We were in Ripon & come across the Royal. As it was lunch time we gave it a try. We were not disappointed, one had fish goujons, another goats cheese & one chicken liver parfait. Served by friendly staff & very good food . The place was very busy with locals and visitors. Would highly recommend.

Fantastic Sunday lunch and great service aswell. Initially there was problem with our booking, but the staff were great and got us a table. The Scotch Egg starter went down a treat and the Beef Brisket literally melted in the mouth. The chicken looked and apparently was just as nice.I would definitely recommend the Royal Oak for Sunday Lunch and will be back on my next visit without a doubt.Dog friendly aswell which is an added bonus.

We stayed a couple of nights at the Royal Oak, making it our base for visiting Ripon Cathedral and going round Fountains Abbey. The Cathedral is only a few yards away, at the end of Kirkgate (Ripon's answer to the Shambles at York), and there's a good view of it from the top of the fire escape staircase at the rear of the hotel. The Royal Oak is also very conveniently located for you to dash out after dinner to watch the wakeman blowing the horn in the Market Place nearby at 9pm, Ripon's great attraction. We greatly enjoyed our two nights at the hotel, and we found the staff all very helpful and friendly. My one word of criticism is that our room was very hot at nights, and the winter duvet was quite inappropriate for a still warm September. Unfortunately, as we were on the on the second floor, the window couldn't be opened, and there was no air conditioning system in the room. The highlight of our visit - to end on a more positive note - was Sunday evening's dinner, which was absolutely superb. The pork belly was magnificent. There are not many places in Ripon where you can get dinner on a Sunday evening. But no matter: the Royal Oak's dining room is unbeatable.

This is a very good pub, with good food, friendly staff, good beer and a nice interior. I have visted twice and each time have been impressed. On my first visit I had a bar snack, a scotch egg which was superb. Nothing like a supermarket buffet scotch egg but nearly a meal. On my last visit I had the pigeon starter which was excellent, cooked pink, nicely plated and the pork mains, again really good. I have had worse food served in restaurant with Michelin stars. If I lived closer I would be a regular.

We stopped for a drink here and after a short time felt unsafe in the pub area where table service had been abandoned, no staff were wearing masks to serve food and the doors were not kept open so cutting off ventilation. Visitors did not wear masks when moving around wearing masks indoors. I know it is no longer the law but would have thought through common decency that people might have considered others or at least understood they need to protect themselves.

Lovely little pub, not very pushchair/wheelchair friendly. Lovely staff, fries taste amazing, however the ‘bread’ starter is in fact some really hard dry toast, spoiled my lunch as was looking forward to some nice fresh soft bread. Also paid £5 for the stale dry bread, total rip-off. The bread and the many stairs is why the low review :(

We selected this place from booking.com and were given a reasonable rate for b&b during the post pandemic rush for accommodation so we were really pleased to get away for a few nights break.18th century coaching inn so lots of character. Room was lovely, well appointed. Large sleigh bed was comfortable, ( did mean a bit if a squeeze to get round, but not too inconvenient).Window opened for lots of air during the hot weather which is a must for me. View from the window was of Ripon cathedral which was stunning. Did mean the Westminster chimes on the quarter hour were a prominent feature of our stay! However, this wasn't too much of a disturbance, we kind of got used to the sound which was very comforting knowing we were close to the sanctuary of the cathedral, and anyway, it's easy to close the window if it becomes annoying. Tea and coffee in the room good supply of Yorkshire tea bags.Plenty of hot water for showering. The menu in the restaurant was very good and the place was popular with non residents. Not a problem to get a table ( recommended to book), and we enjoyed our dinner here on both nights of our stay. They had a good selection of real ales and we tried several. Over the 2 nights we tried the Barnsley lamb chop, a dirty burger and chips, rib eye steak, and chicken Caesar salad. All the dishes were delicious, well prepared and presented. Friendly efficient staff.Breakfasts were very good, loose leaf tea in a diffuser which was great and a good selection of breakfast choices in addition to the full Yorkshire breakfast. Welcome was great, we asked about parking and were directed to the pubs own secure car parking at the rear ( combination lock on gate), for total £5 for the 2 nights which was very reasonable.

