When we arrived we was Greeted at the door, shown to our table, The waiter explained that besides the main menu there was also an eat as much as you like buffet. After ordering drinks we elected the latter. The waiter explained everything about the buffet and what and where to find what we needed. Lovely food, lovely staff Lovely change Well done

Only had take away but great food and service .

We had pompom's and 2 huge baji ( too big) for starters, then ordered our mains which came very quickly. Obviously with the time it took it was just reheated, which was confirmed by the hard chicken. Madras sauce did not taste good and was watery, all curry's were too hot, Jalfrezi and Tikka Masala.Dark and dismal inside, would not go again.

Mid week and a quiet meal. Food fantastic.

Food was lovely. Very friendly. And a nice environment as I was a solo traveler at this restaurant.

Wow another lovely evening with my lady. The service was amazing, the table next to us had a birthday party. Lovely people. Even spoke to the chef who is in his 80s. Jane and I will remember this place .

Such a shame as it is SO difficult to find an Indian restaurant open at lunchtime. I really don't know what happened but we went here for an anniversary lunch. We walked in and had to go and find someone! We sat down and just wanted a jug of tap water with our meal and the jug was filthy. We looked at the menu and the elderly man bought us 2 poppadoms and a tray of chutneys etc. The poppadoms had a strange taste but we were hungry and the onion chutney and lime pickle were tasty. We ordered the set menu which was 2 poppadoms, 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 sides. We ordered vegetable samosas, vegetable pakoras, a naga chicken curry, a vegetable madras, a mushroom rice and a cheese naan. Well the man brought us a mushroom rice, cheese naan, vegetable madras and naga curry along with an additional vegetable curry(?). No starters. The mushroom rice was awful. It was like it had been refried and burnt as it had loads of hard bits. The cheese naan was amazing! Loads of cheese and lovely and hot. The naga curry was missing the naga chillis and was very bland. I asked for some chillis and he brought me a dish of hot sauce which he charged me for. All I wanted was some naga chillis. The vegetable madras was okay but wouldn't order again. I asked about the pakoras and samosas when he delivered the mains and he eventually brought out 2 veg samosas which were very nice. Still no pakoras - we never got these. To be honest we were hoping to have an alcoholic beverage after our meal but were so disheartened with everything we just wanted to leave. The bill was wrong but the younger guy sorted it out and apologised. £33.90 for a rubbish meal means we can't recommend and will not return.

Food was awful very very salty starter being shish keepab and tikka masala starter...garlic Naan had no garlic and was very dry... Madras was more like a vinda loo

Hi guys This restaurant has been about forever, and have been here a number of times over the last 20+ years. Okay, first the decor....I'll be frank it cold use a major update!!!, admittedly you don't eat the wallpaper but even so it hasn't been updated in at least 20 years! The food is admittedly very good! Mixed kebab starter: plentiful and delicious Lamb bhuna: extremely tasty Coconut rice: no complaints Brinjal bhaji: stunning and the star of the show for me. Plain naan: no complaints The above is my staple order wherever I go, and the yardstick for which I measure by!! The service, was again very good, with the staff attentive and very polite (all food served with a smile and not slung at you) So overall....you can see why this place has been about for 30+ years. It does what it does....well!!! The only negative I had was the drinks are on the pricey side at £6+ a pint and its not the most competitively priced, but it younare after a curry in the Drayton area, this is the place to go!!!!!

Delicious food and excellent value.

I've now eaten there twice and was told it was gluten free well that's not the case I had reactions both times. The first time I just assumed it was because I had Ben drinking, this time I had one drink 😅

Had another lovely Christmas experience as usual, food was cooked to perfection, staff friendly as usual, ready to book again for next Christmas, however still look forward to our buffet's on a Sunday or Monday. Happy new year to you and the staff.

Great food, friendly staff. Eat in or takeaway. Unfortunately, it is quite 'not of this time'. It is probably me but I find the atmosphere quite uncomfortable what with the (almost over attentive) service. Don't get me wrong, the service is good and timely, you don't have to wait an age to be attended to (unlike the place up the road). Great food, ¿Too much service? Friendly. I dunno, maybe a bit of musacc?

Always get takeaway from here, never disappointed. So friendly and ready quickly even on the weekends. Had Garlic chicken masala absolutely 10/10 recommend

My baby got sick after we had dinner from here

First of all the food was absolutely abhorrent and tasted disgusting. The waiters were full of attitude and rude. These people are selling their food by the name authentic Indian. It was nowhere around Indian. They're giving the wrong impression of Indian food.

Lovely evening.. felt somewhat rushed on arrival though.. no sooner had we sat down we were asked what we wanted to drink..not even had chance to look at drink menu! Ordered poppadoms and relish and instantly asked if we were ready to order mains!!! Food was great but felt just a tad rushed... Had to ammend final bill as incorrect and staff looked irritated by this..

My first time here and I was very impressed with the service and food I highly recommend you give this place a try.

An amazing and delicate mix of spices that don't necessarily come from any cookbook or masterclass but entirely from traditional experience handed down from generations.

Great food. Good friendly service. Asked for doggy bags and was left to decant food from plates into boxes ourselves. Not sure if we agreed with that, but at least we knew what we were getting.

I realised again, why, last night. Onion bhaji's are like huge cricket balls and delicious, warning, they are so big get one portiin between two! The curry was fantastic and the naan bread was delicious. The also serve bottles of Bangla beer. The decor is like something from the 90's, which is exactly how an indian retaurant should be. I love the Mowchak and will regularly return. Please don't ever change. It is also very reasonably priced.

