Mooch in Calderdale

Visited with family and 3 year old grandson. £13 for a ciabatta and a bit of salad!! Asked if my grandson could have a cheese toastie to be told “ we have no bread?” Really?! He was really hungry and the service was very slow. I asked if he could have a bowl of crisps which were on the menu for £3.50 asap . I was told “ we are very busy”. I was simply asking for a few crisps to be put in a bowl?!? The food arrived about 30 mins later and they brought the crisps last …..! Very expensive , awful customer service and condescending staff. Avoid!!

The lady who greeted me was polite as was the girl who took my order. I ordered an 8oz burger but she came back apologising that there was only enough meat for a 4oz. Fair enough. But when I got to the bar the young woman was very offhand. No "Was everything OK?" First she tried to charge me for an 8 oz then altered it when I said I had only had a 4 oz. When I remarked that the Peroni I had ordered was 0.0 and not an alcoholic one she tried to ignore me by turning her back to me.. I repeated it. 'I heard you the first time. " she said. " I don't write the menu' I used to like this place. I won't be back.

Very pathetic woman who was very charming and sucked up to myself and some other customers, but I was baffled when observing her be belligerently rude to any young or attractive female who walked through the door. Didn't know whether to feel sorry for someone with such little discipline over their emotions but decided to write this review as it was so cringey it ruined my experience. I don't like witnessing rudeness, especially to fellow local paying customers, especially as she was perfectly capable of being charming towards myself. The food was nice, the other staff are lovely and they play cool music so this member is really letting the team down. If you go there, don't let the sour puss with the fake Scottish accent get you down! It's her problem not yours. And if they're rude to you, just refuse to pay.

Treated like dirt by rude waitress with short grey hair. Please don't waste your money and ruin your day. Just a little human nicety would have been appreciated - I could see she was capable as she was being polite and even laughing with others. Just so mean - get another job if you're so unhappy you have to bully others in order to feel better! I left feeling completely ripped off even though the food was nice.

Great coffee and cake!!! Service is slow, but if you're not in a hurry it's no problem 😊

Always a must when we visit Hebden, great food and friendly faces...

It looks special from the outside, but don’t expect to be treated respectfully! The food was ok, though it took a while. The service from one young lady was rude and offhand. Won’t return, as there are much better places that don’t leave you feeling like the waitress thinks they’re doing you a favour just by talking to you!! 🙄😆 sadly she may have been the only one as another was fine and polite!

Very slow service having been told they would take the order at our table... sat and sat until compelled to ask if we'd been forgotten? Sat in conservatory at back - nice space but uncomfortable chairs and very damp cushions. Ridiculously expensive! Pot of tea for two almost £8! Great that they offered GF alternative for my Ciabatta but... sadly this was just supermarket white sliced GF bread. Prices indicated it would be Artisan bakery. Just not my vibe tbh and won't go again with lunch for two totalling almost £40!

Went in mooch today, server greeted me and I asked to save a table as I was meeting a few friends for lunch, and I ordered a flat white. Nipped to use the loo, and the servers had given my table away, and moved me to a wobbly uncomfortable table that was too small. Coffee split everywhere, had to quickly drink it and leave. Won’t be returning

Great food but can be quite busy

I called in this morning for a cup of tea and what a lovely quaint tea room it is just what you expect from a tea room, very clean the decor lovely but the beautiful aroma when you walk in , wish I could have bottled it up and brought it home.

Wow wow and wow, what a place!, Food exceptional, service memorable and quality atmosphere that just felt easy. I will definitely be back.

Poor customer service. Asked for a menu - the person behind the till spoke to me as if I killed her dog. Poor poor customer service.

Went to our favourite place and had our usual lamb tagine😋best ever. Lovely staff and very friendly especially the Scottish lady😊.

Absolutely outstanding!!! Fabulous food, amazing coffee. Brilliant service , I had the vegetarian breakfast and my husband had the full English and both were the best breakfast we have eaten in a cafe/ restaurant ever !!! The food is of a very high standard 5 stars is not enough. How lucky are Hebdon Bridge to have this little gem.

