We stayed here for 2 nights. Our hostess was very lovely and helpful and remembered our names each time we saw her. I can't comment on value for money as we used a voucher we were given. The room was clean and adequate for us, with WiFi access, tea and coffee, and a TV, and the bed was relatively comfortable. The only thing I can complain about (which is out of the owner's control) was the strong smell of cow manure from the fields nearby, but we needed to have the windows open because the room was warm so just had to put up with that smell. We were asked what we would like on our breakfast and what time we would like it, and it was very nice, a lovely freshly cooked full English and toast. We ate in the restaurant on the first night and the food was lovely. My husband isn't a big fan of Chinese usually but he really enjoyed it. If you don't want to eat there it's a bit of a drive to find somewhere else to eat. We drove about 15 mins to the King's Head in Marsham. There are lots of places to visit in the surrounding areas like fountains Abbey, Ripon, James Heriot related places. Would happily recommend this place and would stay again.

Thought we'd give it a go as live locally. Very basic uninspiring surroundings but it's all about the food isn't it? How wrong we were. Ordered beef with ginger and spring onions. Had to wade through a mountain of chopped onion to find the beef and spring onions. Tinned ginger I'm sure. Very bland. Asked for pineapple to be added - there were two small chunks! Lemon chicken was bland. Beef in black bean sauce again mixed with a pile of chopped onions and very bland. The food was not piping hot when it arrived. The rice was not 'fragrant' and again, yes you've guessed it - bland. Has the makings of such a great Chinese restaurant which we sadly lack in this neck of the woods, but they need to sort themselves out and stop charging these prices when using cheap ingredients - it really shows!!!

Was looking forward to this meal as seen good reviews and heard from friends was good but we had poor experience. Was seated pretty quickly and drinks order taken swiftly. I asked what seafood was in the mixed seafood dish - I asked if squid, king scallops, and king prawns. I was informed yes it was that but with other bits! Bits! When the dish arrived the other bit was a green lipped mussel - the scallops were not king scallops. I informed the staff that the other ' bit' was a mussel and they replied saying oh yes we remember now after seeing it. My husband ordered schezwan chicken - waitress wrote down spicy chicken. What came out did not resemble schezwan chicken - it was chicken in a bright red gloopy sauce. No one came round to ask us how the meal was so we couldn't advise at that stage. When we got up to leave the table to pay the next table to us had ordered schezwan chicken which looked totally different to our dish. We went to pay and my husband poitely said the food was ok but the dish was not schezwan chicken. Jacqui got very defensive and said well it was schezwan chicken cos I brought it to your table. I advised that next table had just got their dish whic looked different to ours. Then it came - the reply in a raised voice was EH!. Question to management - do you think this manner and tone is acceptable to customers? There were also younger staff in ear shot to this reply . This does not give a good impression to younger staff that that this was an acceptable way to talk. I suggest Jacqui is enrolled on a customer service course asap! Expensive for average food and Jacqui's appaling attitude.Won't be returning. EH!

We last came here 10 years ago when it was a quintessential English country pub with oak panelling and a chalk board with daily specials. The current owners bought it five years ago, survived Covid, and have transformed it into a bright and breezy bar and a large restaurant serving Cantonese food. There are also seven hotel rooms. Faced with a lengthy menu for dinner we opted for the two sharing platters which were effectively Chinese tapas: very tasty and filling. The local Pennine Bitter went down very well. Our bedroom, a family room, was huge and well equipped. It was also soundproof. Breakfast was a simple fruit juice, full English and toast: nothing else was offered. Service was brisk and friendly. Overall it was a most enjoyable experience. We chose it this time as the price was reasonable and we were curious about its transformation from English pub to Chinese restaurant. Next time we are looking for an overnight stop in the area we will return.

I had two dishes from the Tongue Teaser Menu which is available from Monday to Thursday. With it being a teaser menu I thought I would possibly get smaller portions but what I got was quite generous and definitely filling. I would come here again in the future. We stayed for two nights in this old country pub/restaurant. The present owners moved in three years ago and I suspect it was pretty run down. You can tell the parts they haven't got to for refurbishment yet. Our room was small but had comfortable beds, TV, tea & coffee making and a goo, hot powerful shower. AS an old building the stairs are pretty steep. The restaurant serves great Chinese food and a good "full english". What made it special was the friendly, helpful staff who made us feel really special. We'll certainly go back if we're in the area agin.

