Visited this pub 3 years ago and loved the lunch. Hot sandwich was very soggy this time. The serving lady was lovely. The Landlord not so much.

The man who I assume is the landlord is terrible. He is rude, miserable and speaks to the staff (quite openly) terribly. Why any of them put up with it I will never know. I even saw him speaking poorly to the customers. Just an uncomfortable and unpleasant experience. Shame as this pub has so much potential with this location. I didn't eat here so can't comment on the food, only had a drink.

We spent the night here on 29th September, for the steam fair that was held nearby. It's an area that has SO much to see and do, and the Navigation is the perfect base. The food is excellent, and we found the service to be great, and very friendly. We stayed the night, and our room was nice and warm, with a good sized bath and LOADS of hot water. True, our room would benefit from a little refurbishment, but the bed was clean and comfortable, and there was no noise to keep us awake. There is free and easy parking, but you DO need to register your car number at the bar. This applies even if you're just having a drink. Or you could choose to Pay & Display, but it only takes a moment to register your number. If you DO stay over, treat yourself to a Navigation breakfast, which was probably the best brekkie we've ever had. Finally... Some people have left derisory comments about the landlord. He's a great guy, who truly wants you to enjoy your time in his venue. He's a real character, and we enjoyed chatting with him, although he'll prob HATE us for saying so! Stay over, or just pop in for a meal or a drink. You won't regret it!

I see in this extremely below average pub it says vegetarian friendly, I asked for a veggie option, after getting a blank expression off the landlady (I was wondering weather I should have bought a dictionary with me) she said I should have pre arranged it 😂 I have had better service in Macdonalds in Derby at gone midnight dealing with some halfwitted teenager who clearly doesn't like his job.

Great food and very friendly staff but that miserable landlord has to go. He’s spoiling the place and from reading others reviews , I’m not the only one that’s noticed. He never smiles, rude to customers and has a face like a bulldog chewing a wasp. Totally spoils a great little place.

The 3/5 rating is due entirely to the lovely young ladies who served us, one from the bar and the other waiting at tables. We felt sorry for the 2 polite, pleasant members of staff who were extremely busy and were doing their best to serve waiting customers. Despite their efforts they were each at the receiving end of admonishments from a man who I assumed was the landlord, we thought it was bad form for him to be telling the young ladies off in full hearing of waiting customers. He was grumbling to the barmaid that he had lost £300 last week due to customers walking out because of a long wait and he also told off the waitress for not warning customers about a 20 minute wait. It was very unpleasant for us to have to listen to his whining and general bad attitude. We both ordered haddock, chips and mushy peas (small portion), what we got was haddock in ciabatta bread, smothered in tartare sauce, chips, mushy peas, coleslaw and salad. I hate coleslaw and prefer my tartare sauce in a container, not smeared on my food. On seeing the ciabatta bread I thought the wrong meal had been served to us initially, I have never had fish served up in bread like that. We won’t be visiting again, hope the young ladies find somewhere more pleasant to work.

On a very wet visit to the basin we decided to call in the Navigation to shelter from the rain and dry out a bit. The pub wasn’t that busy but everyone seemed friendly, we ordered lunch and drinks. The lovely waitress came to our table with the condiments, table mats and cutlery. The food arrived shortly after, freshly cooked and a good portion size, and it was quite delicious. The pubs taste in music was excellent , and worth a mention. The landlady was friendly too We had a great time and will return.

We went in for Sunday lunch and decided to have the carvery. They'd only just opened so there were plenty of tables available and we were told to choose any available table before ordering. We ordered the carverys and beers and then took our tokens through to where the carvery was being served. A pleasant young man expertly carved the meat and we helped ourselves to the veg. We asked where we'd find cutlery, and we were told that it would be brought to our table. No cutlery was at our table when we returned with our plate of hot food, so I went in search of some. I found some near the coffee machine and we started eating our meal. At least 5 minutes later, a waitress brought us some cutlery, and she looked surprised that we'd started eating. She asked us to lift our plates off the table so she could put some place mats under them. In the process, she managed to knock my wife's half pint of bitter all over the table and my leg. Nice. She did apologise though, and replaced the spilled drink without question. Two ladies had come in after us and ordered the same carvery. They too sat down with their plates of hot food and no sign of cutlery. When the waitress was asked for some, she again asked them to lift their plates so she could put place mats down. My concern with this is that having people lift their plates while the waitress tries to slide place mats in between multiple drinks, seems like a needlessly risky process. And for what? The tables don't look like they need protecting, and we certainly weren't asking for them. And if they ARE necessary, why not place them on the table, WITH cutlery, immediately after the food has been ordered? In the end, it was a reasonably pleasant meal, marred by having to find our own cutlery, some clumsy table serving and an unnecessary requirement for place mats.

The evening meal with real ale and wine for my wife was refreshing. Our room was clean and comfortable with everything we needed. Check that your booking includes the full English breakfast because that is worth attempting - a real challenge if you think you can eat it all! A girl came out to take our order halfway through taking it a heavyset girl came marching out the pub very rudely with a raised voice and abruptly telling us we have to go into the pub and sign in which is no problem, considering the pandemic etc. She later brought our drinks with a real problem with us still so rude! Surprising to be treated in such a way after the hard time the pub trade has suffered will definitely not be returning to this place PMD

