I had my reservations about going to The Tea House at 23 Cannon Street Preston as several months ago we had problems! All our food then had been delivered at different times! But as our friend whose birthday it was requested we go there for our lunch I was prepared to give it the benefit of the doubt. Bad move! The only good thing this tea house is good for is its amazing selection of teas and the occasional cake! They originally started out with teas and a snack menu and over time expanded to an overly ambitious menu! Our starter which was only garlic bread took almost 15 minutes. Then our main course arrived extremely late. 1 plate was boiling hot, 2 of the meals were luke warm and the final plate was cold and tasteless. The roast potatoes were almost black and burnt so we asked for them to be replaced with mash. Those arrived luke warm and some cold. When we first arrived at the restaurant on Saturday 11th November it seemed warm and inviting. We were sat close to the door which opened out onto the street and we would get blasts of cold air as people went and came. I believe the temps outside were 9 degrees centrigade and very cold! Worse half way through our meal we began to feel the cold more! Then we realised why the restaurant had switched off their heating!!!!!!!!!!!! The overpriced food and drink did not warrant being subjected to sub temperatures. We stupidly ordered their cakes for dessert and once again were extremely disappointed. At the end of the meal I spoke with a very young manageress who insisted our food was tested with thermometers. I've never heard such a pathetic excuse! She also said she was training 4 staff and yes the menu was over ambitious as I told her it was obvious they could not cope with the numbers! We asked for a reduction for the disastrous meal to which she said she needed to go and check it out with someone. Probably the owner! She came back and offered us each a choice of a 30g bag of tea which I found extremely insulting! I told her we would never come here again! The last few days I've been full of a cold and can only put it down to the sub temps environment I had to endure in the tea house!

Found this hidden gem today. The food was delightful. The service impeccable. The choice of teas was extensive I settled for ginger and lemon tea which was served with lemon slices and honey. It was lovely. We had soup the young cabbage soup was wonderful as was the tomato and rice which to me sounded strange but the taste was remarkable. Served which fresh homemade bread. Although I was quite full after a rather large bowl. I couldn’t resist the bisscof cake Layers of loveliness cream and toffee sauce All in all a wonderful experience. I shall be going again. Next time to try there bigos Would highly recommend

Quaint tea house at the bottom end of Cannon Street. Didn’t know this place even existed. Glad we took the wrong road, and found this place. Plenty of seating & tables. All clean. Friendly staff. Great choice of teas on offer. We chose a piece of Biscoff cheesecake to have with our teas. Very tasty. Good menu on offer too. Will return.

We called in for lunch today, my Polish partner and I, with our 22 month old baby. It was the promise of good quality traditional Polish cuisine that drew us to the cafe. We were not disappointed! My partner ordered the Golabki, (stuffed cabbage) with mashed potatoes and salad, I opted for the potato pancake with pork stroganoff, also with Polish salad. The portions were absolutely huge, and the food was delicious! We waited for quite a while to be served, but it was an early lunch for us, and to be honest I would have been disappointed if the food had turned up too quickly after we had ordered. It was obvious that the food had been cooked fresh to order and was well worth the wait! Our waiter was very attentive and informative, the Earl Grey tea I ordered was delicious, proper tea leaves in a delightful pot, served with milk and the option of an individual pot of honey. Altogether a very pleasant dining experience, nice little cafe, excellent service, good quality food and plenty of it! Excellent!

I saw this place had got bit of stick for its breakfasts so I thought I’d relay my recent positive experience. Had the vegetarian one and, as per the picture, it was a decent spread and all nicely cooked. The aubergine a bit left field and not sure it works for brekkie, but vive le difference. Was ready in about 10-15 minutes and the young guy running the place was very friendly. Extensive tea menu, obviously, for those who want to get involved. Would like to go back and sample some of the Polish dishes on the evening menu.

