Awful service - management were so rude. They were sexist and racist and when we made a complaint it turned out they were all family so said they wouldn’t need to record anything as they we’re not taking it seriously. Rude and obnoxious - such a shame as a lovely pizza restaurant with a beautiful beer garden would NEVER return and have told family, friends and colleagues to not go here. Not safe for lone women

Booked a table of 12 for 6.30 for an Hen Do, under a specific name. Upon arrival was told we were booked for 7 with no name noted. No one knew where we were meant to be seated. We were shifted from one table to the next, eventually resulting in another table being asked to move MID-MEAL!! Unacceptable. Finally placed on a table under a loud TV which staff initially refused to turn down. Group served at such different times that some of the group had finished by the time some were being served. Pub staff were rude and unapologetic, absolute let down for a very important day. Obvious that these problems were down to the pub and NOT Pizza Pony. Not. Good. Enough.

There is a warm family style welcome and the staff are just so accommodating. There was an excellent buffet with lots of variety. I visited this pub with my son who is in halls opposite. The atmosphere was good, pub was busy, and the pizzas looked lovely. As it was Friday the fish was on offer at 15% less, I didn't think the prices were too bad either. Sadly, from there on it was downhill. The fish arrived looking wrinkled and soggy with mush peas dumped on top of the batter which was never a great idea but at the end of the day didn't matter because the batter was already beyond redemption. I come from Cornwall where we are spoilt for fish and chips, so I do consider myself well-travelled in what is, and is not, acceptable for batter. I can, and do eat most things, but this fish was beyond me. I only managed to pull the white fish out from beneath the batter and eat that, the chips were nice though. At lunch time we ate in Wetherspoons and had 2 satisfaction checks, one before we even had a mouthful of our food! Here we were asked in passing as the older lady picked up our plates. She asked if everything was okay with our food and I replied honestly 'no, actually, the batter was terrible, it was soggy and the peas were put on top of it'. She looked surprised and said 'oh, I am very surprised, his batter is always excellent', then decided the placing of the peas was the cause...I explained that the batter was limp and wrinkly everywhere not just where the peas were...she said 'do you want something else'? Well, no, not know we have finished our food and been sat her for ages...maybe a refund would have been better? I definitely will not be ordering the fish here again if I should be back to visit.

I'm just back fromm a 2 night stay with my partner and it was the perfect start to getting back out into the world. Our room was a 4 poster with all the character you could wish for. A warm traditional style rather than a cold business formula. It is a listed property with stairs, different ceiling heights, little quirks and everything you'd expect from a building of over 250 years. The staff were welcoming, friendly and couldn't do enough, without being overbearing. The bar is a lovely, well stocked, traditional area with a nice outside area. We were fortunate enough to have the weather to enjoy a drink and some food, from the amazing pizzeria next door, outside. We had the full English breakfast both mornings, which was cooked fresh to order and was spot on each time. Location wise it was perfect for what we wanted. We will be back, many times I think.

Famous Sunday Roast disappointing very disappointing. Choice of Beef or Chicken not stated on menu. Booked for 3pm so they knew we were coming. Ordered food I had the Roast Beef my friend had the sausage and Mash. Food arrived quickly. Plate was warmish, veg Peas and Carrotts were luke warm. No Idea what the Cauliflower was cooked in as was yellow and cold. The roast potatoes were Aunt Bessie's cooked within an inch of its life. Potatoes were hard, dry and burnt and cold. Surprised the owner dare to bring them out to me inedible. I asked for more gravy also cold made no difference. Asked for another serving of potatoes that had NOT been overcooked. No better. No apology or asked if food was OK. The table was chipped and the cutlery and plates that swamped the teeny tiny table were sticky and claggy and felt dirty. Owner was polite, ut did not look the part I presume the boyfriend had cooked this dreadful Sunday toast with his eyes shut and I had to pay 9.50 for the privelidge. My friends food fine. Service good polite staff, but the change of owner shows as the food quality very poor. Owner said its because we came in so late?? The food should be as good at 3 as it was??? at 12. Paid the bill and a foreign lady took my payment. No did you enjoy your food or nothing took the money and said that's it!! Not even a receipt was offered. Avoid the Roast dinner! "" run for the hills and they wandered why it was so quiet.. Would not recommend.

