We heard about this restaurant from our friends who visited last year and we made a one-day trip to Norwich to try it. Yes - that's how passionate we Malaysians are when it comes to food. Aside from badminton, eating is our best favourite national sports. The food is flavorful and the ambience is lovely. We had Nasi Lemak Ayam Rendang, Nasi Lemak Ayam Berempah, and Pasembur. I also had the Teh Tarik which is served hot - just what I love. I believe the ingredients are locally sourced so it'd be unfair to compare with what my taste buds grew up with. This is good enough for me. It was a truly authentic experience for us overall as we arrived slightly after lunch hours and had the peace and quiet to savour our food at our own sweet time and it totally felt like eating and catching up at the mamak except in a less sweaty, less noisy, and more cozy environment. It felt like home.

Always have our usual the king prawn rice noodles but why do you have to hide the prawns underneath the rice noodles?! That is instead strange, usually they are placed on top but it’s hidden underneath the noodles?! Of course you give us hard and small king prawns (you indeed cannot give customers these kind of prawns) the price is £14.5 already that’s expensive and high, why are you serving these kind of prawns. (My mum was an owner of a restaurant before she now retired) The rice noodles is not even soft texture when we eat it like hard to chew and dry, it should be soft. The food was cold it should be steam hot when it coming out! You gonna try the food first before saying there something wrong 😑 then re-cooked, your not going to know by looking at it (this was the first time the presentation look bad, other times it’s not that bad)

This was our second visit to this restaurant - the food is so delicious and the service was wonderful so we will be back again as soon as we can! We had roti and dal and salt & pepper tofu to start with, both were fantastic. We both had randang curries for the main, the subtle coconut flavour of the rice worked really well with the mild spice in the dish. There are both vegan and meat options so it didn't feel like a compromise. There is no alcohol served, but we didn't feel we missed out as they have lots of alcohol free wine, beer and spirit options as well as soft drinks. There are also plenty of pubs around for a pre- or post-dinner drink. We feel so lucky that Norwich has a Malaysian restaurant, it is a nice change from the usual standard options.

First time eating here and so glad we did! The food was wonderful rich in flavour, tasty and delicious. We had starters and then shared the three curry platter for mains it was more than enough food and we actually took some home. The rendang curry and rotis were a highlight. Also, big shout out for a fantastic non alcoholic drinks menu that had so much choice. Usually as someone who doesn’t drink there is only an option of cola but this had a wide selection of soft Malaysian drinks, non alcoholic mock tails, wines and spirits. It was such a treat! Fab food and this was an extra bonus! Will definitely be returning

We visited this restaurant due to it having vegan options on many of the mains. The service was wonderful, staff helpful and friendly, and food arrived quickly. The menu is labelled with a 🌶️ to denote how hot a dish is. I chose a noodle dish with no symbol, but it was still quite hot for me, however, the flavour was very nice. I had the banana fritters afterwards, which were totally amazing, light and crispy. Planning to go again very soon.

Not my taste. Roti was all right, but chicken in the curry seemed like cheap cuts 😕 Noodles were too rich with dark soy sauce or something, it was overpowering. Salad is unseasoned. The soup vegetables were mostly onion. The seafood tasted frozen to be honest 🤨. The “tomyam” tasted okay, just simple. All very so-so for me and so not worth the price tag. No skewers on the weekend, quite bad not to have a popular item you easily stock. Can you put pictures on the menu. Few will know what Malaysian dishes look like, it makes deciding take longer.

1st visit to Norwich and stumbled upon this by accident. Loved the entrance with memories of Malaysia. The decor is very authentic right down to the type of picture in the toilet. As it was unintended we chose a quick set lunch spring rolls and nasi lemak and some roti canal. The set lunch is quite reasonable £12.99 for a small starter main and a drink. The food arrived along with a tea tarik. Spring rolls were fine nothing to get excited about. The nasi lemak was well received by the wife. Very impressed with the tumeric fried chicken. Roti was fluffy and a spicy chicken curry. It has a better feel then some Malaysian restaurants which pay little attention to decor just felt more welcoming. Shame one in leeds closed down sometime ago. Well worth checking out.