Best coffee in the Valley, and great service.

Had a lovely pot of tea and a slice of gluten free cake here. The staff were friendly and the portions were generous. Was a lovely cosy spot to have an afternoon treat.

WHY do Mooch think it's in any way acceptable to charge £15 for a 1cm thick slice of goats cheese with a bit of salad. This time they didn't even put the caramelised onions on so I had to ask for them. They also threw a load of rocket on top of the cheese, probably hoping that I wouldn't see how tiny the cheese was. We have complained about this multiple times but yet still tiny portions for us and huge profits for Mooch. Staff turnover is massive too. Please be a bit more generous. I had to have snacks on the way home.

Mooch elevates the simple to outstanding every time. Smoked Salmon and lovely fluffy scrambled eggs with a beautifully presented pot of tea. Sheer bliss.

Can’t believe some of the staff are still working here after these reviews! The woman who served us honestly looked at us with such disdain, like how dare we even ask for a coffee?! So rude, we ended up leaving before ordering, would rather spend my money elsewhere….there’s loads of lovely places in Hebden!

I can’t believe that the staff member who is clearly being rude to people on a regular basis still has a job here! Myself & two friends came in for a coffee today & I was spoken to & looked at with such disgust by the waitress with long, brown hair that we decided to leave before even making an order. She made us feel truly unwelcome!

This is a nice cafe and we have been a few times as we live in Hebden and it stays open until eight. However, like other reviews I must say some of the staff are very unfriendly and having waited for about fifteen mins we asked if we could place our order. We were greeted with a very sullen reply. I noticed then that the staff were laughing and looking at our table. The Scottish staff member is terrific and never anything but helpful.

Unfriendly which is a shame. Nice venue with decent coffee, unfortunately the staff made no effort to be pleasant. When our orders arrived there was no cutlery provided and the toast was basically warm bread. We left feeling our custom wasn’t valued, which doesn’t bode well for the business.

Ordered two light lunches and coffees, food arrived approx 40 mins after coffees no apology for the extremely long wait. Went to pay after and a surely response at the counter, no eye contact, smile, offer of receipt (so I didn't even know if I was paying the correct amount) or even thank you! Never never again.

Ok, so it was busy, I get that but a warning that we'd have to wait nearly 40 mins for a sandwich and soup would have been nice. When the food did eventually arrive a simple.....'sorry for your wait' .....would have gone far, but no, nothing. Upon departure we went to the counter to pay, not much verbal communication from the counter person....a smile or 'how was your meal?'....just told us the total (£29....no offer or receipt or bill so no idea if the amount was correct) but worst of all no 'thank you'.....left feeling like I'd experienced really awful service. Very disappointing

Not sure about crisps instead of chips but lovely food And cafe

Came in for brunch at 11:35 after seeing the brunch menus on the tables outside, was asked by a server if we want brunch menus, I said “brunch? Yes please” then she sat us down with lunch menus and walked off. I got her attention and asked for brunch menus like she offered and she told us they’ve stopped serving brunch. We were a bit annoyed but ordered sandwiches off the lunch menu anyway, which were decent and when my friend asked what time they stop serving brunch as we paid another sever said “oh usually around 12”. Some consistency would be good!

Too expensive compared to other places, £2.75 for a very very small cup of coffee. 3 mouthfuls and it was gone. See photo of the thimble cups they serve in. Not good in the current cost climate. Sorry.

