We were looking for a nice restaurant in Cowes for lunch on Saturday and found this one through TA. We had the most delicious meal served by the two sons (owners). They told us the restaurant has been in the family for over 30 years and you can tell this is an owner-run restaurant. They put such care into everything. Will definitely visit again.

Wednesday evening in September and it’s full of people living their seafood. Finding it hard to pick any one thing as it’s all fab. Seafood linguine, white bait, crab pate. Add service with a smile and lovely crisp chilled Alburino and easy access central Cowes location and hard to beat.

Lovely experience at this restaurant - the food was delicious - I had crab pate & then prawn & smoked salmon linguini off the 2 course menu. Great choices for children also & well portioned. Although one of my children didn’t like the tomato soup (nothing to do with the soup he is very picky!) he loved tucking into his mamas white bait starter! The wine was also brilliant & staff friendly! We will return if we come back to the isle of white Thank you.

A group of 10-12 of us come to Cowes for the regatta. Murrays is the constant in our 20yrs or so trips here. We have 3 days on the island and visit 2+ other restaurants on our visit, but Murrays is the only place we book for the next year, when we leave. The welcome is comforting. The place is tranquil, and the highlight of our trip. The wine list is not extensive, but there is quality at a reasonable price - we are never wanting. That is a POSITIVE, not a criticism. Unlike some establishments on the island, they have great quality seafood at a good price. And cooked to perfection There are a number of places where we have been that you feel you have been fleeced. Murrays is our constant. They are our measure. No one comes near to them!

A picturesque venue on Cowes High Street, run by a dedicated family. The crab pate and smoked mackerel starters were divine, followed by haddock and the smoked salmon linguine. Excellent wine and faultless elegant service made this an evening to savour.

Hidden gem in Cowes High Street. It’s a cosy, family-run restaurant with great food and warm, friendly service. Price is reasonable considering the high quality of the food. We had haddock filets in prawn and lobster sauce with new potatoes and mixed veg. All cooked to perfection. Highly recommended if you can get a table.

I first visited this little fish restaurant about 35 years ago treated to dinner by a client visiting the Island. I recall enquiring whether the Dover sole on the menu was fresh or frozen and was assured it was the former but when it was presented and tasted could swear that the fish had en route to my plate had been frozen at some point. (Anyone who has been fortunate to eat fresh fish will know that there’s a milkiness in the flakes of grilled fish which sadly is absent on freezing.) Of course I didn’t challenge the waiter and we finished a perfectly acceptable fish supper washed down with an expensive bottle of Chablis but had not ventured back to the establishment until last Thursday when taking up an attractive discount offer via “The Price is Wight” offered through Wightcable late last year. (From £24.95 to c£9 for 2 courses plus drinks extra). Firstly the restaurant hasn’t changed its plain decor or intimate feel over the decades and the two young waiters (the grandsons of the owner) were efficient and helpful. There was no “fresh fish catch -of-the day” blackboard surprisingly. Choosing a main and sweet, my partner ordered the house fish pie and I chose the grilled coley - otherwise pollack - which I am aware is a member of the cod family. (I remember catching large pollack out of Fowey around the Eddystone lighthouse off Plymouth using rod and line in the 50s - which were destined for local fish and chip shops). Fish restaurants then didn’t offer pollack though this has changed and I was keen to find out what could be achieved by a good chef. My fillet came with a curry sauce and a few mussels in their shells. My partner enjoyed her fish pie commenting on the dish being very hot and generous with its chunks of salmon, white fish prawns and a pleasant fishy flavour of the white sauce. My pollack - though perfectly grilled - was a tad disappointing though no fault of the chef.. The flesh is similar in texture to its cod brother-species but is rather greyish and has a rather anonymous or bland flavour though assisted by the curry sauce. The side dishes of boiled green beans, carrots, swede (the last slightly undercooked) were welcome as were the boiled small new potatoes. The sweets arrived well presented (see photo). My partner’s vanilla cheesecake with cherry compote was delightful and my chocolate brownie with salted caramel ice cream was delicious. Summarising, we enjoyed our fish lunch - especially at the price but until the restaurant embraces the fresh fish concept adopted by other venues on the island, we are unlikely to return.

I do not know if it was an off night for this restaurant but the mussels came out and smelled terrible..like sewage water. I set them back and the waiter graciously replaced them with the haddock which was good. The restaurant is charming just a bad experience this evening. I have eaten mussels in many restaurants around the world and none ever smelled terrible like those. I hope the got it sorted as it is a cute restaurant.

