The food is authentic. We ordered the beer duck, hot & sour noodle, 2 different vegetables and all were very good. The duck dish was done well as it is not often one can get this dish. The service was good too. The waiters was accommodating with our requests and the restaurant is clean. I like the fact that they didnt cramp many tables in the dining area and although the restaurant was busy that night, we didnt feel suffocated. We truly enjoy our dining in this restaurant.

Used to be a favourite restaurant but this time could not get served, waiter did not speak any English, the table and cutlery were dirty, as was the restaurant, it was total chaos with people running everywhere and people who arrived after us got served, while we had not seen a menu. We left without ordering and went somewhere else. A great pity

As on previous visits the breadth of menu , the good quality of the food , the ambience , continues have a genuine Chinese feel about it. However the serving staff were only occasionally attentive and on 2 occasions we had to go and find them only to see them chatting amongst themselves. We enjoyed all the dishes with good portion sizes with some very adventurous options . Pricing felt a bit high

Near the bus station we chose it as a central place and also because I'd been there twice with a Chinese friend who had done all the ordering. The menu has been made user friendly for non-Chinese clients. The heat indicator seems accurate! The waiters were also helpful. We were extremely pleased with our selection which included two dishes with Szechuan pepper which numbers your mouth.. .

Worst customer service ever in my whole life. Arrived at 6pm, left at 7:30 without getting the complete order. 1 main came and was slat down on the table, then a side dish of noodles arrived 20 mins later, followed by prawns & egg fried rice about 15 mins after that. 1 dish never arrived and in the end we just gave up and paid the £46 for what took 1 & 1/2 hours to arrive. Delivery meals were flying out of the kitchen at speed. Not so with ours. Shame, as we were visiting Oxford for a family meet up and wanted a nice treat but left dissapointed.

I went with my Chinese flatmate again as the first time I really enjoyed their food. We order the pork ribs and the taste was really weird. My flatmate tried them and advised the meat was rotten. We tried to talk with the waitress about it but she started to be very rude and when bringing the bill asked us to pay for the service. We refused and the lady who was managing today started to scream in Chinese. It was just unbelievable. I've never seen something like that happening, I'll definitely not go back to that place again.

It was my birthday and me and my friend wanted to go Chinese Hotpot. I then searched this restaurant through Google. We arrived at 9:15pm, the young lady(who is polite and kind) told us they are closing at 10pm so that can't do hotpot but only a la carte order. We understand and we were seated and ordered. It took around 15-20 mins for food arrival, we then kept eating without any pause or chatting. Then suddenly another girl came to our table and said" I will pack your food to boxes, we are closing now.", then show her iPhone point to my face indicate it's 10:00pm. We were totally shocked and explained we haven't finished. Then she keep saying with a black face "We are closing". How could they expect we finished all tables of food within 20 mins? Finally the boss came and give us 10 more mins to finish it, and help us to pack the unfinished food. I was totally pissed How could that staff point her phone (the clock) to my face and ask us to leave without any reminder before.

Me dejé media. When this place first opened a few years ago (perhaps around 2010?), it was refreshing to have an outlet that provided an almost authentic Sichuan Cuisine. Over the years, something must have changed in its business model. In seven years, prices have jumped up by thirty percent while the portion size has shrunken to about a third of what it once was. They are clearly no longer interested in return costumers , preferring instead to cater to one off mainland Chinese visitors who either presume the UK is expensive anyway or can probably claim all their catering costs back.

Also, it was obvious that the restaurant is frequented by Chinese and Asian clientele, endorsing just how authentic the food is (I have also been to China several times). As someone who has spent a good deal of time in Beijing (where Sichuan cuisine is quite popular), and some time in Chongqing and Chengdu, I was delighted to find such authentic and satisfying Sichuanese food right beside Oxford's main coach station, near Gloucester Green. The restaurant is located in a building named the "Old School," but the staff has done a nice job of transforming it into a comfortable Chinese-style restaurant. The food is quite authentic Sichuanese cooking, and, while not inexpensive, is probably the best Chinese restaurant in Oxford. The lunch menu has some affordable options, but it can be quite expensive for dinner. I enjoy it for special dinners out a few times a year.

Well I wouldn't quite classify this as my preferred choice - mind you I have eaten in mouth watering sichuan restaurants in London, Cambridge, Southampton, Shanghai, Chengdu (well that is no comparison to these of course) and other places. This restaurant has non-existence service. The service they provide is the very bare minimum: one needs to keep asking them repeatedly and even then they forget. The ambience is the only plus aspect of this restaurant. As for foor - well the taste is so average, that I prefer to buy the sauces from the Chinese supermarket not far from there, and cook it myself - and I am not even Chinese! The dishes are reasonably authentic (considering this is UK), though flavour is lacking. Despite the average place, I think I will once again be dragged there, as it is large enough to meet friends.

