I was so pleased that booked our table well in advance as the restaurant was very busy, management were turning people away all night. We were given a table at the window that looked out over the sea, it couldn't have been nicer. The young girls that were serving in the restaurant certainly had to work for their money. We didn't have to wait too long for our food to arrive and when it did we weren't dissapointed. We will certainly look to eat there again in the future and we would certainly recommend it to friends and family. Well done to all concerned.

Ordered chicken burger and chips. Dinner arrived burger ok but unable to eat the chips as they were small and hard. Waitress asked if everything ok I told her no the chips are terrible. She replied I will inform chef. Expecting her to return with fresh chips but no. A waiter came to clear and asked us about our meal and I explained that we were not happy with the chips we were served. He informed us that there had been quite a lot of complaints about the chips. We decided not to have pudding and asked for the bill. I went to bathroom and my partner paid bill. I expected a reduction due to us complaining but no they charged us full price.

After trying to get into a few places along the seafront and being told nowhere was taking walk ins, we were overjoyed at the warm welcome we received at the Mount Stewart with the friendly staff more than happy to offer us a spot on the terrace. The food arrived really fast and was delicious, we both had the posh fish and chips and then decided to share a chocolate fudge cake which was again lovely. The staff were all super friendly and we felt the food and drinks were really reasonably priced. The lovely position also means there are incredible views to enjoy if you are lucky enough to get a seat on the terrace like we did. We would definitely return.

Entered and was met with a disgruntled gentleman telling us how busy he was and we would have to wait while he cleaned our pre booked table, asked him for a high chair also pre booked… 5 minutes later and still no high chair but he brings out our menu, another 5 minutes and we go and find another member of staff and ask for the high chair as baby is becoming agitated. After 15 minutes someone comes to take our drink order which we decline and for the third time ask for the high chair. After 20 minutes we go and see what is going on only to be told all high chairs are in use despite us pre booking and specifically requesting one. Needless to say we had to leave and spend our money elsewhere. Staff had an awful attention to detail

Decided to eat here for dinner whilst staying in Portpatrick. The location is great-worth the walk up the hill and the interior of the restaurant is very very nice. As for the food- all of the meals were quite frankly faultless! Absolutely lovely and the menu selection was great also. In addition to that all of the staff were excellent! Do not hesitate to go and eat here, you won’t regret. Highly recommended 10/10

We love the Mount Stewart and have been visiting for a meal for many years. We cannot understand why we are not allowed in for a meal with our dogs anymore. Our dogs have always been very well behaved and as there is a restaurant, surely the bar area should be dog friendly. When we visited Portpatrick today, it was so busy and there were many people with dogs, eating at other hotels whilst the Mount Stewart was completely empty, this must tell you something.

We had booked a special family meal to celebrate a significant anniversary several weeks before the date. We were in contact with Diane, the manager, on several occasions to organise certain aspects which we were told were no problem, and were offered a couple of extras we hadn’t asked for that would make the meal more special. We were in contact several times as we had to chase up confirmation of our arrangements from the hotel when they hadn’t got back to us. Unfortunately a fortnight before our meal, one of our party suddenly passed away so we had to change the number of people dining. When we arrived for the meal the hotel claimed no knowledge of the special arrangements they had offered and had seated people where we had been told we would be seated. When we tried to speak to management about the changes we were informed that there was no way we could have been offered the arrangements. We tried to speak to Diane when we saw her quietly trying to leave, then we decided to try to enjoy the meal as we had put alot of effort into organising the whole thing, combined with everywhere else being too busy to accommodate our number and also having had the funeral very recently. At the end of the meal we asked about the possibility of a small discount (5 - 10%) as they had not delivered what had been agreed upon. We also said that the food and service were good and were happy to tip the staff, but felt we should be given a discount due to them not providing what hey had promised. We were told very bluntly that we could not get a discount and when we asked to speak to the manager we were told she had left. We said we would like to speak to her and were told she was on her way back. Finally her partner arrived, who proceeded to act threateningly towards those of us who had stayed to sort this including myself, my sister, her 15 year old son and my father, a pensioner. He refused to listen to us, threatened us and said that we had bombarded Diane with demands (we had contacted her on several occasions, usually because she hadn't got back to us to confirm our requests), we had also supposedly 'humiliated the waiting staff' (a lie, we had been friendly and chatty with them), and mainly to accuse of us lowering our number of diners without them knowing. When we informed him that we had informed the hotel a week prior that our number had changed because my sister's husband had very recently died, we were told that this 'wasn't his problem', he then blamed my sister for subjecting her son to the abuse he was giving us. Eventually we were told we could have a discount as long as we never returned to the hotel or it's environs ever again, an agreement, that after this experience, we are more than happy to oblige.

