Mother Hubbard's Famous Fish & Chips in Leicester

They've gone completely downhill since the name got changed. we always come across stinky grey fish and thought I'd give it another go and reiterated it to them that this time I'd like to have a fresh fish. Once again here we have an almost black fish. Definitely won't be going again.

Mother Hubbard's is the best fish and chips around . Been coming since it opened. And the food never disappoints is always excellent .And the staff are always helpful and very friendly .Well done .

Good food but staff disappointed me by not giving any sauces and not answering the phone.

a group of 8 older people rang through an order and picked it up. it was ready and well packed and everyone thought their fish was lovely. a few people had children's portions and were very happy with them. I had a vegetable pasty and chips meal (drink included) but found the pastry hard, however it is good value and as I organized the evening and everyone was very happy then so was I.

This place was amazing when it first launched, but it's now very hit and miss. Sometimes amazing, sometimes okay, sometimes not so good. The most annoying thing is they stopped giving salt and vinegar packets on deliveries - As you can see from the balsamic I found in my cupboard.

Thought I would have some chips to warm me up on a night shift, £1.50 for a reasonable amount, the lady that served me was very nice and welcoming and served me straight away, the chips Though wow completely tasteless, they were starchy and borderline cooked if it wasn't for the salt and vinegar would of thought I had lost my sense of taste. Thanks but I'll go up the road next time

The most terrible fish and chips I have ever had. Batter was soggy, fish was grey, the sausage was anemic, chips a mix of hot and cold- disgusting! Avoid at all costs, much places for better for quality.

Quality of fish has gone downhill since they changed from Mother Hubbards. Lots of dark grey parts in fish, doesnt taste fresh.

Portion size of scampi was small for the price. Also have to pay extra for sauce.

6 meals all of the chips had black/green pieces in so potatoes used were either cheaply purchased or gone over use by date. The fish was of chicken texture and of grey colour and this was not the skin! Batter was ok. Pie was flat and with cheap, grisly meat inside. Complete waste of £65. If lived more locally would have returned the lot. Why cash only in this day and age? Tax fiddle perhaps? Never again.

Yummy fresh food. Always satisfied. Portions are huge. Staff are so lovely! Aysha was amazing. Really went above and beyond. I felt like a special customer.

The service is terribly slow, we ordered a very small order but had to wait 25 minutes. We ordered 2 sausages, and were not told that they were chicken sausages. When advertising “sausages” you would think they are pork. You should’ve stated that they were chicken, because they are absolutely disgusting. You have to pay 25p for a tiny bit of ketchup. Never coming back here again.

We Ordered king size fish and chips online it came cold. Fish looked like the same as a standard large but a lot of chips that were hard as if they have been refried. I have definitely tasted better. So for that reason I'm out. Won't be ordering from there again.

Nipped in after getting off the train today, while I waited for my bus. Got a cone of chips, which were freshly cooked and I didn't have to wait very long. They were delicious, good price and portion size in a nice box. The girl that served me was friendly and professional.

I placed an order and was given the wrong food. Staff were not willing to take responsibility. Spoke to the owner who also was dismissive and unhelpful. Poor communication and he was not concerned at all. Whilst there they messed up a few more orders as well for other customers. Really poor service. Food was very oily and left a lot to be desired. Would definitely not recommend.

Customer Service is nothing compared to the previous owners. Ordered adult fish bites. Got served just fish bites on its own, i asked them wheres the chips. Was told you order chips separately, ok but had to wait for chips whilst my fish got cold. Previous menu had fish bites and chips included, if your going to the change the menu then atleast when taking order advised the chips have to be Ordered separately. Previously the owner/manager would be on site and the staff would constantly ask for feedback now they just to take your money and thats it. Btw i did dine in , thought it strange they wanted to serve fish on its own without chips.

Just had my first visit to captain Haddock fish shop. The fish was brown half way through, And a yellow slime on the fish, It smelt strong. Thought it was expensive for fish-and-chips Over 11 pound

Ordered Food Which Was An Absolute Shambles Along With The Hopeless Girl Behind The Counter Who Couldn't Even Get The Order Right Let Alone Confirming The Order & Still Somehow Managed To Get It Wrong & When Asked To Speak To Management Was Fobbed Off & Was Asked For The Food Back No Common Courtesy Of An Apology Until Management Came To The Rescue - Refried The Fish Claiming It To Be Fresh! That Says Alot -They Really Need To Up Their Game!

Saw this place when looking for fish and chips in Leicester and thought i had to try it out. They did not disappoint, lovely chips, delicious battered onion rings and fantastic battered chips. Never tried those before, well I guess I will be returning! Other items on the menu look good and I might try those, and the place had a great atmosphere. The staff were nice and friendly. Thoroughly recommended Captain Haddock's and will be returning.

Peri peri chicken was the best one for me. Rest if the food such as shrimp fish and pizza were really good👍

Four of us got fish and chips, prawns and chips, peri peri burger and peri chicken pizza. They were decent and portions sizes were good. But you will have to buy ketchup if you want it which we thought shouldn’t be the case. Its better if they could at least give one pack with each meal and charge if someone needs more.