I hate to write a critical review, especially in current times, but last evenings takeaway was very disappointing. Firstly the good points, ordered by phone, our food was ready on time to collect, was hot and nicely packaged. The steamed chicken was very good quality and tender, and our mixed starters were really nice as usual. Portion size was excellent. However, my chicken chow mein with soft noodles- was mainly just noodles! Very few vegetables apart from onions, and very bland with little seasoning in evidence. My wife had the chicken with cashews, a reasonable mix of vegetables chicken and cashews, but again, very bland. The fried rice was more like warmed up rice. Sadly, this is the worst meal we have had from the Nags Head.

This was our first visit to the Nags Head since it changed hands and we should not have waited so long! The decor is superb and the staff were so welcoming. We studied the menu and our waitress was there to help with what some of the items had in them. My wife is a vegetarian and has got used to having a relatively poor selection of vegetarian offerings but here there was a full page of the menu devoted to vegetarian items. I made a comment that it was a pity that their set meals did not include one suitable for either a vegetarian couple or, as in our case, a mixed vegetarian and meat eater! The response was immediate - the waitress offered to go and talk to the chef about producing a set meal for the two of us - and offer which we declined on this occasion but which she assured us could be done if we let her know when we booked for the next visit. That said, the food was exceptional - possibly one of the best chinese meals we have ever had. Hot, well cooked and plentiful, we enjoyed starters, mains and I enjoyed a superb Banana fritter where the batter was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside - beautiful. This should be on your list of places to eat - we will be back very soon!!

Myself and my family visited the Nags Head to have a meal to celebrate my Mothers 70th birthday. Upon entering the drab looking interior were greeted by an abrupt gentleman (gentleman used very loosely). We had pre booked a table to accommodate nine adults and two children, we were marched into a 'locals' back bar to look at meal options on a blackboard, opposed to having menus at the table. We ordered a round of drinks including two pints of cider for my partner and I. The cider was flat (not just a little it was flatter than a steam rolled pancake). Taking it back to the bar, I explained the drinks were flat to which the mans reply was "well I can't do anything it's pre-gassed". I requested for them to either be replaced with another cider that wasn't flat or a different drink all together. Although clearly showing his frustration in the situation he managed to find a bottle of the same cider (Thatchers Gold) as he was serving on tap which looked and tasted as it should. As the menu wasn't the most appealing and quite pricey, the mans bad attitude was enough for us to decide to settle up the bar tab and leave to find somewhere a bit more welcoming. Upon paying the bill the man then decided to strike up another argument that it's nothing to do with him that the cider was flat and that's just how it is. Maybe if he cleaned his beer/cider lines once in a while and renovated his glasses the products would be in better shape once poured. Who knows he might even manage to sell some if it tasted better, perhaps he could also tone down his terrible attitude.

It certainly showed ! The grouse , served off the bone as requested, was declared to be fantastic. Indeed, the whole meal was a sheer delight. Pity it is so far away from where we live. As soon as we entered the establishment, looking forward to a relaxing meal and drinks afterwards, we were met with a barked order to get into another room. (There were numerous empty tables where we were.) Despite insisting we were not part of another group, we were told in the rudest of manners to "get in the other room" and that we would be made to wait for a long time for any food we might order (seemingly as punishment for having the nerve to enter the establishment when we felt he clearly did not want us to be there). We cannot emphasis enough the vitreol and contempt in the words of the man; we were completely taken aback. Despite our insistence we were not part of another group, we were ordered in to a back room. Needless to say we left without ordering anything and we will never return.

