M&S Kitchen in Newcastle upon Tyne

Very long queue for the machines to order. They’d run out of children’s sandwiches and certain drinks but you only found out once you’d tried to order and the item faded slightly. Surely the person managing the queue could have let us know as it was a long wait for young children to then not get what they’d like. Jacket potato was small but with a lovely coleslaw side. Won’t bother returning, not even without the kids.

Cheap looking cafeteria similar to what one would expect in a school or hospital. Machines like McDonald’s which were quick to access. No saucers and when requiring a sugar told to take one as need to remove them from table. Coffee was one of the worst in Newcastle. It was watery and very very harsh tasting certainly not worth the £3.30. Would I return No plenty of competition around Newcastle

Terrible new system which was so confusing even the staff member couldn’t access any of the products. We just left and went to Fenwicks. Never again

Ridiculous computer ordering system akin to McDonald's. More staff standing around when they could have been serving you. Too many confused elderly customers struggling with the computer. Served dishwater coffee, Luke warm and tasteless

After visiting Newcastle which is now so run down, we visited Fenwicks cafe and walked out the staff had a poor attitude allround.So we went into Marks and Spencers with the main restraunt closed we were greeted by a lady supervisor who greeted everyone in the cue with a smile,She made everyone feel welcome and deserves recognition saved Newcastle's day. Thankyou

The staff on the till are so lovely and kind. But my god... Everything is filthy. No clean cutlery at all. No clean tables. Food all over the floors. Nothing left on the menu at 4pm. Nothing for vegetarians, vegans, gf or anything. Won't return. Food wasn't nice. Nobody cares.

Ordered 2 x breakfast wraps, could not believe what was served for nearly 6 quid each, small wrap shrivelled up v small sausage a few beans inside and the egg was reconstituted, it was a microwave frozen wrap thing, and stone cold in the middle, so i complained and got told that they would make us another one and make sure it was hot in the middle ! we declined and was given a refund. Finished our so called coffee whilst listening to a staff member shout across the cafe that there was a light out in the fridge ! Needles to say wont be returning

We go into the cafe (upstairs) twice a week and over the past couple of months watched things going down hill with the shortage of staff serving or un trained staff attempting to make coffee etc. Last week a young lad was attempting to make various coffees and the queue was outside into the main shop floor Drinks were coming back cold or made wrongly. The two young girls on the tills were embarrassed and kept saying sorry to customers for the wait. Customers who were waiting of drinks were being brought bacon sandwiches ,toast etc to the counter, because they had searched for them at the tables, we were asked if we wanted our pot of tea replaced because we had stood at the counter so long waiting for coffee and the girl said the tea would only be warm. Despite the queue being so long no one came to his rescue to help out. Where was the Supervisor ? This is not M and S expected standards.

Suprised many people don’t go anymore! Lovely and quiet and darkish lighting, calms you down straight away. I went for a cheese scone and a cup of tea with my grandma the other day and it was lovely, no distractions from the busy shops and streets. I definitely will be going back to calm my anxiety when i’m out shopping. Was sad to see it so empty as when I was little i used to go all the time and it used to be packed with customers. The staff are very polite and hard working, very friendly and calm around you.

i had two scones with butter very nice.my better half had baked potato with tuna not very nice, no butter on i fetched some.the tuna was very sloppy. covid rules did not seem to matter.many things wrong.

We went in here for a coffee on Friday morning early...out of 10 additional customers to us 2 sanitizer their hands on arrival. Customers using tongs to get scones etc...and not being cleaned between use. Tables not being sanitised between use. Staff handling cash and notes not cleaning hands between use.... Sorry we won’t be back until you can guarantee this changes...come on M&S get your act together for us all.

I don't go anywhere else for scones or cream tea because they just make them so good here! Highly recommend if you love scones!

Visited this cafe on Tuesday 3rd November - yes it was busy, waited ages for coffee, because the machine was playing up! when it did arrive it was totally undrinkable When I asked if there were any 'Gluten Free honeycomb crispy bars ,( which are individually wrapped) I was told because of COVID they were unable to sell them?? They do have them for sale in the store and they do sell packets of biscuits which are not Gluten Free -i'm confused

unfortunately, its an ordinary cafe servine some ingredients from the m and s food hall. its like many other cafes where the staff dont have the time to clean up after customers as thoroughly as they could. its a cafe with a portal to m and s but not anything more than an ordinary cafe. come on m and s, up your game

Visited with family for a quick lunch. There was a decent choice of hot and cold sandwiches. Good choice of coffees including decaf. Served hot with good service to table with the heated sandwiches.