We saw a picture of the breakfast on a board which looked very good! So went in search of this cafe, absolutely awful! Tea was weak something...coffee okish, but the Breakfast looked nothing like the picture advertising it! Toast was luke warm bread, bacon hardly cooked, sausages practically raw, beans cold, and salad on the plate with breakfast??? £24 for 3 breakfast,1 tea & coffee & a diet coke...how this place has great reviews I do not know!!

I have NO idea why this place has received ANY positive reviews!! We are still speaking about our visit in amazement! And NOT the happy satisfied kind!! Place very quirky... which is ok! Lots to look at! Gives you something to do during the long wait for your food to arrive ! Staff friendly enough. Huge tea menu ... but that’s where the praise must stop! We opted for coffee... only because we didn’t fancy tea at that point! Coffee bitter with a strange aftertaste! Cups appeared cloudy ..well used or just dirty? We didn’t notice until the cups were almost empty! Cake utterly inedible! Just truly weird ... yet was ostensibly just strawberries, cream and sponge! After a couple of tastes, it was left on the plate! Two bacon barms took a long time to arrive ... yet the bacon was pale with barely cooked fat!! 🤮 and arrived with the bread rock hard..( left under a heat lamp too long?) The place was almost empty, so why the delay? A visit to the toilets meant a delve into the lower level, down very steep stairs! Past the kitchen and stores, past kitchen staff, to finally get to the loo! Seriously cannot think of anything positive to say about this place!!

Lovely place with an amazing tea offering, 2x pages worth of fresh tea. Only small niggle I'd like to say is that I wish all teas would be served in tea pots and there was a plate to place brewed tea strainers on. Great offering tea wise, you can have either milk or lemon/honey with teas- oh and the cakes and food soo far have been amazing!

Sadly I have to report that this once quite magical little place has not benefitted from a change of ownership. When the place first opened a few years back it was an interesting and quirky little bolt hole to step into while shopping in the city centre. More importantly the customer service was almost always very good with the owner making sure everyone was fussed over and catered for efficiently and well. Unfortunately this was not the case when my wife and I visited last Saturday. The service was deplorable with no welcome - no one came to the table to ask us if we would like to order and I had to go to the bar to ask them if it was table service or not. Excuses that they were busy really didn't compute as it was certainly mostly empty down stairs where we were sitting. On top of that the tea served was barely luke warm and the food itself took forever to arrive. We were told the original owner had gone to Africa - what a pity. We won't be indulging again I'm afraid.

Since it’s been taken over I went back to try the vegan stew again, I was happy to see they still had gluten free bread on offer as a side however the stew was disappointing to say the least. It was a bowl of brown sludge with chunks of mushy a aubergine and hard kidney beans. It has an overwhelming sent of vinegar and it was a challenge to eat. The more I ate the better it got but not nearly enough for me to be returning, For the rest of the day I felt quite ill. My dad also tried it on a separate occasion and said it wasn’t terrible but not amazing and won’t be returning either. The selection of teas is highly impressive and they do do the tea well.

Visited here to get out of the rain after a lovey walk around The park. Friendly quick table service. An absolute huge tea menu.. so many typesTo choose from. Toastie, cheesecake and Greek salary was incredible. Never thought of gherkins on a toastie, game changer, and very tasty. Tea arrived in a mug with no handle, deliberate, honey on the table no sign of milk (didn’t want to ask in case it ruined the tea) a strange metal straw arrived for “stomping” the leaves and sucking through the tea to avoid the bits! Brilliant lovely chilled place. I loved it. Pity to sun came out we could have stayed here all afternoon. £23 for two snacks and two drinks very reasonable. Highly recommended.

We didn’t know this place was under new management as of 30/11/2019. It seems very similar inside but such a shame that there was loud pop/ dance music on during our visit that kinda spoilt the chilled vibe and ability to converse anywhere near the speaker! Luckily we had a table away from the speakers but still a little noisy. We chose the meat pierogi and the mushroom and cabbage pierogi both on the specials, this was very tasty and filling. We had two single pots of tea, I had the chocolate and strawberry one which was yummy. We finished with cakes - the coffee and custard cake which my mum enjoyed but wasn’t for me! And we had the cheesecake which was great. All came to £23 so good value. Cash only on our visit, there was a sign, but not very visible which led to problems with some other customers! They could display it more visibly. Overall a good trip.