We spent a lovely evening at the Mount Stewart hotel. Food was delicious and served on the terrace with spectacular views of Portpatrick Harbour. When the sun went down we retreated to the champagne bar where we were entertained by a wonderful pianist. He happily played requests from his extensive repertoire and it was just a joy to sit back and enjoy his music in such tasteful and comfortable surroundings. The young staff were a credit to the owners. Look forward to visiting again when we manage back.

Booked this in advance of our holiday enthused by online menu and photos. Unfortunately only 2-3 tables in the bar and restaurant have the view needless to say were stuck at the back of the narrow restaurant with no view. The atmosphere was not convivial and the staff were not particularly engaging. We were very disappointed on arrival to be told that there was no lamb and no lobster available which removed 5 of the main items with no alternative options offered. Decided to treat ourselves to cocktails to deflect from the disappointment of the lobster to be informed they were not serving cocktails since they were “too busy”! The service was terrible despite the restaurant being 2/3rd full. We’re not asked how our meal was during the main course and the plates were removed with a considerable amount of food left without comment. No one came back to offer us more drinks after our arrival order.Starters were nice but the main course burger was just a very processed dense slab of meat not what we had anticipated. Sorry, nice location but would not recommend based on our experience.

We booked the Mount Stewart for their new spa package. On a whole the thing was just awesome. We were greeted and shown to a beautiful room that was decorated impeccably with a free standing bath, large couches, and an amazing view too...We went down and had possibly the best meal I have ever had, the Mixed grill was just awesome. The sweets and all else were superb to say the least! The quality, taste and service was out standing...Then after a good rest we went to the spa, a personal hot tub for us pair to relax in, it was exactly what you need to end the night. There was a sauna, being honest it looked awesome, but did not use it as was ready to snooze after the massive meal, relaxing hot tub then on to the massive bed to relax. (We actually sneaked back down to the hot tub for another shot) sorted by Jack as it was free again... why not eh x On while the experience was fantastic, the staff were awesome and I Will definitely be back. PS the mixed grill is a fair dish, but you know all us old men will defo give it a go...Diane, Jack, Ian and all are just fantastic... Thanks again

We had been recommended by fellow travellers to eat here. It is certainly the most stylish venue in the harbour area. Although they, like everyone, are offering a reduced menu, we enjoyed the food very much. Take mNote, main courses are large,! I can recommend the Chilli prawns to start, and the goats cheese with beetroot and crispy bacon. The chicken and mushroom crepe was substantial, as was the chicken, bacon pasta bake.

Credit is due to its beautiful location and views, however everything else was disappointing. The staff appeared unenthusiastic when warm communication and a smile gones a long way. The food came out very quickly in about 15 minutes which made us question it's freshness as it was scorching as if it has been microwaved. My fish and chips were supposed to come with 'homemade tartare sauce', which when I asked where it was the waitress said she'd provided packeted tartare sauce on the table, so it wasn't as described on the menu. The fish was a bit soggy and chips tasted a bit like frozen chips, not worth £12 when it's better for less at a chippie. My partner's lamb did taste good but we wondered how fresh it was considering how quickly it came out and how hot it was! The menu should be updated to freshly cooked food to order. The decor could really do with an update round the bar area where we sat as it seemed like a mish mash of an olde pub, unpleasant blue lighting and tacky modern furnishings. It didn't have a succinct vibe. Update the food quality, the waiting staff enthusiasm and the decor in the bar area at least and it will be a winner!

