Mother Hubbard's Famous Fish & Chips in Leicester

The fish got me food poisoning. How can they sell that nasty fish . People must be high on something to go to this shop . I felt sick straight after . Not worth going back . Very disappointed. Hope the manger see this and fixes up

Me and two other were the only people in the shop but yet it still took them 40mins to make fish bites. They didn’t even realise until we reminded them that the order had been a while. They offered no apology and simply didn’t care. They are not professional and the food is genuinely disgusting. Save your money and your time. DO NOT EAT HERE!!!

Grey old fish. Soggy battered and not crispy and golden like a good fish and chips. Mushy peas from a can and is artificial coloured and flavoured literally fluorescent green and looks like play dough. Cold and soggy chips. Unacceptable

Not great. The batter on the fish was soggy, I said I wanted plenty of salt and Vinegar which to them meant 1 packet and I also asked for curry sauce which I was charged for but they didn't give it.

Ordered fish and chips on two occasions recently to take for family back in London, they absolutely loved it. Very fresh and tasty. The fish was nice and crispy and not Oily at all. Would highly recommend.

Chips were cold. The rest of the food was OK temperature wise but the chips were very cold not packaged properly to keep them hot. Other food was nice.

Truly, Captain Haddock’s are a ‘take-away’. That is, they take away from your order. Legally, there is a word that describes taking money and not providing a good/service in return. However, I hesitate to use that word because I genuinely don’t believe the poor service is the result of malice, rather, it is the result of incompetence. I made the mistake of ordering from here again (the final time). I ordered gravy as a sauce on the side. It didn’t arrive. In the past, I’ve ordered gravy and, without being instructed, they’ve put salt and vinegar on the fish and chips. Not realising this, I’ve poured on the gravy, which then ruined the entire meal. Today, anticipating a repeat performance, I stipulated: ‘no salt and vinegar on anything’, which I ordered (for clarity that I shouldn’t have to give) only for the gravy not to arrive! As for the quality of the food itself, this fish and chip shop simply would not survive in the more discerning North. Check and double check your orders and notes! Haddock: the name of the Captain of the Titanic of the Friday night takeaway.

We ordered fish and chips, battered sausages, a variation of pies, curry sauce and some mushy peas. The service was excellent - very friendly and efficient. The food was scrumptious- enjoyed every bite of our meal. Fish was cooked to perfection - nice and crispy batter and the fish was so nice and flakey. Chips were flavoursome and covered in plenty of salt and vinegar.

Young Asian girl on the front desk, it’s incredibly hard to understand her on the phone, had to repeat my order 3 times and she still got it wrong, constantly spoke over me that’s probably why it was wrong.

Disappointed with the fish. Last couple of visits the batter has always been uncooked on the inside. End up eating the fish without the batter. Don't think I will be going back.

Great service and customer friendly. Put an order in over the phone and was quick to serve up especially it being a big order. When we picked up the staff were so helpful and friendly and even gave us some extras. Would definitely go again.

Fish can be a bit hit and miss.

As someone who isn't a massive fan of typical chippy fish. Captain Haddock offers the best fish burger in town. Freshly prepared with a small portion of chips, a great Value for money and as usual the customer service is always great.

Tried the fish ‘n’ chips from here and they were amazing. If you want a snack then I would recommend the £1:50 chip cone with salt n vinegar yummm.

Used this place twice recently and was impressed on both occassions-portion sizes are great, service was quick and the food was hot and tasty. The oik used for frying was nice and fresh. I will use this place again.

Hi, brought a king size fish & chips yesterday for family,£17,95 approx, like other reviews fish was poor quality- black streaks running through, thin piece of fish, probably 30 % batter, chips were reheated and not fresh. Please think twice we all have a stomach upset after eating this meal. Will not be going back ever!

I ordered a small fish and chips for takeout and they didn’t even give me the chips!!! I only received fish in a box. How ridiculous.

absolutely lovely!! we never order fish and chips theses days due to the cost but we decided to with our £10 JE voucher and the 20% discount, I'm so glad we did! gorgeous!! the gravy was the best I've had and the pie was glorious!

They've gone completely downhill since the name got changed. we always come across stinky grey fish and thought I'd give it another go and reiterated it to them that this time I'd like to have a fresh fish. Once again here we have an almost black fish. Definitely won't be going again.

Food arrived 10 minutes late and was not very hot when arrived, also lost the delivery drivers signal as soon as he’d left to deliver so couldn’t keep an eye on if he was close, food was still fab though

Mother Hubbard's is the best fish and chips around . Been coming since it opened. And the food never disappoints is always excellent .And the staff are always helpful and very friendly .Well done .

Good food but staff disappointed me by not giving any sauces and not answering the phone.

a group of 8 older people rang through an order and picked it up. it was ready and well packed and everyone thought their fish was lovely. a few people had children's portions and were very happy with them. I had a vegetable pasty and chips meal (drink included) but found the pastry hard, however it is good value and as I organized the evening and everyone was very happy then so was I.

