Nice pub and very unique we had a lovely waitress called Ruby a very professional and friendly young lady a credit to the establishment. The food was nice rather large portions to much for my wife but no problem Ruby boxed the half of the roast beef sandwich for us to take away. Quite difficult to park hence the 4 stars.

I'm sure we've been here before and enjoyed it, but it seems to have gone downhill of late. We went on a Saturday and we should have known it was wrong from the start. They tried to overcharge us for the drinks before we'd even sat down and we should have cut our losses and left then. The food took forever to come and when it did it was served on cold plates by a disintrested waitress. The guy who took our order had obviously been drinking as he was slurring his words and hard to understand so that's probably where it went wrong, but we didn't want to cause a scene and complain. It's just not worth it. The payment at the end didn't go smoothly either. They'd again got the drinks wrong and there seemed to be confusion about what we'd actually had to eat..(not much because we left most of it) not sure if we'd been mixed up with another table but the young barmaid was obviously unfamiliar with the till. So with poor service and cold mediocre food (how hard can it be to get a burger right chef?) I don't think we'd go back. There's far better places in town than this.

Yesterday my elderly and quite frail Mum (Pat), decided to take herself off on the train to Knaresborough for the afternoon. On returning, she told us about the lovely experience she had had. She’d exhausted herself walking and called at Mother Shipton Inn only to ask for help with a taxi back to the station (she’d not taken her phone). Instead of just helping call a taxi, the very charming landlord Tony (my Mum's description), and his wife Sam, sat her down to rest, offered her a drink and even a menu. They then treated her to a lovely crispy seafood pancake, for which payment was refused! The kindness and generosity shown to my Mum by Tony and Sam, in the middle of a very busy Sunday service, is something very special. It speaks volumes of them as people, and it certainly will make me visit and recommend them. Thank you!

Lovely food, inviting atmosphere and attentive staff. With everything that's going on in the world, it's nice to finally get back to a little bit of "normal". Had a lovely visit meeting a friend for an afternoon bite to eat, after being apart since October last year. The member of staff who was catering for us went the extra mile to ensure that it was a comfortable and welcoming environment, and made sure we had everything we needed; even instantaneously replacing a fork for me, after I haphazardly dropped it on the ground. Thank you for making us feel so welcome, I look forward to our next visit.

Great place for a family meal. We have a challenging 11 year old fussy eater but he is always accommodated well at The Mother Shiptons Inn. The pies are to die for but Sam the chef is really adventurous in not just doing the usual pub grub with specials such as partridge with risotto, kerala butternut curry and lobster among others. Tony is a great host and the bar staff are amazing too especially Ollie.

We had a fantastic Christmas Day Dinner at the Mother Shiptons Inn. All the staff were really welcoming for all our family and the dogs. All the covid guidelines followed and a beautiful six course dinner. Unfortunately, my mum was due to eat with us but with being vulnerable she couldn't make it so the Mother Shiptons did her and her husband a take away Christmas Dinner instead. We look forward to coming back again soon.

Even offered to reserve a car parking space for us!We walked and the went for lunch on a Friday. What a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere immediately as you step into the place. Staff are welcoming and relaxed. Lighting is low and atmospheric and dogs are welcome. The beer was good and the food excellent. We booked a table here as it was close to our accommodation. We found the menu wide ranging with plenty of choice. There were four in our party and we all enjoyed the food ordered. Equally, we found the service to be excellent and we never had empty glasses. At end of night, we were puzzled to get a bill for just over £100 (starters and main course for four, plus around three beers each), to be pleasantly informed that the pub was continuing with the Government eat out scheme off their own back. In spite of Covid restrictions meaning we had to stay on our table, the pub had a good atmosphere. So much so, we returned for the final night of our stay in Knaresborough.

We reserved a table here for Sunday lunch, just as well as particularly with the current restrictions it was full. And no wonder. We needed a dog friendly stop, not only was our GSD welcome he was given his own snacks on arrival. We sat at a table previously owned by Guy Fawkes. Who doesn't love a bit of proper history. And the young staff were universally fab, warm, courteous and just spot on. The guvnor was in and clearly proud of his guys and gals. Mrs Guvnor is I believe head chef, the food is of course cooked to order and well worth the associated wait. Now I only had fish and chips. I love good fish and chips and have eaten at most of the 'best fish and chips in Britain' restaurants, or certainly in England. Many times the dish is good, but I can't recall a fish and chips meal that stands out as much as this. Unbelievably good. How is that even possible? The other meals ordered were equally well received. We stopped here on the way up to the Lakes, it's that convenient for the A1(M). What an alternative to a normal motorway stop.