Food incredible. Had the best beef and ale pie I’ve had in years . (Nearly Had food envy looking at a mixed grill too.) Food all made fresh so no one should expect fast food here , just generous sized quality food. Staff waiting on the tables ,due to government rulings, were delightful and we didn’t wait long . Maybe if it was busier there would have been a longer wait but I think we should give the staff a break from criticism. They’re working hard in different way during a pandemic . Will definitely be returning, especially for another meal

I visited Mr Grundy's on April 12th which was the first day pubs could open for outdoor drinking in England. Mr Grundy's is a pub located just a 5 minute walk from Derby city centre. I believe you can also stay here however I will not be reviewing that or any previous visits just my visit after the lockdown was eased. Upon arrival we had to walk between full tables to find staff who I asked if I needed to sign in, in which I got a reply of "if we can find the thing". The beer garden is huge however it was totally full all day and was taking 30 minutes to get a drink, this isn't the staffs fault as they were working flat out and it was the first day of reopening. The beer menu is very basic and the price are around the average for the area. Overall just underwhelming really.

We figured we'd just stay in the hotel for the evening and have a bit of pub grub downstairs and get cosy. Ordered their pie and chips, staff seemed confused over the drinks let alone the food. I visited here yesterday with my family, a very hot day so we wanted a pub garden doing food. It was very busy and the staff were very rushed and under pressure. Food took ages in coming and eventually turned up looking ok. However we had ordered a rare steak (one of the most expensive things on the menu) and it came up clearly medium/well done, it hadn’t been rested and was oozing over the plate, we cut it in half and there’s was no pink meat. We took it back very apologetic as we didn’t want to make a fuss and certainly wasn’t what we wanted as it meant we wouldn’t be eating together. Ten minutes later we were presented with another plate with a steak that was most definitely blue! We cut it in half again and the middle was uncooked. I took it back into the bar and spoke to the manager/owner who was rude. Told me that the first steak had been fine and he’d throw it back on the grill! Another 10 minutes passed and a third plate arrived. I don’t know what he’d done to the steak this time, it looked and smelt awful. Not sure if it was off or what but the smell was so bad we had to move the plate away from us. I tried to call the manager over but he didn’t come so I went up to him and told him how upset we were. He then insisted again the first steak had been rare!!! Was all this because he was pissed at us? He walked away with no other comment.

Used to live locally and visit this place quite often, and it was a decent place. Unfortunately it has declined to the point I wouldn't recommend anyone visit.Ate here recently and it was disappointing, but I'd fallen out of the habit of leaving reviews, good or bad, and thought little more of it. Until last night, when we visited for a drink assuming it was still at least a decent real ale pub, and the whole experience made my heart sink.I've always loved scrumpy, so ordered one, as did a friend. Now I know you take your chances a bit with "real" ciders, but if you closed your eyes you'd guess you were sipping on a pint of Sarson's vinegar, it had plain and simple turned bad, really bad. We explained this to the young people staffing the bar, only to be told this is how scrumpy is meant to taste, and would we like some blackcurrant in it to turn it into a snakebite?Ah well. I did try briefly to explain that all drinks, if not stored properly, end up tasting like this, and that the done thing to do when someone near spits out there drink is to pour something fresh. But they didn't offer to replace it, adamantly telling us "other people have drunk it". These other people must be terribly polite, or perhaps ordered it with blackcurrant.Poor food, literally bad ale, and lamentable customer service. It's a shame, at a time when a lot of pubs in the area are being given a new lease of life, that this one has travelled in the other direction.