Popped in today after a spot of shopping with my granny and if I'm totally honest I wasn't very impressed at all. Ordered the ploughman's platter and no ham. After waiting 15-20 minutes for ham I just wanted my money back. All this and no table checks from staff (who were all gathered around the till). Was offered a pretty lame excuse for a wrong order with my cash back and wondered if I would have even been given a refund if I hadn't had asked? Possibly not ! Not so much the order but the pretty terrible service persuaded me to write this review.

My sister and me went in here yesterday for their advertised Christmas Lunch. With it being M&S; who usually sell delicious food I didn't have any worries about eating in their cafe. How wrong was I! From the dirty tables and miserable staff that should have been the warning signs! The food itself was awful, it was worse then a microwaved canteen style meal. The 'cubes' of veg were soggy lumps, the roast pots were cold in the middle and piping hot on the outside. The Turkey was rock hard on the curled edges, the sprouts tasted old as did the yorkshire pudding and all the rest of the rubbish on the plate. One positive - the Gravy was quite delicious and a nice cup of tea! At £8.50 per meal you have to up your game M&S;!!!...... Its no wonder your stores are closing down. You can pay a few pounds more and get much better food in Newcastle then what you served up!

Over priced rubbish! £7.95 for an English breakfast that A) didn’t have beans! And B) was cold! Think the staff could also do to be trained in customer service. A smile goes a long way! Won’t be returning... EVER!

Los sándwiches tostados solo están tostados por un lado y francamente no son nada atractivos.

Service was slow getting hot drinks. Bacon sandwich was lukewarm and only had scraps of bacon in it.

Now a regular place for lunch. Although it can be a little pricey for a store cafe the food is always lovely especially the Macaroni Cheese. the staff are always friendly and helpful. Not the quickest of service to it's popularity.

Busy, friendly atmosphere. The staff were friendly and chatty. I had a pot of tea, which was lovely and hot, with a good taste. I also had a Lemon and Pistachio cake. It was a lovely taster just the size.

When is a toastie not a toastie? Apparently when it's one from Marks & Spencer. My wife and I ordered a toastie, and when it was brought to our table it looked OK - nice and brown on top. On picking it up it fell apart. It was soggy. The bottom slice of bread was just that, a slice of untoasted bread. We brought it to the attention of a member of staff who said he would replace it with a fresh one. When he brought a replacement he said he had "given it a bit longer to brown it", then added "we are not allowed to flip them in the oven." We took this as the reason why it was only brown on one side. We asked for clean knives as the ones we had taken from the cutlery receptacle were dirty - very off-putting. This toastie was no different from the first one. Once again the bottom slice of bread was not toasted, but hunger prevailed and we finished it. I certainly would not recommend a Marks & Spencer toastie if this is the best they can do.

I had the lasagne and girl friend had the quiche, both came In reasonable time and was hot and tasty, I think it's a bit on the expensive side though, The place is clean and tidy, nice staff,

Slow service, the staff don't seem to have a clue what's going on and the rest are wandering around looking a bit lost. Dirty cup and saucer and overpriced food. You expect a high standard from M&S, unfortunately you don't get that here.

Count on us New York Deli Pastrami low fat sandwich cost £2-60 very dry soft rye bread barely any Pastrami lettuce or onion This was the worst tasteless sandwich I have had will not buy again

Basic and practice can be very noisy with scraping chairs and tables it dosnt encourage to sit to long not cosy

I think the quality of M&S Kitchen depends on the time of day you come here. Early in the morning it is clean and welcoming but during the busy hours of the day and at weekends, one gets the impression that the staff, no matter how hard-working they are, are struggling to keep up with serving and table clearing. The cafe serves good coffee and a range of casual foods including soup, sandwiches, scones etc. The quality is good - typical M&S freshness. Prices are not the cheapest in town, but you are paying for the M&S brand which usually means good quality. The cafe is right in the heart of the shopping district of town, close to the Metro station of Haymarket, and attached to a superb M&S store.