I do not know why people have written such a bad review here. As my experience was not bad. One review that confused me was the one that said the staff were friendly, and the food was great but because of the lack of hospitality, and no manager around it doesn’t come to your expectations you give them 2 or 3 stars. (I can’t remember which star was it). That is not fair to them I think. It is like most of you here, your expectations here is to expect them to be 5-star restaurants. Are they? I didn’t realize if they were supposed to be one. As for my personal opinion, when I go for a standard restaurant, as long as the food is great, the staff is friendly, the place is clean then it ticks all of my boxes. But maybe that is just me? I could be just easy to please? 😅 For the owner, here is my honest review. Your place has potential but please do improve in a few areas as I want to see you succeed! 1. I do agree the waiter seems to be a little bit inexperienced. In my experience, for a short moment, he seems confused about what ayam goreng is. That’s when I knew he was not Malaysian. As any Malaysian would know what ayam is 😅 He seem young so does not seem confident. But that’s ok, he is polite and friendly, give them a chance to grow. I do agree with some comments here tho, a waiter needs to be knowledgeable of the food so they can explain to customers when being asked. 2. Food-wise, I only tried rendang, lemang, roti canai, nasi lemak, karipap, and bubur pulut hitam. I think the food is great because I have come with an open mind to not have high expectations as there is no way you will get an authentic taste as you are in Malaysia. But as a Malay myself, and my English husband who has tasted many rendang before, the rendang does not taste like rendang? so I do not know how to feel about the rendang and the nasi lemak taste a bit dry and cold. But other than that, I found the food was better than I would expected! My husband love the karipap, very well done and I find the roti canai seems to be fluffy and crispy. And my ayam rempah did tasted like home! 3.But here the not so positive review, what I found not ok is the toilet bin is full. I have worked in hospitality, and other than food, I always feel cleaniness is very important. The restaurant does not seem busy, and there is no excuse for the toilet bin to be full until tissues are filled to the top. That was just not a nice sight to see when you stepped into the toilet. When your front does not seems clean, people will wonder about what is happening at the back too. I will come again to try more food and I rates you 5 stars as I do think you have potential to be great!do not be discouraged by the negative review here. Keep on improving please 🙏🏼

The food here is truly delicious and we will come back again for this amazing Malaysian cuisine. The Vegan options are AMAZING and we struggled to choose because everything sounded so good. However, the service was lacking. I think maybe the restaurant was understaffed when we visited; as we waited 20 minutes before we got a drink and my food arrived 10 minutes before my partner's food both with the starters and the mains, meaning mine was cold by the time his arrived. The staff were very pleasant and they apologised strongly for the long wait we had. As I said, we will come back for the food and just hope the wait isn't as long next time 🙂

Visited @ 5.30 on. Friday with family. Whilst the food was good it was an exercise in the importance of a management presence in hospitality. The staff were pleasant and friendly but clearly inexperienced and untrained and no sign of an experienced manager in sight : leaving what should have been a simple meal out into a frustrating and overly long exercise which detracted from the food and ensured we’d be unlikely to re visit . MyMakan - it’s the whole experience and not just the food upon which you’ll be judged and ultimately succeed….. or fail . Disappointed.

The menu looked lovely (we’re vegetarian) so I took my daughter here for a celebratory meal. It was fairly empty when we arrived at 5.30 (maybe 2-3 tables of people) but after nearly 15 minutes no-one had come over to the table to see if we even wanted a drink. The front desk person was just there, on their phone. We felt ignored, so we left. Don’t know what the food is like, but the service leaves a lot to be desired.