Booking - Booked by telephone in advance, but told to book dinner much nearer the time which i did. Parking - Available but at night very busy and we were blocked in - though we luckily did not need the car,Arrival - Manager booked us in, no info provided ref check out, breakfast, local area etc. Room - Lovely and we paid extra for a sea view, so even better. Although the room was spacious and lovely there were a few, small areas that could be improved for a 120.00 a night. Both saucers, and tea pot were chipped. The cups were not matching and there was no decaff or sweeteners. (I did ask for some, but was told they did not supply, I was given a mug when i asked). There were no biscuits and no bottled water, although there was a mini bar where you could purchase some and other items. The lamp did not work and the room very dark. (The lamp was fixed when i reported it). Even when fixed you were not able to read in the evening due to how dark the room was. There was an iron burn on the carpet, but in fairness i wouldn't expect them to change the carpet for that. There were no tissues by the bed. No information provided in the room ref timings and local area or wifi - just little personal touches would be nice.Bathroom - Beautiful with roll top bath. Robes and slippers provided. The water roasting so be careful. The bath mat was paper and my hubbie slipped when coming out the bath although did not injure himself. Three bulbs out of the five were out in the bathroom chandelier. Towels very thick and fluffy.Wifi - There is none, and the code provided will not work. I went downstairs to ask for the code, but no luck. I asked later at the bar and they gave me the same code and when questioned explained that the wifi was poor in the room we were in. So obviously the Smart TV was useless.Hot Tub - Noticed a room with this but a sign said booking required. This was not explained in room or on checking in. It would have been an option but was not aware this was available. I do not know if this would be more money.Dinner - Pre booked as requested, but as we went to dinner we noticed signs up giving prices for BBD or BB, this would of worked out cheaper for us, but this was not explained or offered on booking over the phone or on arrival. We were originally seated in the conservatory which was a little chilly and very empty. We did move into the main seating area, with no bother, which was much better, with a lovely roaring fire, a traditional decor and people. Dinner was totally amazing and no faults what so ever. The steak was like butter and wonderful. The service from the waiters were just as good. They looked smart and attentive at all times. Yes a little pricey but to be expected and a treat so no complaints there.Entertainment - This was a gentleman playing the piano, but not in the room you eat, Perhaps a little wasted in my opinion, but that could be due to space?Atmosphere - A little lacking and if i am honest i felt a little uncomfortable. We went into the village and had a great night, where live music was being played.Sleep - Great and big, comfy bed.Breakfast - Very, very disappointing at 12.00 a head, that was pre-booked. No one to seat us, so made our way to conservatory and sat at pre-laid table. Waited for approx 10-15 mins before being seen by waitress. No decaff available. There was no fruit, yogurt, pastries, breads etc, only cereal, OJ and AJ available. Breakfast was a set menu where we had Mount Stewart breakfast. Not great and a very average to small portion. I forgot to take a picture. Jam, marmalade etc were your basic, plastic, packaging Bookers produce, Again for 12.00 a head not the quality you would expect. Bread was not homemade but your normal loaf.Overall - A lovely, hotel with a great location. Dinner out of this world. Attention to detail and friendlier more informative staff/manager would be appreciated for such a high price. Breakfast i would NOT recommend.Reading past reviews - majority very good. I note that breakfast has gone up 4.00 per person in under a year. I also see the wifi issue has not been addressed in over a year either.