This place was amazing when it first launched, but it's now very hit and miss. Sometimes amazing, sometimes okay, sometimes not so good. The most annoying thing is they stopped giving salt and vinegar packets on deliveries - As you can see from the balsamic I found in my cupboard.

Thought I would have some chips to warm me up on a night shift, £1.50 for a reasonable amount, the lady that served me was very nice and welcoming and served me straight away, the chips Though wow completely tasteless, they were starchy and borderline cooked if it wasn't for the salt and vinegar would of thought I had lost my sense of taste. Thanks but I'll go up the road next time

The most terrible fish and chips I have ever had. Batter was soggy, fish was grey, the sausage was anemic, chips a mix of hot and cold- disgusting! Avoid at all costs, much places for better for quality.

The chips were not fresh at all. Disappointing because I spent £28.49 and will not order again!

Quality of fish has gone downhill since they changed from Mother Hubbards. Lots of dark grey parts in fish, doesnt taste fresh.

Food delivered was excellent except for the pie, which was not the one I ordered.

Portion size of scampi was small for the price. Also have to pay extra for sauce.

6 meals all of the chips had black/green pieces in so potatoes used were either cheaply purchased or gone over use by date. The fish was of chicken texture and of grey colour and this was not the skin! Batter was ok. Pie was flat and with cheap, grisly meat inside. Complete waste of £65. If lived more locally would have returned the lot. Why cash only in this day and age? Tax fiddle perhaps? Never again.

The service is terribly slow, we ordered a very small order but had to wait 25 minutes. We ordered 2 sausages, and were not told that they were chicken sausages. When advertising “sausages” you would think they are pork. You should’ve stated that they were chicken, because they are absolutely disgusting. You have to pay 25p for a tiny bit of ketchup. Never coming back here again.

We Ordered king size fish and chips online it came cold. Fish looked like the same as a standard large but a lot of chips that were hard as if they have been refried. I have definitely tasted better. So for that reason I'm out. Won't be ordering from there again.

One of the best fish and chips shops in Leicester

The original wait time was up to an hour. Once this hour passed & and the app was still stating 'preparing order', I called the restaurant directly. The manager confirmed that my order was ready, but no driver had arrived to collect it yet. I explained my concerns re: food being "sat waiting", again the manager explained it was not his responsibility but down to Just Eat. Attempted to cancel the order via app, but it sent me round in circles - I could not cancel. Finally, the food arrived, 2hrs after ordering - Everything was COLD - the chips hard, the fish was dry & batter soggy, the pizza solid & overcooked. The portions small (fish looked like mini fish, not normal portion as ordered) Upon calling the restaurant again to inform them of the condition of the food, I was told by the manager that it was due to it being cold outside & distance (I live 0.5 miles away, 5min journey)! After reminding him of our earlier conversation where he'd informed me the food was "ready," he then said it's solely down to Just Eats driver being late. Adding, their food is prepared freshly and if I collected or ate in, I would see this!! Confirming the food is not fresh when leaving for delivery - not acceptable. I have ordered many times from this restaurant & via Just Eat, I have never been so dissatisfied with the customer service & poor quality of food. The standard has severely dropped - I will never order from this restaurant again nor with Just Eat. Completely ruined our family Bonfire Night plans & certainly not worth the £18 - terrible service & food.

Chips were nice, fish didn't seem the freshest, batter was brilliantly crispy, but overwhelmingly oily. Pizza was nothing special, like something you might get at Megazone for a kids birthday party, but with a really chewy base. They served me a fresher fish a couple of days ago so timing seems to be important here. For the price, I won't make a habit of ordering from here, but not bad if you're on London Road and hankering for some fish and chips.

Nipped in after getting off the train today, while I waited for my bus. Got a cone of chips, which were freshly cooked and I didn't have to wait very long. They were delicious, good price and portion size in a nice box. The girl that served me was friendly and professional.

Customer Service is nothing compared to the previous owners. Ordered adult fish bites. Got served just fish bites on its own, i asked them wheres the chips. Was told you order chips separately, ok but had to wait for chips whilst my fish got cold. Previous menu had fish bites and chips included, if your going to the change the menu then atleast when taking order advised the chips have to be Ordered separately. Previously the owner/manager would be on site and the staff would constantly ask for feedback now they just to take your money and thats it. Btw i did dine in , thought it strange they wanted to serve fish on its own without chips.

I placed an order and was given the wrong food. Staff were not willing to take responsibility. Spoke to the owner who also was dismissive and unhelpful. Poor communication and he was not concerned at all. Whilst there they messed up a few more orders as well for other customers. Really poor service. Food was very oily and left a lot to be desired. Would definitely not recommend.

Just had my first visit to captain Haddock fish shop. The fish was brown half way through, And a yellow slime on the fish, It smelt strong. Thought it was expensive for fish-and-chips Over 11 pound

Fish burger was delicious, chips nice & hot. Delivery driver was lovely too.

Wow large fish is definitely large, no seasoning at all though was very tasteless. Chips were great, proper chippy chips, lots of them too. Garlic bread was disgusting. I'm glad the delivery driver messed up, the cheese sticking to the lid revealed the awful mess they call dough, it was gooey and chewy, yuck.