I have been going to Murrays for years and can't recommend it highly enough. As a matter of fact we went twice on consecutive evenings. We were a party of 7 on the first evening. The food and service are outstanding, not many establishments get it consistently right. We made requests for French fries when our food arrived, and within less than 5 minutes they were served to us. The restaurant was busy but there was no and delay, the food was hot and delicious. On the next evening my husband and I decided it was the only place in Cowes. We thought we would have a quiet dinner for 2, however, the friends who were with us on the previous evening also decided it was worth a second visit. Another busy night but everything was as good as the previous visit. I only wish Murrays was closer to Cirencester, I may have to relocate.

Just what you'd hope for in from a self professed seafood restaurant on the Isle of Wight - straightforward super fresh seafood. Nothing fancy - they just let the quality of the food speak for itself and it does. Reasonably priced considering what you're getting I had a half dozen brilliantly meaty oysters and a magnificent dressed crab. Just don't tell Dad jokes about undressed crabs - they've heard that one

A tiny place, clean, quiet and unfussy, you are here for the food which is cooked to perfection, greeted and seated quickly and efficiently, menu caters mainly for fish eaters ( i had a perfect chicken supreme, daughter had steak ), this was a treat for my wife who loves fish, we had 3 courses from the set menu and came away very pleased, impressed and full, the only demerit was the waitress did not crack a smile all night which actually had a comedic effect all of its own, the food is definitely the star of the show which is how it should be.

We had previously been to the Smoking Lobster in Ventnor and were hoping for a similar experience here. Reading the other reviews I can't recognise this restaurant at all. From walking in, the back room is dingy and something out of the 70's with no atmosphere. We were served by very un-enthusiastic family tag-team. We ordered the Oysters and these came out on a plate with no ice, or any accompaniments other than a sticky bottle of tabasco. No shallots or vinegar as you would expect. The oysters were not right at all and we felt uncomfortable eating them as they turned into a pink mush when we tried to take them away from the shell. We were worried we would be ill so sent them back and we paid £5 for them rather than £13.50 for them. We noticed another family also sent back their fish so we were very nervous when our mains arrived. The kids had grilled fish which was disgusting - under done and tasted off. It was still quite clear. I had half lobster but pathetic for the price paid £17.50.. My husbands cod was nice with a nice sauce but overall the oyster experience made us feel unhappy about the whole experience. My husband was ill later that day with an upset stomach. When the bill came and it was £70 we felt like we had just had a bad meal and wasted a lot of money... This is so inferior to the smoking lobster I have no idea how it received the ratings it has done on trip advisor. This was our worst meal by far on our whole week on the island.

I had booked a week prior to secure our reservation. Brian the owner responded in good time via email to confirm our arrangements. The occasion was to celebrate my Wife, Alice's birthday and the East Out to Help Out scheme was an added bonus. That said, I would have still booked Murrays regardless of the scheme as we had heard many good things since our move to Cowes at the end of 2019.We were greeted warmly and ensured we adhered to the Covid regulations put in place by Murrays. The restaurant is a small venue, but that is what we like. Cosy with ambience. That said, I think we wouldn't like to be in the back room but that is a personal preference. We were seated at one of two window tables which was perfect for us.Diners have a choice of a 2 or 3 course menu or an alternative Catch of The Day menu. All offer a very good choice and we could have picked most things on either menu. I went for the Local Dover Sole whilst my Wife had the Seas Bass Filet with Dijon Mustard Sauce. Both were exceptional. It goes without saying, that we both tasted each other's dish. Dessert was too tempting to resist and we had Creme Brulee with Raspberry Sorbet and Hand Made Blueberry Meringue with Blackberry and Clotted Ice Cream. Both were what we had hoped for.Murrays is a family run business and upon leaving, we expressed our satisfaction with Fran and Declan. We also learned a bit about the building and struck up a nice conversation. This was our first time at Murrays and we will return and can recommend with confidence. We have an Air Bnb and will be adding Murrays to our list of recommendations for dining. Thanks to all at Murrays for a lovely evening celebrating my Wife's birthday.Clive and Alice

We arrived in Cowes (with no bookings) very hungry after an early start. We called the restaurant and asked if they could accept a group of 6, we were delighted to receive a positive response. The menu choices were lovely with two options: a two or three course set menu or some really lovely fish dishes. There was also a very acceptable children’s menu. Our adults chose from the set menu and our children had the kids menu, which was a combination of fish and standard “kids” options. We had 4 very good starters (2 x smoked mackerel, smoked salmon & prawns, 1 x salt & pepper squid, 1 x meat selection). For our mains we had: 2 x pan fried cod, 2 x smoked haddock florentine with a selection of green vegetables and new potatoes. All was very well cooked, seasoned and presented and the service was added to the quaint atmosphere of the restaurant. Their fish was all locally sourced and the dishes were well constructed. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who asks and their full restaurant would suggest they are a very popular choice for many. If you like fish then you should this place out.