This place was amazing very happy friendly staff was best fish n chips in leicester with the very first owners very disappointed there no longer there food was always on point and always great service my grandson gets disappointed when his fish lady isn't there to catch his fish lol Iv heard from friends since being taken over by new owners there aren't welcoming isnt the same and the food has gone down hill So going back to Grimsby fisheries which is well out of my way. 🙁 Good luck to old owners where ever you go if you open any where eles please let me know and me and my grandson will be there so the nice fish lady can catch his fish x

Delicious fish and chips and other items on the menu like burgers and pizza. Service is friendly and everything is cooked fresh to order. Much cheaper if you order at the shop than on Uber Eats etc.

Went in the afternoon lady behind the counter was very friendly and helpful. Nice clean place, we ordered the king meal which was enough for 4 people. Prices are very reasonable for the area. Will deffo go again highly recommended

Ordered the smash burger however what i got was just a homemade burger. onions in the burger were burnt and just ruined the whole flavour come with a garlic and herb sauce which would be better suited for a chicken burger chips were Perfect best part of the meal !

Ordered a pizza and have to say one of the best pizzas in Leicester definately reccomend it

Thought I’d try this place Lots of reviews and menu n pics looked nice Wasn’t disappointed. Tricky to find parking around there as it’s near the train station but after 5 ish mins I found a free spot not to far away. Guy behind the counter was really friendly. Manners don’t cost a thing Had the king size box and it was bigggg easily feed 2 adults I’d say 3 Tried the battered chips. They were very tasty. Got a small portion as wanted to try them. The fish and chips were freshly cooked. Very tasty. The fish was one of the best I’ve tasted. Batter was very crispy and the fish was very fresh and flavoursome. Had the mushy peas and curry sauce and both were nice and fresh too! Cost £18 and I’d say it’s great value for money Wanna try the battered mars bar next time I come. Guy said he’s working on it ! Great work guys next time I pop by will try the burgers!

The place looks really good, inside and out. Interesting pictures inside of Leicester from yesteryear. That's where the tradition stops. Classic example of people trying to reinvent something that doesn't need to be. Everyone knows that there's regular and large when it comes to chip portions. I asked for a bag of chips and felt like I'd said something offensive. In general I didn't feel welcome at all. Portions are served in a box, of which there is 5 different types 😂 I opted for the large, which is smaller than a regular in every other chip shop. Taste wise they were ok but nothing special. All about money and no skill. Classic greedy business owner/s. Chip shops on the coast serve small portions in boxes at higher prices because their business is seasonal.

I ate here for the first time today. Young lady that served me looked like she was completely bored and barely even spoke to me. I ordered a regular chips and large mushy peas. Food was great but portion size was too low. I think i will go somewhere else next time.

Popped in after a 10CC concert so we were getting close to closing time. The lovely lady behind the counter immediately apologised that it was take away only & being cooked to order which was absolutely no problem at all. Ordered fish & chips twice & opted for the regular fish size. Staff were lovely whilst we waited & put up with my hubby's vague attempts at humour regarding their wall prints of Leicester through the ages. As we had parked on the street opposite, we drove out of town for 10 mins to find somewhere to park up so expected everything to have cooled down but it was still piping hot. Good job we opted for the regular fish as it was massive & there were loads of chips. Everything was really tasty & excellent quality. Would definitely go here again & would certainly recommend them 🐟🍟🥇

Only ordered chips. Waited over 20 minutes whilst they served online and phone orders then forgot about us twice then started serving people that came in after us! Basically a joke, unorganised farce.

First time visiting, clean n tidy staff were nice... Ordered fish and chips x2, 2 cheese burgers and a battared sausage. Taking away so got it packed seperately to avoid moisture ruining it ..however upon opening it and tasting the fish I can say confidently the fish was not fresh at all! Rubbery and dry was horrible! My nephew spat it out and his not exactly a fussy eater. Batter had a decent crisp but was infused with oil ... But the fish was very bad ... For a shop that's supposed to do fresh fish being a fish and chip shop. Chips were decent and edible tho. The burger tasted overly processed and had a wierd taste ..covered in their house sauce which wasn't pleasant. The sausage wasn't nice either... Safe to say won't visit this place again or recommend it. Disappointing !

Went on a recommendation as its HMC halal. Ordered burgers dynamite and Mexican. They were super delicious and full of flavour. Steak pie was yum as well with gravy. For kids ordered the hot dogs and they loved it. As was there the first time they gave gravy and mushy peas on the house and also gave extra portion of chips for my sons battered sausage. We went on a Saturday evening. The place was super busy with take away orders, We dined in. As its was a hot afternoon the place was boiling as no aircon. I loved the food and the manger was super friendly and serving with a smile. Loved it and will be returning.

