Popped in for a cup of Tea and cakes with my daughter yesterday, felt like going back to the 1800 What a wonderfully eccentric fabulous place, cakes were amazing and at only £2.25 a slice great value too. We loved everything about this place, coffee room so cosy and I can image not much different to how it would have been in the late 1700’s, service so quick and attentive and yes the toilet is a scream. We forget to ask the lovely owner if he had painted the beautiful hanging sign outside of a coffee pot as that was what drew us in, can’t wait to return.

Anyone who criticises this place doesn’t understand how a coffee house should be! Beautiful early 18c building serving steaming hot coffee by the most charming host, Mr Salvat. We stumbled upon this curious old place and were pleasantly surprised. Quaint little dining room and Mr Salvat played the part well. We had veggie lasagne, ploughmans and leek and potato soup. All felt homemade but ploughmans was a bit disappointing. Opted for cold drinks but hot teas would have been better option. Finished with carrot cake and it was a bit dry but still lovely and homemade. Give it a go! Unique experience, my liege!! Cash only, no cards.

On a whistle stop first ever visit to Bradford on Avon we passed this lovely old building with a glimpse of a little garden down a narrow passageway. It looked so intriguing we stopped on way back for a cup of tea and cake. It wasn't what I had expected but was perhaps the better for it. A really friendly and welcoming owner (in period costume) and a quirky old building. We sat outside in what felt like a little secret garden - an oasis of cool and calm on a hot day. Had a lovely pot of the house tea - delicious and piece of carrot cake (although I was not so keen on that). Had a look inside on the way out - very characterful. Would recommend as a café different from the norm - just what is needed - a pleasant change from chains and uniformity.

After a walk around the town on a chilly afternoon, we looked for a place to have a cup of tea and decided this looked very inviting. As you enter the building, the kitchen is on the right and a door on the left takes you into the coffee shop with little 'booths' to sit in making it very cosy. We had a pot of earl grey tea and some delicious spicy toasted tea cakes which tasted home-made. The prices are very reasonable and there is a good selection of snacks on the menu.

Hard to know what to make of this place. The garden was splendid as it was a fine day but the atmosphere was diminished by the green plastic chairs. Similarly the coffee room inside is beautiful but why spoil a 18th century fireplace with a TV screen of a fire? The kitsch theme continues with the avocado bathroom (complete with bath) upstairs. There is a little bit of the Fawlty Towers in this place and I couldn't help but recall tea rooms of the 1980s by coming here. I don't mind a bit of English eccentric and I'm all for people putting their personal stamp on their establishment but you get the feeling the place has seen better days and the owner is sitting on his laurels and scrimping a bit too. The teas and coffees are good but I wouldn't bother with the savoury food (portions on the small side and very little is home made). The cakes are homemade in Bradford (the ginger cake was delicious) but again the portions are ungenerous. All in all if you stick to coffee and tea in the garden, it's perfectly OK but for anything else there are plenty of better places in Bradford.

We settled ourselves in for tea and cake after a very long walk. It was difficult to find a table to accommodate five adults but we squeezed on to a table by the window. Found this lovely little coffee house purely by chance. Friendly welcome on entering into what seemed like someone's private home. Sat in the last available comfy little booth; there are 5 in total with seating outside if weather permits. I had a cup of coffee and home baked scone with 'proper' clotted cream - delicious. The 70s avocado bathroom suite made me chuckle as it was so out of keeping with the period of the rest of the place. I also got the impression that this reverted to the owner's private bathroom once the coffee house closed but curiously this didn't put me off. Quite the opposite in fact, will definitely return when next in the area. I loved it.