Really surprised to see some low reviews on here so sharing my experience. I love Malay food and spent about a month in Malaysia where the food is absolutely on another level. I was delighted a Malay opened locally and had both good service and good food on the first visit including a pleasant Rendang and some very nice Roti Canai. The chef came out to check we'd enjoyed everything when it got quieter. Big portions, hearty food, great sambal. Maybe some teething problems account for some of the lower reviews, but I hope this place continues to do well. Don't let them put you off.

First time trying Malaysian food in Norwich and I am very pleased. The location and the whole ambiance of the restaurant is remarkable. After ordering my food, I only had to wait for another 10mins or so for the food to arrive. The Nasi Lemak was 9/10 for me only because I wised the rendang had a bit more flavour to it.I dont know if there was not enough salt or something for me.However the sambal tho was authentic tasting and reminded me of the ones I use to have in Singapore, I literally love it. The Pengat Pisang I highly recommend everyone to try it, it has got the perfect amount of sweetness 10/10 for me. I also met the owner / chief in the restaurant who was so friendly and welcoming. He took his time to explain to me/us about his menu.He even let us try a Malaysian cake (6th pic) that he was trying to make and is not yet in the menu. The cake omg was 10/10 it literally melted in my mouth. Now I’m just counting down the days until the cake is placed in the menu. The only downfall, I wished the food was a bit more spicy.I guess my fault as I should have told the waitress to let the chief know that I want the food to be spicy. Additionally the food was splendid and portion was huge hence making it worth the money. All in all, everyone in Norwich should go and try MyMakan,it will definitely satisfy your Malaysian food craving.

Sadly, we visited my makan this weekend for dinner & received terrible service from the chefs. My partner does not eat egg and we specified this with the waitress - she reassured us this would not be in the dish. He also ordered a starter too. The noodle dish was served to us with lots of egg in it & in regards to the starter, we just didn’t get given it. We passed the the dish back to the kitchen as my partner can’t eat egg & questioned why we didn’t get the starter. Very reluctantly, we were given the noodle dish without egg ( the waitress advised us that the kitchen was close to refusing to make this again for us, even though they admitted that cooking it with egg was a fault of their own ) and upon the waitress requesting the kitchen to make the starter they forgot to give us, she advised us that the chefs said “the kitchen are being stubborn and refuse to make this for you” No resolution was given to us at all. So my partner had to take it upon himself to explain how it made him feel & asked if anything could be done to make up for their multiple mistakes. All they could do was give us some prawn crackers & remove the drinks. This would not have been done unless we asked, which is quite embarrassing for us. What was meant to be a lovely meal, ended up with us leaving feeling uncomfortable, confused and above all…hungry! Unless the chefs make some changes, I will not recommend this place to anyone sadly. What a shame!

Having eaten here before and really enjoyed this restaurant, I took my husband here and can only say it was disappointing. Our waiter lacked knowledge and managed to order an incorrect starter for me. I ordered a Keropok Lekor. It arrived 3-4 mins after my husband’s starter and was not what I expected. I asked where the dipping sauce was to be told there wasn’t one with this, but they could get me one if I wanted, to which I declined. I mentioned to the waiter it didn’t taste like fish and he responded maybe it was because it was deep fried. What they actually served me was Karipap. Karipap is like a mini pasty with spicy potatoes and whilst nice it was not the fish dish I ordered. Whilst still eating our starters our mains arrived!! The mains were what we ordered and were tasty. The wine is quite simply disgusting. Still waiting for the tap water we ordered. Not very awesome overall and just left with a disappointed feeling.