Was in Leicester for work, ate here twice. Fish and chips is sooo good! Among the best ones I had in my life. But the best part is the service. Staff is just so welcoming and warm. They offered me complimentary drink because I had to wait longer for my order to be prepared. Will eat there again next time I'm in Leicester :)

Thoroughly decent chips and curry sauce and peas. Also a cracking veg pasty - slightly spicy, thin filo-esque pastry, decent filling that didn't taste overly processed, but still perfectly accompanying traditional chippy food. Friendly, helpful staff. Some more sturdy cutlery would be an improvement but, otherwise, a cracking all round performance.

What's gone wrong?!!! Gutted. I rated this as 5 stars before but the last two times we bought it, the food was too damn greasy, even by Fish & Chips standard. You shouldn't have to wipe your lips of grease every time you have a bit of fish. The onion rings are just awful. Huge but so greasy. Please sort it out as you used to be the best in Leicester. Redeeming features: Clean shop and EXCELLENT staff with impeccable manners, face to face and on the phone.

Spotlessly clean shop , friendly service , fish cooked to order, I had large fish and chips as I was really hungry otherwise a standard portion would have been enough. The chips were good and the fish and batter were very good. They have a wide range of food available and I'm tempted to try one of their burgers next time I'm in the area. Definitely recommend good quality and decent price.

We ordered through just eat among other things we ordered the grilled fish and salad..something that should be pretty plain and simple you would think..but what arrived was a grilled piece of fish heavily dosed in black pepper and chilli flakes along with a box of chopped lettuce with half a cherry tomato, a slice of cucumber and onion and again chilli, this time slices of jalapenos....this may seem fine to most people.but not to someone with a chilli allergy and the menu not stating that either of these items would contain such, or give option to add or remove.Being partially sighted it was not possible to see the chillies until already commenced eating and allergic reactions ensued requiring treatment. It's a shame the information is not provided on the menu as this has certainly deterred us from ordering again.

I came here when it first opened as mother Hubbard, it looked like staff training was going on but I made an order of fish and chips. All I can say is it was was amazing the chips were crazy good and fish was great. I went as far as making family orders just under a 100 pounds but it was evident the standard had drastically dropped it didn't taste great anymore. Thought it must have been a one off so made another order sometime later and no joy. Just another below average chip shop now :((

Came here earlier this month as my mother wanted to try it out. I got a hot dog and fries and she got fish and chips. Both foods were amazing. But quite expensive compared to the ones I'm used to, but that's because I live in the countryside and this shop is in the city centre.

It's OK, too much shouting by order taker but foid is good, service is also 👍

Been waiting years to go here after seeing people rave about it. Today I took my daughter. I went for normal size fish and chips. It had been cooked fresh. Batter was lovely but one end the batter was thick with the fluffy white bit in side, the other end of fish was crispy and so way over cooked I ended up eating the fish like I was tearing meat off a rib. The fish had turned to almost plastic. Never would I ever go back. It's a fish and chip shop. If they can get that right there is no hope. Rest of food was fine .

No complaints got the captains tower burger with chips and drink was around £7.00 large portion sizes too. Also they do take card payments .

Walked in here.. Welcome greetings were nice and team member were happy to offer service. I ordered King Size take out delivery. It was prepared within time and was well served for delivery. Place was clean and up to the mark. Overall just a little bit for the price of the food, could have got a students discount here but wasn't prompted during service. Visited this place twice it was a overall a good experience. Uploading few venue pics followed by the menu prices. When I'll have a fish and chips cravings.. I'll definitely visit here. Thanks.

Went in for a late lunch with my family, (4 children and my husband). We had a brilliant service from the moment we walked in. The staff were so friendly and the food was amazing!! Esme, served us and her customer service was impeccable. She made an effort to come over and ask us if we needed anything and her genuine charm and warm personality made us feel very comfortable. Esme was kind and courteous to everyone that walked through the door. It was actually lovely to see this level of genuine customer service. She is a true asset to the company. I've been eating fish and chips for 30 years, this has to be one the worst meals I've had. Quite sad as when I went 3 months ago the fish was good. Yesterday the fish was grey/black, definitely not fresh and probably the worst quality potatoes I've had for a long time. The battery was extemely thick but minimal fish inside - and hollow in many places - definitely with intent to give as little fish as possible.

The packaging was very clean and very nice and was well secured. The portion sizes were very big and well worth the amount paid The The same vinegar came separately which was a nice touch as it didn’t get the food all moist and greasy by the time it came. The fish was cooked beautifully I would definitely recommend this to students as the student discount also the curry sauce is amazing. Would definitely recommend getting a drink though as it gets very starchy. The two meals we got were a meal deal for one including chips Fish and a sauce/side. only criticism is that the tartar sauce that wasn’t fresh and it was just a Heinz version I wish that they made a house special Tartare sauce. Very full and very happy might just have to be my new chippy :)

Cod and chips KINGSIZE VERY FRESH and great taste. Curry and peas also good but curry cold have been a little more curry flavour.

It's not easy to get it right with traditional fish and chips and these guys know how to do it. We've travelled several times from London to Leicester just for there haddock and chips which is spot on. The quality has remained the same after the rebranding. We now have a mother hubbards in London, however the quality is no where near that of captain haddocks. Keep it up guys