Mr Salvat's Coffee Room is an experience that will leave a lasting memory on both of us. When we came we found a proprietor that had done his utmost to give an authentic image of an old time coffee house. If you want Costa, then get a life and go somewhere else. This place is not for you. This place has love and character that you cannot and will not ever EVER get from a chain. His tea is blended by himself and blew me away, his cakes are home made and have set a level for gingercake that I will find hard to beat. The food he has created is not the largest portion but the tastes are that good! And when you are soaking up the ambience of the room, the cracking fire (he he) and Mr Salvat himself you realise that this is one of the better coffee or tea houses that you will ever visit. So glad we did, it's prompted me to actually write a review. If you want your barrista's to make you 15 different styles of coffee, in a homogenised environment, where you could be in any High St in the UK then don't visit. If you want a decent tea and homemade cake, inside a building that the owner hasn't felt the need to rip out it's interior to keep in vogue of what is deemed fashionable then I can wholeheartedly recommend. If only more people could take note of the charismatic Mr Salvat's efforts, visiting tearooms and coffee houses would be so much more interesting.

If you didn't know about this little place, you'd never find it, or even know to look for it. Just as well, really, because there isn't room for more than just a handful of guests at any one time.Tucked away in an unlikely-looking house in a back-street of Bradford-on-Avon, is this lovely little café. Although there is a room indoors, you feel immediately compelled to walk through the café into the garden, where you will find a couple of tables and a few chairs. The real charm of this garden is its wildness and uncared-for appearance, though that may be deliberate, to get people talking about what could or should be done out there. We ordered cream teas and cakes, all of which were lovely, though we should have asked for a second scone, as they were quite small. We also made the mistake of asking if they did ordinary tea - in other words not just Earl Grey - to which the proprietor retorted "There's nothing ordinary about my tea". And he was right - there was nothing at all ordinary about anything connected with this café, Even a visit to the upstairs loo was an experience, although a very nice one.Next time I'm in this interesting village, I can't imagine taking tea anywhere else.

He did, to his credit, refuse to charge us for any of our order but it was a really peculiar experience all round! The apology did come later but we were still rather gutted for the poor cake lady. Popped in here on Fathers day on the way back from Birmingham - an excellent route between Weymouth and Brum by the way..3hrs up and back.Had a very nice tea ( proper - loose) and we both had Ploughmans with beautifully warm bread and Wyke butter ( where my third Labrador was born) I had tried a number of canal side taverns which were all heaving so this was JUST the ticket

now here's something you don't see every day. When your order is taken by a man in gaiters with a quill pen then you know life has returned to normal!Garden at the back accommodates 10 at most but you could be a million miles away and lost.Coffee not great, but cakes make up for it,so overall a great experience and one that shan't forget in a hurry.

Stopped here for coffee as soon as we arrived at Bradford. Enchanting building steeped in history with a very pleasant eccentric owner who wrote down your order using a quill whilst dressed in period costume. As a great admirer of ancient architecture from certain periods I was enchanted!I had a hot chocolate which I have to say was the best I've ever tasted.... That went for the ginger cake as well.I was amused at having to hoist myself up to the first floor by a rope bannister to the loo and thought it a pity that not much care had been taken with the decor, but each to their own.It was nevertheless a brilliant stop, off to be repeated.

A real step back in time. The waiter was authentically dressed and used a Quill pen to take our order. We sat on old wooden settles, in front of a roaring fire. The soup was delicious and hot, served with crusty bread.

We happened upon this lovely little tea room and were delighted both with the ambience and the food. It was like stepping back in time, with the virginals playing and the owner complete with period dress and a quill to take your orders. The eccentrics did not distract from the quality of the food however, and I enjoyed a lovely home cooked vegetable lasagne at a very reasonable price. We had tasty teacakes to follow which are highly recommended. A great experience.

So we set foot in this quaint coffee shop only to see a sign pointing towards a closed door. Upon opening it you find a small room with partitioned booths. The door shuts behind you and you are now blasted back into the past with harsichordal music being played and a roaring fire going on a Samsung screen placed in the fireplace. As soon as we sat down a gentleman came in, all dressed in 1700 overalls to greet us with a quill and pad. We chose our drinks, mine being a filter coffee and my partners an Earl Grey tea. Being a historian, Earl Grey tea or rather flavoured tea in general had never originated in England until the 1830's. That aside it was a very pleasant service and good pricing. The lasagne I ordered was generally good but with a large burned bit at the base so I was slightly dissatisfied. Although it is a good idea and I love historic buildings maintaining their looks I cannot help but feel trapped and isolated in that room. The booths do separate the views inside the room and add to the dark and dingy look but maybe that is supposed to add to the effect. The coffee was actually a brown filter cup on top of my cup instead of a cafetiere and with it being a coffee shop I expected more choice at least. All in all I would recommend people to visit it but I don't think I could come back again.