Yet another place to add to my lists of places never to visit ever again which is a shame because the garden seems like a great place to have a pint (although I'm not sure I'd get served the one I asked for).First of all, I would like to express my deepest sentiment to those who confuse quantity with quality in regards to value for money. If anything, it is disrespect to the consumer. Having plenty of a bad thing on your plate cannot be good. Also if there is a place out there who can guarantee a positive Sunday Roast experience in Derby, do let me know, I'm desperate to find one that is memorable for the RIGHT reasons!I would like to state that I am not a snob or an experienced food critique or someone with high standards. I enjoy every cuisine and dish in the way it is supposed to be. If you are a diner, and you are a GOOD diner, I will sit and enjoy the diner experience. If you are a food truck, I will appreciate your food truck service and food, given that you do it right. If you are a pub and a hotel and you brag about being there for 200 years, your food shouldn't taste like it's 200 years old, but should taste like you have the experience to prepare great food that has survived the competition for 200 years! What's more embarrassing is that I brought my uncle and auntie (who are chefs by the way) for a lovely Sunday roast. So the food: to summarise, food temperature was off, textures were wrong, and while somethings were under-cooked, others were burnt. So it was either too much effort to chew or food you could eat without having dentures on (if I had dentures that is). Yorkshire pudding was burnt. Clearly, cooked before hand, then shoved back in the oven in a tray for too long (I'm guessing this was the case because when we asked for a replacement we were told "they're all like that. Sorryyyy"). I would've been happier with fresh bread and butter instead of brunt & soggy (I know how does that happen) Yorkshire pudding. The roast potatoes: some where crispy on the outside burning on the inside, some were stale and cold. The gravy was cold. The leek tasted watered down probably because it was boiled to death, but also, cold. The beef was not cooked pink (see Old Bell Hotel for a similar experience. Why doesn't Derby like their meat pink???) so we got the pork, which wasn't entirely terrible. It wasn't dry at least, but then again it was swimming in gravy. The beans were not trimmed from their stalks and didn't have the vibrant green colour they should have (I know I make them better and I'm sure you can too) and were hard and tough. So was the kitchen having a bad day? Perhaps. Our service, well...other than apologising for the errors of the kitchen but unable to do anything about it, I can't blame the service for anything. Other than forgetting to charge us for the 4 roasts we had and coming to ask for our card to put the payment through so that our food could come out at the same time, and giving us a full pint (of the wrong ale) instead of a half pint of the right one. The place wasn't busy people. It was not a hard order. We ordered the same meal x4 and 1 beer, 1 ale, 1 coke, and 1 tap water. How are they still there I don't know. But I am certainly not going to give it another try.I thought about taking photos of the food, but I didn't want to offend your vision even though they certainly had no issues with offending not only our eyes, but insulting our taste buds. Nothing about this place is value for money. If you're spending money to buy, prepare, and serve food as I described now, it is a waste of the people sourcing you the food, it is a waste of the earth's resources, and it is an insult to the customer spending hard earned money for a weekly treat!

Stayed in the adjoining hotel (Georgian House) but ate and drank in Mr Grundy's. The food was amazing - Burger night Monday, Steak night Tuesday, Pie night Wednesday, Curry night Thursday and Fish night Friday. The food is awesome. A Rib Eye steak with all the trimmings (including home-made PROPER chips) for £6.95!!! Honestly, you'd be a mug to eat anywhere else. Fantastic choice of beers too - Portland Black, 1914, Sniper, Bullet, Pip Squeak and it gets too numerous to mention. And the staff are knowledgeable, friendly and obviously very proud of their onsite brewery. If you had a bad experience here, I would respectively suggest that you've probably set your sights far too high. I spent three days in Jury's Inn just down the road last year. Paid over a hundred pounds a night for a characterless, unsophisticated, modern hotel, with pre-fab food and a clinical breakfast. I will ALWAYS return here, whenever I am in Derby. I would be an idiot not too, and so would you. Be nice to people and they'll be nice to youThank you to everyone in Mr Grundy's for making my business trip an absolute delight. The food was awful, the drinks were awful and the service was non existent. Reading the reviews on here I am not alone in thinking this. Surely any Manager worth their salt would check online reviews about their business and look to rectify these reoccurring problems but obviously not.

We had been for meals here including Christmas Day until we moved from the area several years ago. We wanted somewhere for Christmas Day but were unsure where to go having only moved back to Derbyshire a few months earlier so we decided to try Mr Grundy's again in the hope that the food, service and atmosphere was still of the same high quality. I was a bit nervous about it as did not want the day ruined especially as we were taking a friend with us, however, I need not have worried one little bit as from the time we arrived to the time we left we received the most courteous service and the atmosphere was very Christmassy and the food was just amazing. The quality and the taste was brilliant and we felt that we had to apologise to the waiter because we had to leave some not because we did not like it but because there was just too much of it.Our friend whose was on her first visit there was absolutely overjoyed and is looking forward to coming again. We will definitely be booking for next Christmas Day and will be popping over there on many occasions in between I am sure. I would definitely recommend it to anyone and my husband says that the beer is great as well as the food.