Each year we book for Christmas day and are never disappointed. Food is excellent and the staff work so hard and are very friendly. Can't wait for this Christmas and we will book as soon as we can, I always pester them to see when we can book! Well done guys and a happy new year.

We've always enjoyed the food here, even ate here New Year 2021/2022. So did the same this year. The staff are pleasant, but the food was really disappointing. My tandoori king prawn starter and sag bhahee was also fine, but okra bhajee was tasteless, I picked a Meal that has lots of flavours in it that I enjoy it also said plus herbs, a strong minty taste overwhelmed the whole dinner. I had one taste and knew for the first time ever, I had to say i couldnt eat it, they changed it for, Tikka masala for me, but that was a weird taste too, very strong coconut, not just coconut milk but actual desiccated coconut. I didn't like it but felt I couldn't say so again, I shared it round the table and everyone said it was very sweet and coconut flavoured. The garlic rice was bland, not that garlicky. On the whole it was a real disappointment. Ths rest of our table thought it had gone downhill, although they ate most of their meals. Such a shame, they must have a new chef.

Opted Vegetarian, steward gone beyond to offer items not on the menu card. Very thankful to him. But the items were moderately tasty not worth the price.

This is the best place in Portsmouth to have a great curry, the service was the best and the food is the best. We had a great night out thank you

Unfortunately the chicken was dry in the dishes during the last visit

Unfortunately I have to give this a 1 star. We have had deliveries from here for a few years and sat in the restaurant had lovely food. On this occasion the food that was delivered was tasteless chicken was chewy fatty and unpleasant and 90% of it ended in the bin. Sorry very disappointed

Sorry for the 3 stars, the lamb madras I ordered wasn't what I would have expected from a highly recommended balti house, the curry itself was OK but lacked flavour, I didn't eat in the restaurant but I will try it again.

I am a vegetarian and usually do not like Indian restaurant in this area as most of them serve very few dishes for us. This one does not have a wide variety either but is better then the rest. The taste is good and the service is brilliant.

Although this place has been going for years and I regret ive never eaten here before, i must say its an amazing Indian restaurant with excellent high quality food. Loads of dishes ive never tried but loved every morsel. Good service, plenty of time allowed bet dishes , which i what we like. Cant wait to go again.

went out for mums 80th birthday meal as she loves a balti.so chicken balti it was.it arrived in a bowl half full looking like chicken stew no taste what so ever dont even think it had spices in it.thanks mowchaks for ruining my mus special birthday

Visited on a Saturday night with friends Arrived with high hopes however soon to be disappointed Thought I was in for a spicy treat when I ordered my chicken bhuna it's arrived like warm and the lack of spice was disappointing more like a chicken stew with some tomato chunks chucked in Wife said her biryani chicken tasted odd, like the meat had been lurking in a freezer for an age Noted the curry award from 2012 on the wall, maybe living on past glories The service was good unfortunately the wine we ordered was supposed blushed but wasn't luckily my wife noticed however waiter opened it so it went back Another order arrives with peppers after we specifically asked for NO peppers The whole place just needs. Shake up

Ordered for a delivery, was told 40 mins for delivery, phoned 10 minutes after delivery was told another 10 minutes phoned 10 minutes later. Took an hour to be delivered, delivered cold

Very disappointing! My food was extremely bland. I've never known a dish (Chicken Masala) to taste like watery slop. Absolutely disgraceful.

This place was good years ago. Recently it is quite simply the most tasteless and bland Indian takeaway I've ever had. The Tikka Marsala was like it had been watered down to the point of no flavour, the Jalfrezi was poor and mostly tastless. A massive let down. Never again!

Welcome return of the buffet after lockdown. The starters were tasty with a good choice of salad, chicken tikka pieces, mini bhaji's, spicy potatoes and dips. Main courses of vegetable curry, masala, and bhuna with pilau rice, the Sag Aloo is to die for, too many onions in the curries for my partner but well worth a visit.

Great meal as always. Prompt friendly service. Good food, always tastes fresh and arrives to the table nice and hot.

Booked a table beforehand as there were a lot of us . The food was excellent & the staff were patient & polite . My only disappointment was that the Chefs buffet at £10.95 wasn’t available that I was looking forward to as I had looked on their website for the menu. I had the chicken biryani instead which was lovely. Recommended restaurant.

Very friendly staff and a great, varied menu with delicious food. Having tried many local Indian restaurants, I can honestly say this is one of the best.

Never dreamt we were going to have such a pleasant experience. I was proven wrong ! We ended up Mowchak because road access to the restaurant we had booked was nearly impossible. We arrived before the restaurant had opened and a very helpful person came by and enquired about our visit. In 2 minutes the restaurant opened and the food was as magical as what Aladdin saw in the cave. The vegetarian selection: exquisite. The non-veg option: par excellence. If you go to this restaurant don’t be under any delusion that you will be able to take home any leftovers. This one ain’t coming home.

Food was OK and the service on a busy Saturday night was unsurprisingly a little slow. However the staff are friendly and beer tasted like it should.

Can’t beat the Mowchak , Service is always brilliant , the food consistently good Had a great meal in here last week Love the coffee liqueur after , nice touch Will be back again next week

Celebrated my sons exam results at Mowchak and the food was excellent. We had the special offer of £10.95 per head for starter, main & rice which I personally think is hard to beat quite simply anywhere. You won't be disappointed.

Great table service and briliant food

Told us our order would be about 45 minutes, 90 minutes later it came with half of it missing. We called up to ask where it was, to be fair they did send the rest of the order out with extras & the delivery guy apologised but by this point it was gone 10pm, 2 hours after we ordered. Appreciate they tried to rectify but basically ruined Friday night celebratory takeaway. We won't be ordering again