The food I’ve had in here before has been excellent and the service at times good also . Unfortunately however , on this occasion a particular server who could have possibly been the manager ( I think an Irish woman with short blonde hair) was particularly difficult and spoilt the experience for all 4 of us . I’ve Allways known it to be a cafe where you go in sit down then order at the bar but when we went to go find a seat in the back we were ushered back to the front of the cafe again by the woman mentioned after she ignored our initial request for a table . After this she took us to the back where we had just been and I asked if we could sit in any free seat which she replied “ No you have to sit in this one “ quite rudely . When ordering I was incredibly surprised when she began to tell us that if we wanted a drink here it was necessary that we stay for a while because it was too complicated for her to organise when people leave after 20 minutes. I thought that this particularly was an appalling thing to say to a customer who is choosing to enjoy a drink in their cafe . She also began to tell us how busy it had been today and that it was ‘ just one of those days’ where things were hectic , I appreciate that it can be stressful as a server when things are busy but when paying for a service a customer shouldn’t be made to feel guilty that this is the case and certainly shouldn’t be spoken to the way we were . I’m writing this in the hopes that someone who works there will read this and that this woman’s attitude towards customers can be changed because it has put me off wanting to come into this cafe that I have really enjoyed previously and I can’t imagine that others customers in the future would be as sympathetic to her behaviour as us .

Cosy welcoming venue, brilliant coffee and lunch with brilliant staff. Nipped in today for the first time with my partner and we will definitely be back! Coffee was brilliant, great veggie and vegan options and the staff were just lovely. Dog friendly and overall great value for money. Thank you 😊

Great place to have a drink and relax

Went in for a coffee with my gf and had to wait half an hour for our below par coffee, the place looked cool from the outside and also was inside. The elderly couple next to us asked who I assume was the owner how long their coffee would be as it had been 20 minutes, and she replied by pointing out the other tables who had waited longer. Concerned they said it seemed pretty busy and she replied 'it's cause we're the best' and 'you should have seen it last week' and smugly walked off. We didn't order food thankfully as we didn't have all day although it did look good. Since it took so long I was expecting good presentation at least but no art in the foam, no cool cups, no nothing, and no apology for the wait or thanks for your patience, just a below average coffee that cost over £3, in a mug that i wouldn't even give to a builder (photo attached). And to top it off the server at the till didn't make eye contact and stood with her back to us while we paid. Maybe just a one off bad experience and the place was cool but the staff were arrogant and rude on this occasion

The Scottish lady at the front of house was so lovely, I had just come in from the pouring rain and she made me some tea (it was very nice) and the atmosphere was really nice. The staff make the whole experience. Really recommend.

Absolutely excellent food (again). Warm and welcoming on an icy December day. I had a lovely ciabatta sandwich, halloumi and peppers. My wife had a falafel salad which she said was wonderful.

Lovely coffee shop. Absolutely delicious homemade cakes and hot beverages. Scottish waitress was a bit brusque and not particularly welcoming. The other staff were friendly. Otherwise a really lovely place.

Ordered a latte, waited 10 minutes, enquired at the coffee bar about it to be told 'i'm doing it' with attitude which she clearly wasn't. Coffee was average and over priced for what it was. Food seems ok but that also looks over priced. Seems like because theyve been there for a long time they don't have to try. Strange table setup. Prefer to go to another cafe.

Lovely food, cosy atmosphere and very friendly staff

Very busy Saturday afternoon visit, but the staff are always super friendly and welcoming. Michelle met us with a smile and found us a table, and all of the staff were efficient, friendly, and professional. We had some delicious food including freshly made tomato soup, houmous, sandwiches and teas, all of which were very tasty. This is a gem of a place. It beats the reception we have received in other cafes' hands down. It is consistently excellent with a warm and welcoming ambience. For me, though, it's the friendly staff that makes this the best bit of Hebden. Thank you. 😊

Visited today for breakfast. We were shown to a table and order was taken quickly. We waited 20 mins for coffee. When I asked if we could have our coffee, I was told quite abruptly that we were in a queue ( got the impression that I should not have asked ) Food arrived 35 mins after ordering. Far too long a wait and no apology for wait offered.Service and staff attitude to customers is not the best .Would not return.