A party of 8 pre-booked & pre-ordered. No-one knew anything about us on arrival. After 1/2 an hour and a reminder the starters arrived. 5 so called "king" prawns and a scoop of so called "wild" rice. 45 minutes later having had to ask for our table to be cleared, the main course arrived. Totally inedible, leather fish with burnt roast potatoes, burnt parsnips & carrots. A bizarre combination! I sent mine back and was offered sandwiches! After another 45 mins and asking again to have our table cleared pudding arrived. I was accused by Beverley of grabbing her arm when I just touched her for assistance. She also took a work break during serving time to eat with her friends. The establishment is not geared up for eating out - the menu was bizarre - who puts roast pots with fish? We visited last year and the chaos was the same. No change within the year. The cost was FAR TOO MUCH for the poor food and service that we received. Drinking glasses were also dirty!

Mr Grundy’s is an interesting bar open to the public attached to the Grade II listed Georgian House hotel and Restaurant. This is a review specifically for Mr Grundys Tavern which has its own micro brewery, and not the hotel itself as several of the previous reviews seem to confuse the different venues. The bar takes its name from a WWI veteran who lived in the building before it became a hotel. The bar has a fair amount of internal character with plenty of brewing memorabilia and a section of film memorabilia of black and white photos and any pub that incorporates a red phone box scores an extra point from me. The bar had four of the brewery beers on and the Mr Grundy first world war theme carries through to the beer names with 1914, No Mans Land, Flipping Best and Vampyr being available and my half of the 1914 stout was perfectly passable. And then complementing them were a few guests in the form of Slaters Top Totty, Old Speckled Hen, Potbelly Crazy Days and Stockport Crown BestIt was quite dead when we arrived and the small tele blasting out some music video channel seemed to be for the benefit of the bar staff and was out of keeping with the ambience of the pub.As a bar I liked it here and wouldn’t hesitate to return, as long as they kill the tele next time.

After a very hot day out and about shopping in Derby we needed somewhere to relax have a beer and something to eat. The city centre just didn't do it for us as it was busy and very hot but we knew just the place. Mr Grundys on Ashbourne Road. The food is always cooked to order and always fresh and really good, The Steak, mushroom and onion baguette was wonderfull with the steak cooked perfectly, my husband had the Steak and Stilton pie, with meat that was so tender is melted. Being a micro brewery you wuld expect the beer to be good and believe me we were not disapointed. If you are ever in need o somwhere to get good food and good beer this has to be the place.

This was my first time in this traditional old pub , I've passed it on my travels many times but never visited. We booked for Sunday lunch and were pleasantly surprised by the warmth of the staff and the wide range of real ales. We had several tasters before settling on one of their own brews which was as near a perfect pint that you could wish for. We ordered Sunday roasts and the two males opted for the large plate which also included another pint of beer. The meals were well presented and were of very generous portions. There is a lot of character in the place and we passed away two very pleasant hours. They do theme nights during the week and I plan to revisit in the very near future.

It was a Pre-booked Room for large party of about 40 people & Preorder the Meal. Arrived order drinks then told to request what we preordered at the bar. The table of friends I was sitting with went to order their meal I went just after and was told by the barmaid I had to wait for another employee who was taking the food order. When this employee arrived he started to serve drinks & no acknowledgement that I was waiting I waited 20 minutes to be served and only got served due to me moaning at the bar. I preordered jacket with Chilli & Cheese. My friends food was served and they ate their meal and was ordering puddings while I was still waiting for my meal. Friends who went to the bar after me got their food served before me.I waited about 45 minutes on top of the previous 20. I asked if I could have some salad the waitress said she would enquire when she returned she said the Chef said if you want a salad you can pay for one at the bar. I said your not willing to give me some salad after you had me waiting over an hour. I said tell the Chef to keep his salad as that is terrible customer service, and from reading previous reviews the Chef seems to be very arrogant and rude. The food was tasteless and luke warm I ate a couple of mouthfuls and left it so disappointed evening out.Would I go back No Chance. Prefer to spend my hard earned money on good Customer Service.