Chicken Satay lunch. Chicken skewers looked and tasted like compressed chicken and they were dripping in oil as though they had been deep fried. Rice cubes were cold and tasted disgusting. And we were not sure quite want to do with the few chunks of cucumber and raw onion on the side! The only good thing was the satay sauce, so it masked the taste of the “chicken”. When we paid and told the waitress that it was not very nice and expensive for what we got, she said “I wouldn’t know, I’ve never had it! Service was questionable as I booked a table in advance where there's an option for a window table. But we were given a tiny table in the middle while new people coming in without booking were given a larger table by the window. I don't know how their brains work, or not work in this case! We visited MyMakan in the opening weeks for dinner. We would rate it 4 out of 5, though the service at that time was a little overwhelming with too many servers coming to check out if we were okay, overservice. However we were very disappointed with our lunch experience on 28 September 23. Roti Canai served with Dhal Curry (1 out of 5) We ordered this dish before, and it was very good, served with a small bowl of very well-spiced thick dhal. We ordered it again yesterday. To our dismay, it was served with tiny chunks of potato in some generic curry. It was no dhal at all. We complained that to the nice waitress, but she had no idea what lentil was. She is a good server, but lacks the knowledge of the dishes. 2) Lunch set menu (Vegan) (1 out of 5) We ordered a vegetarian/vegan set menu with salt and pepper tofu. Salt and pepper tofu was the only decent dish we had. The rice was very dry and not moist at all. It tasted like reheated leftover rice. It was served with some kind of absolutely tasteless and flavourless cakes. We couldn’t swallow them, even with the sauce. We only had a few spoonfuls each of the main course and decided to leave the restaurant. We couldn’t even bother to take photos of our leftover. We would expect a prison meal to be better.

Ordered the two set meals in a separate menu: Chicken curry with fried spring rolls and Nasi lemak with fried tofu. My crave for nasi lemak had equipped me with very strict request for the taste - the rice must be aromatic with a hint of coconut milk and the sambal must be sweetly spicy. The nasi lemak here although is not up to my “standard”, mainly due to the coconut milk did not mix well with the basmati rice and the sambal lack of onion and ikan bilis, but still considered a tasty one. In the other hand, the chicken curry is good. The tofu and the fried spring rolls are good too. The another main of Mee Goreng (fried noodle) is nice but slightly sweet. The wok smell made it tastier. If a sunny-side-up was topped on both nasi lemak and mee goreng would add more plus points 😃. Feeling blessed that can have a home meal even 10 thousands km away from home. Oh ya, the fried thin tempeh was superb!

For somewhere that is trying hard to promote a vegan offer, they did not know what the meat substitutes were made of - all seitan for reference ( no GF alternatives). The food took longer to arrive than it should of and one dish had to be returned as it was cold. Overall I’m being generous giving this three stars - as I say it could improve a lot and become successful. It’s a good idea, in a good location with a nice vibe.

We went around 1ish on a Saturday so it was a bit busy. The restaurant is nice inside and the staff were polite but the food took over an hour to get to us with very little communication. I had to ask a few times if it was on the way, when we finally got our food my beef curry was cold, watery and lacked flavor which was very disappointing. At that point I couldn't be bothered to complain so just ate and left which is a shame, as standard they even add a service charge. I love Malaysian food and maybe I ordered the wrong thing but still doesn't excuse the wait time and cold food. My girlfriend was the one that suggested this restaurant actually likes the food but I don't think we will come back (well me anyway). Id suggest if food is expected to take that long maybe offer a complimentary snack or at least ensure that the food is hot.

Where to start with this place… I guess from the moment I walked through the door on a summer’s Sunday lunchtime with a gaggle of friends. The restaurant was about half full and the servers attended to the usual admin of taking our drinks and food orders. Being a non-Malaysian, I was stumped by what to order, and had to visualise what each meal was from the description. What you receive rarely matches up with what’s in your mind, but this time the chicken rendang roughly met with my mental image. However, what I didn’t picture was the raw chicken that became apparent to me after at least one chuck of meat had entered my stomach. I highlighted this to the tall, dark-haired waiter (who, I should add, was brilliant throughout the whole debacle) and he apologised and gave me a second plate of food for free. What I did not expect was for this new meal to be completely different to my original order. It seemed odd that they didn’t just give me a new chicken rendang, but maybe, like me, the chefs thought it better to steer clear of chicken for the foreseeable. They also gave two of my dining companions a different meat substitute to the one they had ordered, but that did later appear as a side dish. After all that the possibility of dessert wasn’t even discussed, so I can’t comment on the sweet options. Overall, MyMakan is a place I probably won’t be going back to, but I left feeling happy enough to leave a tip.