We visited as a couple on a week day, late afternoon. The restaurant area, over 2 levels, was empty so no issues in getting a table. Initially I was very impressed with the covid as measures - hand sanitizer, all staff masked, staff maintaining a good distance etc. But as we were starting our main course another party came in and for no explicable reason I can think of, the waitress put them on the table right next to us. When every other table was empty?? Neither party could have a conversation without the other listening, and if anyone left the table we were breathing down each others necks. The other party looked as confused as we felt.We decided to skip dessert/coffees, it all felt too awkward, which was a shame because the food we had was delicious. I would have given 5 stars but for this thoughtlessness which spoiled the experience

I went to the oak yesterday with my sister and her boyfriend, we ordered 3 English breakfast and had to wait 35 minutes for them to come out and just disappoint, I had 2 tiny pieces of bacon, 2 overcooked warmed up sausages, a horrid poached egg, a half cooked hash brown, a half cooked full tomato and about 16 beans! The black pudding was ok! I ordered extra bacon and never received it. The toast was cooked on one side and the other side not touched at all and another piece looked like it had seen the toaster for about 3 seconds and jumped onto the toast rack. We were the only 3 people in the place and had to wait that long for what I can only describe as rubbish. I am a chef and have cooked countless breakfasts for a long time and on hearing this was a great place for breakfast I wanted to try it. I don’t like to leave bad reviews and it’s a shame I have to but just disappointed with it. I didn’t except to get the meal free and would of been more then happy to pay for it so thank you for that

We ate in the restaurant and the menu promised much. The starters were good although it was a shame to drown out the delicate flavour of crab spring roll with a chilli infused side salad. We waited a long time for the main course and when it came the rump of venison was cool. It seemed that it had been waiting on the pass a long time for the other main course which was hot. I pointed out that the food was not hot and it came back on a hot plate with most of the celeriac, an integral part of the dish, removed. It was still not very warm so I just gave up hope. We have eaten at the Royal Oak for a number of years now and they usually seem to get something wrong although when they do get it right it's really good. A lovely menu let down by lack of attention to detail. Perhaps now is the time to move on.

Visited The Royal Oak in the past, many times, when visiting Ripon. Always enjoyed excellent food whether it was bar food or restaurant food. Albeit my husband and myself have not been in the last three years, but having viewed numerous reviews online, we decided as it was my Birthday we along with my Granddaughter and her partner would pre book a table for four for Sunday Lunch.Although it grieves me to say it, the entire experience was well below par.Bar service from Ben was good, very attentive, courteous and cheerful. The rest of the celebratory meal left a lot to be desired! We all had the Yorkshire Pudding starter, plates were hot, Yorkshire’s looked sad and sorry, not crispy as a freshly served Yorkshire ought to be, gravy and Yorkshire were served only just warm! ( not good). Two of my party had Fish & Chip main, acceptable, but again not piping hot, fish not of a good quality, chips appeared a bit limp, as if not freshly served from the fryer! The third member had the Slowly cooked rib of beef, the beef appeared slimy within the centre, not really edible! Yorkshire pudding again sad and limp! Vegetables were mediocre, again not hot enough! After my Granddaughter had eaten a couple of mouthfuls, she duly returned her meal back to the kitchen, My Granddaughter asked if she could perhaps have the Fish & Chip meal instead! Pleased to say the staff member most graciously obliged her. Finally myself ( the birthday girl!) I chose the Belly Pork with crispy crackling served with a stuffing filling and apple sauce. I did request on ordering, for the crackling to be served extra crispy, no problem came the reply! When I received my meal, the Belly pork meat was okay, ( but I did have to request a steak knife to cut it). The crackling was far from being even crispy! The so called stuffing, was a small piece of sausage meat rolled into a ball, with a Sage leaf placed on top!Tha apple sauce was just a small portion placed directly into the middle of the plate, underneath the two Roast potatoes! ( I even requested some Apple sauce) as I thought it had been forgotten ). Once again the meal, including the soft sad Yorkshire pudding was served on a hot plate, but the food was just warm!We even had to request the cutlery after the meal had been served, also salt & pepper etc! My Granddaughter and her partner picked up the tab for the meal and drinks, so I in all honesty I cannot say how much the entire meal came to. But it must have been hovering around the £100 mark! Totally unacceptable for what we were served, I have had better quality of food served in a Garden Centre Cafe, at less than half the price. Taking what should have been a lovely celebratory meal, ended up being a thorough disaster! I’m a retired cook myself, I fully understand the trials and tribulations as to what can and is encountered within the kitchen itself, however I have worked in the catering industry for many many years, but yesterday’s meal 6/09/2020 just was not acceptable, whatever the reason!I did not make a fuss or complain at the time, due to me not paying the bill, I did not want to spoil my birthday celebration! Hence I now feel I have to say Please please “ The Royal Oak’ Ripon. Have a rethink as to what or how you need to raise your standards back up to what I believe they once were! On behalf of 4 very disgruntled diners.