I visited My Sichuan with my wife, Sam, on a Monday night. It was pretty quiet except for a large group in another room.We ordered the mixed starter to share. I ordered the Beancurd with Sauce for my main course and Sam asked for Fried Sweetcorn. Our waitress told her that was unavailable so Sam asked her to suggest a similar alternative. She suggested a couple of dishes and from that Sam selected Mushroom with Coriander. We ordered a boiled rice to share. The starter selection was ok, the spare ribs were rather dry but nothing really bad. My main course arrived and was fine but to Sam’s horror her mushroom dish was stone cold. We called the waitress over to explain the problem and she claimed she had told us it was a cold dish. This was definitely untrue and in any event Sam certainly wouldn’t have ordered a cold meal for her main course. Our waitress insisted she did and simply walked off leaving us with it. We had to share my Beancurd and as Sam isn’t keen on it she just had the sauce. We finished the meal and a good five minutes later a person brought over the boiled rice which we refused. We then waited and waited and waited… Although the room was practically empty our waitress was clearly not going to come over to our table again so we asked a person cleaning a table nearby for the bill. He brought it over and we noticed that although the rice was crossed out the mushroom was still on there and to add insult to injury they added a 10% service charge! I started to explain the problem but sadly the chap’s English was rather poor so we ended up just paying the bill and leaving. I reckon that was right up there with being the worst service we’ve ever had in the 20 odd years in Oxford.

First time I have been to this place although I have been meaning to go here for years. The menu was very varied to say the least. Lots of the usual staple Chinese food such as aromatic duck, fried rice, sesame toast and so on. Then lots of really unusual stuff like pigs ears, lungs, beef tripe - nice! With pictures to go with them as well. The only thing missing was the scratch and sniff stickers to give you an idea of the flavour.Speaking of flavours and smells, the door to the kitchen was permanently open so you were blessed with the aroma of whatever pork part was being fried up with chillies throughout the meal. And if it wasn't that cuisine smells, it was the smokers standing right on the door step - no, sorry, move on somewhere else. Now I've finally been here, I'm not planning a fast return but it it's credit, the food was good but service was so fast! Love the sichuan food there, is quite authentic, especially in Oxford, you can't find any better. As a HongKonger and a cook, I know how to tell if the Chinese food is good! Many Chinese people dine in the restaurant, astomphere is good. If you are westerners, you may find the food too spicy , but Sichuan food supposed to be spicy and make your mouth numb. Love the spicy beef in spicy sauce, sour and spicy soup and the green beans dish are my favourite. The price is not bad, so much worth the money compared to Chinese takeaway. Saw some westerners dine there and have their own dishes and end up order too much. Chinese food is about sharing, so if you go with a friend, order one starter, one main dish and maybe vegetable dish plus rice. It is already enough, the portion is big there and every time I have to pack the leftover for next day lunch. They also have hot pot, like 22 pounds for all you can eat. Good experience to try the Chinese hotpot. Surprised they have nice shrimps and many choices of food. The staff are very friendly and attentive. highly recommend!

We came here for an evening hot pot which involves a wide variety of raw food (vegetables, meat and seafood) being brought to the table and being self-cooked in the shared pot at its centre which has both spicy and non-spicy halves. Any particular item can be asked for as many times as needed so don't worry to run out of your favourite one. Sauces are also available at any time. I'd recommend trying the chilli-spiced half of the pot, but be careful, that's Sichuan spicy!

I enjoyed my first visit here 2 evenings ago. I had been quite impressed to find "My Sichuan" featuring in the Food Food Guide 2016 with a GFG "cooking score" of 3, so I was curious to find what made this place tick. The Old School building makes for an imposing setting and the decor is pleasant. The service was pretty good, too, and friendly. The clientele seemed reassuringly Asian/Chinese from looking around us...Both my partner and I enjoyed both our starters and our main courses - yes they were pretty spicy, which is a bit of a given here, I guess, in Sichuan cuisine and having read other reviews, but the cuisine was NOT at all "over-the-top" too hot. However, three of our four dishes were very, very oily and rather over salted, too - in fact they were swimming in cooking oils - i.e. the minced dumpling starter, the spicy pork and veg emincé and whole grilled fish dish. The spicy flavours were generally good and enjoyable but the quantity of floating oil was rather off-putting.

However you cant go wrong with twice cooked pork, fried green beans, most prawn dishes and many more that would take too long in a review. My favourite is house speciality crab. There are non spicy things on the menu too BTW. I visit this place at least every 6-8 weeks and it just never disappoints me. Waiters have limited English or difficult to understand but it adds to the ambience. You will mostly see Chinese eating here and that is always a good sign in a Chinese restaurant. It never seems to be closed. Finally the bigger the group, the more rewarding the eating experience as you can try many many things. Be adventurous, you only live once.