We called in at Mr Salvat’s just by chance before setting off on a walk along the river Avon. What a find! If you are happy with the usual coffee shops now seen on every high street then perhaps you should give this establishment a miss but if you are looking for something out of the ordinary then give it a try. As other reviews mention you enter a world that Shakespeare might be familiar with including Mr Salvat himself who takes your order with a quill pen. As it was mid-morning we chose coffee, tea and the best toasted teacake we have eaten in a café for a long time. The menu although not extensive looks to be very appetising and good value. Give it a try and you’ll more than likely want to return in the future.

The nearest you could find to what a real eighteenth century coffee house would have been like. Any description would make the place sound like a self-conscious fake, but this owner knows when and where to stop trying too hard; the result is totally convincing, and very relaxing. The food is good, and that comforting little bit less expensive than you might expect. And what's more, the place seems to be always open. To eat charmingly, and cheaply, in England at three thirty on a weekday afternoon is a real rarity!

This place surely must be unique, in a very good way, but difficult adequately to describe. Let's cut to the chase- the coffee was Rombouts individual cup filters- no messing, and very good, served with hot milk ("naturally", said the owner, who had pre-heated the mugs too, and looked slighlty puzzled that we should imagine that he would not). My wife asked for a toasted tea cake but, wary of the usual chilled pat delivered by the side of a lukewarm bun, asked that the butter be put on straight away so that it melted. Again, he was ahead of us- but had also heated the plates, and the result- hot, full of fruit, and oozing butter- was truly delicious, quite the best we have ever had. The interior is period eighteenth century, without Hollywood set-dressing- upright benches, bare tables. "Stepping back in time", as one reviewer puts it, but in a totally unique way that makes even the National Trust seem pastiche. This polite and kindly man's dedication to quality and attention to detail is extrordinary. He must love what he does. Do not miss it!

On a beautiful Spring day, we had a light lunch in the back garden where there are a handful of tables on a grassy area. We must have Americans stamped on our foreheads as the other diners (all Brits) began to talk to us and ask where we were from (California) and how we were enjoying England (immensely). Our lunch suddenly took on the atmosphere of a fun garden tea party and we were the guests of honor. Fun! Hubby and I each ordered very good Leek and Potato Soup and a Jacket Potato (we'd never heard of such a thing, so we were thinking potato skins, but it's a big baked potato stuffed with cheese and herbs - perfectly baked and quite delicious). Also very filling. The older gentleman waiting tables and a young man working inside were dressed in old blouse-like shirts to match the charming old building - both were friendly and super efficient. I kept thinking of the Jerry Seinfeld episode when he wore the "blouse." The townhouse originally belonged to a cloth merchant, so it was nice to see the inside of such a charming place. Would definitely return for the ambience and the food if ever in the area again. Thank you fellow diners for being so nice, friendly, and welcoming.

Mr Salvat is an eccentric gentlemen dressed in C18-style clothing and writes orders with a long quill. He's getting on in age, but has a spring in his step and constantly humming. The indoor table/seating areas are intimate, and the secluded garden is an oasis of tranquillity, despite being on a main road. His own blended tea was very good, but would have preferred it in a china cup rather than big thick mug. My friend's lasagne was very tasty with very lean mince, although rather small, and would have been better with a little salad. Sadly, my potato & leek soup was very powdery and tasteless. However, the atmosphere and his joy was infectious, so more than made up for any shortcomings.