After a disasterous dinner the previous night at the Dragon in Willington we stopped off to walk around the wonderful canal basin at Bugsworth. Being lunch time we stopped for something to eat. Having moored in the basin on occasions when we lived on the canald and being close to noon we diceided to take lunch at the Navugation Inn.Due to the reladxation of the Covid restrictions we were able to eat outside for the first time for many weeks. Plenty of tables about half of which were under a gazebo cover where we chose to sit as wer were unsur if rain was coming. The menu is standard pub grub and we both chose Cumberland sausage and mash. There was about 45 mins wait for food which we had been warned about. Dishes wre coming out as if there was only one person in the kitchen but we were happy to wait. In fact I went for a walk around the basin during theis period. The sausages (3) were excellent. Accompanying veg was mash and mushy peas. Mushy peas always come out of a tim except in the north so no surprise there. The mash was a bit bland and I encountered crusty bits which made me think it had been kept warm in an oven. It could have done with some seasoning and perhaps a little butter. The onion gravy lacked onions! and personally I would have liked more. However I enjoyed it more than list night's burger and at half the price it was considerably more acceptable

The food was desperately basic and ridiculously overpriced for what it was - we could have done a far better job ourselves at home. Management obviously don’t care about the impression they give off or the quality of service and I agree with the other reviews - it’s such a shame as the place has so much potential in that location in the right hands. We have been before, the last time we had to send a meal back and to be perfectly honest we should have done that today. Five eating - the two Sunday Roasts were passable but swimming in overly salty gravy, the fish and chips had been cooked in old fat and the sandwich another in our party ordered came 20 minutes after everyone else's meal. A very basic meal somewhat overpriced, I shall not return in a hurry. The only positive for us is that we can take our two dogs with us.

When we arrived disappointed to find so many dogs around , the owners were all chatting and didn't move out of the way to let us get passed to enter the pub very rude . It is in a lovely position In the Peak District with a canal just outside . We had booked for 2 o'clock lunch had to ask for it at 2.40 . I suggest if you want to visit try mid week , it is a dog lovers pub I believe they give the dogs a free meal if they buy their lunch there . I prefer not to be surrounded by so many dogs not my type of restaurant

Popped in for a beer after walking from Furness Vale. Nice rustic pub worn around the edges. Tried a Wobbley Bob which was very nice but at a whopping £4.45 a pint! OK it was 6% but it would only cost me max £3.20 where I live in Kinver, South Staffs. More expensive than many London pubs. Nevertheless we only had one. Would not be able to afford to make this pub my local if I lived nearby. That's sad.

Slightly worried about reviews on this venue before arriving, but were met by a cheerful enough host and shown to our room. Seems strange that they use the landing outside the room for storing kegs.

Unfriendly bar staff, very overpriced or might have been overcharged? Paid £63 for 2x fish&chips;, 1x navigation chicken, 2x kids meals, 2x squash, 3 pints..REALLY? I dont mind paying this for nice quality meals but these were extremely basic. The guy at the bar apologised for being..lets say unfriendly due to his tiredness but at the end of the day I am a customer as well paying for their service. Normally, I wou ld leave this place asap, but after 4.5 hours driving with two small kids we needed to have dinner. I am really disappointed and would never come back and/or recommend it.

This is almost a “local” to where we now live. We took a walk along the old tramway and canal and called in here for a drink on our return journey. We were “welcomed” by the most miserable landlord ever (Roger is his name, apparently). He managed to give us both the impression that anything we asked for - 2 drinks and 2 packets of crisps - was just too much trouble. He should be videoed for customer service courses - “How NOT to do it”...

I was really anxious about coming here when I saw the reviews but my mum wanted to come and we were going for a nice walk on a sunny Sunday so decided to just go for it. I was very pleasantly surprised the food was great and big portions, the home made chips were especially great. Two of us had fish and chips and one had a cheese and onion pie. The cheese and onion pie was the biggest thing I have ever seen, my mum declared it the best one shes ever had! My fish was lovely with what I assume was home made tartar sauce. The bar maid was polite and did her best but on such a busy day could have done with some help as she was very busy and there was a queue at the bar. 2 drinks each(4 beer/cider) and 3 main courses came to about £50 so reasonable prices too. There was maybe a half an hour wait but it was busy and didn't mind too much. The inside could do with a bit of a refurb but with it being so warm we were outside anyway. If you expect a 5* dining experience this isn't your place but if you just want some pub grub after a walk I would advise it!

I felt sorry for the server. If I was him, I'd have been embarrassed to serve people with the "food" offered at this seriously under-achieving pub. The owners need to employ someone who can cook. I had a burger. It was awful. Dry, No seasoning, tomato sliced without any care. "Vintage Cheddar cheese" on the burger was nothing of the sort. It was barely cheese at all. More likely to be the horrid, processed "cheese food" slices you get on fairground burgers. In fact, it probably wasn't even that good. There was bacon supplied with the burger and despite asking for it to be well cooked, it was just this side of raw. The brioche bun clearly was stale and there was no "caramelised red onion" within a mile of my plate. As for the chips, they were withered and leathery.

I have a canal boat and we often cruise up to the navigation for a meal and stay on the boat overnight but recently we arrived late at night didn't have an evening meal in the Navigation but went in for breakfast instead for the first time and it was excellent.

Enjoyed a great evening with friends at the Navigation Inn. Excellent beer, very friendly pub, great staff and superb pub food. It doesn't get much better than this. A traditional pub that has a restaurant combined in the same space - difficult to achieve a balance but this place does it very well!

We stayed for a weekend. Room 5 was very comfortable and quiet. We ate both evenings in the restaurant. It was lovely to eat fresh food all homemade as opposed to processed freezer food often served in pubs. Staff were friendly and very professional. Vegetarian choice was good and breakfast had good options. We would like to thank all the staff for making our stay so enjoyable

set on a quiet and scenic road not far from the centre of hope, you'll be met by friendly staff and i have to admit my black pudding in chicken, new potatoes, cabbage and sauce melted, throw in a decent choice of starters and desserts not to mention a good choice of alcoholic beverages and your in for a nice dining experience.