We liked the look of this place and popped in to ask to see the menu. A very warm unfussy welcome looked promising and we were seated in the cosy conservatory. Two warm salads and chai latte later we left very happy. My only comment to fellow readers is that this place deserves to be higher up the rankings for quality food in Hebden Bridge We look forward to our next visit

Visited Mooch with my 2 sons and won't be returning. We ordered 3 different meals and the difference in portion sizes and value for money was vast. Some meals are large portions, some very small. We also witnessed staff apologising to a family sat near us in the conservatory for messing their order up and serving them gluten. Then we saw 2 waitresses whispering and giggling about the complaint. I'd be interested to see if the cafe has an allergen book, probably not. This is purely a profit based cafe with a lack of customer service. They simply just don't care. Their reputation is slipping, competition is growing. We will be going elsewhere in future.

Staff are really nice and friendly and the atmosphere and decor are lovely. Would be nice if they had some cheaper items on the menu.

Sadly left feeling dissatisfied due to the agonising wait for food. We ordered two sandwiches off the breakfast menu, they took over 40 minutes to arrive, we were not advised of the long wait time when we sat down or given an update during the wait. When the food arrived the server didn't apologise and instead laughed and said "finally". Just tell people before they order/sit down if there is a long wait, it would save many of the reviews below who have also mentioned this issue. The sandwich was ok, hash brown undercooked a little and very expensive for what we got. Interior was nice, selection of drinks were good, but if you want a quick bite to eat definitely best to avoid.

Absolutely love this gem. The staff are so friendly and welcoming, love the coffee, a great selection of tasty cakes and fabulous food. Perfect place for a catch up with friends. Lovely cosy atmosphere. Definitely recommend.

Terrible service. Left me feeling very unwelcomed and not wanting to visit again. Food was good. Shame one of the staff members let the place down. After reading other reviews I'm suprised she hasn't been dismissed. Would not recommend.

Terrible service. I was talking to a staff member when I was rudely interrupted by another staff member who basically barked at me to go sit up in the conservatory. I wasn’t shown to the table and when I asked for a coffee she asked me if that’s all I wanted – without offering me a menu. I did not feel welcomed at all. Another customer walked in and they were greeted and shown to their table, they where told where the toilets where and given menus. I expressed how I felt to one of the staff who explained that the women that told me where to sit was quite stressed and that was probably why she was rude to me. The food however was delicious, its such a shame the service was terrible – it really let me down. Will be avoiding this place in the future. Toxic environment.

Pleasant service in a very cosy environment, the room was very warm but wait was too long for food approximately 40 minutes. The food was good but would only go again if the were a lot fewer customers.

It is a shame the service really lets this place down. Went in for breakfast today and 3 women were chatting amongst themselves around the counter. I assumed one was a customer so waited behind them, none of them acknowledged us standing there. After a while I caught one of their eyes and asked if it would be ok to grab a table. She says ‘oh will you be wanting menus then’? in a bit of huff, as if I’d overstepped the mark asking for a table, then the woman I thought was a customer said yes we’re table service here so we’ll come to you to serve you. Again a bit like I was being told off. I said ok thanks, and as we’re walking to the table, I hear behind me ‘yeah I thought that’ as if looks had been exchanged behind my back. I guess I really offended them by asking for a table in a cafe. Sometime later another member of staff started working who seemed really friendly and we paid with her. I guess it depends who you get. Shame because the food was pretty good and it’s a nice looking cafe.

What a great place for a spot of lunch

Stopped off at this cafe yesterday in Hebden Bridge for coffee. Went to the counter to order as the staff we more interested in each others plans for the week than being attentive to their customers. The lady behind the counter scoffed when I said I’d just like to order 2 coffees and thought ordering at the counter would be easier, clearly ordering at the counter is against their processes and procedures and 2 coffees ordered at the counter (when the cafe was empty) would throw everything into disarray, including the conversation about coworkers week plans. Coffees were lovely actually, but the customer service left a bitter taste, plenty of other cafes I’d rather support based off this and wouldn’t recommend.