My husband took me here for my birthday as a treat , he knows That I like quirky and thought this place would be right up my street as well as accommodate all my intolerances as described on internet. On entering the premises I felt a little excited , slight aroma of incense in the air , not over crowded and uniquely eclectic interior. Despite the fact that the place was close to empty we weren’t greeted by any members of staff , so we found a seat. On front of the tea menu it stated that we were to make ourselves comfortable and a member of staff would come to take our order . It appeared that staff were happy to go to every other table to collect orders but ours .

The food here is really something special! They have a great menu of lunch items - soups and stews, toasties, wraps, salads, and the great open baguettes. We had the soup of the day which was so tasty and served with plenty of soft white bread, and the delicous Tuscani baguette. Great value for money also. I personally prefer the brighter, lighter upstairs space, but the all-round atmosphere of the place oozes friendliness, thanks to the kind staff. I really wanted to like Mystery Tea House, because my partner does. At first, it looked like things were going well. The main meals weren't very exciting, but the cakes and tea sounded interesting. The problems began when I told the waitress I was thinking of getting a blooming tea, but didn't know which one. She said "well, Star Rose sounds nice" and then waited expectantly. When I didn't respond - because she hadn't given me any new information to make a decision with - she added "I haven't actually tried any of them, but I'd guess they were all fruity." I'm quite surprised that the cafe doesn't encourage its staff to try the teas, especially since there aren't any descriptions on the menu. I'm also baffled as to why the waitress thought offering the name would be useful. I can read the names. That's the one piece of information I do have about the teas.

Out for a quick lunch with our vegan branch of the family - ‘It’s a bit different, but you’ll like it’. The atmosphere was a bit ‘tree hugging’ / hippy. The decor was drabish or dour. Staff were great and the menu to suit most diets - slightly leaning to the vegetarian - but ok for us carnivores. We ordered food, the portions were hearty and all the ingredients obviously fresh that day. Extremely tasty and simply presented. We kept our table for a good couple of hours and at no time did we feel under pressure to leave. Cosy tea house offering a vast choice of teas and some tasty snacks and light bites. Lovely experience, almost like having tea in a friend's house.

Having heard a lot about this place I finally managed to get here for lunch. It was very busy, but we got a table. Our drinks came fairly quickly but the three meals took a long time. The food was very tasty and we enjoyed our meal. My main problem was the fact that on the menu various dishes were listed as wheat free or vegan. I chose a wheat free vegan meal. However it was served with normal bread. I asked if it was wheat free, and was told I should have requested wheat free bread on ordering. I didn't even know the dish came with bread, so how was I supposed to know? They happily brought me gluten free bread, but served with 3 pats of dairy butter. This was a vegan meal!! I explained to the waitress that really they should not be placing dairy butter into the basket of bread. I just have an intolerance, and am not vegan, so it was not such a problem. However I know for other vegans in my family it would have been. The waitress apologised, but I didn't feel that she really understood the issue.

I came here on a Sunday afternoon. The service was great. The tea menu was long and, not being a tea buff, asked for a recommendation. A little while later I was having a Himalayan Adventure all to myself and delightful it was too. The food menu was shorter than the tea menu and a good job too otherwise I would still be there reading it. The food was good - simple but good. I highly recommend this Tea House as a better alternative to the national chains. Oh, and the service was great too.

I visited here earlier this year with some friends for tea, and we're delighted to discover not only an extensive range of exotic teas to try, but also juices and food too! A lot of vegetarian options too which was a plus for me, and everything we ordered came quickly and was delicious. The staff were friendly and inviting, and in the shop downstairs there was so much to buy or just (in my case) gawp intently at! This place is a real find- if you're looking for something a little different to the standard 'afternoon tea' that is so popular lately then I'd definitely recommend here as its really so refreshing and unique for around here! Will definitely be back!