M&S have really got this right - situated in the heart of the city joining their store this is a great place to meet greet and have a cuppa and that all important scone be it cheese or fruit the M&S quality shrines through

I met my sister with my daughter and partner for drinks, I ordered 3 drinks, including a tea. My partner is from London so mentioned how cheap it was... Turned out, the young man behind the counter wasn't listening when I gave him my order and had not charged me for the tea. Rather than saying politely, he whispered to the other lady working with him, who proceeded to shout as loud as she could to show them my receipt because I had no paid for the tea. There was a line full of people, I've never been made to feel so embarrassed in all of my life over £1.90. I work in hospitality as well and wouldn't dream of ever going about it that way. I shop in marks and Spencer's for my daughter, the staff are usually lovely but these two members really put me off.

We were on a weekend break in Newcastle and after several hours roaming around the shops we stopped off here for some lunch. We had some toasted sandwiches which were absolutely delicious and hot cross buns, The food was really great and very reasonable. It might seem easy to get a toastie right but these were really tasty! They definitly hit the spot after all that shopping and walking around!

have been here a few times on a saturday, visited once again yesterday and yet again found dirty and uncleared tables, stood to be served for fifteen minutes and in that time no table including my own was cleared, asked a member of staff who was bringing food out to clear it and ten mins later she came back to do so. come on get a grip m and s you dont sell anything different to any other stores , whats happened to being a great high street leader.

Whenever I nip into town for shopping, maybe once a month, meet friends for a catch up, we meet here. Not overly large or exceptionally busy because the staff are fast and efficient. Nice variety of sandwiches and quiches and the soups are very tasty too. Little more expensive than McDs, Costas, Starbucks etc but nicer sync much more comfortable seating.

After queueing for 15 minutes today for two coffees I nearly gave up the will to liveDoesn't seem to be very organised at the counterI appreciate it was a Saturday but surely they take that into consideration when staffing Rotas as put together

I come here pretty often for tea and cakes with friends. Cakes are always nice, seating is relatively plentiful. They need to work a bit on getting queue down and also making sure glasses and cutlery are clean and shiny.

Food is good but expensive for what you get. Often pop in when doing the shopping, because even though dear, quality is good. Normally just have cake and coffee.

Staff here really need to be re-trained! especially on the hot drinks! Poor service poor value! I don't often write negative reviews on here but come on M & S!!!!!

Been in here several times, I used to like the coffee, but the last few visits either they gave me half a cup if it was cappuccino or if I asked for a flavoured latte I had to go back and ask them to put the syrup in, now I only order tea, it is no longer a relaxing astmosphere.

I ordered a sausage bun which was £3.25 and for that price it was a thorough disgrace!Although it tasted ok it was tiny and massively overpriced! I know, it's M&S but still you would think some effort would have went into it! It just looked as though it had been thrown together! I've had better from a burger van free a night out!Not a chance I would return!

One of my favourite places to meet friends for a quick cuppa and a toasted teacake at lunchtime. Free bisuit with every cuppa a lovely touch

As there are at least 4 eating venues at Newcastle's M&S I am guessing the Kitchen is high stool one in the food hall. I've eaten here about 15 times and the food has always been good - coffee is excellent.However, the service has always been lax, and my last visit is definitely the last. A friendly male greeter stood beside a very large menu at the corner. I sat just behind him and waited for one of the two waitresses to notice me. The place was only half full, with most people already dining. Neither waitress looked my way - even though they were not busy - for ten minutes. The greeter must have noticed this and (without any instigation from me) shouted to one of the women that I needed serving.She asked me what I wanted, and I ordered the (only) soup, followed by the chicken schnitzel. She asked me if I wanted them at the same time, which is a first for me in the UK. I repeated the same words, and she understood them. The chef brought me the soup 10 minutes later without a spoon, and as he was walking away I asked for one. That took 3 minutes, and was handed over without a word. I then had to get the waitress's attention to ask for salt and pepper.After the mains I asked for the bill. I was given the wrong one, which charged twice the amount. The waitress apologised (for the 3rd time overall).Sorry about this being a saga, but it is obvious that no monitoring is done at this café. It's a pity, because the food and location are very good, but the service is lazy, uncaring and abysmal.

On a shopping day out my husband and I stopped here for something to eat, we 1st went upstairs to the cafe but there was a queue and I've no idea why as there was loads of seats and a member of staff keeping customers waiting! We then decided to go to the cafe downstairs and we were served very quickly by pleasant staff and the food was really nice, it was very busy but the staff seemed to be coping so much better than the cafe upstairs who seemed happy to keep customers waiting for no reason!