Amazing Flapjack! Lovely little cast - only downside was cool/borderline unfriendly service. Don’t let it put you off the flapjack tho!

Love this little gem. Such a good place to chill with coffee and enjoy their healthy and yummy food. Best bit......the staff. Love them to bits. Michelle makes me smile every trip come rain or shine.

Popped into Mooch for a quick cuppa but was delighted to find a lovely little cafe with friendly, efficient staff that served delicious food and outstanding cakes. My new favourite ever cake is Ginger and honey with a plum jam filling which was incredible.

Awesome cafe, gorgeous food, hot chocolate to die for and really friendly customer service. Very pleased I found this place when looking for somewhere to meet with friends! Will definitely be back.

Always have a nice visit here. Opens longer hours than many Hebden Bridge cafes which is helpful, many places come teatime close!

Cosy cafe, great atmosphere, delicious cakes, especially the apple strudel. Just a shame that the hot dessert was served before we got our drinks and other piece of cake.

Really nice space to chill, have food, read etc. Will be returning.

Second time I have been and it was again busy with people waiting and some turned away. Staff are hard working in their challenge to keep everyone happy. Maybe best to book rather than take a chance or get there early it's worth it.

I would give this 5 stars but attitude of one female staff member is pure arrogance!! The owner she is lovely when she's on but the girl whoever she is has no manners it purely let's this place down. Not sure if she's stuck up as the expression goes. But just the way she is puts u off this place. Customer service is a must. In any customer area especially hospitality I think she needs to go back to glamour school !!

As usual this little place is always a great place for lunch or a drink. The staff are excellent and always friendly and helpful. Sorry but today the last slice of Victoria sponge was quite dry and the cream was slightly gritty. I think the wrong type of sugar was used to make the buttercream. We will always be back at Mooch when in Hebden Bridge.

The best coffee my husband and I have ever had! And I'm a big coffee drinker. The food is lovely too. Definitely our favourite cafe. So relaxing and very lovely staff. Recommended Mooch to everyone.

Very nice, & they even allow dogs too ! Excellent coffee, food was very nicely presented. My only gripe is that it was quite expensive for what we had, but as I said it was very nice, so I guess it's the old saying, you get what you pay for !

Favourite place to eat in Hebden Bridge!!!

We attended for lunch with friends and took our 2 year old as well as a newborn. I was very tempted by the calf selection but the others ordered larger meals so I ordered the falafel. Very tasty with a lot of fresh salad. The children's hummus and vegetables was perfect. We were seated in one of the rear rooms in the covered courtyard which had a cosy and relatively private atmosphere.

We were really looking forward to visiting Mooch last night. It ticked all our boxes interesting menu, reasonable prices and dog friendly. We had perused the menu on their website and decided what we would like to eat. I was looking forward to quesadillas which were listed as £7.50 and my OH was going to have the lamb tagline which was listed as £8.50. We were going to have a bottle of white Rioja which was listed at £14. We were seated straight away and given menus. We were shocked to find the quesadillas were £14, the lamb tagline was £17 and the wine was £21!!! We left straight away and not a word was said to us. This is blatantly misleading and dishonest.

Fabulous breakfasts at this lovely little cafe. Service was absolutely spot on, food is cooked from scratch so naturally takes a little while but 100% worth the wait. We also called in for tea and cake one afternoon, but were diverted by the beers on offer.... Thoroughly recommend Mooch for anyone staying in Hebden Bridge.

Can't recommend this place highly enough, fantastic friendly service, great breakfasts and coffee.

We came to test the reports that it was amongst the top 20 places in the UK for breakfast and brunch. It didn't disappoint!

Lovely vegan and vegetarian brunch options

We only had drinks but the best bits were the comfy seats next to the window and the slice of lemon that the waitress offered to add to my water bottle when she kindly refilled it on this scorcher of a day today in HB. Previous visits have been just as enjoyable. Great food, excellent service and lovely atmosphere.
