So sad to see the demise of the pubs pretty country garden which was always such a lovely spot to sit on a sunny day. The refurbishment has seen it turned it into an ugly town centre style yard come sports bar. Such a shame for a country pub that has always been a friendly place for a pint and bite to eat.

The Wheatsheaf was our go-to pub for many years as it is about a mile walk from our house and felt like a beautiful country pub with lots of character, our favorite part being the beautiful beer garden. It was absolutely beautiful sitting there on sunny days in what was a peaceful rural haven, watching the birds fly in and out of the hedgerows and enjoying some lovely food and drinks. Although the current owners of the pub are very friendly, the food isn't as good as it used to be, but is still pretty decent, if not slightly expensive for what you get. The beer offering is very generic now, would like to see more craft or cask ales on offer. The most disappointing aspect for us on our recent visit is that the beautiful beer garden has been refurbished. By that, I mean every single hedge and plant replaced with plain grey decking, concrete and beer branded umbrellas - making it look and feel like a generic beer garden in the centre of Preston City centre, not the lovely rural retreat it once was. I feel this is a terrible shame. It's more of an outdoor sports bar atmosphere, no character at all. I understand that a garden comes with maintenance costs, however I don't feel the refurb has done anything other than make it feel plain and cold, far from wha t was once a really beautiful place to visit.

Visited this place many times over the years and never really faulted the food, however this time was terrible. I ordered the 'Homemade' cheese pie as I've had many times before and was delicious, it used to be made with short crust pastry, a big round pie cut into slices. This time it was grey sloppy mash potato with chunks of red onion in a small dish with a frozen puff pastry lid plonked on top. I had a couple of mouthfuls and couldn't eat the rest, it came with a handful of chips and small pot of beans, which I ate as I had paid £13.95, very overpriced for the sloppy pie. I was with my daughter and she wouldn't even eat as the smell inside was between stale beer and dogs. When one of the staff asked if it was ok I told her it wasn't nice at all. She said that alot of people had complained over the standards of the food as of late and offered me a refund. I was fine with that. However the chef proceeded to come out to me and tell me that I had eaten it all and he would only refund me for the pie, I was fine with that also as I had eaten the chips and beans. As he went back inside I could him arguing with another member of staff that no way was I getting a refund and could hear swearing also. Very unprofessional and would never return. Very Overpriced for the standard of food. I would definitely not return which is a shame as over the year's it was very good food. Also for a Saturday evening on a lovely sunny day at 7pm there was only myself and daughter sat outside (Which is a building site at the minute , probably due to being renovated which is very much needed) and a handful inside, that says it all really as it's the only pub in the small village. Would definitely not recommend anymore. I wish I'd taken pictures now as I normally do but in this occasion didn't.

Went here on a recommendation of a colleague. Only had a nibble and a couple of pints but wouldn’t go out my way to visit again. The service was ok, nothing to write home about. Gentleman behind the bar didn’t really acknowledge us and was more interested in chatting to his colleague than doing his job but it is what it is. The food was ok too. Again, nothing to write home about. It certainly beats a lot of the microwave food you find in pubs these days. The biggest let down was the beer. Guinness and Madri were both tried and were both some of the worst pints I’ve had in a very long time (Guinness was the worst draught I’ve probably ever had, come to think about it). Awful presentation and pour of Guinness (dirty glass, no head, not smooth at all). Madri tasted like they were in desperate need of a line clean. The atmosphere was pleasant and is probably the only reason I would pop in again, but I’ll definitely be ordering something that comes in a can or a bottle. Shame, heard good things but found it to be subpar. I’d probably make the 90 second journey to Guild Merchant next time - food isn’t as good but the pints are much better.

Well worth a visit! Ian

Called in here on the way back from a day trip at Blackpool Zoo. The Landlady was very welcoming, nothing was too much trouble for her, we were met with a friendly, smiley Landlady, which I think speaks volumes, especially when you're not a regular. We hadn't booked and she sorted us a table for 6 people. Food was perfect, service brilliant, it was not overly busy when we called in, which was great but could tell that it will be a popular venue with the locals. Thank you and will definitely call again

This pub was rated 1/5 hygiene many months ago. It would appear that no effort has been made to improve matters. If the owners cannot be bothered to take such things seriously then why should we spend money there? The only village pub but regretfully cannot return until this important matter of personal health safety is taken seriously