On one of my many visits to Preston, I found myself having a special lunch in this special restaurant. A vegans' haven, You know exactly what You're eating here and where it's been sourced. Food is treated preciously, as well as customers. We should have a Mystery Tea House in every city and town of the UK!

The food on offer is pretty simple; toasties and soups, but the ingridients seemed fresh and the food tasted good. There's about 4x pages of tea to choose from so that's great. Everything was reasonably priced - lunch for 3x of us inc drinks was £20. The staff were really polite too. The only reason I'm rating it lower was for the general decor and furniture seemed quite cheap, perhaps some more variety in food would be nice. But overall an ok place if you're local looking to grab lunch somewhere but not really worth going out of your way for.

Been here multiple times and will come a lot more. The staff are lovely and so knowledgable about all the teas on offer. There is a huge range of teas to drink there and also to buy as loose leaf for home. The cakes and sandwiches are marvellous and the soups/stews are to die for! They also have a fab range of tea pots and cups that now fill up my cupboards. Always feel very welcome as soon as I walk through the door and the atmosphere is so relaxing. Such a good place for a break during shopping or a place to read, relax and take in the ever changing artwork on the walls. Keep being fabulous mystery tea house

I called into the mystery tea house today. The lovely friendly girl behind the counter advised the pear green tea. It was her favourite she said- she was right. Enjoyed it so much I bought a pack to take home and one for my daughter. Also they sell blooming tea, which opens up in a gorgeous flower when water poured on. Bought four of those for a gift. It's very affordable there too £2 50 for pot of pear green tea- gives 4 or 5 small cups of tea. The taste is lovely, you could never buy it in the shops. Infact it makes shop bought tea taste dust. Thank you.

I didn't know about this place until I did some research into loose leaf tea stockists near me. They do a good variety of tea and staff are knowledgeable about which would be best for my tastes.

The staff are super friendly, almost loving in their reception of their guests. You feel like you are family. Nothing is too much trouble. The food is great, it is well cooked and a good serving. It is the only tea house, restaurant my daughter asks to go to, and will eat inside with no complaints. They have unusual and flavoursome teas, at reasonable prices, and unusual drinks such as cactus juice and banana juice. Cannot recommend this tea shop highly enough. It is super. If you are reading this, please, please go and try it for yourself. You will not be disappointed. Anyone we have taken there loves it ..

We have now visited twice and wished we had been sooner. called after walking our dog on Avenham Park. dogs allowed downstairs and the staff offered him water as soon as we went it as it was a hot day. not a big tea drinker but enjoyed trying the two different teas we had. service was a little slow on the second time we visited but it was quite busy and the service was so freindly and the atmosphere so chilled it was good to sit back and relax. will make it a regular call when out walking with our Dog

We've never been to Preston before the cafe looked nice and inviting from the kerb, inside was nice, staff curtious.its a shame food was below standard. The pie was so hard and stale, the gravy was a thick tasteless gloom. The burger was one you would get in a Pizza shop. Not good at all.

Situated on a junction controlled by traffic lights made it difficult to enter the small and compact car park. Having eventually parked the car I was please that I’d stopped here. Inside, the premises have been tastefully designed and converted from what was probably a Bank. It has is a small room where you can sit which has a large safe/vault door. The rest of the premises have a variety of tables and chairs spread around the room. There is also outdoor seating with canopies covering them. Our coffees were very good along with some Biscotti biscuits. It was nice to relax on a Sunday afternoon reading a newspaper whilst it poured with rain outside.

Really great night and a special shout out for Max, who made my wife’s night with a special cocktail. Max was attentive through the night, engaging in our conversation and generally being a great host. Will definitely be returning!!!!

Bernadette & I called in for a "Light Lunch" after we had been performing on Preston Flag Market" Our first visit to The Larder. We were made very welcome - the food was marvellous - far outweighing our expectations. The place has a wonderful relaxed atmosphere. Well done I can honestly say - never, in my 68 years, have I had a baked potato, served to me, that looked so appetising.