Not your usual westernised Chinese restaurant! Indeed, rare are the non-Chinese diners.Dinner is served quite early - indeed from around 21.30 they start shutting down ready to sit down to their own meals. The menu is exotic and the food is delicious: cumin lamb, dry-fried pigs' intestines, twice-cooked pork, sliced pork lavishly (they are not exaggerating!) topped with chilli and pepper are favourites of mine.

The best things about the restaurant are the location and the building -- it has a nice ambiance. However, on my visit the service was very slow, and they brought the food with the wrong timings. In addition, the food was too greasy and oily. For example, the aubergines seemed stale. I could not distinguish them from sponges soaked in oil of some mysterious kind. I think I will not visit a second time.

When we arrived for lunch at 1.10 pm on a Thursday the restaurant was busy with tables of Chinese people - always a good recomendation. This is not standard Chinese food as served in most English Chinese restaurants but much more the sort of food served in Sichuan province in China; spicy with dishes that local people enjoy. The menu is long but well illustrated. We were not prepared for the large portions of each dish which made prices seem good value.Looking around the other tables afterwards, I am not sure we made the best selection, although we loved the speciality dish that we chose. We will certainly go back to sample more of the menu. The building itself is remarkable with a large stained glass dome and beautiful marble fireplace in the main room. The decor is more Chinese style eating place than a cosy restaurant. In the room we chose there were large groups of people enjoying meals together.

Maybe we came with too high expectations. The restaurant advertise itself as the marvel from Sichuan. We love Sichuan food and now it is becoming available in even smaller towns. The food here was very average, it was greasy and we wondered how freshly made it was. My partner said she could have done a better job.

In Oxford, this place remains as my favorite Sichuan restaurant. They use the right spices to bring out the authentic flavor. The place is OK, not much ambiance. Service is acceptable. What I really do object is that they charge a service fee on corkage. To me, corkage is already a service fee, so charging service on service is just greedy!

A good test of any restaurant is whether people from the country whose food is supposedly being served actually go there. On that basis, My Sichuan has to be one of the best restaurants in the UK - it's certainly the best in Oxford. The fact it's the first stop for anyone Chinese coming off the buses from Heathrow is a guarantee that this is going to be good, and it always is.

It was all very authentic - food not toned down for British tastes (but the warnings were there), lots of Chinese students tucking in, authentically off-hand service. But all very tasty if you can stand the chili. I'd go again - it's hard to find anything as good. Big helpings arrived quickly.

Doctoring the bill. The dinner bill added up to about 48 and the service lady sent me a bill of 55 at the bottom. When I asked how did that added up, she said there is a 10% service charge that had not been included. Then I asked for the correct billing, she stamped a 10% service charge chop and keep the 55. But the correct bill would added up to 53.34, when I asked why she wouldn't give me a correct bill. She refused to apologize and said that it's such a small additional amount that I don't need to pay if I don't agree. What the heck!! She made me sounded like a nitpicking customer while she doctored the bill.

Mid week evening with a group of friends and I have to say it was very good. Most of the other people in the restaurant were Asian which usually means the food has some authenticity when you go to an Asian restaurant. This lived up to expectation with some very tasty, spicy food. I will certainly be going back. Never been to Sichuan but have eaten Sichuan food in Shanghai & Hangzhou. This was as close as I have come in the UK to those.

Very tasty, authentic Sichuan style food, as confirmed by my Sichuan friend I was dining with! Food was very hot and spicy, not recommended for those with tender chilli-averse palates.

We had seen reviews praising this restaurant and were expecting excellent Szechuan food. The place was nearly empty when we arrived. We were shown to a table that smelt strongly of chemical spray and was still wet from the spray. Apart from a fried broccoli with garlic dish, the food was unexciting - and the broccoli was overpriced at seven pounds eighty. One dish we had ordered was chicken - a beef dish was delivered so thank goodness we were not Hindus! We sent it back. The service was poor which made it all the more galling to find that, in small print, the restaaurant adds 10% for "service".

I have lived in Oxford for 6 years now and this is the only restaurant that cheekily adds 10% to the total bill without stating so. A person who does not notice this may end up paying additional tip. Most restaurants in Oxford either do not add service charge to the bill or state explicitly on the bill. I find this very dishonest!

I went in a group of five on a Saturday night. The food was incredible - a really diverse menu served in very generous portions at modest prices. A friendly team of staff and a vibrant atmosphere rounded off the experience. There's not much else to say, other than I'll definitely be going back!

I did not enjoy my visit. The menu was impossible to understand, the waitresses did not seem to know what food they were serving and were lacking English anyway. The dishes were strange sizes, some of them too big and others quite tiny for the price. My food was too spicy and too greasy. Not enjoyable. I won't be rushing back any time soon. Maybe this place is only suitable for Chinese people that actually know what to order without any help from the staff.