Been a few months since visited and they now have a new menu and chef. Previously food has been A1 but this time it was mediocre at best. One of our party ordered garlic bread to start and this was basically just toast with garlic butter. Lots of menu items not available too which was disappointing for a Saturday evening too. Sadly based on our latest experience I doubt we will return in a hurry as there are currently better eateries within the area

Just back from an excellent lunch with three friends. I haven’t been to the Wheatsheaf for many years but will be back very soon after the experience today. We were all delighted with the quality and price , (no ding and ping here) of the food served. I had fish pie . Served piping hot and very tasty. Two of my friend had steak pie which was definitely home made. I thought a bit of extra gravy but they were happy enough. And the last choice was fish and chips that looked amazing. The place itself had retained the charm of an old inn and the service was certainly with a smile. I don’t usually put out reviews but I thought this was well worthy

The menu when we arrived was NOT the same as online we were informed for that day and the following week it was a smaller menu but even then there was NO SOUP as a starter. We ended up with a main course of fish and chips and scampi and chips and not the steaks we really wanted for our special day. Therefore we will NOT be returning

Out house hunting in the area and I check Google reviews for the best place in the area to have a meal. Looks nice from outside and I'd guess a refurb In the last 5 years but the outside area in the welcome sunshine was looking very tired! Ordered two steak and ale pies with a kids meal of sausage, chips and beans for the grandson. Steak and Ale pie was mediocre (6.5 out of ten) with the chips having the crispy outer and a fluffy interior being the highlight of the meal. My partner noticed a crispy dried up bay leaf in her pie and some quite frankly manky over microwaved carrots on the plate.. So much for 'seasonal vegatebles' on the menu?! Frozen mixed veg from Aldi would be better than what was served here.. Very disappointed especially regarding the average Google reviews here I hopefully will adjust the 4.6 score because it's so undeserved

Came here based on pubs highest Google reviews of 4.6 in an area of 10 miles. Ordered two steak and ale pies with a child serving of one sausage, chips and beans. Steak and Ale pie was mediocre with my partner having a shriveled bay leaf and quite frankly manky carrots that had been microwaved to death they looked so unappetising.. The outside decking area is looking very tired and the wooden table and chairs seating looking like it's very uncared for. To sum it up it's a pub which has had a refurb maybe 5 years ago and has little investment since. Food is mediocre apart for praise for the chips which were crispy on the outside and fluffy within..

The home cooked food was delicious and served with fab service BUT we have since discovered that the pub has a 1/5 good hygiene rating which means that we won’t be returning anytime soon. As a member of our family is vulnerable, we are aware of the risks of eating out and do normally always check the rating before dining but we forgot to look up the latest score for this establishment. Such a shame about the poor rating! Please improve the food handling, kitchen cleanliness and food safety and then you will be able to request another inspection and hopefully improve your hygiene rating. Otherwise, it’s the cosiest countryside pub which has so much potential if it can only improve its hygiene standards.

Dreadful experience at the Wheatsheaf. Went with family for Sunday lunch. Chose the restaurant as they had good vegetarian options available on the menu. Upon arrival we were notified that the soup was pea and ham, which meant that there were no vegetarian starters on the menu, and that there was no Cheese and Onion Plate pie, which meant that the only vegetarian options were 'Vegetarian Nut Roast' Roast Dinner, Veggie Burger, and a Cheese and Relish Sandwich. I opted for the 'Vegetarian Nut Roast'. After waiting for 45 minutes, with no explanation for the wait, we received our food. Upon looking at my food I soon realised that the gravy on my vegetarian roast dinner had pieces of meat in it. I asked our server whether it was meat gravy, and received the response 'It will be.' My meal was sent back to the kitchen and I was advised that another would be 'right out' and it would be without gravy. I enquired as to whether there was a vegetarian option for gravy available, and was informed that there was not as it had been out of stock. 20 minutes later my family had all finished their meals and mine had not arrived. In the end I left having had no lunch. I have attempted to follow this up with the restaurant via their contact form, but have had no response.

Situated on a junction controlled by traffic lights made it difficult to enter the small and compact car park. Having eventually parked the car I was please that I’d stopped here. Inside, the premises have been tastefully designed and converted from what was probably a Bank. It has is a small room where you can sit which has a large safe/vault door. The rest of the premises have a variety of tables and chairs spread around the room. There is also outdoor seating with canopies covering them. Our coffees were very good along with some Biscotti biscuits. It was nice to relax on a Sunday afternoon reading a newspaper whilst it poured with rain outside.