We visited this pub during a day out to Mother Shipton’s Cave and the town of Knaresborough. As a party of three, we ordered two Fish Finger Sandwiches, one steak sandwich and two portions of chips between us. The food was delicious (especially the gravy); everything was ‘homemade’. The staff were friendly and helpful and our food didn’t take long to arrive. Not bad prices either. Would definitely recommend visiting this place for lunch, as the food outlets just over the river were packed full with long queues outside. On the first day after ‘lockdown’ we visited our favourite pub in Knaresborough. Great friendly service and beautiful building and location. For a starter, my wife chose the seafood pancake that was served piping hot and she thoroughly enjoyed it. I had the pigs cheeks with chorizo and sauté potatoes. Unbelievably good. Very tender and not greasy. For our main course we both chose fish & chips. We regularly eat this here and it never disappoints. Perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. Staff here are very friendly and make good customer service a priority. They manage to strike the balance between professionalism and friendly informality very well. Something that is lacking in most pubs. The beer is good too. We enjoyed Timothy Taylor Landlord but there are usually three others real ales on handpump, and a full range of other drinks/beer/wines available. Highly recommend this pub either for meals or just for a drink. Great beer garden overlooking the river.

Lovely friendly welcome, although menu wasn’t vast there was enough choice to suit all tastes. Service was impeccable, food hot, tasty and plentiful, gravy with the pie, best I’ve had. Definitely recommend and even have selection of games to entertain all ages.

The food was well done although there was quite a wait to get the order taken and for the food to arrive.

We dropped in without booking and had a delicious meal of coconut crusted chicken and a lamb and mint pie. Must mention the superb vegan brownie and peanut ice cream. Service was excellent too, with very friendly and polite staff.

It was the second visit with friends from Scotland. I had a sirloin steak - more than I could eat! The others enjoyed lamb. A bit cramped and parking a problem, but otherwise fine

Things do go wrong especially in busy places. It’s not what goes wrong but how it is dealt with that’s important. The staff dealt with my issue quickly and genuinely, basically they were great and the issue resolved so that it did not spoil our meal. So thank you to the staff and we both eventually enjoyed our meals.

We went into the pub on a very wet Friday just before they finished serving food. You could tell they had been busy as most tables still had plates & glasses to clear. The young waitress & landlord were very accommodating. We didn't have to wait long for our food. The fish & chips were lovely.

After a beautiful walk, we called in here for a drink and ended up staying a couple of hours. The atmosphere was lovely. We sat next to the log fire and had a really great afternoon.

It’s not often I feel compelled to write a review after eating out but tonight’s meal was an exception. We hadn’t booked but were warmly greeted and given a choice of tables. The menu and daily specials were explained to us and we were given time to make our choices. The food was homemade, freshly cooked and plentiful. Vegetables were perfectly cooked and everything was well seasoned. The staff were attentive and friendly. I’d definitely recommend a visit here - we’ll certainly be popping in again before our holiday ends.

If you are seeking some old English history then this pub is well worth a visit. Centuries old and you can feel the history when you step inside. Great local beer also.

I’ve lived in Knaresborough for most of my life and never checked this place out despite lots of great feedback from family and friends. Me and my boyfriend wanted a nice Thursday night treat, locally. After some thought we decided here. The menu is fab and some amazing choices. The service, food and atmosphere were perfect. Staff were super friendly. I’m already looking to plan another meal with the rest of the family!! Thank you :)) x

We came here for Sunday lunch. Pleasantly surprised to be seated and able to order straight away. However the starters took about 40 minutes arrive which although the menu states cooked to order was still baffling as both starters were cold starters so had no cooking time so surely didn’t take 40 minutes to plate up?

The food at this place is just superb, every time we visit. If you’re looking for a top end bistro pub meal in traditional surroundings with a warm welcome, you’ll struggle to do better.

Lovely pub. Go in the side room and play games which are provided whilst waiting for a lovely well presented and cooked meal. A good menu, although the pea soup was a trifle on the thin side my husband thought it was tasty. Fish and chips were had by two members of the party and the fish was well cooked with crispy batter and well cooked chips. I would have preferred ‘mushy’ i.e. proper processed peas rather than crushed frozen peas which were too sweet. My daughter had a veggie tortilla and salad which she said was good. All in all we would return and enjoy the meal. The staff were friendly and helpful and there was some parking at the side of the pub.

We went for the beef sandwich with dipping gravy and cheese and marmalade chutney sandwich. When we arrived they said it would be half an hour before they could take the order but actually within 15 minutes we had ordered, preferred the beef sandwich , lovely steak like beef, we found the cheese sandwich a bit dry. Lovely friendly staff , the pub is in a lovely setting near Mother Shiptons Caves.

Very disappointing, booked on the way back from a week in the Lakes for a birthday meal. We had the dog with us so we were only allowed to book into the ‘tap room’ with a large sports screen and what appeared to be several over exited and loud children running around in their school uniforms. The menu presented was for the quieter and much more pleasant restaurant prices. Needless to say we left and moved to the White Bear next door for a decent, quiet and more pleasant dining experience.