Occasionally its good to try places that are so very very different from the modern world and Mr Salvat's coffee room is certainly that!. We loved it.Belief can be suspended for a while, just enjoy the quirkiness of this establishment. The open log fire that looks as if it has never gone cold since the 18th century, the quill pen (biro) that the impish man uses to take your order, the cosy cubicle style layout built it would seem using early Ikea plans and material and the bathroom! Don't take any notice of the gaping hole in the ceiling at the top of the stairs or you could think that the whole place is about to fall down about your ears. Yet the food was excellent and reasonably priced. We hadn't seen the coffee served with the hot water dribbling from its cup-top container since the 1970's. The tea was made with real leaves - now there's a novelty .Do go and experience this throw back to years ago but not on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday as Mr Salvat will be at the market

Seconds from the railway station this is pretty much the first place you come to in Bradford-on-Avon and it's worth stopping here. Housed in a beautiful old building with a fire roaring in the front room this coffee house is pretty unusual in the age of Starbucks and should be celebrated; some of the reviewers' expectations were maybe a bit different but they didn't need to be so negative about what actually makes this place special. There are plenty of other places in BoA if you want a more standard tearoom. At Mr Salvat's, the menu is simple in a good way: cakes and light lunches at very good value. The old cove who runs it is a character and the cafe has the feel of a private house, so getting to go upstairs to nose around and use the bathroom is fun. An essential part of any visit to BoA!

Step into Mr Salvat's 17th century coffee house for time travel. You will be greeted by Mr Salvat in period costume and ushered into the panelled front room with porcelain decked mantel piece above the fireplace and ceiling hung with tankards. Coffee is served in individual filters and cake is obligatory: delicious and locally homemade. Warm iced ginger cake and a slice of brownie - more chocolate than cake - went down a treat. Our son's hot chocolate was topped with cream: luscious and warming with the first autumn nip in the air. Mr Salvat's Coffee Room is an interesting establishment and, as previous reviewers have said: a little different /eccentric but I must say in a quite nice way.The coffee room has some interesting light fittings ( tankards ) and old paintings adorn the walls. I can imagine the open fireplace would be lovely in the winter.Mr Salvat is at first a shock - you don't expect to be served by somebody in 17th C attire - billowing white shirt, & breeches or offered the Suduko puzzle to complete. But he is charming. The soup we had was rich, and tastey, the cake was enjoyable and the Tea was the real deal ( I.e. leaves )The toilet was very green and seemed to be his personal bathroom.Overall weird and delightful. Certainly worth a visit once!

Perhaps Mr Salvat didn't like the cut of our jib. Or perhaps, as other reviewers have hinted, he doesn't occupy the same time zone as the rest of us. We tried to pop in for a coffee at 4.45pm, only to be turned away, none too politely, with the words 'I close at five o'clock.' Well, despite what it says on the board outside, he obviously doesn't - he closes when he feels like it.There are many pleasant places to drink and eat in Bradford-on-Avon where you don't have to put up with a rather dishevelled old chap who emerges from his dingy, fusty interior to be rude to you.

My companion and I had a hard time keeping straight faces when our server arrived in full on period costumer, complete with breeches, stockings, buckled shoes and a quill pen to take the order with, but it definitely made our day! This is a quirky little place with a real atmosphere, that charges very reasonable prices for good quality food (it certainly came as a welcome relief after the breathtaking prices charged by the riverside establishments). The hot apple juice with cinnamon is something I am now determined to recreate at home. The stairs to the bathroom looked a little steep and could be a challenge for anyone unsteady on their feet, but otherwise this is a great place to while away your lunch hour.

Absolutely dreadful! Advertised a la carte menu replaced with a 'bar' menu. Took the waiter 15 minutes to bring a menu and ask if we'd like drinks 40 minutes for food to arrive which was not hot. The pork belly my colleague had was wrapped in gooey fat not crackling, the pumpkin sauce was a teaspoon of orange 'something' and the seasonal veg was mashed potato and some peas. The chicken burger was deep fried and tasted of old fryer fat as did the 'tepid' skin in chips. Presentation of the burger was non existent and the two tiny leaves of lettuce were brown. This was fed back to the waiter when he finally returned to our table his response was he'd mention it to the Chef. The after dinner treat of sticky toffee pudding was solid and rubbery, not moist. The tiniest bit of ice cream and a token gesture at the sauce all was tepid. The dining room was cold and drafty. The decor tired and wall paper peeling off the ceiling and walls. Utterly awful experience with nobody interested in the overall shoddiness of the service and food. Really disappointing, especially as this is the closest hotel to work. A real missed opportunity for this Hotel and Restaurant.