My daughter first ate here and really enjoyed it. I looked up the reviews on Tripadvisor and they were not good at all. On a visit to Newcastle to see my daughter, we had lunch there and it was really rather good for what it is. It is not haute cuisine nor is it trying to be - it is a good, above average lunchtime cafeteria. I had the most delicious prawn and avocado salad - masses or prawns and ripe(!) avocado on fresh lettuce. My daughter had an extremely tasty and generous chicken salad. Staff were friendly and helpful and the tables were all full with grannies to toddlers. Excellent value for the quantity and quality of the food.

This was the best M and S cafe we have eaten at albeit more of a restaurant than your usual cafe. Very friendly helpful staff, good food, we enjoyed our lunch here very much. My husband and I had a baguette and my son had a delicious tasty lasagne that can be bought in the foodhall - his favourite! 10/10

What more can I say , ! M&S fab all the way I like it that when they run out of something they go into shop and get it,

It's not often I'm driven enough to write a review about an experience, I only ever write one when the place is either incredible or completely terrible; I assure you the latter is true in this case. I know that Marks is supposed to be slightely more high-end but to be honest that doesn't mean it's okey to skimp on vital ingredients and charge more for doing so. First of all I'll say that I'm a vegetarian but it never limits my experience of a good old English breakfast at somewhere like Spoons which to be honest we were actually looking for when we walked past the M&S restaurant and decided to try something new. I think whatever class of person you are the full English breakfast is a staple that should rarely be messed around with. Marks and Spencer's 'full English breakfast' does not offer you fried eggs, instead it's either scrambled or poached, which is a little bit silly considering how easy it would be to just offer all three kinds. They also do not offer beans, and what's more is the beans are not even replaced with some other more pretentious ingredient.We asked the waitress if there were beans and whether we could have some with ours, to which she replied 'yes we do have beans and we should be able to have beans at an extra cost of 50p', a little stingy I'd say but none the less we asked for beans. She returned with our Iceless small drinks and said that she'd been told off and was not allowed to offer beans to us, seems a little odd as they have beans in stock. We felt sorry for her and we're not the people to make a scene so we said it's okay. Later the food arrived, strangely shaped small hash browns, two poached eggs, some relatively cold mushrooms and some completely cold toast. We asked for brown sauce to help with the dryness of the food due to lack of beans, which came in a small rationed pot, meaning we'd have to be very awkward and ask for more, or go without when we ran out of it.My girlfriend didn't finish hers as she didn't like the seemingly spiced hash browns, cold toast, and the partially undercooked eggs. We paid the £14.50 and left, that's £5.95 each for the small breakfasts, and £2.50 for my glass of orange juice!!!!! I'm about to send M&S an email too because I am actually furious. If you want a good breakfast, go to Spoons, it's cheaper, bigger, better tasting, and you get a free drink with it.On another note, the staff were very polite, Spoons should employ them.

Waited 40 minutes for a table. When we were eventually seated and ordered, 2 of the choices had just become unavailable. We ordered food for 4 out of 6 of our party. Drinks came relatively quickly. Food took over 25 minutes. By which time one pot of tea (part of the cream tea package) was freezing cold. 2 of the childrens meals were stone cold. We are regular users of m & s kitchen and cafe, however, I will never step foot in this kitchen again. The staff had NO idea how to seat people effectively and couldn't have cared less about the length of time people waited. Then to be served food not fit for a dog is utterly despicable. Im disgusted and deeply upset about our visit.

First time we have eaten here. We had the full breakfast with scrambled egg. The quality of the food was very good, taste excellent! It was fast and hot. The service from the staff was polite, friendly and attentive. Really enjoyed our meal and will return. Many thanks :-)

I think the intention is to grab a slice of the quick bite shopper. In using their brand name customers are guided with expectance towards quality and value. Table for two was quick and the very limited menu was quickly explored. A bottle of beer and glass of wine arrived quickly which was followed in no time by the meal, Food poor. The end. Establishment is stuck in no mans land.Casual cafe or restaurant ? Neither. Friendly staff but now having read the reviews I guess their cage may have been rattled. I had the impression we were about to be pounced on at any time for the removal of the plates. Paying for it was a game and a half with no one behind the counter. A young girl was dancing for the toilet so the tiller girl took her off into the depths of the shop for relief. Lesson learned and I know we will not be back.

