we enjoyed most of our times there, that is until yesterday Sunday 21st June 2015.We had both been busy all day and thought we would eat out, so off we drove some 8 miles and if you've been to this pub the roads leading to it are not car friendly. We parked up and the first thing I noticed was the abandoned car and what looks to be an abandoned camper van. Walking towards the pub we could hear some loud music, not to our liking but hey ho.You walk past all the signs advertising an array of food etc and then we went into the lounge, past the noisy bar and waited for a good 5 minutes to be seen. During which time we looked at all the menu signs stating these menus were also available on a Sunday. The lounge was completely empty. I think the bar seemed busy and that's where the music was coming from, possibly from someones personal iphone and via an amp. No signs displayed inside or outside stating there was No food service. Our surprise was this was fathers day and the place was empty, but we just assumed it was not that busy, I think we know why now!!When we were eventually acknowledged by the lady behind the bar, we inquired for a menu and was told " were not doing food today".So, not for the first time have we been out there and been told they are not serving food. Its just been well and truly wiped off our list of pubs to ever attempt to go to.It really is no longer worth the drive out there, and if they are going to change their minds when they feel like it about serving food etc, I suggest they take down all the signs which makes patrons feel as though there is a food service on, and a vast selection of it as well!!The good news is, we drove off to the Patch and Slimbridge and was made welcome and although we had not booked and they were very busy as it was fathers day bookings etc, they accommodated us without any fuss.If the New Inn survives on their locals in the winter where you get this kind of services in the summer then good luck to them, but personally, they are not worth the drive out there and their customer services is nil. Find another pub to visit and save the journey.

The pub is in a wonderful location, and very off the beaten track, but worth the journey as very beautiful once there. Menu looks ok and I ordered a rib eye steak. The steak looked nicely cooked but on cutting it I found it to be very tough. I persevered as it could have just been one end of it that was tough but had to give in half way through. I ate the rest of my meal, an average salad, no dressing, and frozen chips! I don't like to make a fuss but as I had left half my steak I explained very discretely that the steak was tough. I was expecting an apology but instead got told off for not telling them sooner! I accept that it may have been an odd bad piece of steak, and having eaten half they couldn't rectify it BUT I didn't go there to quality test their food. I went for a nice meal. The meal was average and the owners response was rude. I paid the half price he offered me but won't ever go there again. Had someone bothered to ask me how was my meal earlier, I would've told them earlier. Poor poor customer service. And really, is it that hard to peel some spuds and make real chips, offer condiments and maybe dress the salad?

Nice pub with average food BUT it is reasonably priced. When I visited with friends there was very little atmosphere and a very poor welcome from the lady behind the bar. We had a great Sunday lunch here with family. The location is well off the beaten track and feels like you are alone in the countryside. No road noise at all.For people struggling to find it, be warned that the postcode when put into a sat nav does not take you to the door! Also, there is another "New Inn' less than a mile away - we nearly ended up at the wrong one.The food was solid portions of solid pub fare - by no means a gastropub, but still worthwhile. The beer and ciders were excellent - probably worth a visit just to work through their selection.Overall an excellent meal.

For the scenery, the setting and the garden this is one of the best pubs in the country. The selection of ciders is also really excellent. However, the service is consistently unfriendly and has been for years! No one who works there knows the least thing about hospitality, it's like a private club for a few locals and anyone else who shows up is there strictly for a business transaction. Such a shame! Beautiful place, lousy atmosphere.

After we discovered this gem of a pub on a random walk after moving to the area we've been back frequently and have enjoyed many cider and food fuelled nights. We've recently been there for the awe inspiring "Cider Fest" (think this is our fourth or fifth year) and managed to try every one over the course of the weekend (some task given there were 28 stills on offer with several fizzies too) as well as listening to some amazing local bands and dressing up in Superhero fancy dress (the fab locals made a real effort)!Les is by far one of the best landlords I've ever met because it's his home and he takes offering great food and fine beers and ciders seriously. He frequently has us in stiches with his quick witty comebacks and dry sense of humour, and we look forward to forgetting the weeks stresses there.Having read some of the other "feedback" on here - yes it is off the beaten track but if you want a pub that's easy to find and crammed perhaps you should go to a Weatherspoon and leave the real Gloucestershire cider drinking to the professionals ;-)Maybe after a few visits you might get a chance to visit the snug and we'll help you translate what the natives are saying because... let's face it... we'll probably be there having a pint of "West Country Gold"... Cider I up landlord!

My husband and I decided to try the New Inn for a change. The road which we were supposed to follow, according to the sat nav was closed. We followed the alternate route and found ourselves travelling along pot-holed lanes/roads which were only just wider than the car.Eventually the sat nav announced we had arrived at our destination. Not a building was in sight, so we set off along a road, got to a cul- de-sac, turned around, followed a second road, just as unsuccessfully. We did find the New Inn eventually but I am sad to say the food really didn't make our trouble worth the visit. The evening menu appears to be much better than the lunch menu, which is very limited and quite boring.Sufficient to say we will not be returning to this eatery even though we now know the way!

The New Inn nestles into the rolling hills of Waterley Bottom, an oddly named but achingly beautiful area of English countryside. It's an adventure just getting to the New Inn especially for Americans like myself who are not used to small country lanes, but it's a drive I've made many times and one of my favorite drives as the idyllic country scenery on the way in is only topped by the excellent food awaiting. For the past two years my wife and I have visited this part of England, most recently we were here May 22nd - June 3rd, staying at the Homestead Apartment in Stinchcombe. We ate at the New Inn as often as we could but not enough as I wished. I've never had a bad meal and always had my expectations surpassed. Les, the owner and chef, is self-taught. He started cooking after being dissatisfied with the chefs he hired. Some people have the gift and Les is one such person. It doesn't hurt the ingredients used are from the area and very fresh. This means that they can run out of a dish so get here early and a booking is recommended. I can't stress this enough - the quality of the food here is far beyond the asking price.Besides excellent food the New Inn also offers some great choices in ciders, perry, and real ales. I was even surprised to find their coffee is quite good, even for my coffee snob sensibilities. The owner is quite the character, in a good way. Lots of personality and seems like he knows a little bit about everything. It seems to me he loves what he does and that shows in the food. The rest of the staff are very friendly. The clientele are mostly from the area (with some cotwold walkers as well) and we had a great time talking with them. We were very sad when the time came for us to head back home. This place is a true gem both from a setting and a gastro standpoint and I can't recommend it enough.

I accidentally stumbled on this pub whilst I was lost! That was 2 years ago and I've been visiting the establishment since. The landlord is welcoming and full of character, and is a very good chef.I would recommend booking a table if you are eating in the evening or Sunday lunch and don't plan to eat on a Monday as there is no food....I guess everyone deserves a day off! The pub serves good ales, but specialises in ciders. Worth a visit over the August bank holiday when there is a cider festival with over 30 different ciders, live bands and good food....I believe there may be a small spring festival this year too! Strongly recommend making the effort to find this little hidden Gem, the garden is a perfect spot to enjoy a summers day, and the log burner is welcoming in the winter.Dogs and Children welcome inside and out (well behaved ones of course! )