I had the Breaded Chicken which came with Caesar Salad and hand cut chips. My friend had the gammon chop with cheese topping, and hand cut chips. This is your typical pub grub, and it was very nice. I had a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, and my friend had lime and soda. The young waiter asked my friend if there was enough lime. He rarely gets asked this, so a special mention to the waiter for showing this consideration. For dessert, I had lemon posset with raspberry sorbet, and my friend had sticky toffee pudding with salted caramel ice cream. Both very good. The waiting staff were attentive and friendly, and we noticed that the pub were doing their utmost to maintain social distance and employing the ‘track and trace’ initiative, as on entering the pub I had to give my name and mobile number both of which were written down.

We had a lovely dinner at The Royal Oak last week - our waitress was great, friendly and efficient, and made some recommendations which were appreciated. I took advantage of Pie week with a really delicious beef cheek pie, pastry was first class! We all had great food and were tempted by the local ice cream and cheese options too. Special mention for the beer too, an excellent pint of Timothy Taylor Landlord and Landlord Dark. Definitely recommended for hearty gastro pub food!

Called in for lunch following examination of external menu. The pub/restaurant has a nice environment and our orders were taken quite quickly at the table. The wait for food was a little long but not excessive. The meals and portion size were very good, although my beef burgers were a little "basic", and I would probably not repeat this choice. The service was very friendly, and helpful throughout. Overall a good experience

Four of us called for lunch on a cold February day. We were not impressed at all by the surroundings as, at half past twelve, the pub was quite cold and a little dark. Our very basic round table in the corner was set for five, despite the fact that we had booked beforehand for four. As this was our first visit we were very apprehensive about the meal to come. The menu was not particularly varied but we made our choices and waited. When the food came we could not have been more surprised and delighted. The celeriac soup with coriander and a blue cheese crouton was superb, as were the perfectly cooked and flavoured scotch eggs. The sea bass, chosen by all of us, and served with new potatoes, buttered spinach and capers was again perfect in every way. The almond tart was declared the best my husband had ever tasted and the coffee was lovely. We will definitely be back.

Travelled down from Scotland to meet up with friends in Ripon. I know The Royal Oak has great atmosphere for just drinks which is what we were there for. I had a mulled wine, it was fantastic! Tasted like Christmas cake. Delicious. Service was good and the staff are friendly. The food menu is good and I have eaten here before and the chef is excellent. Highly recommend, especially at this time of year!

Having fancied the amazing looking Yorkshire breakfast for around a year I eventually had one after a decent swim. I'd earned it and it was fantastic..! Three Saturdays in a row passed and a hundred percent success each time. Top drawer. Properly good quality produce. How they do this for £5 is beyond me. Thank you.

Called in for a drink last night. Stood at the bar waiting to be served to frustratingly watch 3 different customers come from behind me and get served, whilst I was ignored. One guy walked and stood at the side of me after if been waiting for about 10 minutes, held out his money and was immediately served. At this point I walked out in disgust and went to the Hornblower around the corner & received much better service. Won't bother going again.

Lunch with a couple of chums, all of us regular customers. Beautifully served and kept Timothy Taylor's beers. Special lunch menu excellent. I had the special - Sea Trout - absolutely delicious - colleagues had Falafel special - clean plates all round, so we went to the "top shelf" to celebrate and had one too many, I'm afraid. You can tell we were very happy! - We'll be back soon of course.

Friendly staff, lovely warm and welcoming pub on a cold and wet October evening. We started with hummus and sourdough bread (gluten free bread was offered and accepted by one of us) to share and then all three of us chose the Sticky Ripon Beef. Again, a gluten free option was offered which was great. The beef was fabulous, meltingly tender with a lovely sauce. An onion tart, to die for and mustard mash and carrots. So glad I didn't have a full starter as it would have been such a shame to not finish what was a wonderful dinner.

We’ve eaten here a few times, but last night dined with my mum for the first time. The pub was very busy when we arrived but with a lovely, lively atmosphere. All the staff were welcoming and friendly so the evening got off to a great start. We shared a starter along with delicious toasted sourdough and a balsamic reduction on the side. Main courses were superb - sea trout from the specials menu got a resounding 10/10 from mum, and my chicken Kiev was a sophisticated version of a delicious classic. Could have eaten it twice over! Pudding was a final delight and rounded off an excellent evening. Treacle tart spiked with citrus and served with rhubarb ice cream. Tip top