Stayed for 3 nights with friends and had an enjoyable stay. The hotel is in a great location with outstanding sea views from most of the windows. The bedrooms are spacious and pleasantly decorated but feel their is a slight lack of attention to detail in some areas of the hotel. In general the staff are very helpful and freindly, especially Jack, who helped with organising a table for our first evening meal, and extra pillows for my partner later that night. Both evening meals were fantastic with plenty of choice on the menu. The hotel has a lot to offer to its guest with lovely seating area outside to enjoy the view. This must have one of the best locations in town...albeit at the top of quite a steep hill (there is limited car parking), the views across the town and out to sea, especially evenings/sunsets are not to be missed. There is a lovely outdoor terrace which makes the most of this situation.Inside there is a formal restaurant plus a bar area, also serving meals. Good selection to choose from. The main disappointment was that my ‘hot’ meal arrived on a COLD plate, and the steak itself was not particularly hot either, Flavours were good, but the meal was presented with a casserole dish of chips! Mountainous, ever for two people. A bit of a waste, as far too much...better to reduce the quantity, and advise people more is available should they wish.Staff helpful and reasonably efficient, though on the evening visiting the place was ‘jumping’ and staff were rushed off their feet, hence service suffering somewhat as a result, Had to ask a couple of times for menus and the bill!Overall though this is good place to dine, though booking probably best, particularly at weekends as this is a popular establishment,

Whilst staying in one of the apartments attached to the hotel, we ate here 3 times, and on each occasion the food was great, and for the quality a really good price. Cajun Salmon and Posh Fish and Chips were both excellent (the latter at just £9 for a really large portion), the steak burger was really tasty and Scampi & Chips was very good.Only disappointment was the mussels, whilst tasty were small and a number of broken shells. Service from the young team was excellent and other restaurants in the town would do well to match this.

Six members of our family had a celebration dinner here, and on arrival were all quite impressed by the décor and cleanliness of the place. We were immediately shown to our table in the conservatory, and soon after our drinks order was taken. The drinks arrived very quickly and we then ordered our meals. Now the staff are all polite and efficient, but interaction with them was limited to say the least. There was a certain ‘air’ and ‘pretentiousness’ about them that didn’t make you feel like valued customers. The starters were soon brought to the table, and the night continued with courses being cleared and brought out with military precision, but no-one ever came to the table after commencement of a course to ensure that everything was okay – once a course was delivered that was it until the dirty plates were cleared. The starters were all lovely – the mains on the whole were the same, except for the pizza which was not good value for money, poorly prepared/cooked and not all that tasty – the sweets however were all poor value for money and most were not of a good standard, and nearly all of the party agreed that we should have given this course a miss. Now one might say why did we not complain – the reason was that it was a family celebration and no-one wanted any upsets or arguments to spoil the evening.

This is our 3rd visit to the Mount Stewart and we keep hoping it will improve, however, the best thing about this restaurant is the view. We booked a table and asked for the window table and for the 3rd time there were people at the table we reserved. We ordered starters & mains and only one starter arrived. We advised that 3 starters were ordered and then had to wait for the other 2, by this time my husband had finished his starter! The food was mediocre and we had to go find someone to get the bill....even though there were 2 people behind the bar watching what was going on. As I mentioned this place is great for a cool drink on a nice day with lovely views but they have to get the service and a good chef to compliment the beautiful surroundings.

Sunday lunch - a wet and windy day. Still, there are views over the North Channel to die for. The whole place has been re-furbished in a modern and fresh style. Carefully sited tables maximise the views; VERY practical well thought out layout. Staff attentive but not over-keen. It was quiet and sometimes there was no-one in the bar where we ate. Nice menu and we chose seafood - the platter options were great and a very clever idea of "mix and match". Well cooked, nicely sauced and good portions. I hope the new set-up is a success and it adds to Portpatrick's choice of places to eat . We would definitely go back to the Mount Stewart , for quality and quantity of meals added to it's location makes it worth while doing the climb up and watching the sun-set .