What can I say, the owners of the Nags Head country Inn should not be in the industry!! Avoid like the plague. I previously wrote about the proprietors double booking me, and now the update is that they, misleadingly offered compensation of £22. This in fact was not compensation it was the difference between the cost of the room they booked in lieu of messing up my booking with them. They sent a confirmation to the booking agents to confirm my booking, and accepted another booking, afterwards, for three people, who I suspect were having dinner on the evening in question with them, we were not dining with them. My annoyance is compounded by the fact that it took almost 90 mins to find another room and that was a further 20-25 mins away. I was put out by having to turn up in Pichill and then to travel to the alternative accommodation. Whilst I was waiting for the landlady to sort out the mess created by her or her husband, she received a call from the agents that I had booked the room with. She complained that she couldn't understand the foreigner on the end of the phone, gave her details and then slammed the phone down exclaiming, and I quote, "bloody foreigners", I was shocked. I have complained to the booking agents that whilst she apologised, I felt it was hollow. Well I am sad to say that the hollow apology has been confirmed by the fact that they are adamant that I am not to receive any compensation from The Nags Head for the wasted journey to Pichill or the time I spent waiting in the bar, buying drinks, while a room was found for me or indeed the travel to the new venue. I also bought three bottles of wine to take away at a cost of £63. I was due for dinner at friends that night and I was of course late due to the lazy, incompetent behaviour of those in charge of the Nags Head. "It's only happened on two other occasions" does not help me.To show how out of touch the owners are, they told me to come back and give them a try and gave me a card. I can confirm that I will never visit Pichill let alone darken the racist owners of the Nags Head Country Inn!!

sometimes you find yourself alone at lunchtime wondering if the pub is empty because the chips are soggy and the beer flat. I have no idea why this place was empty. The wine selection was adequate, the ales at cask marque cool and the food was special. The mass had two starters and I went down market with the burger all of which were good enough to entice us back a few days later for a sunday dinner, Again the place was sparse of folk but the food was again surprisingly good. The dessert, a peanut butter bomb alaska was richer than a Saudi prince and surrounded by peanut brittle, maple syrup jellies and an array of flavour bombs of fruit concentrate and caramels. Sort of makes me glad we have moved to Bedale as this place will become a regular for when I want to impress visitors and show them a pretty little village.

Needed somewhere to meet some old friends for dinner halfway-ish between where we live and where our friends were staying in the Yorkshire Dales and chose this because of the good reviews. We certainly weren't disappointed. It's in quite an out of the way place but worth the drive. Food, service, ambience all brilliant. Will return.

Large car park to rear and access to rooms from front and rear of hotel. We ate at the bar which was friendly and well decorated with racing memorabilia and local breweries .The menu is varied and I changed my mind a dozen times before ordering - the food is absolutely first class with every item cooked to perfection with portions sizes ideal.Breakfast is equally good and was relaxed and very pleasant. My friends and I recently visited The Nags Head Inn for lunch. The food was lovely but the manager/owners attitude was awful and has ensured that neither myself or any of the 13 others we dined with will ever return here. When we arrived we asked if we could order our food and pay separate. I understand that this may be a bit of a pain and a simple "no I will have to bill you altogether" would have sufficed but the actual response we received was basically no, I'm not messing about and I'll take your drinks orders first before I take any food orders! Terrible attitude and he managed to make everyone feel uncomfortable from the off. Talk about customer service! The same gentleman repeatedly chastised his staff member, calling him "stupid" loudly for all of our group to hear. The poor man had simply put down a few condiments in the wrong place from what I could gather. Regardless of the issue anyway, to shout at him in front of a room full of people like he did, was really out of order and a quiet word in the back would have been more professional. Also, when one of our friends was unable to eat her fish due to a couple of bones that were present, he basically argued that she should eat the rest as they would definitely be the only bones in it. After she told him that she no longer wanted it he carried on repeating that there would be no other bones present. "If you eat the rest there'll be no more bones". "You've probably ate the only part with bones"... She already felt uncomfortable without being made to feel even worse! Strangely enough, we had eaten here the day before and received excellent service by the same gentleman but on this occasion he completely let both himself and his business down. All in all, lovely setting with lovely food but disgusting customer service!!

We recently visited the Nags Head with friends for evening dinner. This was my partner and I first visit but the other four had been before and had booked for us all. Nice welcome and quickly shown to the bar and got some nice 'nibbles' with our drinks while we looked through the excellent choices on the quite large menu. Shown to our table in a nice dining room, with welcome advice from the pleasant staff. Starters arrived and we all tucked in - my partners tempura prawns were rated very good as was my pigeon breast salad. Just a short wait and then the main courses were delivered to table. A wide selection, and the salmon got an approving nod, as did my pork - very tasty, but I think the prize went to the venison, which got very high approval from my friends. The cooking and presentation were of a high order on all the dishes, and the chef is to be commended. Pretty full, we shared a dark chocolate salted caramel sponge for dessert - very rich and a great finishing dish before coffee. Will certainly return and can definitely recommend.