Loved the scones, cookies, healthy meal options.Service is quick and supportive staff.... Must go to eat scones with clotted cream, jam and coffee

We ordered 2 coffees and 2 cakes on a somewhat quiet afternoon-the place was not at all busy, and we sat outdoors. We paid in advance and after 20mins and a reminder to staff, the coffees arrived, and they were not piping hot. Another two reminders to staff followed, concerning the cakes. What they were doing to delay so long I fail to understand. It wasn't as if they had to cook a meal and bring it to us and the shop was not busy- in fact staff were standing around. 40mins after ordering, the cakes finally appeared, though the cutlery had to be got afterwards To be fair we were offered more coffee as we complained that the original coffees were cold and had been drunk by then. In a prestigious position on the main city centre street this place could be amazing but at present is letting M&S down very badly. Staff training should be their first priority at all levels.

Whilst I am shopping I enjoy lunch but don't really want to spend too long over it. Unfortunately the service here is often quite slow and its difficult to hurry the staff along. I am no longer going to eat here because of this . There are superior places to eat in newcastle which serve business lunches quickly and efficiently. M and s kitchen is quite disappointing as their concept is good, and the 2 course lunch with a glass of wine for £10 represents fantastic value. Indeed if you visit m and s kitchen at the metro centre gateshead you will have a completely different experience, they are efficient and the food there is delicious. Why??

Went in for two cappucinnos, ordered at 11.30 at 12.05 had to find someone to see where our coffees were. Wasn't busy ,in the time we waited 4 other tables who had come in after us had been served. No wonder they take payment before you get served because if they didn't customers would just leave.They need to start breaking out in a sweat to make sure customers are served in a quick and friendly manner.Avoid at all cost.

This was v disappointing- my keep fuller meal was awful- dried up microwaved food! Tasted much worse than if I'd bought it taken if home and cooked it myself. This needs serious improvement. My husbands meal was also disappointing.

My Wife and I decided to have a quick bite at this restaurant while we were doing some shopping in Town. Because we normally love Marks and Spencer food, and spend a lot of our hard earned cash in there food outlets, we thought this would be a good choice. How wrong we were ! The service was good the staff polite, but we ordered a Chicken Caesar salad, which came on a bed of crispy lettuce and garnished with a nice caesar sauce, but the chicken was overdone, and almost unpalatable, and the bacon was the worst cut of stringy and gristly bacon I have ever seen and was underdone and again completely unpalatable ! My Wife chose a steak chapatti with wedges, sounds wonderful, but again the mixture of Luke warm fatty steak, with there onion sauce, and wedges which were also served almost cold, did not impress. We were both hugely disappointed as we were really hungry and looking forward to something really hot and welcoming to bring some cheer to the very wet and cold day.I doubt that we would ever return !

We were very regular visitors to this restaurant but in recent weeks the waiting time for simple dishes like a sandwich, even when it's quiet, is becoming ridiculous. Went in today at 11am and ordered two orange juices and a sandwich. There were only 15 other customers in. By 11.40 our order had still not arrived, so we stood up and walked out. With the prices they charge you should expect a quicker service but it wasn't forthcoming.On a previous occasion my other half ordered the soup with bread. The bread came with walnuts inside it (not advertised on the menu) and as she has an allergy her mouth swelled up. The staff didn't seem to care.It's letting M&S down.

We all know M&S food from the foodhall is a bit on the expensive side, but, like many things in life, you get what you pay for.Not wanting a big lunch and not fancying heading to our usual haunts, we popped our head into the M&S Kitchen after turning away from the huge queue at the M&S Cafe just across the store. Seeing that it wasn't especially busy and spying the menu, we were quickly shown to a table and told how to order.My better half had herself cream scones and a pot of tea whilst I had a smoked salmon sandwich. The scones came with a small pot of cream and a very tasty jam, with the missus declaring that it was one of the better jams she had ever tasted. Meanwhile, we found that the smoked salmon on white bloomer to be large and very tasty. The sandwich also came with a few handcook crisps to boot.With drinks this came in at a shade under £15.Obviously not as good as a restaurant, better than a greasy spoon, and a damn sight better than going to Gregg's for a few sausage rolls, but, you will pay more than you really wanted to...