The important bit was the food was excellent. What made it extra special was the presentation, fabulous. In addition, the atmosphere and staff were top notch, highly recommend it.

We popped into the bar here a few times during a weeks stay in Portpatrick. We always received a warm welcome from all of the staff. The beer and wine was lovely, Belhaven Black my personal favourite, and was enjoyed whilst enjoying the fantastic view overlooking the Irish Sea, harbour and village. We also visited the new and very impressive restaurant. The food was very good value for money but more importantly was all delicious. We visited this establishment several times last year and were always impressed by the pleasant, friendly and helpful staff. This was still the same this year so we are already looking forward to returning next summer.

Visited here last week and was very impressed with the recent changes. Very nicely done, tastefully decorated dining room with gorgeous views across to Belfast. Food was delicious and staff very accommodating as there was 7 of us. Lovely hanging rattan chairs outside to enjoy the terrific views over the sea, lovely on a nice day!

I was last in The Mount Stewart some years ago before the extensive remodelling of the Hotel. I went today for lunch at 12 noon. It is gorgeous to look at (a lot of research has gone into selecting the furnishings and decoration) and there are sea views from the new extension. The food is excellent as is the staff. Don't miss it if you are in Portpatrick.

Had not visited here for sometime however on the recommendation of Massimo we decide to go there for lunch. Greeted by excellent staff we were seated in position "A"in the new extension overlooking the sea. Being honest I thought looking at the lunch menu with no 2/3 course deals on was a little expensive. And then boom! Our fish & scampi lunches came in exquisite detail, freshness and lovely service with a smile from the young waitress who was very attentive to looking after us. Beautiful surroundings, service and food to die for which I would most actively encourage others to visit! Thanks Massimo

We visited Portpatrick on the Easter weekend and even though the town seemed quiet on Good Friday, the restaurants were booked up. The Mount Stewart fitted us in if we didn't mind sitting on the big table in their private dining area. This was fine with us so we were taken through into a very pleasant and stylish dining area. The staff were all extremely friendly and attentive. I had a Cajun prawn starter and the burger from the specials and enjoyed both. The hotel/restaurant has a fantastic view out to sea and a good atmosphere. I'd happily go back to the Mount Stewart if I visit Portpatrick again.

We have been to Mount Stewart twice within the last fortnight and this newly refurbished restaurant/hotel is fantastic. The food was delicious and well presented. The staff so friendly and efficient! This was two of the best meals we have had for a long time. There is other really lovely places to eat but this exceeded our expectations and the cost was very reasonable suitable for everyone. On our first visit we were offered to view the newly refurbished ensuite bedrooms, wow they are amazing and so welcoming, wouldn't hesitate to stay there but we do stay up at the Mull of Galloway but you never know we might book in for a weekend as you really feel you ate away on holiday here.We viewed the lounge bar as well where you can eat as well or enjoy a beveridge or try one of Massimo's special cocktails! Lovely open fire very welcoming. Will be back very soon! All the best for the future to Mount Stewart, the refurbishment has made this a very desirable place to stay, eat or go for a night out.Diane & John

We went back to Mount Stewart after a long absence and out of interest to see the refurbishment and try the food. Not disappointed and must congratulate them on the improvements they have made and still maintaining the cosy atmosphere. The standard of Décor is very high and a lot of thought has gone into it. Well Done.If you are fish oriented, you will not be disappointed as the quality and standard is very high. Large Menu with good choice, could maybe do with one or two meat dishes without spices . We will certainly be going back in near future.