What should have been a group of people enjoying a birthday bash turned into a poor service and food event - dinner service took way too long 2 of our party did not get their food order and we were accused pointedly of changing our orders but we counterclaimed this by advising the name of the person who took our order some time ago as some of our party have dietary needs - no condiments on table (we were given a seperate room for the venue) everything was very dry and/or overcooked - not impressed

On arriving at the pub I went to greet my party at a table, at this point not everyone had arrived and 2 people had already got themselves a drink. We all decided we were going to wait before ordering. I had only been sat down 3 minuets when a woman came over and asked us if we were buying drinks as we could not stay if only 2 people were drinking. The pub was empty. As a business owner myself I am aware of good customer service and good sales tactics. Asking a large group of people to leave whilst your business is empty and also assuming that they were not going to order is a sure way to rid your business of any customers.Could have approached us with a better mannor. On leaving our table she then went over to the bar and started to talk about us with the bar maid. This made us feel very awkward. Will not be returning. Customers are there to be looked after, not to be shunned.

Came here for dinner early this month and had the Steak and Stilton pie with chocolate fudge cake and ice cream for dessert. The atmosphere within the pub/restaurant is nice with friendly staff. The pie was beautiful with a strong flavour. The 'filling' was served in a small dish with a puff pastry lid to top it off. Along with the pie was served some home cooked fat chips cooked perfectly with peas. The chocolate fudge cake was your bog standard fudge cake that you would expect from any pub but nevertheless it was still extremely tasty. The young waiter (who appeared to be around 16, I didn't catch his name but was tall with long-ish hair) was extremely attentive and served with a smile on his face at all times and was highly deserving of the tip he was rewarded.I would highly recommend Mr Grundy's to people who are willing to walk a bit further out from the city centre for their meals.

Old English type pub serving a good selection of beers/ales which are brewed in their own Brewery. Large beer garden at rear of pub whith plenty of seating and well spaced out. Small car park also at rear. Early bird offers on food and decent menu choice. I visited on a Friday evening (fish night) and went for the fish, chips and mushy peas which was okay but as a previous reviewer stated you do not need salad, either offer salad as an alternative to peas but not both.

Came here with my fiancee and we both ordered the steak and stilton pie with chips peas and salad.Eventually when it finally arrived luke warm there was no salad in sight. I asked the young lad who was on food duty where it was and he looked blanked as if he was stoned. I stated that it clearly says on the menu that it came with salad and he said he would enquire. After a few minutes he then said that "chef said he wasn't prepared to make you a salad."How rude!!I said get a menu as it clearly says it comes with salad.Eventually after stating that according to trades descriptions act they are not giving what they say out, he came with a saucer of a few salad leaves, three pieces of pepper and onion and half a tomato. The pie itself was bland, watery and didn't taste of stilton at all. Food was awful and overpriced. Won't waste money by eating here again.

I ate at Mr Grundys the other night I had the Fish and Chips/Mushy Peas, sorry to say the meal was not very nice the fish tasted slimy and smelt off, the chips were greasy, and to top it off they put salad on my plate as well, salad with fish chips and mushy peas, it had no place to be there(no pun intended) My wife had the Pie which was equally disappointingWould we go back again, the answer is no, the food was poor.

Non existent customer service. They also don’t have anything you want to order - we tried to order a chocolate sundae, cookie dough, milkshake, chocolate fudge cake and was told they were all not available. This was after paying. The entire party had to then choose alternatives they weren’t entirely keen on because we had already paid. I find it hard to believe they didn’t know before. We also witnessed a staff member being quite unkind to another employee who was taking orders, and seating walk ins, telling him off and telling him to wash plates instead of seating walk ins. When our food did arrive, only 2 out of the 3 items came. We waited 25 mins for a Sundae to arrive, when it didn’t we told the staff who said it was coming. It then took 10mins for this to arrive. It really shouldn’t take 35 mins to put some ice cream in a bowl. Youre better off going to Heavenlys down the road. Don’t waste your time here.

The Standing Order is a large impressive wetherspoons in an ornate former bank. There is a very wide range of beers, lager and cider, including six hand-pulled cask conditioned real ales at very cheap prices. The ones we sampled were in excellent condition. The food is good value, the stakes and gormet burgers are excellent. The pub is listed in the camra good beer guide.

Our final visit to the Bonnie Prince before it closes and becomes a Hickory Smokehouse. Great service from the staff as always, especially April. So helpful and makes sure everything is 100% right and everyone is happy. Great to hear we will see her again at the Merlin in the future