Not usually one for revisiting old reviews but this place has gone properly downhill. After many visits we finally stopped coming just under a year ago as food did not have the quality of the early years. Having read Jay Rayner's more recent Guardian review we decided to try it out one more time but this turned out to be a most disappointing visit. Having reserved a table for 4 we were placed in a room with an ongoing stag do and deafening disco music. Of the main dishes we ordered, only the deep fried squid with chili was nice; however, they have effectively halved the portion size since we last visited in September 2014. Roast duck was cold and consisted of skin and bone and very little else. Lamb ribs (at £12.80) turned out to be 6 fried bits of lamb belly fat - not a rib in site - and this was also cold and congealed. We complained and wanted to send it back as it was grim but the waitress, seemingly unable to grasp what we were saying, merely reheated it for us. We also ordered pork with shredded cucumber tofu pancakes and this had been a delicately flavoured delectable dish on previous visits but what we got this time around just tasted bland and wrong. Three portions of steamed rice were bland, dry and tepid, with the grey dry crust indicating that after a long stay at the bottom of the rice steamer these were the truly last bits which were scraped together and sold to us at full price.Sad loss to the culinary scene in Oxford but in its present incarnation this once great restaurant is an affront to all senses.

We made reservations for a Saturday evening. The service was not good at all, it took them more than 20 minutes to bring our drinks. We ordered a complete menu (banquet) with soup, starters, main course served with rice and vegetables. Although the food was good, we had moments when we felt like they forgot about us.

We went as a family, with high expectations. I had had a good experience a year ago when I went with a large party for a birthday. But today we found almost everything wrong. The cutlery was dirty, and the paper napkins greasy (clearly recycled from a previous customer). The men's toilets had no seats and stank. We were served a bottled iced tea which was a month out of date.We ordered the "banquet" supposedly costing just under £20 each (but as we were rudely told when we queried the bill at the end, there is a compulsory 10% service charge - it took two of us to find the tiny writing stating this, when we later looked for it).My "crab and sweetcorn" soup was actually made from cheap fish sticks and was lukewarm and glutinous. The mixed starters were OK. But the waiter, in clearing the soup bowls, spilt the (horribly over spicy beef soup) over themMy main meal of chilly chicken was so excessively spicy my mouth went alarmingly numb in a way I have never before experienced, and I actually thought I was going to have a seizure. The one plate of vegetables (I forget what it was) was nicely cooked. At one point the chef came out and yelled across the restaurant at a waitress. When we queried why the bill was so high (because of the hidden service charge) the managing waiter was offhand and only reluctantly removed it when we protested. She seemed unconcerned that we said the food was poor and when we pointed out the bad service we had had. It's a lovely building. Hopefully they will return themselves to their former reputation, if not let's hope someone else moves in. A really Chinese is Zheng in Walton St - we went there last week and had great food for the same price that we paid at this outfit - difficult to get a booking.

Came here on the recommendation of a friend and we were really disappointed. First all the place was extremely hot and stuffy. Secondly the service was poor. A young man found it difficult to understand a simple request which is absolutely fine, because his English was limited, but the woman he called in to help was really quite unfriendly. The atmosphere did not feel like somewhere we were particularly welcome. The food was OK at bestm unfortunately. Some of us were happier than others but overall this was really quite poor and we won't be going back.

I have been here several times because I LOVE the food. I agree with other reviews that service is average and that the bill is misleading (they have already added service charge so don't give any extra unless you want to deliberately!). Try the cold green noodle dish, Chongqing chili chicken and frogs legs...delicious!

I visited this restaurant for a dinner with a group of 11 friends. The menu includes mainly spicy food but there are also enough non-spicy options to make it suitable for everyone. Food was tasty and everyone at my table was pleased, I suggest to visit in group and eat "chinese style" (everyone shares)

We booked the large karaoke room for twenty people and were told we would have to spend a minimum of £360 (food and drinks) which seemed very reasonable. We ended up with 28 people, in the same room, and were told the minimum would now be £600. Not very proportional to the original quote but we agreed that for just over £20 per person this was OK. Towards the end of the night we were then told that there would be an additional service charge which wasn't mentioned at any point before. We argued the point and agreed that if everyone paid cash then the service charge would be waived. At 10:30pm they asked us to leave, or pay another £30 to stay longer. Our bill reached £540 so they effectively got a very good service charge anyway.Very disappointing customer service considering we were a well behaved group of academics having a great send-off for a much loved colleague.

My advice is to decide what type of Chinese food you like before deciding to visit. If you like mainstream Cantonese this may not be the place for you. I had lunch on a Saturday so not too busy and service was good contrary to other reviews. I was needing something a bit different from normal bland stuff and wasn't disappointed. The shredded chicken salad was generous and delicious, the lamb ribs with cumin & chilli were good. I spotted a few things to try next time.
