Very authentic fish and chips experience! The place is a hole in wall that looks like it's been there since at least the 70s. Fish tastes great. Crispy batter with a ton of grease. Chips are really soggy, and you get a mountain of them shoved into a tiny paper bag. For my taste not enough vinegar on the chips. They should be absolutely drenched in vinegar. I think my arteries are clogged after this one. 4/5 would recommend. Good job lads!

This is the best chip shop i’ve ever been to. The portions are fabulous and it is so so cheap and you definitely get your money worth.

Excellent fish and chips, great value and served hot and fresh. Very busy shop, customers were queuing out the door but service was quick and organised. Highly recommended. Perfectly cooked crisp, thick cut chips and a good sized piece of cod well cooked in a nice crunchy batter, well drained and not greasy. Good sized portions and great value for money - £9.50 (cash only) for cod, chips and mushy peas. Much better than some supposed ‘award winning’ chip shops I have visited.

I see someone in another review say that the customer service was poor. In my opinion that's a reflection on the way they treat staff, I've been coming here since I was a child and they're so pleasent. Name another place where the staff rush out to hold the door open for you? Amazingly well priced, friendly staff, good portion sizes and the list goes on. I always have a beef burger and spam fritter with chips and curry sauce. There is a reason they were voted best chipshop in Reading. The row of shops where they're located also have some of the longest running businesses in the Whitley area, all sorts of pets next door and top cut 2 doors down. Not a single local person would have a bad thing to say about those businesses. 5 star everything from this place!

People of reading need 2 travel more this chippy is the worst iv experienced ! Absolutely shocking if u don't want nothing to eat 4 a week here's ur place to go ??? Grease ? Calories 4 the week here ! Blimey get a grip if uv left a good review! I travel all over the country this is my new low avoid n less ur starving n everything else is shut !!!

The fish and chips are delicious, and I 100% recommend! The only thing that is a bit annoying is that it's cash only, but that doesn't put me off going there.

Flood and service was 10/10 the only one issue i had was they dont accept card so i had to leave and go to a cash machine then go back. But apart from that, highly recommend just make sure to take cash. £2.60 for regular chips and under £2 for a battered sausage

Hands down this is the best chippy in Reading! The fish is amazing and I can honestly the food quality is always perfect. They have places to park out the front which makes it so much easier.

I've tried to find a Fish & Chip shop that tops this one? I simply can not. This establishment has been around for many years & ive always known it as "Buckland Road Chippy". I can remember coming here when I was very young with my grandparents & it tastes as good then as it does now. Fish is always cooked to order, chips are chunky & traditional. Curry sauce is a must. Simply the best. (Please note: cash only services)

I came and found fish and chips with much more being made fresh. The people at the counter were super friendly! A nice place to wait and fresh fish served quickly. I highly recommend to come here again. Note: peanut oil is used.

Can't operate this long in Rg2 without being on top. Just had golden chips no bad ones at all with Steak Kidney pie £5...Proper cold weather thing. Queueing out the door at 5.20pm says a lot.

Best Chip shop in Reading, hands down!

I visited New City Fish Bar for the first time this evening and I want to write about my experience while it is still fresh. The establishment is a standard hole-in-the-wall chippie so there are no surprises there. The menu consists of fish items, burgers, roasted chicken and assorted items such as "Spam loaf", whatever that may be. Prices are on the inexpensive side...two pieces of cod plus a standard portion of chips came to just a little over £10. The fish was tasty and I happened to get freshly cooked cod, which required a short wait - as it should. The fries however were quite tragic. Think about a lightly blanched potato cut into pieces then quickly fried. They were not cooked all the way through, they were not crispy and quite frankly they were well below the standard of chips made just about everywhere, including oven chips. They were tough in the middle and not golden browned - very disappointing. Overall I enjoyed my visit and I want to believe the chips were an aberration. Upon my next visit I will update this review.

Cannot give them a high enough rating. Have been visiting with family for most of my life and would always prefer to come here and than any other fish and chip shop. The owner and staff are really lovely and the food is brilliant quality at a fantastic price.

After many poor & overpriced experiences at Deep Blue, we were pushed to go further a field seeking better fish&chips. Mission successful as City Fish Bar is well priced & more importantly the service is great. Not at any point was I made to feel inadequate like at Deep Blue or did they shout at my other half for not ordering online. Wish we found them sooner.

Honestly, really good fish and chips. When the fish has gone straight from fryer to the chips, it is a little oily but if you get one that has sat for a bit...perfection.

Been here several times now on & off over the last few years and have never been disappointed , always a warm greeting from a nice lady , possibly the owner , consitant good quality & not expensive , long may you survive , keep up the good work .