Two families visited 7 in total, not the greatest welcome to start with, after ordering a bottle of wine we then had to ask for the bottle of wine again after 15min as they had forgotten to bring it over, as for the food one of us had the salt and pepper squid, (calamari) all I can say is that it tasted like it was frozen then deep fried, not the greatest. Also just to add that it was one of the hottest days of the year and even though there was an air con unit this sadly did not work so as you can imagine it was warm and uncomfortable. Two of us had the steak, one medium and one midium rare, both came out the same as eachq other, again this was not great and a disappointment, lastly one of our party had the monkfish and prawns, the prawns again tasted like they were frozen then quick fried, we all certainly expected more from this restaurant as the reviews were all pretty good, we were all sadly disappointed by what was served to us, sadly we will not be returning.

We booked to eat here on a Saturday evening and although the food was good, the overall experience was disappointing. Service was minimal to say the least and we had a very small, cramped corner bench table for two which did spoil the experience. Service staff seemed more interested in chatting amongst themselves at the bar than anything else. The food was good, in fact the whole grilled bass was excellent however this was no choice of side dish and our potatoes and vegetables arrived quite a while after the fish itself. Maybe it was just an off night but I left feeling that the reality did not live up to the hype and there are definitely friendlier, more comfortable places to eat.

I was super excited to eat here. I was left a bit disappointed however. Was just a bit bland and nothing exciting. We did have an enjoyable evening though, and the staff were great, really friendly, no complaints there. I ordered monkfish which was a special, small portion and just a bit tasteless. My partner was happier than I was with his meal. When I looked around at others diners meals, I did get food envy perhaps I ordered wrong.

Best meal on the island! We ate here twice on our holiday and both times were impressed. Fresh fish and seafood cooked to perfection. Great options for kids and really good service. Highly recommend 👍🏻

I am on a weekend holiday trip from London. We have spent our time visiting many lovely seafood restaurants in the area. I have no clue why all the reviewers are giving this spot amazing scores. The seafood is somewhat fresh but for £40 the lobster served was pathetic. It was not prepared well with garlic and butter (no flavour really) and the lobster itself lacked any subtle sweetness and it’s flesh was chewy. The prawns were tiny and quite literally reminded me of a packet of cocktail prawns easily picked up from Waitrose. The ‘reformed’ crab was also a huge miss. They took out all the meat from the crab and put it back in the shell (seems like a lot of meat was lost ?). Moreover, every dish was served with coleslaw or some weak salad and perhaps a set of baked potatoes none of which really adds the dish and instead serves as a pointless filler. However, the people are quite friendly and lovely to speak to.I can saw with full confidence that 100% you are definitely better off going to a place like the “smoking lobster” or “The hut” instead of here since you will be paying same amount for miles better food and portions. Just shocked by how highly priced these were for their quality.

Lovely meal out at Murray's tonight. Quality of fish and ambience just as good as ever, with the added bonus of all covid secure procedures in place. Great work Fran, Brian and team. Super service from Declan. Thanks for making our first visit back to Cowes a great one.

Popped in for lunch. Felt very safe with partitions between tables. Really enjoyed the food especially the fish soup and smoked haddock florentine. Great service.

The outside is a little modest and the owners have crammed as many tables in as possible You can easily forgive this though. The food is really good md for the standard the price is very fair. Naturally the menu is predominantly seafood but I had the Antipasti starter and the creme brûlée was divine

We stopped off to get some chips and a batterd sausage and fish cake on a Saturday lunchtime after a walk on the nearby beach. The lady was lovely and our food was delicious and very well priced. The sausage was one of the best it was absolutely delicious we will be back again.

Haven't been here for years and had forgotten how good it was. In our opinion the best fish and chips around at the moment. Friendly service, freshly cooked large portions at a sensible price. Plenty of choice of extras if fish is not your thing. Only downside is the limited parking spaces on the road. One little oddity, in this day and age, they only take cash.

I usually go to Wights for fish and chips as they are excellent. However, due to upgrading, I found they were closed. The nearest fish and chip shop was Tony’s.So I thought I would give them a try.Unfortunately, due to the ridiculously small portions,I won’t be going back.I don’t see how they could charge so much for about a dozen or so chips.I had to pay an extra £2 to get enough for two people.Wights are always excellent and not swamped in grease like Tony’s.Shame.