Waitress service was terrible, bordering on the absurd and arrogant, having served two meals to wrong people, after having been asked to confirm the meal presented, which resulted in a delayed service for one of our party and then she refused to take off the service charge, telling us it was on the menu [small print, of a 'discretionary optional service charge'] which the last time I checked meant I had the option Following up on the offer of a refund everytime I have been back over last 2+ weeks the doors are always locked and restaurant in darkness (despite apparently being open) Another reason for one star review

I was surprised about this restaurant for good. The environment, decoration was spotted on. The food was really good and I enjoyed it a lot. However, food menu was confusing. Mains indicate you can choose sides, which are rice, but they charge an upgrade which is not reflected or clear in my opinion. I also asked for a dish which clearly indicate in its section to choose white rice or lemong, but for some reason I was charged for upgrade as well (I still don't understand why). There was a bit more confusion about this rice/sides topic, which we asked the waitress, explained twice, and we didn't understand as it was in the section where indicates to choose sides, which we thought were included in the price. I would also say it should indicate which dishes are also hot, as it is said on the description, but we missed or not very clear again. Service would need to improve. This is the biggest downside. We had to be after the waitress to ask for more drinks, as no one came to see if food was ok, or look at us if we wanted to ask for more things, like this drinks. In my opinion service was not good. After ordering food, I said waitress if it was 4 mains and 2 starters as I thought she was a bit confused, she replied yes, but they came with 5 mains, where 1 was not served, however this was reflected on the bill. Food was not also served at the same time, not much problem with mains, but you could notice the difference from first main to last. This was more remarkable on the desserts, where one came from the pub, the other 3 from the kitchen. After a long time, first dessert was served, we asked to another waiter for the 3 remaining desserts and the waiter said the kitchen was closed already, no double check for our order, while explaining this was asked at the same time, The waitress came with desserts, excuse herself and no problems, however that was an excuse for a problem they have. Bill also reflects service charge, which we paid, but in my opinion we shouldn't as this service review. It is a bit embarrassing to ask to take it out, and my friends didn't want to feel that. To summarize, it is nice to see restaurants like this, but it still needs a bit more improvement, as this is quite new in the city

We ordered 4 starters, 4 mains, dessert and drinks came out to be £30+ each. Mains came with rice, tasted absolutely amazing, full of flavour and spices. Wow! My only negative is that I didn't expect it to be so hot, would be nice to have a chillies warning on the menu!! Definitely going again.

We've been twice to MyMakan and it's such a great addition to Norwich. Exactly what we were missing. The food is lovely, the Curry Ayam and Beef Rendang is sooooo good. As someone who grew up in Indonesia, I've so very much missed having a place to go that had the flavours of home. MyMakan is this place for me ❤️

We've been excited about visiting MyMakan for a few weeks after seeing all the vegan options on their menu and tonight was the night. ....From the moment we walked in I knew i wouldnt be dissapointed... welcoming staff, space to relax and time to choose... we ordered a starter of tofu, potato and a peanut sauce, meatless chicken rendang and a salad with oyster sauce for main. Each dish was disctinct, each bit full of flavour and texture, the rendang sauce in particular was a delight. We ordered Vegan ABC for dessert, a bowl of shaved ice, coconut, tapioca, fruit and ice cream which although filling was just the thing after a hot day . In short, go, try a bunch of dishes, you wont be dissapointed.

I have a strong longing for Malaysian cuisine and I am delighted to have access to it within a smaller locality like Norwich, where a diverse range of Asian food options are readily available. While there are certainly both successful and unsuccessful dishes, I would assert that, on the whole, the food, service, and ambiance are highly commendable for individuals seeking an enjoyable dining experience.
