I am not usually a fan of Robinson’s pubs but the Black Horse is the exception that proves the rule. It’s a beautiful ‘arts and crafts’ style with an outstanding range of non-Robinson’s beers. I plumped for a Lancaster Brewery offering that was tasty and well kept. Also of note is there’s an upstairs which, when we were there, had over 17 different ciders on. Great pub.

Four Robbies (incl Old Tom winter ale at 8.5%..years ago it was only sold in 1/3 pint glasses..because one pint got you drunk!) plus five guest ales and a real cider. Jorvic had a pint of Lakeland Gold at 4.4% from Lakeland. Madge however did not like any of the lagers and had a Pepsi. Lovely pub, super architecture. An absolute gem right in the heart of Preston. An amazing (proper) pub full of charm and character. Real ale connoisseurs dream with many cask ale pubs constantly changing and many awards for their efforts. Beer prices are slightly higher than other pubs in the area but its definitely worth it! Old style decor and a knowledgeable barman who offered a selection of ciders to my taste without hesitation. Great jukebox inside where you can select your own taste in music which was a refreshing change. So good, our friends went again a few days later! With a largely unchanged Victorian interior, this pub is a work or art. Several separate spaces including two front snugs, a tap room and a charming seating booth at the far end radiate around the central bar and with some impressive mosaic floor tiling and internal glazed windows above the island bar it would be worth going out of your way to visit just for that. But then factor in a superb ale range, despite being a Robinson’s tied house and you have a must visit pub.
The ale selection available on my visit included four ales from the Robinson brand and four guests. Brilliant to see Robinson's Old Tom on pump alongside Robinsons Unicorn, Dizzy Blonde Amarillo Pale and White Label Pale Ale .The guests were Castle Rock Screech Owl, White Horse Wayland Smithy, Ossett White Rat and Titanic Plum Porter Special Reserve. If I hadn’t been on a crawl I could have spent all day here.