Visited several times for meals, both in the bar & restaurant. Owners exceptionally nice people. Food always excellent, fresh, variety to choose from, presented well & tasty. Christmas Day meal perfect, most recently had Mother's Day meal, set menu but plenty choice, again food beautiful. Speciality is the seafood pancake which is very filling but then all their portion sizes are generous. New conservatory & refurbished restaurant decorated to a high standard & tastefully modern furnished, beautiful views from the conservatory. Prices reasonable. New addition to the staff is a popular local bar manager/ cocktail waiter Massimo who is a pure gentleman & a real asset to this family run establishment. My only disappointment on my last visit was lack of service, table wasn't ready on arrival & because restaurant was busy there was no where to sit whilst it was getting set up, didn't like table facing the wall either & tucked away in the conservatory meant staff not readily available & several times I had to get up from my table to look /ask for things plus service was slower than I've previously experienced, appreciate it was a busy day & perhaps victims of their own success but a little bit more attention would have been appreciated. Gutted not to rate 5 stars

Difficult to post this review as been going to Mount Stewart fior more than 20 years and know the owners however, attended with my wife and Grandaughter on Monday night. The food offered was horrible re heated frozen chips along with very poor quality fish and scampi. Even the starter of haggis tower was just smothered in sauce. At end of meal when the young waiter lifter our three quarter still full plates and asked how the meal was and we explained how poor it had been he just stated "oh well sorry about that" can only think that neither Diane or Graeme the owners were present.Numerous other places to go to eat please avoid Mount until it improves.Just not good enough.

We went on holiday to Portpatrick with friends. We met the first night at Mount Stewart, we had sandwiches and chips for 24 of us. Staff here are very friendly and welcoming. We had breakfast for 14 the next day and we ate their two evenings for dinner. The food is delicious, reasonably priced, wines and beers are good too. Children and families are welcome. Sitting outside there are wonderful comfy seats and watching the sun set over the sea you could be anywhere in the world. Perfect setting. Would definitely recommend Mount Stewart. Thanks for a lovely holiday.

Have been here many times and it never disappoints. Up for lunch today with hubbie, son, his fiance and their Wee dog. A beautiful day and although not busy when we arrived found it difficult to get a large enough table to accommodate the four of us. Waited over an hour and a half for a couple to leave a large 6 seater table. Only alternatives were small drinks table which wouldn't hold lunch and drinks for two even if we put a couple together. Having said that the service was good and the food delicious. COD n chips, mussels, ploughmans and a lovely egg and cress salad with trimmings. Will definitely be back before the end if our holiday. The issue of the tables would have been resolved if the couple at the 6 seater table had manners enough to see there was a larger group and offered up the table.

My wife and I had a walk to this restaurant on a particularly warm day in Scotland, so was very impressed when we reached it at the fantastic views over the irish sea from the very comfortable decking at the front of the restaurant, so we decided to sit there and enjoy the view. we just decided to have lunch, so had the seafood pizza to share ,it was fresh and baked to perfection, so with that and the views and the lovely weather, it was a great afternoon. what a great find this restaurant was.

Enjoyed a fab meal with family, 1st time we had been there since they introduced their new menu, pasta del mar was lovely, battered fish was huge and delicious. Pizza looked great as did the haggis stuffed chicken. Retired to the beautifully decked out sun terrace after lunch to enjoy a bottle or 2 of Prosecco in the sun. Fab afternoon out.

Turned up here on spec and at first, it all appeared to be going wrong. No tables set in the restaurant; no lights on. Asked if food was being served - yes. Asked if we could use the restaurant, and yes, that would be OK. CD of classical music put on that kept jamming. Lovely waitress told us that the new menu meant that a few of the dishes weren't available.By this stage, I have to say that it was tempting to just get up and leave, but we decided to go for the gambas pil pil followed by the fish and chips. The prawns were a mix of a couple of large prawns mixed with a larger amount of standard prawns in a good butter, spring onion and chilli sauce. The fish and chips were wonderful. To quote my wife, who is very picky about batter (I.e. She leaves it completely about 80% of the time, with only the crispest upper part being eaten the rest of the time), the place really knows how to make batter. The fish was a good sized, beautifully cooked, and the chips and mushy peas were also good. One down side - I asked for an orange and soda, which came as a squash and soda. Luckily, it was so weak as to be drinkable.