We first found this restaurant a few years ago when it was signposted off the A1 and we were looking for somewhere to eat. It was perfect, only five minutes from the motorway, with a warm welcome and fantastic food. We have continued to visit every time we travel up or down the A1 from our home in the North. Due to the roadworks and the alterations to the A1 this restaurant is not as easy to find as previously. However I recommend anyone looking for a lovely pub and restaurant to take the time to turn off the road and visit it. You won't be disappointed, lovely food, lovely staff. Turn off at junction 51 when heading south and junction 50 when heading North.

I visited here a few years ago & when driving north this time, we thought we would try it again for Sunday lunch. I am pleased we did. Excellent choice of wonderful food. Well presented. We will definitely be back. The highlights were liver parfait, belly pork & sticky toffee pud though my family would probably chose others too!

Just home from a lovely weekend at the Naggs Head with friends. The rooms were clean and the food was excellent. There was however, one main criticism which we feel did have a significant impact on our stay. On arrival, we weren't made to feel particularly welcome. We later went down to the restaurant for our evening meal calling at reception and asked if we could buy a bottle of wine that was on offer in the reception area. To be fair it did state "to take out" but on asking if we could take it to our room Edward curtly said "No! I have a living to make". Maybe we shouldn't have asked! We were told to sit at a table of Edwards choice (even though there was no one else dining at the time). It was opposite the bar and after ordering our meal it arrived swiftly by a friendly and pleasant waiter. Throughout our meal we felt we were being watched and scrutinised by Edward and the meal although excellent, made us feel quite uncomfortable. We retreated to our rooms as soon as possible without purchasing any further drinks at the bar. Breakfast was served by a lovely member of staff who actually chatted to us, made us feel very welcome and gave us some information of where to visit. This again was followed for breakfast on our second day when she took the time to ask us if we had had a good day previously. We checked out at approx 10.20am and paid our bill. Once again, we were made to feel uncomfortable by Jan after asking if it would be ok to leave in approx half an hour (bearing in mind check out is 11am); Jan simply looked at her watch and didn't even answer. We left almost immediately. We couldn't fault the accommodation, the food or the service but feel that the proprietors do need some training in their social and interpersonal skills.

We were lucky enough to be invited to a friend's birthday celebration. There were about 50 in our party. The celebration started in the bar with drinks. The food was delicious with a selection of shared starters including olives, smoked salmon, sundried tomatoes, whitebait, all beautifully cooked. My main was the duck leg cassoulet and my husband had the roast beef. The cassoulet came with mashed potato and the roast beef came with a Yorkshire pudding and vegetables (nicely without butter). Pudding for me was a chocolate mill feuille and my husband had sticky toffee pudding. Both were absolutely delicious. You cannot fault the food here. Service was efficient and could be described as overly swift.

Used this establishment for lunch with Old friends. We were probably the first customers of the day at noon and felt pushed into ordering our lunch early. The Landlord and staff were over fussy and over attentive. After a lecture on the difference between steak pie and pudding , I stupidly ordered the pudding. It was over microwaved, dry and tasteless. Two of my party ordered fish and chips. While the fish was very good the chips were soggy. I had the misfortune to visit the toilet. It was obvious that it had neither been inspected or cleaned from the previous day, with excrement both around the bowl and attached to the seat. A very unfortunate visit.

I recently stayed here with a group of friends for a day at Ripon Racecourse. The Inn is in a small village near to Ripon. Rooms are nice and clean with everything you would expect to find: TV, toiletries, coffee making facilities etc. The owners organised a light lunch for us, sandwiches, chips and salad, and organised a minibus to take us to the racecourse and collect us. He also sorted out our entry tickets, which we collected from a little hut at the racecourse. In the evening we enjoyed a delicious meal. The layout being perfect for a group of ten as we had a large table which we could all sit around together. The young waiter was very attentive and extremely polite, a credit to the place, didn't get his name I'm afraid. Breakfast was also of a very high quality, beautifully presented and cooked to perfection. My only disappointment of the weekend: I had a starter and couldn't manage a pudding!!!