Been to Portpatrick many a time and eaten at all the usual haunts down by the harbour, so decided to venture up the steep hill(on recommendation by striking up conversation with a random local) to the Mount Stewart. Phew! Once hill transversed we came upon a nice terraced area leading through big front door to a nicely decorated quaint snug wee bar/restaurant. Went to the bar for a drink first and was served by a young pleasant girl who informed me she was too young to serve drinks and fetched a chef from the kitchen while apologising-no problem to me as I've heard about the owners lack of organisation from same local. The Chef was someone who I recognised from my hometown in Ayrshire and duly had a good chat with him for a wee while as my wife and kids looked at the menu. Anyway the young pleasant girl duly took our order. I had the Seafood Pancake and my wife the Beer battered Cod, the weans had burger baskets. The seafood pancake was to die for! Plentiful fish and the sauce omg! The wife also raving about her massive plate of fish and chips with fresh tartare sauce. If I read the reviews before we came up the hill we would have been put off. I can only think the place gets a lot of stuffy people because what we experienced was good service(although too young to serve beer) and brilliant food! So brave the hill-or drive up! Simply wonderful!! Next time al be trying that Cod!!!

Last Monday afternoon we went for a car run to the far South West corner of Scotland. It is many years since we visited that district. On the way, we stopped for short while at Girvan and when there watched the historic paddle steamer the Waverley making her only call of the season at the breakwater pier at the river entrance She was quite well filled but I overheard a few people saying how much they'd have liked to have experienced a cruise on it( it was going round Ailsa Craig)but they hadn't booked. This was most unfortunate as advance booking for that attraction is seldom necessary, and one can pay on board at time of travel. I understand the Waverley has now departed form her native Clyde and for the next 5 or 6 weeks will be giving pleasure trips on the South Coast of England , and then on the Thames. Perhaps it might be wise to pre book in that area. After our time in Girvan we drove on down the coast and enjoyed seeing several pleasant looking villages on the way , and we drove through the town of Stranrear, where the ferries to Northern Ireland used to-- until just a few years ago- leave from. Nowadays they use a new large purpose-built terminal about 6 miles nearer to the destination they serve. While we were most impressed with everything about Stranraer-- nice looking houses and shops etc we were actually horrified to see the eye sore of the deserted former terminal railhead .How that spoils the look of an otherwise attractive town at the head of Loch Ryan. The gem of our afternoon-- just under 100 miles from the big city-- was what on such a lovely afternoon looked just perfect was the village of Poprtpatrick.' We had a lovely walk all around the village, which was very busy with people making the most of the lovely warm sunny day. Many were enjoying a meal or drink outside some of the hostelries around the bay. While a few kids were in the water while their parents sat on the sandy shore watching them. We decided to walk up a hill and saw a nice, attractive looking hotel where there was a nice restaurant This was the Mount Stewart . After placing our order inside we sat in the veranda outside, where there were lovely views over the North Channel, which was like a proverbial mill pond that day( not sure what it might have been like in a bad winter day though!)All the food we had was beautifully served by a most pleasant young waitress. For our main courses we both ordered a gammon steak ( as we had seen other people eating them and they looked great). After a few minutes the pleasant young waitress came out and apologised that the chef had only one gammon steak left , so we ordered something else for one of us. although it was slightly more expensive we didn't care. Over all, the entire meal was just perfect and what really touched us was that when we went to pay, the management insisted that, as it wasn't what we initially ordered, they wouldn't hear of charging us for the more expensive main course.. Is that not an excellent PR exercise on their part? And they still wouldn't take the additional money from us. After a really enjoyable late afternoon we had a lovely drive home with the evening sun beginning to set over Ailsa Crag. We certainly will go back to the Mount Stewart next time we venture to that area .Roll on next Spring. We goat the impression that the restaurant is popular with locals and with people staying in the nearby caravan site
